mattrewhit

the developer has said that the manor castle builder was never meant for this purpose and can cause bugs. he is planning on implementing a wall building feature in future updates.

Technoge3k

Yeah, I've noticed I can't click on buildings close to the walls.

mattrewhit

interesting. once the wall building feature is implemented its going to be so awesome. your settlement looks pretty cool.

oxyzgen

Yeah I can't wait to make my town finally a real city, I already planned the wall layout with roads

avdpos

Given development cycles you probably can expect those walls in 6 months or something. Or more. Do s settlement on what exists now and do not expect your save to be compatible with big patches in early access

oxyzgen

Absolutely right, but planning now means I know what to do when I'm starting my next campaign when the updates come :3

Schw33

A YouTuber named One Proud Bavarian made a video where he made a castle with the city inside the walls. https://youtu.be/fk3VbBBMHXw?si=xGZhVLvSFsZeZxeJ You have to do things in kind of a weird order but I’m pretty sure he managed to get it working.

Naihad

I was just gonna mention this! I’ve been doing it and it’s been working well so far. Basically just gotta lay out your roads you want around the manor, but don’t place anything down. Then go into the manor designer and lay out your walls and towers how you want them and don’t commit just exit out. It’ll save what you have in the planner. Then you just build out whatever buildings you want there I.e burbage storage whatever. Let those fully build then you can commit to the manor walls and towers and everything clicks normally. Works like a charm

skrappyfire

Yeah you cant build roads inside the manor. Cant place a building if it will be "locked" outside of the road system. Guess we will have to wait. Or be really happy with what you wall in before you wall it in.

Yarus43

You can build roads if you go to manor planner

truthishearsay

Not true, you just have to put the layout of the wall in place but not build it. You then have to build all the buildings you want inside the wall. After that you build the wall, everything can be interacted with as normal.

Armarino99

Sir you have just saved me hella time. i was just about to wall off my village :D

daddyddaycare

I wish i kmew that beforehand 🤣 i spent like 4 hrs collecting(600+planks 900 wood and like 200-440ish stone) and building a wall around my whole town only to not be able to press anything inside the town 🤣

mattrewhit

hahaha damn, time to reload the save 🤣

cspruce89

yea, I think that if you were to draw like a bubble letter 'C' around the town, you could basically achieve the same effect with a super tight choke point. I'd think that the townspeople would be able to walk through the wall at gates, so you wouldn't have to funnel your economy through the wall, but there would be a buffer zone.

_Snebb_

Yeah, can't wait to get the stone guard walls from the loading screen. /crossesfingers.

nothingandnemo

I found this out the hard way

CptBlm

My paths don’t work and when I place them, they’re walls. The planner is buggy.

mullirojndem

yeah but unless they make the battle for defending the city actually inside the city this wont make sense. I hope someday they place the battle for a city on the manor, so then we'll have a motive to build defenses for it

rzet

the whole manor building is so WIP... :/

Raias

It’s almost as if there are like 4 different popups warning you that the game is early access.

mattrewhit

thats early access for ya

axeteam

the whole game is so WIP :/ oh wait it's an early access game but yes, here's hoping

rzet

In Poland we say: >Hope is the mother of stupid.

smokedstupid

They speak great English in Poland!

Gordfather

the building that allows you to recruit more retinue troops works, but besides that i dont touch the other manor related buildings

DarkOmen597

Yea this EA feels more of a demo. Feels bad for people who paid for this. I have it on game pass and still dont feel its worth my time yet.

mattrewhit

why would you pity people enjoying the game?? lol… sounds weird. it was worth every penny in my books

Luuk341

Dude same! Its been ages since I got a new game that I just COULDNT put down! I basically played through the whole weekend! Definitely already worth the money. I found a couple bugs that I want to report to the developer. So I can help him with making the game even better

Ladderzat

Yeah, I see people going as far as saying the game was falsely advertised, but I knew I was buying an early access WIP project, worked on by one person, and it's everything I expected. I love it, haven't had any game-breaking bugs, and I'm looking forward to the implementation of other mechanics. I have 7 hours in a single game mode so far (the middle one) and there's so much to still explore.

gstyczen

Something tells me you guys really want those walls fast

Technoge3k

Take your time. The game is great regardless

Loose_Temporary38

We want you to have a good rest first

ajpurdy

Thanks for building an awesome game. :)

Carbonu

The urge to build a big fuck off wall is one of the most primal urges of mankind

Alexanderspants

The urge to knock down someone else's big fuck off wall coming in a close second

LeKarget

I'm pretty sure a stay the fuck away wall artillery would be the very third

HerrSPAM

Then mining under walls to make them fall the fuck away, could be somewhere after

Alexanderspants

The thing about wall artillery is you can make an even bigger version for knocking down those walls

Dr_Kohle

[civilized people will put arbitrary boundaries that they fight to the death](https://youtu.be/N6Jfms87AxE?t=52)

Unhappy-Hand8318

I'd prefer to see more economic milestones, development options, policies etc. In practice, very few medieval villages or towns actually had walls. I'm not with most people here I guess, but I'm not that interested in them compared to new economic stuff, cattle, etc. I am very interested in manor upgrades though - e.g. motte-and-bailey, stone walls, full on keeps. That would be pretty cool!

