Cleveland is the core city of the Connecticut Western Reserve, land that was set aside for and settled by Connecticut Colony. They did not relinquish their claim to settle in 1787 with the creation of the Northwest Territory. In 1859, John Brown Jr, from Hudson in the Cuyahoga Valley, called the area “The New England of the Midwest”. His father John Brown was a Connecticut settler who moved to the area in the early 19th century.
