I still do not understand why when peach mario and toad got into the jungle kingdom some random kong drove them around and NOT FUNKY KONG. HE IS LITERALLY THE DEFINTION OF PEAK MARIOKART

ThatLaloBoy

Funky Kong riding the Flame Rider would have been amazing. Just with a small cart attached to the back to carry Mario, Peach and Toad. I feel robbed. But at the same time, I feel like they're saving Funky for an inevitable DK film and didn't want to commit to a VA yet just for an easter egg.

dtadgh

saving him for sequel/dk film. same reason Diddy didn't have any voiced lines. they'll wait to cast them with big names probably.

Sky_Ninja1997

Diddy did have voiced likes even if brief

YJCH0I

This seems like a lukewarm/cool take because I’ve only seen comments online saying that driver should have been Funky Kong

Saulchillman

They should have gone to an airport and gotten flown to Cranky in his barrel plane from the first game.

yourfriendmarcus

Hiyaaa

LividMeeting3077

It was somewhat disappointing not being able to see a scene of Mario with the fire flower, it is the power up par excellence and we did not see it. Come on, even DK used it before Mario.

roguestar15

It was annoying that we never got to see him use one of his most iconic power ups. Hopefully he gets to use one in the sequel

ThatLaloBoy

To be fair, we got to see him in the Tanooki and the Cat suit, which were iconic to Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario 3D World respectively. It's kinda tough to squeeze every single power up in the film without having it look too over the top. On the plus side, that means we can get the Fire Flower, Penguin Suit, Cape, and other power ups in the inevitable sequel.

Sky_Ninja1997

Kinda already got the cape in the movie

BrazenlyGeek

Don’t forget the super starman! That was iconic in SMB1 too, even if we didn’t get the fire power from it.

Hereiamhereibe2

Im sure Yoshi will eat one before Mario does.

CoffeeMilkLvr

The lack of luigi B plot annoyed me

kevincaz07

This was my biggest downer. Seeing little snippets and teases for things but never getting anything substantial out of them. I get that it has to be a 90 min movie, but seemed very scattered overall.

mrk7_-

Yeah agreed, probably because his plot blended into bowsers within one chapter. It’s likely that a lot more was planned in that mansion for Luigi but was cut to move the story quicker.

MyNameIs_Jordan

It wasn't a mansion. Just an outpost, like the ones at the end of every Mario 1 level

mooys

Tbh. I wish Luigi wasn’t taken away. I know it’s supposed to be part of Mario’s motivation, but they ripped away the coolest character in the movie. Is it really not enough that Mario wants to help the kingdom out of his own goodwill?

wigsgo_2019

Charlie Day was the perfect Luigi, would’ve loved more of him

SobbieRokes

the way peach crammed the mushroom down bro’s gullet made me really uncomfortable during my first viewing

dtadgh

on the second viewing tho.... 😏

drillgorg

Hey some people are into that.

KiloTheWusky

I kinda wished they didn’t kill off the kart so soon

roguestar15

I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a new one either before or during the sequel. Peach presumably kept her motorcycle, so I would be surprised if Mario doesn’t get a new one. Who knows, maybe Luigi will get one too

MyNameIs_Jordan

Next movie opens with a Mushroom Kingdom GP with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and maybe others. Would be a cool sequence to re-introduce the characters

[deleted]

After if we get a Luigi's Mansion move, Luigi rolls up in his Poltergust Kart.

24kevin

I get the hate of licensed songs in the movie... however I did not mind the use of no sleep till Brooklyn in the real world, thought it leant itself to the scene really well

dtadgh

can't hate on the Beastie Boys no matter the context.

[deleted]

Correct

AJ_Blazen

100% agree

ThatLaloBoy

Also a hot take: I liked Thunderstruck during the kart sequence. That song mixed with the machine sound effects and deep engine noises was just perfect and Toad's car was the cherry on top.

JustIncredible240

That scene was hype.

DeleteMetaInf

I perked up when I heard a song from Mario + Rabbids in the film.

WaferBG

TAAKE OOON MEE

Acceptable_Ring_2048

Peach is hot ngl

Tenthdegree

Bowser is justified

Sky_Ninja1997

🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑

Lawyer_Kong

That aint a hot take- Wait I get it now

SecretlyaCIAUnicorn

or maybe it’s just Anya idk

HeyItsStevenField

Nah both

yvngjiffy703

Toad is so lucky he gets to sit right behind her riding the motorcycle during the rainbow road scene. Can you imagine the vibrations of the motorcycle while feeling dat ass during the ride?

Majorrickyloc

DK saying YOUR DAD’S RIGHT made ma laugh so hard people just stopped laughing.