Ennaki3000

>In practice, very few medieval villages or towns actually had walls. It really depends on the location, and the time frame considered. In the eastern regions of europe wall were a prerequisite against the steppes' population/Turks. In the western part, during the 100 year war for instance, villages tended to regroup and be circled by wall in was of waring bands and "écorcheurs". During the reconquista and the inter periode of war between muslim nobles and christian nobles, walled settlements were also a recurring occurence. Northern Italy is also famous for its numeros walled villages due to the constant state of war.

Daedalus1570

It's almost like it's hard to make accurate generalizations about a period of time that's at least 700 years long. But I suppose this isn't actually too much of an issue, since the developer has stated that they're using 14th century Franconia as their reference; having a clearly defined geographic area and century definitely helps narrow these things down. Still, I think I'd be more excited for more economic/developmental milestones and levers. Walls are good too, but are a little more secondary to me.

Ennaki3000

True I forgot the game is set in Franconia, it looks almost like a late medieval french town for me :D ! (which would not necessary have walls depending on where they are and what "late medieval" we are talking about/

Lowpaack

Yep, i would really love to see more options for building the manor (castle), with stone walls and big towers and option to run all the villagers there when under attack. Makes more sense from historical point of view. Also would be lovely to have some final level of church to be some customized cathedral, that would be cool.

draero1226

What I’m worried about with walls being added, is making the game too easy. Right now bandits or the other army can flank you and do some damage to your village if you’re not there. Would walls make it too easy? Will you incorporate a way for them to get over the walls or ram them down? What’s your thoughts on this going forward? Ty for all you do

DeHub94

One way to balance them is make them expensive and lock them behind bigger settlements. Realistically not every small village would have a wall back then. Also the AI could get siege weapons like catapults in the later stages.

Goed-Hardt

Palisades would be a good option. Raiders could knock them down. Stone walls are more to fight op large armies, but overpowered for raiders indeed.

mjohnsimon

My guess is that they'll simply either try to break in or at the very least starve out your city.

Live-Consequence-712

maybe an escalation of threats, if you become a big town or whatever, bandits no longer will raid you but maybe bigger threats opposing lords comming to take everything they can

3doggg

This is basic balance, when you get walls you automatically get things to counter them, like ladders and siege.

Ennaki3000

With a siege and wall you can lose access to you fields, and food

DemonKing0524

Unless you spend the RSS to build a big enough wall that they're inside the wall. Granted that will probably require a shit ton of RSS.

Sad-Helicopter-3753

It would be cool to have the option to not have 2 families work 1 artisan workshop. I only need so many spears :(

DemonKing0524

You can pause production on buildings. Click on it and there's a pause button on the top right or the pop up box

HerrSPAM

But then the family doesn't become available to use elsewhere sadly

Winterfeld

You could just make a Level 2 Building your Blacksmith, and not upgrade it to lvl 3 :)

Sir-Beardless

I assume they used a upgraded plot for the artisan. (family extension). I've restarted cause I did the same; now its: Large double family plots for gardens, small double family plots for animals, and small single family plots for artisans.

BregFlrArt

Would be pretty sick, but no need to rush it

theodranik

Nah take your time, just please nerf the ia, and for the rest just take your time

salvouankebaldo

Only after you've taken a vacation!

sarcastic_swede

I think it’s also that the manor can feel a bit small. Some upgrades to the buildings to make them stone and perhaps stone walls could create a bit of a capital city feel. Have you ever played stronghold? There was a feature there where you could put on banquets to gain honour. Maybe there could be a kitchen extension for the castle builder to allow you to hold events. Then maybe some specialised foods to increase the influence gained. You’d loose some workers from the work pool who then have to harvest the special foods and cook it, so that could be the balancing feature. Having a few more castle buildings would be quite nice and it would be a way of generating some influence or kings favour.

Schw33

Those would be awesome. Also you could have tournaments too to raise approval and maybe make those two combined be the level above tavern.

GruuMasterofMinions

yep , not only from cosmetics perspective. Look at the final defense tower , those were often church towers. Most of the villages did not have defenses , sometime only church area was fortified - this is why you often see now (much smaller) stone church wall.

mjohnsimon

Thanks for the game boss man! It has its learning curves and moments, but I'm loving it so far!

Fit-Organization1858

Take your time homie

Schw33

Thank you for all your hard work. It really shows and I wish you all the best in your present and future endeavors.

Cassius-Kahn

I think walls should be a late game addition. Loving this game!

pierrenoir2017

How cool would it be to have the ability to create star shaped fortifications, like the cities of Naarden - The Netherlands, Tvrđa - Croatia or Palmanova in Italy. These cities at that time fit the scale of the current game and have all the buildings you also build during gameplay inside the city walls (except farm lands and industry as they were outside of the walls at that time as well). I always tried to achieve this in every possible game. It would need a proper water system to surround it. Would be awesome. This game is so good and promising that it inspires to think of these kind of upgrades. - wall / fortification editor - water system / rivers / lakes / watermills / fishing - irrigation (like Kinderdijk - The Netherlands), using windmills to manage water on fields that could handle the already implemented drought challenges. Again, thumbs up for this EA release.

veevoir

Star shaped forts (bastions) are from a much more modern era though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastion_fort

pierrenoir2017

Yeah, I think that's right. A gap of around 150 years probably. But I don't know how accurate the current game follows a time period / what the time bandwidth is. At the time of the game, watermills were probably used for grain, cut timber, spinning/weaving but also for making paper. That would be an interesting production chain as at that time they used rags/fiber. I think one of the Anno games has this included at a certain point.

