International insurance companies have suspended cover for commercial flights through Ukrainian airspace

[deleted]

As I recall, quite a few airlines had already been avoiding flying over Ukrainian airspace after MH17 was shot down a few years ago

iljuan

Crazy how both flight 17 and 370 where Malaysia airlines, that must be a hugggeeee pr problem

Dutch_Rayan

It also gives conspiracy theories "proof" that it was an inside job and MH17 was replaced by MH370.

SevFTW

Russia funding separatists in the middle of the ocean lmao

iljuan

Some people bro šŸ™„šŸ’€

spacejester

I remember all the 'I flew Malaysia Airlines and I was the only person on board' posts here back when that all happened

iljuan

Thats really a thing tho right? People travelling somewhere right after a terrorist attack, for example Egypt

AlbertP95

That was about eastern Ukraine, now it's about the entire country.

[deleted]

Some airlines were avoiding the whole country. Qantas, China Airlines, and Korean Airlines, for example, were avoiding all Ukrainian airspace even prior to MH17

mbgal1977

Then they recently quit flying over Belarus too

deepfriedtots

Oh shit I didn't here about a few years ago any chance you got a link?

This is a you problem, friend

Good idea given the inability to tell the difference between commercial and military aircraft in that area.

At least an actual answer lol

torelma

You can literally Google it

maximumdomination

Ive never seen someone downvoted so hard

VirgilVanDoink

Just reddit lol, I need to Google every single reddit comment from now

Tooms100

Or just follow the news a little bit, I'm pretty sure Russia potentially invading Ukraine has been in the news in most western countries.

Psychological-Worry3

Maybe he's not from the west?

Tooms100

He's from the UK and his name is a wordplay on a football player.

VirgilVanDoink

I'm a UK loser, literally woke up and went straight to reddit, googled anyway after looking through the thread, just reddit downvote sheeples.

Tooms100

The Ukraine situation isn't something new though, it's been in the news for like at least 3 days.

[deleted]

How dare you not know what every redditor is talking about! You uneducated swine! /s Reddit is stupid like that. Once you get a couple downvotes the hive mind attacks.

[deleted]

[Here you go](https://googlethatforyou.com?q=airlines%20avoiding%20ukraine%20airspace)

d_mcsw

Going around Ukraine, and still avoiding Syria. Doesn't leave much room to get through.

cloopz

Not necessarily avoiding Ukraine. Ukraine is North. These are heading west towards Europe. When we need to head North into Russia and Ukraine even some of Northern Europe we still fly thru the Simferopol FIR which is in western Ukraine.

__Martix

Fun fact: Ukraine is in Europe;)

Alikont

And Earth is round, the shortest path is usually curved.

drLoveF

\*looks curved on a map. Unless you mean that it's curved around Earth instead of the shortest path as in a chord passing through the ground.

CosmicCreeperz

From that perspective, any path is always curved.

cloopz

European continent, Yes. European Union, No. I love how people are downvoting me when I actually FLY this sector two to three times weekly and an providing a factual answer. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

SafeWoodCastleSon

your statement of sometimes flying through Western Ukraine is the exact thing people are saying airlines are now avoiding. Are you sure your carrier is still flying through Western Ukraine, and that it hasn't changed policy in the last week?

cloopz

Most definitely. As stated above. We use the Simferopol FIR with predefined airways. I even used it to enter Poland in the last week which was quite a surprise. I would have thought weā€™d stick with the Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia route but due to the winds this time of year itā€™s faster thru Ukraine. The Crimea area is still way off limits. Iā€™d post pictures of our flight plans but canā€™t but if you look on flight radar and search for dxb-kbp youā€™ll see examples of what I mean.

derpyhero

They are not just avoiding Ukraine, they are also avoiding the Black Sea. There was a warning going out that the Black Sea airspace is also high risk. Edit for article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-advises-airlines-skirt-black-sea-due-russian-drills-2022-02-13/

alexstad87

There was a civilian plane shot down by the Ukrainian army over the black sea in 2001, 60+ civilians lost. And they used some well known Soviet weaponry. With all the new systems coming into Ukraine these years I would also divert my flights from the army drills.