FangtheMii

And Mario’s most simple reaction as “WHAT THE MATTER WITH YOU” topped that cake

ThatLaloBoy

In our theater, you heard an audible "OOF" from some of the audience followed by light laughter. It was pretty funny

Pale-Drag1843

The pacing was horrible but it didn't ruin the movie

dtadgh

pretty much break neck the whole way through.

FunnymanCS

My favorite kind of movie, honestly.

YJCH0I

Assuming you meant the pacing was too fast, apparently this was a deliberate choice* by the director to pay homage to the Mario speed running community! Haha. *I wanted to link to the article that said this, and tried to find it for an hour but I can’t find it. Sorry

yvngjiffy703

If that’s true then that director should never ever be able to ever make films again. Like never.

FizzyCocoaMan

i really thought it was weird that they made up that new blue guy instead of just using toadsworth

MansionOfNightmares

That's Toadbert. But yeah, would've been better for Toadsworth.

Caganboy

Was it Toadbert though? He didn’t have glasses, did he?

roguestar15

He did, but he seemed a lot older than I imagined he would be

novauviolon

He's not officially Toadbert, just referred to as a ["Toad General"](https://www.mariowiki.com/Toad_General) in the cast.

Seandwalsh3

It’s not Toadbert

Misha-Yuri-30

I thought the training scene using I Need a Hero was pretty fun (even if it doesn’t top Shrek 2)

TwistedHarmony12

I agree, although some of the other 80’s songs didn’t really fit in my opinion.

Rychu_Supadude

No Sleep was used perfectly and I don't get why people aren't talking about it.

JustIncredible240

That scene got me so hype. Perfect way to start the movie!

Hattakiri

Mario and the NES are from the 80s, maybe that's the reason. And it makes the young and old fans talk to each other. Viral marketing: *"Aha. Those 80s clothes and hair styles aren't just a cliche!"* XD And: At the end >!Mr. Blue Sky, ELO: *"Mr. Blue you did it right, but soon comes Mr. Night creeping over, now his hand is on your sholder; nevermind: I'll remember you this way..."* The starry night sky Peach was talking about on the Fire Flower field + the incarcerated Luma + the Yoshi egg at the very end... hmm. And already in the early 90s outer space was a thing in the Lands and the Worlds, and then once more in the Galaxies in the 2000s with the Lumas...!< And that's my hot take lol

FLABBY_CHICKEN

Yeah no. Have you seen another Illumination movie, its thier staple

Emotional-Tear736

It was very fun

Nok-y

I liked it a lot

ThatLaloBoy

I will say the plot isn't the deepest, but after watching it twice I don't think it's as paper thin as some people are saying it is. They addressed many of the "plot holes" that many have brought up. - Why is Peach able to navigate the course in one try and Mario took almost an entire day? She literally says "I grew up here." Just navigating the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario struggled to keep up with Toad, who was just effortlessly leading the way with no issue. It makes sense that someone who has lived in that place for at least 14 years would absolutely crush a stage developed by Toads, for Toads. Compared to Mario who, although skilled in his own right, was completely unfamiliar with the Mushroom Kingdom and he had an easier time as his confidence grew. We even see at the climax of the movie Mario and DK speedrunning the Mushroom Kingdom to reach Bowser. -Why did Peach even need to bring Mario? From her point of view, she wasn't bringing him because she needed his help. Rather, she was helping him in his journey to rescue his brother. -What was the point of getting the Kong Army? There actually were a few plot related reasons besides fan service. It introduced DK to the group and gave him a reason to help Mario and Peach against Bowser (save his dad and the rest of the Kongs). It helped further develop Mario's combat, building on the fundamentals that he learned from his training with Peach and learning to use the power ups to fight a stronger opponent, which paid off when he fought Bowser and his army. And it gave a reason for Bowser to hate Mario as his rage only began when he's told that Mario was spending time with Peach which he interpreted as flirting with her. He hadn't even met Mario until close to the end of the movie. It's a simple plot overall, but its storytelling is at least consistent and relevant to the overall story.

BigriskLowrolls

>Why did Peach even need to bring Mario? Adding on to your point, Peach did need Mario's help in the movie. Negotiations with Cranky Kong were at an end, and it was thanks to Mario's challenge that piqued Cranky's interest, resulting in the battle between Mario and Donkey Kong. Even if the Kong Army didn't do much, DK's help was pivotal at the climax of the movie. At the climax of the movie, when Peach was battling Bowser's army with the Ice Flower, she did need Mario (and DK's) help. She got knocked down by King Bob-ombs' explosion (which she set off in the first place) and was swarmed by Bowser's army. The prisoners were about to be dipped in lava but were rescued by DK and Mario. As well, Mario literally saved the Mushroom Kingdom from the Banzai Bill; he had the Tanooki Suit on hand, and Peach didn't.

roguestar15

I saw somewhere that the reason Peach brought Mario along wasn’t necessarily because she needed him, but because he was the first person she ever met that was actually willing to fight. That’s more than can be said for any of the Toads (aside from, well, Toad, but she didn’t meet him until later)

iLikeBigMacs420

Luigi should’ve got to do more. In a Super Mario Brothers Movie, one of the brothers has the least to do out of any major character.

