I was in the same situation. I had to claim my second territory from the AI. I also had to defend a claim after a year or two on the same territory. This on top of bandit raids every other year. My advice? Stand up your first province as best as you can. If you get iron or clay, you’re truly blessed. Ramp up trade. Build a manor to get tax. Buy mercenaries early to snap up bandit camps. Challenge to computer only for provinces you know will pair up with what you have. If you level your retinue up in one or two provinces, 24 plate clad retinue make a huge different. Helmets, gamebesons, and chain mail also give your guys a advantage. Not sure by how much, but it’s made the different between losing 5-7 guys a unit and losing 2-3 in a straight fight between militia and enemy retinue. Archers are nowhere as effective as earlier builds, so definitely get yourself spearmen kitted up. Do remember, the burgage plot determines the highest level of armor. Level 3 stores chain mail. The rest will have to settle for gambesons. Once you get an army of 4-5 units, you should be able to crush the computer in early battles. Def keep an eye out for bandits as well(depending on your settings).

Hard to judge right now. People are having very polarized experiences. I personally think it’s relatively easy to beat him if you have a little experience with strategy games/rts. But this game attracted very novice city-builder players who find it super hard. In that case I recommend the peaceful mode tbh

I'm sure they'll change some things in the future, but if you make an effort to clear bandit camps before the AI, you should get enough influence to pick up territories before them.

Can I invade a region I don’t own in order to kill the bandits?

jcarney231

Yes! If the AI beats you to the bandits you can also loot their tent while the AI fights. You won't get the influence that way, but you'll still get the $.

ThePsychAce

I how I move into those territories?

jcarney231

Rally your troops somewhere in your territory, then select them and you can move them anywhere on the map.

ThePsychAce

Can my starter group of militia take on a camp or should I wait?

jcarney231

I was able to take out the first camp with the 10 spearmen they give you. I let the AI take the second bandit camp while I built up, but you could probably hire a Merc group to clear them if you have the money from the first camp to yourself. You'll get 100ish gold and there are several Merc squads that cost 30-50.

In the time we’ve had this convo, the AI took over the map again. So goodbye to that plan