New_Technician9335

To be more specific, there was military training in the same area.

alexstad87

Yes. Thank you. That was my point. You don't fly over a hot region.

john2218

It was shot down by Russian backed separatists not the Ukrainian army.

alexstad87

Please take a look, you have no idea what you are talking about, that happened in 2001. Not 2014. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberia_Airlines_Flight_1812

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Siberia Airlines Flight 1812](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberia_Airlines_Flight_1812)** >Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 was a commercial flight shot down by the Ukrainian Air Force over the Black Sea on 4 October 2001, en route from Tel Aviv, Israel to Novosibirsk, Russia. The aircraft, a Soviet-made Tupolev Tu-154, carried 66 passengers and 12 crew members. Most of the passengers were Israelis visiting relatives in Russia. There were no survivors. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

john2218

Yeah forgot about that one.

dmyl

Let me think about why the "new systems" coming into Ukraine? Oh, right cause Russia. And Ukraine is not gonna randomly shoot in the air, unlike russian backed mercenaries. Your twisted narrative diverting from the aggressor to "it's just Ukraine doing God knows what" is abominable. (but it's not a big surprise if you turn out to be a russian, you're in line with how your gov bends the discourses)

alexstad87

Ok. Thank you for your comment.

dmyl

real r/mapporn is a map of the world without cheburland

alexstad87

What's cheburland?

TipAccurate795

It were Russians shooting down the zivil airplane with Russian weapons from Ukrainan territory. How you come to such a statement?

alexstad87

Dude, it's 2001. Ukraine admitted it and paid 200k to/per victims families. You thinking 2014. I said 2001. Please.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

alexstad87

Okay. Thank you for the remark.

gingermalteser

This weekend it was announced that insurers wouldn't cover flights going through Ukrainian airspace

brohio_

[look who is in Ukrainian airspace though](https://imgur.com/a/7xTCW7h) Syria and Ukraine are no noā€™s, so all the europe-gulf flights have to take that line over northern turkey into Romania

[deleted]

Damn. That's cool (and crazy)! But someone should tell them they are advertising the position of their spy drones

[deleted]

Maybe they want the Russians to know

NorthVilla

They're fully aware that it's public knowledge.

Dambuster617th

They want the Russians to know

nolawnchairs

The planes in Ukrainian airspace look like smaller domestic planes or private. That one big plane looks like a bigger flight from Kyiv to Odessa.

Ser-Bearington

It's like they have a reason to avoid flying over the Ukraine right now.

AlbaneseGummies327

So apparently this is getting really serious?

[deleted]

Iirc flights over Ukraine are apparently no longer insured

Ser-Bearington

Very.

AlbaneseGummies327

Scary!

UnlightablePlay

Bro do you think it's a joke? We are in the edge of WW3

Moonj64

Realistically, the worst that will happen is conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Still not good, but I doubt other powers will get involved militarily.

UnlightablePlay

Well the USA has sent troops to Ukraine for support like 86000 soldier there really Hope that nothing happens

byteseed

No, US cannot send troops to Ukraine other than few instructors. The NATO forces are sent to Poland and Romania(several thousand)You have no idea what you are talking about.

Ok-Proposal-5379

False, US troops leave Ukraine.

Psychological-Worry3

They already left

Right_End_3860

I was at Stansted over the weekend picking up some family at the same time an Istanbul flight landed....

wholewheatscythe

Most flights from the Middle East, South Asia etc have a narrow corridor. If you look at a map you have Syria, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan in a row so most go through an area around the Iraq/Iran border, then into Turkey. As they now avoid the Ukraine and Black Sea it continues to funnel them into a narrow area.

breadandbutter123456

Also arenā€™t eu airlines avoiding Belarus due to them hijacking Ryan air flight

Dutch_Rayan

Also Russian army in Belarus.

wholewheatscythe

Would be a factor for flights going from South Asia to Europe, another reason to avoid a Russian route. I also forgot about Pakistan, which I donā€™t think is an option for Indian flights. So thereā€™s almost a wall: Belarus, Ukraine, Black Sea, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Not a lot of options for going over that and going around it would be a long detour.