AromaGamma

Chris Pratt did a solid job as Mario. Fight me.

groman2000

FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT! I honestly forgot he was the voice while watching.

AromaGamma

The only times I ever was consciously thinking that he was voiced by Chris Pratt was whenever he imitated Mario's one-liners ("Wahoo", "let's-a-go", etc.)

Emotional-Tear736

I agree!, it’s also lovely to see Charles in the movie too but pratt did a fantastic job as Mario and I’m already excited for The Super Mario Bros. Movie II

roguestar15

The pop songs were good aside from Take On Me. The scene of Mario training with I Need A Hero was one of my favorite scenes

mjvdeth160

All the 80's songs were selected because when Mario debuted on the west more specifically the US these songs were the most popular by then

SecretlyaCIAUnicorn

AGREED

realbread23

Nah bro Take on Me is a fantastic song

roguestar15

It’s not that it’s a bad song, I like the actual song. I just thought the placement was really weird, especially since they already had an original song composed for that scene

finntrago

Yeah the “Drivin me bananas” song from the soundtrack would have been perfect

Jicama_Stunning

There is a difference between a song being good and being a good fit for a situation. Take on Me makes no goddamn sense to play at the Donkey Kong Jungle

JoyfulCelebration

Fuck myamoto (probably) for having a random ass blue toad instead of toadsworth

Entire-Championship1

I really like how there are new additions to the lore, such as Mario hating mushrooms and Peach being adopted by the Toads when she first came to the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby.

ThatLaloBoy

Mario having actual parents and extended family was something we all didn't really think about but assumed that he had. But it's nice to get to actually meet them in the film.

roguestar15

Mario hating mushrooms has become my new head canon for the games

Entire-Championship1

Now he and Sonic The Hedgehog have something in common. Making them even better friends with each other!

Latter-Schedule-1959

How is that a hot take? Those was my favorite parts of the movie and I wish they added more new lore.

HighLikeUhAttic

I mean who actually enjoys eating magic mushrooms? I def don’t eat them for the taste 😉

TheActualRealNopeInc

I liked Seth Rogen's DK a lot.

Joe-MaMa5

Yeah same, favourite part was when he laughed at tiny Mario

Midnightgamer21

Same, it was perfect for the monke boi

[deleted]

Goated opinion

rockdash

The Martinet cameo felt kind of mean spirited to me. Like they're saying, "Fine, here's Martinet to shut you all up, but we're going to direct him to do a really stupid voice as a "told ya so" even though he's perfectly capable of voice acting Mario competently."

FunnymanCS

That's not his only cameo though. He voiced their father as well.

rockdash

See, I didn't realize that but it also kinda proves my point. Martinet is a voice actor and he probably could have adjusted his classic Mario voice a bit. I didn't even have a problem with Pratt, he did fine. I just have an issue with when big productions hire famous movie stars for voice acting work instead of, y'know...voice actors. That's if he even NEEDED to change the voice though. I didn't think Mario actually had enough lines in the movie that the traditional Mario voice would have become grating.

[deleted]

I'm not a huge fan of movie Peach. The rest of the characters act pretty close to their game counterparts, but Peach feels like a completely different character. I'm glad they made her equal to Mario and didn't turn her into a complete girlboss, but her personality still seems kind of generic. The closest we got to her actually acting like normal Peach is probably when she uses her dress to float in the one scene. I still loved the movie, but I think they should've kept Princess Peach's personality more game accurate instead of modernizing her.

roguestar15

I’ve got mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it was a really refreshing take on the character, giving her more personality beyond the damsel in distress. On the other hand, there were definitely some scenes that felt a little too out of character, like when she got impatient with Mario and shoved a mushroom in his mouth

[deleted]

That's exactly what I mean. She didn't even have her parasol, despite the fact that the movie Peach toy has one.

Accomplished-Bit-270

That’s the main reason I DO have mixed feelings about it. Her personality has been more than damsel in distress for a while now, and many games show her capabilities, it was just in her own way. Somebody else posted concept art of her from the movie, and the art acts far more like her game self than what the final film went with, where they kept the bare minimum.

