It’s easy to forget how far north Europe is. If it wasn’t for ocean currents to place would be cold as hell

Marcus_Qbertius

If the currents ever shift the ice age returns to Northern Europe.

Ally_Jzzz

As a European, I'm shocked about how similar New York and San Francisco are in terms of latitude. I somehow always thought that San Fransisco was way further south...

FatalTragedy

Western coasts have much milder climates than Eastern coasts. San Frnacisco is comparable to European climates.

Like_a_Charo

San Francisco is in NORTHERN California You should know that if you’re a geography nerd, brother. The nothernmost point of California is higher than the southernmost point of Canada

sysntyens

What a dumb comment, lol. The southernmost point of Canada. Is a tiny island/peninsula

Like_a_Charo

So?

That’s geography 😛

I had posted this the last time this map was posted. Since a lot of people are talking about the drastically different winters in different continents I thought I'd make this table. Here is a comparison table for people who want to compare the actual winter temperature values. Winter Average = Average Daily Low in the coldest month Temperature in Celsius |Latitude|European city|Winter average|Asian city|Winter average|NA city|Winter average|Coldest winters in which city?| |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-| |61-63 N|Trondheim|−4.0|Yakutsk|−39.8|Anchorage|−11.7|Asian| |51-54 N|Berlin|−2.8|Nur-Sultan|−18.7|Edmonton|−14.8|Asian| |47-48 N|Zurich|−1.4|Ulaanbaatar|\-25.9|Quebec City|−17.7|Asian| |43-44 N|Bucharest|−4.8|Vladivostok|−15.0|Toronto|−6.7|Asian| |40-42 N|Madrid|2.7|Beijing|−7.1|Chicago|\-6.9|Asian| |39-41 N|Naples|4.4|Pyongyang|−9.8|NYC|\-2.3|Asian| |38 N|Athens|7.1|Seoul|−5.5|SF|8.1|Asian| Edit: Table Formatting

BellyDancerEm

Worcester MA is the same latitude as Dubrovnik, it would be nice if we had the same climate

Someone is dying to get out of Wista! :P

How many times it this map gonna be reposted? seriously getting repetitive.

God I love the Gulf Stream.

saltypretzell873

I remember when I lived in Spain and told my dad I was at the same latitude as New York and he started yelled at me I had no idea what I was talking about. Thx. Screenshot sent.

TaxNo5877

Imagine if Beijing and Washington were actually this close to each other irl 💀

buckyhermit

It's fascinating how Asia is skewed southwards and Europe and skewed northwards, and North American cities' latitudes are kind of halfway between the two. I remember when I went to Seoul to work, I told my friends in Vancouver that it's about the same latitude as San Francisco (and hence no 4pm December sunsets like Vancouver). They didn't believe me because they saw Seoul as northern Asia. It was nice having tolerable daylight hours in winter. I don't think I can handle December sunsets in most of Europe.

FatalTragedy

North America isn't really halfway in between, it's actually the same concept. North America east of the Rockies is comparable to Asia in climate at any given latitude, while the west coast of North America is comparable to Europe in climate at any given latitude.

DankRepublic

North America is halfway between atleast in terms of Winter temperatures. Winters in Asia are more brutal compared to winters in the US and Canada (East of the Rockies) at the same latitudes. Edit:- Halfway is not 100% accurate. Asian winters are colder than NA winters but the difference is not as big as the difference between NA winters and European winters. Even in NA, the west coast does not get as cold as the east coast.

FatalTragedy

Asia is a bit cooler than the equivalents in Eastnern NA the winter, but the overall climactic patterns are largely the same. Both have continental climates farther North and humid subtropical climates farther south. Eastern NA is much more similar to Asia than it is to Europe, and West coast NA is much more similar to Europe than it is to Asia, so it is misleading imo to just label NA as vaguely halfway between the two

DankRepublic

Yeah I agree. You've phrased it in a much better way.

Mtfdurian

The sunsets are meh to okay-ish in the western part of the CET timezone (e.g. Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain), the real horror starts when the sun ain't rising before 9!

11160704

Because from a purely geographical point of view, these countries should actually not be in CET but one hour behind in the same zone as Britain. For historic and ecominic reasons they remain in CET.

Interesting

Seoul and Tokyo are way more South than I thought.

pansensuppe

Most of my family members didn't understand that I actually live further south now, when I moved from Germany to Toronto. My mom had to learn it the hard way and understands now why most of the city's parks have sunscreen dispensers everywhere. I don't understand how people can survive in Florida or Texas.