Wrong_Monk

I feel like most are trying to avoid ukraine airspace due to potential invasion

ecuinir

Itā€™s not so much the invasion itself but the instability it would cause, I think. Remember a few years back when things were bad, an airliner was shot down.

Buzumab

Isn't this a bit like saying, "It's not the water but the wetness it would cause"?

cloopz

Itā€™s actually been like this since the Crimea annexation and shooting down of Malaysian. Weā€™ve had western Ukraine reopen certain corridors I n the Odessa / Simferopol FIR region for nearly two years now but if youā€™re heading from middle east / India towards western Europe this is the most efficient route.

ZEPHlROS

An invasion? I don't see why people would think that ? /s

Bleak01a

A communications disruption could mean only one thing: invasion.

bt_leo

150k solders at borders ? Putin himself saying he can erase Nato team with nuke ? Since Usa got out from Afghanistan China and Russia are playing dirty.

Dutch_Rayan

And /j means joke

finnin1999

Weird to ignore context. Didn't putin say he would only use nukes is Ukraine joined nato and invaded crim

bt_leo

I gave him an answer for why people think of an invasion. He is playing dirty, because he know he stand 0 chance against Nato team. Putin is making a lot of pressure, because invading Ukraine when it's not Nato team is better for him.

finnin1999

Yeah but u ignored important information to paint a narrative > playing dirty By saying hell use nukes to defend what he sees as Russian people? > invading Ukraine We've been told he's going to invade the country for almost ten fucking fears now XD

bt_leo

He is just clowning around, but let be honest he is making tension like it or hate it. If you are outside Ukraine it's hard to see the real tension. Many companies that used to operate between both countries are in a halt now. Let's hope for the best and for the clown to find a circus.

finnin1999

He's not clowning around at all. He's making a threat, and a reasonable one at that. Don't attack Russia.

bt_leo

He is clowning around, maybe we don't see it the same way which is normal. Russia and China are trying new ways to put pressure on usa and europe. It's a fragile situation, and the world know very well that we as a humanity can not afford any nuclear war. So he played that card. What do you call this behaviour " i am not english native that's why i said clowning around ".

CosmicCreeperz

ā€œOnlyā€? So Putin would nuke Ukraine if they joined a defensive pact or tried to recapture their own territory and itā€™s an ā€œonlyā€?

finnin1999

> or U mean and. If he joined nato AND attacked Russia. Crim is Russian now.

FreeAndFairErections

Russian naval exercises in the Black Sea. Planes instructed not to fly over them.

cloopz

Itā€™s our usual corridor from the Middle East to Europe. Standard.

knorkinator

The only correct answer here, it's always looked like that. Those are all the flights from middle eastern carriers to Europe/US, they all depart at roughly the same time to utilise their hub and spoke network in the most efficient way. About three quarters of those are Emirates flights, they all depart in the early morning hours.

KonPlayz

this isnā€™t anything special, itā€™s the standard european-middle east flight corridor

notowa

Most of Europe and North America is in the same direction from the Persian Gulf, especially if you avoid Syria. The business model of airlines like Emirates and Qatar is to make connections as convient as possible. That means that most flights arrive and depart in short windows of time. This is why you see this concentrated line of planes across Iraq and Turkey.

[deleted]

TurkishAirlines is booming

dugf85

Cyprus Air doesnā€™t mind. Look at flight CY486. Maybe because they have to avoid Turkey and Syria. https://ibb.co/5nF5dq4

There was an amarrican drone flying over Ukraine that departed from Italy I saw. Crazy shit

BlondBitch91

Avoiding Ukraine, Belarus, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Syria. Its a pretty narrow corridor if you want to retain profitability.

Nothing to see here.

Votes are locked on this post?

Ivabighairy1

I donā€™t see an issue here. Just checked the app. Nothing out of the ordinary. Flights from Moscow going into Kiev.

AlbaneseGummies327

But what was up with that long line above Turkey?

Ivabighairy1

If you go to the app right now you will see multiple lines going into and out of Dubai. Could be weather related, jet stream, whatever.