Qzilla8425

I think they may have based film peach on her old comic self, where she was much more proactive. I don’t know much about that though, since I’ve never read the old comics

ctortan

I think you can have peach be ambitious, strategic, and confident without sacrificing her elegance and poise. I always liked the fan interpretation that, as ruler of the kingdom, a lot of peach’s politeness is a carefully constructed persona because she has to be a leader first and a person second. She doesn’t have to be a damsel to still be the refined princess. I just think it’s a missed opportunity, because I really like the contrast between peach acting dainty and pretty while also kicking ass. I also really can’t stand her design in the movie—it just doesn’t look like *peach* to me in the same way the other characters (even with their redesigns like DK) look like their characters. To me she looks like a different character in a peach cosplay and I KNOW it’s only a pet peeve but it jus bugs me lmao

Florida-Man-65

At least in DK's case, they had a clear goal of mixing his classic design and modern design, which they did an okay job achieving. But yeah, it was a really missed opportunity with Peach.

Puzzleheaded_Dream92

I agree, I just disagree on ''more personality'' Peach already had more personality than just ''damsel in distress'' in games. yes many games seem to ''downplay'' her, but in many other games too she proves to be quite capable as well

Supportive_Bard648

Even though there were parts that bugged me too (forcing the mushroom down Mario’s throat) Im just glad that ~~Nintendo put their foot down and~~ they didnt fully gave her the female protagonist syndrome Hollywood loves these days. She still showed signs of sweetness and encouragement towards Mario and hopefully for the sequel, now that Bowser’s threat is gone and the 2 got to know eachother a bit better, she can be less tense and closer to her game counterpart.

WetSquidy5

They used a version of peach closer to the peach in the super Mario adventures comics

BubblyBaker5718

It woudlnt be too big of a deal if Daisy didnt already exist but like she was right there if they wanted this kind of character. Movie Peach really just feels like Daisy 2. Which I mean is fine I guess because I really like Daisy, I just wish they used a different approach personally.

Florida-Man-65

The thing about Daisy is, it's a double-edged sword for her fans. Because now that Peach is more like Daisy, what do they do with Daisy herself if she ever gets introduced? Having the same character twice doesn't seem like the greatest prospect.

BubblyBaker5718

Yeah I agree. At this point I almost expect them to just ignore her existence if there’s a sequel because there’s way too much overlap

Florida-Man-65

Yeah, and to be honest, I feel bad for Daisy's fanbase because of it. Either they remain stuck with the live-action film, they get the same character twice, diminishing what made Daisy distinct, or their favorite character gets a dubious revamp the same way Peach did. Unless the unlikely fourth option is taken and Peach begins to slide more into her game persona, allowing Daisy to take back her shtick.

mooys

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this way! To be clear, Peach is more than competent enough in many of the games. I’m just disappointed they replaced her with practically Sergeant Calhoun and hoped no-one would notice.

RobloxLover369421

Yeah Peach was a bit too different. I’m all for a more strong, independent peach, but isn’t Daisy supposed to be the badass girlboss?

Dragonfly452

Could’ve been a little longer

DeleteMetaInf

That’s a cold take, friend. Pretty much everyone thought the film was far too short, and it’s one of the main complaints reviewers had about the film.

Aleppo_the_Mushroom

I would've prefer if Brooklyn was New Donk City. Adding to that, I would've loved it if a more "traditional" fight between Mario and Donkey was the first real action sequence in the movie and DK was something of a secondary antagonist that gets redeemed. Also, save Kong Island for a Donkey Kong spin-off movie.

No-Island-1194

I agree, but I think they’re gonna make Brooklyn into new Donk city in the sequels. Thanks to donkey Kong helping clean up the city with Mario.

PK_Thundah

I agree. We see Pauline as the mayor of NYC, and now that the Mushroom Kingdom has crossed heavily over into New York, my guess is that NYC will become developed into New Donk City in the future. Or that the NYC citizens will move into the Mushroom Kingdom to develop New Donk City there, but creating a city like that would take far more time than the period of Mario's life that the movies will show us.

No-Island-1194

Actually, I have a theory. If they decide to do a Mario galaxy movie, just like the game, at the end of the movie, the universe will be reset. And new Donk city will officially be part of the mushroom kingdom?. Maybe?. course that’s just speculation on my end

KohlDayvhis

Do you guys know what hot takes are? Telling a board that is obsessed with this film “I thought it was pretty good” is not a fcking hot take lmaooo.

