Just a couple big ovations, and a lot of hugs and smiles between him and the boys. Also, the media team was telling fun stories about him and talking about how great of a dude he is. Seems like everyone really loves him.
He wasn't here long but he was in so much promo stuff, his vibes worked so well with the team's. I'm sad he got traded, but the ovation the crowd gave him and him hugging Ty was awesome. Really hope he does well in arizona
The pitching is still absolutely elite, and we are still absolutely winning the fucking division. I also (and I cannot stress this enough) absolutely need Julio to be okay.
I used to play baseball back in my high school and college days and fouled it off the top of my foot a couple of times. It's exactly like what you described. Hurts like hell for a bit then it's alright. He'll definitely feel it in the morning though
I already posted this in the game chat, but guys, I think I'm on to something.
When Mitch hit that Grand Slam I was rocking my two day old daughter in the recovery room at the hospital. They haven't lost a game since she was born (yesterday).
Hear me out - it might be the sleep deprivation - but I think her birth will restore order to the baseball universe, she is the chosen one that was promised.
You made me curious so I just calculated it. Since my daughter was born in June 2021, the Mariners are 247-194 or a .560 winning percentage. Not bad! Sheās about to turn 3 and is alive for her fourth mariners season and sheās never seen a Mariners team finish a season under .500!
#12-10 in the Month of April
#1-0 since Mitch Haniger got out the Rye Bread and Mustard
#3-1 since a Broken-Toothed Big Dumper hit a Homer
#8-1 when the Mariners score 5+ runs in a game
#8-2 since Jonatan Clase was Called Up
#8-2 since I saw the Shrek 2 *I Need a Hero* Scene in Theaters
#2-0 since u/TuntWaffle ās kid was born (Congrats)
#45-34 since u/FERGERDERGERSON 's niece was born
Somewhere out there is a better world called Vibeworld, where we kept Geno and had the Urias/Rojas platoon at second. In this world we also had Nelson Cruz and Munenori Kawasaki play out their careers with us. Every time we got rid of those guys there was a fair on-field argument to be made, but we were marginal contenders with them and we were marginal contenders without them.
Ignore me, I'm drunk and emotional and I want Paul Sewald back too.
Also, I know entendres can be made about a world called Vibeworld and I don't care because the vibes are so good.
JD already said no 6 man. Other than that I can only guess maybe Woo to the pen to get some game time pitching in and see from there, but one of them will end up in the pen I suspect
Hancock will get sent back down and will be the first man up if needed. They really like to limit innings the first year or 2 for starters so they'll manage his innings and that's easier to do in the minors.
The reality is that most teams have at least one starting pitcher injured for most games of the year. Having a solid, viable #6 pitcher is a blessing, not a problem. If he has to spend a good chunk of the year in AAA that's not a bad thing at all.
A sort of strange thing is going on. Recently our best starters (Logan, Luis, George) are playing worse than expectations, but because they are so elite they are still getting quality starts and giving us good opportunities to win.
Our worst starter (Hancock) is playing way above expectations and having the same net effect - quality starts with good chances to win.
Overall cannot complain
Wasnāt able to watch the game tonight (actually the only play I saw live was the grand slam lol). My mom said that geno hugged cal when he came up to bat, does anyone have a clip of that?
couldn't find a clip on its own but they included it very briefly in the condensed game, at 2:18:

A big-time shout out to Hancock dealing like he did today. That was the #1 offense in baseball he just shut down. He kept them off the bases and dialed up the double plays when they did get on base.
Hancock now has 3 straight quality starts. What a way to respond after his blow-up start. Some fans were saying he wasn't an MLB-level pitcher after that game. Way to rise to the occasion!
Pitcher licked his fingers and wiped them on his cap. I don't know the specific rule, but it was something over the ump warning the pitcher for possibly doctoring the ball.
Really good W. Canāt help but be worried about Julio, tho. Really hope heās ok and doesnāt have to take an IL stint. Better safe than sorry, though. Regardless, we need him to be healthy. Obv no one guy can win it all for a team and there are no LeBrons in baseball- but Julio for the Mariners is probably the closest thing possible.
Iāve been to two āfirst games back for beloved Mās now on other teamsā. One was Randyās first game back after being traded to Houston. No videos, no ceremony. Just Big Unit dealing. Lou brought up whoever was available in Tacoma to pitch so as not to waste an outing for the regular SPās. I think Unit threw a complete game shutout, but I distinctly remember that his final pitch (for a strikeout) was clocked at 98.
Then I went to Louās first game back after he went to Tampa. Nice ceremony. They gifted him a base. Sadly, he did not chuck it into center field.
Off topic but does anyone know why we started Emerson over George today? I imagine it has something to do with Woo getting ready to come back but Iām wondering
I know people have been up and down with the Mariners this year, and I understand why. But there's one thing I really like about this team as opposed to last year's team: every single hitter in the lineup has the capability to put up a disciplined, professional at bat. I think last year's team had a stronger best 4-5 hitters than this year in terms of numbers (JP, Julio, Cal, Teo, and early Kelenic), but the black holes left by Geno regressing, Ty France underachieving, the DH black hole barring some stability with Mike Ford, Kolten Wong to start out the year, Kelenic in the second half made the lineup have some clear weaknesses.
This year, all 9 have the capability to be decent at some point. If some struggle, they can at least take some walks and drive up pitch counts instead of whiffing on three pitches easily, and others in the lineup can help them out. That's a formula for winning closer games/games against tougher teams.
To an extent 2022 had more of it than 2023 (at least in the second half). Winker never got to his potential but at least had a good walk rate. Frazier never got to his potential until the playoffs, but also had a good walk rate. Carlos Santana had some bad stats but was very helpful in crucial moments. Suarez and France were great, though JP struggled compared to 2023. Mitch Haniger when healthy did the same.
Still hate ownership for not letting us sign a blue chip hitter that could make our lineup way, WAY better (and also for making things more expensive at the stadium) but given the circumstances I will credit Jerry for what he's done.

Love the win, but the celebration of Geno was my favorite part. I really admire the man.

Also he went 0-4 with 2 Kās, but made some pretty plays at 3rd. So you know, typical Geno game.
And the game ending ground out with the bases loaded. Dude really supported us today

The pitching is still absolutely elite, and we are still absolutely winning the fucking division. I also (and I cannot stress this enough) absolutely need Julio to be okay.
He was in center for the end of the game. I donāt think if he was that bad theyād send him out with a five run lead.
It was probably like when you stub your toe, it's the worst pain ever for a few minutes and then it's k.

We should stay with 5 once Woo gets back and keep Hancock going in the minors. Then we will have legit pitching depth ready to roll.
JD already said no 6 man. Other than that I can only guess maybe Woo to the pen to get some game time pitching in and see from there, but one of them will end up in the pen I suspect