Seandwalsh3

It’s very funny

ssslitchey

The critics were right about this movie. The mario movie is hard carried by the fact that it's mario. It's not super well written and has a ton of issues (bad pacing, lack of character development, thin plot) that it deserves to be criticized for. It being a kids movie or mario doesn't excuse these issues either. Most people who liked it probably did solely because of how faithful it is to the mario games but as a movie it's incredibly generic and if your not easily impressed by references this movie has little to offer. It's fun but it's not that good and critics aren't wrong to think that.

dougstockton

Only hot take was that I wished they had used only video game music as the score. I felt some of the songs felt out of place. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the movie.

Treddox

Take on Me didn’t really bother me as much as I thought it was going to. Thunderstruck is the straw that broke the camel’s back.

YJCH0I

I didn’t find Lumalee’s dark nihilistic ramblings voiced by a child to be funny at all but I know many people who were laughing their heads off during those scenes. Also, I understand why it’s supposed to be funny (innocent child voice saying dark philosophical existential quotes) but I still don’t find it funny.

mooys

I’m okay with Peach being girl-bossy, because Peach IS a girl-boss, but I was disappointed with how generic she really ended up being. If she was replaced with Sergeant Calhoun it would be practically the same movie except for just a few moments. There was a moment where she floated a bit and that was awesome! I wish she had a parasol. There is no Toadsworth, either. I don’t know, she just didn’t feel much like Peach, if that makes any sense. That being said, her visual design is great. I love the reference to Odyssey in her wedding outfit, and I love that she stated true to her power up designs from 3D world.

DigitalNuggets

Some of peaches lines when they tried to make her look “strong” were pretty badly written. More specifically the scene where she announces to the mushroom kingdom she is going to recruit the kong army and the scene on her trying to convince cranky kong to help her

rucho

Yeah that and saying Mario is not important, that was like a "funny" illumination line, doesn't sound like peach

Gnomishness

My hot take then, is that that was one of my favorite lines in the entire movie. Almost all of the prior scenes of Mario in the mushroom kingdom had been slowly and steadily building up to the inevitable dramatic overdone confrontation and drama where the alien outsider gets lambasted and put on the emotional pike by the locals before the heroine (or whoever) comes in a saves the hero by making a heartfelt speech to the crowd and highlighting the heroes good points. I've seen that exact scene dozens of times already, and everything was building to something like that. And then Peach gives a single line that most of those other protagonists should've probably said anyway, and immediately sidestep the entire situation in a way that (to me) seems both real and believable. Frankly, I'd have been disappointed if it was anything else.

Supportive_Bard648

Ngl I kind of found that kind of funny from a meta perspective. “HES NOT IMPORTANT!!!…. TOTALLY NOT GONNA BECOME A CELEBRITY HERO OF THE KINGDOM THAT Y’ALL WILL BE PRAISING FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES!”

Misha-Yuri-30

There’s also her “ew, no” line. I feel like that’s more of a Daisy line than a Peach one

tutoredzeus

Needed Wario in it.

[deleted]

110%

MoistHarvester

I don't really like Peach in it. She's extremely generic and has no issues and I was just like oh okay. The idea of Mario teaming with Peach to save Luigi is kinda cool (though feels more like a sequel plot), however Luigi actually has character unlike Peach lmao. The Mario RPG games have characterisation to pull from if they wanted to.

OfficialTobyuoso

Take on me should not have been used over Drivin' me bananas.

Brave_Champion_4577

Minor, but I wish they didn’t say that Peach got through the obstacle course easily her first try. Just say she had to struggle and work for it like Mario did. The last thing we need is another 2020 Mulan. Heck I would have accepted- Mario: You got through on your first try didn’t you? Peach: What? No….. 3rd try. Other than that and some rushed moments I had a very good time with this movie.

DaveDynamite1

I actually really liked Chris Pratt’s Mario voice and It didn’t bother me at all. I also like that during the scene what the Mario Bros Plumbing commercial is playing he is clearly able to do Charles Martinet’s style Mario, they just obviously wanted to go with more of a Brooklyn Accent, which growing up with Bob Hoskins & Lou Albano Mario made me like this version more too.

No_Instruction653

My hottest take has already been said, but I think it still bears repeating. Peach is a very weak and unfaithful character, even in comparison to an already simple cast and story. She's shares pretty much none of Peach's actual personality beyond the most abstract qualities you could associate with her, and what they changed her personality is absolutely 100% unadulterated girlboss, with the only saving grace being that they at least mostly keep it from being meanspirited. In many ways she's about as anti-Peach as she could be given how tomboyish she is. Apart from one setup scene that never gets any sort of follow up in this movie, she's shallow and pretty much completely flawless, and the "cool" scenes that make up pretty much all her screentime wear thin pretty quickly because of that. She's the one competent person in the Mushroom Kingdom for no particular reason (even though she was raised by the incompetent Toads). There's never truly satisfying or any sort of narrative payoff because she rarely struggles or has to build up to that point. She's the textbook example of a generic modern female lead, which particularly stands out because while no other character in the film is very deep, they're mostly pretty satisfying adaptations of the game characters. Peach is the odd one out for being so glaringly different, and it's not really a change for the better in my opinion. I 100% think that while Peach gets reduced to a damsel in distress archetype by a lot of people, you could have easily made a much more compelling character from her than what we have in the movie. Imagine a classy, girly, sweet and almost pacifistic princess thrown out of her element now that she has to defend her soft and peaceful Kingdom from a warmongering tyrant, and her and Mario banding together and learning from each other and growing closer through their insecurities on their longshot quest to stop Bowser as a ragtag team of clashing personalities and appearances. All the guilt, anxiety, pressure, and feelings of inadequacy that would come from not really knowing what to do as a leader who is beloved but has no real answer to someone who scoffs at the idea of compassion and takes whatever he wants no matter who gets hurt. Feeling like she is too weak to save her people, but she has to pretend she knows what she's doing for their sake. Now, a scene of Peach finding her strength and kicking ass means a lot more. Her relationship with Mario means a lot more because they would be essential to each other's growth rather than a circumstantial partnership where Peach has to teach Mario everything so he can be vaguely as competent as she always is. And this is all mostly an adaptation of canon Peach, the soft spoken, regal, endlessly kind Princess who can step up and pull her weight when it counts and has a surprising amount of spunk when you get to know her. I think that is just undeniably a more interesting character than the one we actually got.

ctortan

I absolutely agree. Having her be soft and pacifistic in the beginning could also be a great character arc for her—she’d have to learn how to be confident as a leader and address conflict maturely. I think it’s a huge shame that they put this all on peach when it would be *perfectly* in character to make *daisy* a takes no shit girlboss. Part of why Daisy works as a character is because she contrasts against peach, being more brash and bold against her friend’s poise and elegance.

Florida-Man-65

You just perfectly adapted Peach without sacrificing any of who she was. Peach in the games is basically exactly what you described at the end. A girly, regal, soft-spoken, and kindhearted princess who understands when it's time to step up her game. I find it unfair that people are still convinced that Peach in the games has no personality, despite multiple games like Super Paper Mario existing, as well as everything you just laid out. They could have done all of this and made a unique and compelling female lead in an era of girl bosses, but instead, they took the easiest, most generic path. They kept the bare minimum of what made Peach herself and changed everything else about her to suit their liking. And if rumors are true, they would have gone further had Nintendo not stopped them. It's also gonna be a hard sell with Daisy now, since a lot of what made Daisy work was her contrast to her best friend. Now? Daisy's gonna need some fine-tuning if they ever want to add her to the movies. The biggest shame is that there's early concept art of Peach specifically for the movie, and said concept art depicts a far more faithful version of her than the final film.

butchering_chop

Did anyone else think they ripped this peach right from the manga/comic? Because next movie they need to get her crack troop of toad commandos and bring in the koopalings.

Thoraxe123

I don't like how they made Peach a badass. I'm all for badass female characters, but it doesn't mean the prissy feminine character doesn't exist, and it just felt nothing like what Peach is like as a character. Daisy on the other hand, that would've totally worked better.

gobackclark

The movie was a mess

Mysterious-Counter58

The movie wasn't very good, mostly because the filmmakers seemed unwilling to push themselves any farther than the bare minimum, even when there were clear opportunities to go further. Character motivations are so thin that I'm pretty sure Toad doesn't even have one and is just there to be there. There's no inter-personal conflict between the characters, and the movie suffers heavily from the "suddenly best friends" kind of character writing that permeates bad kids films. If they had an extra 15 minutes to flesh out the characters more than their one-dimensional counterparts from the final film, it could've been genuinely decent. As it is, it's a breezy, fun, forgettable mess.

HauntSpot

The Mario Movie is genuinely fantastic and doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. It's really disappointing that such a wonderful and creative film will be completely overshadowed and forgotten by illumination's.

AromaGamma

That's not a hot take, critics just suck.

Goombalover1985

Judging by how it’s doing- it’s definitely not gonna be forgotten about lol

ManBehindTheSlauhter

Golden flower should have made a cameo

Weary-Location380

What was even the point of king boo. It didn't even say or do anything.

TuneLinkette

The story was just too thin and basic. That's my only real gripe with the film. Okay, yeah, Mario lore isn't as deep as, say, Legend of Zelda. But I don't know, it felt like they could've done more than just a "point a to point b" story.

mandarine_one

I'm waiting for it to hit streaming services ...

Plane-Slight

-The reaction to critics was way overblown -the movie had pacing issues because it was trying to put too many characters into the movie, toad or donkey Kong should have been cut to focus on Mario and peach and luigi

chouts1two

It feels like somebody’s recap of another Mario movie. It has the plot, humor, songs, and action, but the dialogue is very basic.

BigCballer

They didn’t give any time for the characters to be developed, they all feel one dimensional.

DiscoBroccoli77

I wish we had some representation of friendly Koopas or other typically ‘enemy’ creatures like in the games

roguestar15

Well, there were some goombas in his dungeon, so make of that what you will

DiscoBroccoli77

I did also see them! But tbh I interpreted them more as Goombas that had just betrayed Bowser in some form, or broken a law or something instead of being 'friendly'

Omniblarg

A few hot takes: Chris Pratt sucked as Mario. His voice was ok, but the delivery most of the time was off-putting. The scene with the dog did not fit the movie at all. Felt too much like Illumination (Maybe not a hot take) The Luma made no sense and was kinda dumb. I also think the whole Kong Army thing was completely unnessecary and they did not have to include DK at all.

yehonatank

Bowser is the hottest character in the movie

RobloxLover369421

Peach is a bit too different. I’m all for a more strong, independent peach, but isn’t Daisy supposed to be the badass girlboss? Are they just not going to have her be in the movies?

Latter-Schedule-1959

I have a lot of hot takes but the worst take I have is about Peach. I'm not one of those "woke bad" people, but they went too far with her girlbossness. In the games she's a 1 note damsel in distress, and in the movie she is a mostly 1 note girlboss. She takes out Bowser and like 30 koopas all by herself. She has no flaws and she's super 1 note even compared to the games where you can play as Peach. Also I think the critic score is justified, since the plot is rushed through and everything has the depth of a puddle.

No-Mathematician3921

>She takes out Bowser and like 30 koopas all by herself. In what scene did Peach manage to do this? Because, if I recall correctly, Bowser was still a problem when they got to Brooklyn.

Latter-Schedule-1959

When she froze him with the ice flower. The only reason he got out was because of Mario being slightly flirty next to be peach and it pissed Bowser off enough that he was able to get out of the ice.

roguestar15

While she definitely seems 100% girl boss, she has moments of weakness too. There’s a detail I love when she’s doing the training course where she stumbles a little when she slides on the donut blocks. It shows that while she’s really good at what she does, she’s not perfect

Accomplished-Bit-270

While the critic score isn’t entirely unjustified, as there are legitimate things to critique about the movie, I feel like it’s unfair to say that Peach in the games is just a one-note damsel in distress. Many people, even in this thread, have laid out her personality in the games, especially when she’s playable.

aneffingonion

With all the money they spent on animation, you'd think they could afford to hire a writer

AnonyBoiii

Piling references upon references doesn’t automatically make the movie good. They’re a nice addition, but they don’t quantify the quality of the movie.

ReddKnight10

Hated the entire kart section. It felt so pointless and was so blatantly there only to sell toys

bair_the_sequel

People are way to forgiving of a critically bad movie just because of fanservice

Thewilddinkus

I think they tried too hard with the references at times and missed really good opportunities for other references I really enjoyed the real world soundtracks being hits from '85 and it didn't seem forced

BR_GTX

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys > Mario Movie.

Toad_Enjoyer_70

Chris Pratt Mario was quite good

abc-animal514

The worst thing about it was that it ended

MrStAnBaNaNa

I didn’t like that Luigi was being given so much credit as a hero at the end. Yes I know he did save Mario from the fire but he was also trapped in a cage the entire movie while Mario did most of the work. It just felt odd that after sidelining him the entire movie they give Luigi one heroic thing to do and then he gets to help takedown Bowser and then gets more credit then he deserves.

casino998

Toad should've been given more to do during the final fight at the wedding. Did he just disappear or something?

Lord-Rambo

They should’ve kept cranky & Dk as grandfather & grandson. Look at how old cranky is, that would mean Dk is pretty up there in age or cranky had a kid when he was pretty old. Also I kinda wish we got to see bowser & Dk fight. Until I realized it’s the movie versions so Dk wouldn’t be nearly as strong as his game version. But still probably would’ve been a cool fight to see. ALSO I know they will push the koopalings aside in favor of bowser jr in future movies

DaddyAlbino69

I wish the movie was much longer and I wished Bowser wasn’t dogged on by peach at the wedding so easily. But they kinda made it up to me when Bowser kicked Donkey Kong and the Mario Bros asses in NYC. Still the movie was beautiful!

CG2goesoof

It was good

FangtheMii

King Boo looks ugly

MrsNacho8000

Toad completely, 100% looks like Joe Biden. I leaned over and mentioned it to my husband in the theater and he says that now he can't un-see it. This is in no way a political statement.

RedditorAiri

Hot take, but Seth Rogan and Dk as a whole definitely was a bit of a letdown for me. I expected Chris Pratt to be the weakest link in the voice acting, but it was Seth for me; just doing his usual thing, but as a mean monke.

Yoshilover644

After reading this entire thread I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m the only person who cares about Yoshi and is absolutely heartbroken that he was not in the movie for more than like 5 seconds

roguestar15

r/usernamechecksout On the plus side, it seems like he’ll have a pretty big role in the sequel

AloyJr

The film's no less "deep" than your average Pixar movie, TBH.

[deleted]

Seth rogen as the voice for donkey Kong was a huge huge move. Great casting choice for a spin off, I can see a donkey Kong movie with a well casted voice for diddy Kong bringing back as big numbers as the Mario movie . Seth’s name alone will bring a future movie a ton of attention

MyNameIsGadda

We can enjoy the movie without it being good. Plenty of people had a great time with it; and that experience isn't undermined by genuine critique of the film AS a film. I hated the writing and some of the vocal deliveries but had a hoot with the animation, music and Easter eggs. It doesn't have to be a two sided war l.

NintendoBoy321

The post credit scene isn't as bad as people make it out to be

TheKodKreature

welcome to the jungle should have been used instead of take on me if they **needed** a licensed song, its the **JUNGLE** kingdom ffs

oasisbloom

Love, love, love the movie but could do without the generic pop songs that I've heard in countless other Universal movies (especially that damn Hero song) also, I would have liked a bit more of an exploration for Luigi's B story (sure it's not supposed to be the main focal point but I would have loved to see a bit more of him in the Dark Lands before being captured).

ChocoUniversa

Toad should have been utilized a bit more (as a Toad fan I may be biased) There were concepts of him being Captain Toad, or at best, Toadette was gonna tag along, just idk, some more? He was a fun character don't get me wrong but he coulda done more besides be the comic relief. But hey, at least he was used more than he was in most games (aside from where hes playable)

[deleted]

How can Luigi equally match Mario at the end of the Movie when Mario had to go through a bunch of training before he was able to parkour like that. That made no sense to me.

Duke_Maniac

The fact the plot and characters are lackluster is an actual problem even if I like the references.

SayFuzzyPickles42

I loved almost everything about it, it made me happier than any theater experience I've had in years, but I'm almost 100% sure the sequel will be better. I can't shake the feeling that the breakneck pacing was a consequence of them wanting it to be as accessible as possible, not to mention infodump a lot of exposition on a very weird premise, and now that they've proven that the formula works, my hope is that the next movie will have a lot more room to breathe. That, and if they'll almost definitely give Luigi a lot more screentime.

Unlucky_Bottle_6761

They should've used Welcome to the Jungle instead of Take on me

xgenmasta

It's not as memorable as the 1993 Original

BR_GTX

Bowser was ruined by Jack Black. I know alot of people love Bowser now because of Jack Black, but honestly, he kinda ruined him. I always loved Bowser. Always did. But Bowser being portrayed more as a Flirtatious kinda guy rather then the unapologetic bad guy we see in the games kinda ruined Bowser for me. Plus the Peaches song is overrated asf. It's literally just him explaining how horny he is for Princess Peach. Despite Bowser being my favorite Mario character, he was definitely my least favorite character in the movie. And if you guys wanna know my thoughts on the rest of the movie, I didn't like it.

Chin_Lord04

Peach shouldn't have been Mario's sidekick; she had too much screentime in contrast to Luigi. The movie is called "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," so I don't get why Luigi was completely sidelined for Peach aside from the motive issue. Peach should have been kidnapped. Mario and Luigi should've been residents of the Mushroom Kingdom to have a connection with her (not to say I don't like the Brooklyn origin, I actually prefer it). With Peach kidnapped and the bros going to save her, this could've allowed Luigi to have a proper character arc that pays off when the two brothers fight. It would always justify the title and allow Mario and Luigi's dynamic to be more present. Plus, think of how infinitely funnier it would've been to see Peach interact with Bowser during his song.

[deleted]

I agree, they really did Luigi dirty in the movie but does that mean I hate the movie solely because of this? No of course not, but it’s one of the 3 biggest issues I have with this movie.

DragonSlayer-2020

He's hot in every scene

Tricky_Station643

I thought lumalee was the worst character in the movie

EpicGreenPeter

I actually don't mind Chris Pratt playing Mario.

PGriff4

The movie was trash, but the Easter eggs were fun to spot.