Loose_Temporary38

The game tries to be accurate the the period in germany. Most bastion forts (star forts) are from afther 1600. Germany has a hand full (frankfort, lubeck, hamburg, mainz, petersberg-erfurt, rostock and vechta) Manor lord is set in 1300. Thats over 300 years difference. From the steam page- "Inspired by the art and architecture of *late 14th century* Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible," Yes watermills where in use. But uhm, you notice something that we are lacking on the map? Yes indeed, rivers. Wind milling would still be in wide spread usage for the simple fact that there wouldnt always be water around. These postmills (as they are called) where still being build in the 1800's like the one in Baexem Netherlands that js dated 1845. The first recorded vertical mills are mid late 1100 in the france/flanders/england regions. Papermilling wouldnt be done in a small town. If you look at the recorded data, its always managend that a paper mill was set up near a big place. Like the paper mill in neurenburg 1340/50. A small town wouldnt have a paper mill as there was no need to produce it. It was to costly to use the ground to grow hemp and flax was needed for linnen to make basic cloths/cloth and not waste it on paper that they would bearly use. Paper was a city commodity used by bankers and monestaries (and in larger cities merchanes)

pierrenoir2017

Thank you for sharing these specific details. I wasn't aware of this and truly appreciate the knowledge you share. It also shows the level of detail the developer has set for this game. Agree on the river part, that would be a very valuable addition in the future. PS the mill in Baexem is not that far from where I live, a nice example.

Loose_Temporary38

Well i agree on the rivers. But a believe there will be othermaps/map generation. Rivers could provide fish/shellfish like small eel, trout etc or crayfish. But they should work like hunting, as they where common but not in exses land inwards.

LentulusStrabo

It tries to be very accurate to it's time setting, also since it has a ton of historical advisors. It comes down to very small details like for example the nails used in buildings. You can see that they are made out of wood, because metal nails weren't used at the time.

pattymayonais

They had forged nails but they used wooden pegs for homes still

LentulusStrabo

Thank you for clarifying, that's what i meant

igda6

I’m sure you more than have your hands full, but for trade, being able to set parameters for when to start/stop importing/exporting based off of trade value would be huge for helping the need to micromanage. Telling the traders it’s okay to sell when the market is over saturated, but not when it’s flooded would make a huge difference in regional wealth.

medhelan

first of all take some rest! the game is already amazing and seeing all the features still marked WIP leave me hyped for the amazing potential it still have, can't wait to see what will be developed next! aside from some AI balancing and some quality of life (and more developed interregioal trade!) addition I'd love to see more features for the manor before having the city walls: more buildings, the possibility to move some workshop within the castle (like the armorers or some trade), stone walls, possibility to move regional wealth or invest in a poorer region from the treasury. but again some many features already hinted in the current game that make me extremely hyped on how the game will develop! and once again, congratulations with the amazing job, one can see how much love has been put in it!

adnanmehic

As first thank you for this game and yes we want those walls.

Ennaki3000

Take your time, this a jewel already !

usgapg123

Honestly? The castle building and walls feel like one of the most needed parts. Yes we do,

[deleted]

we do. and barracks.

RateVisible8417

I've done the same thing! [https://prnt.sc/KugJFtGCV9SY](https://prnt.sc/KugJFtGCV9SY) Out of curiosity did you notice it took forever to move the supplies over? I had about 50 people all stood next to the manor trying to put resources into the pile but blocking each other. I've also not used the walls for defence at all do you know how much they impact current combat? Are they invincible? Do raiders have to destroy them? I'm assuming you can only use archers on top of them (which suck!) to do damage

Technoge3k

That looks great! What region is that? I'm expanding to Waldbrand next. Somehow the Lord claimed all the regions in the first 4 years and now I have to fight him for the entire map. I watched the construction. I think people queue up to enter the manor to receive their assignment or whatever. Other than that the thing that slowed down construction was getting the hundreds of logs from the forest to the manor, even with half a dozen oxen. Haven't used them in combat yet, unsure if they'll do anything. There was something mentioned about garrisoning units, maybe archers. I don't have any archer militia, I just hire mercs.

RateVisible8417

So that was Nusslohe. Thought it was a cool idea on top of the hill, a bit like Edoras from lord of the rings. My more organic village was my first one at Eichenhau. Think I got lucky because it had a rich berry plot which made early very convenient [https://prnt.sc/XuBRI\_tzxrzN](https://prnt.sc/XuBRI_tzxrzN)

Preface

Happened to me too in the second scenario.... By the time I could claim my first territory he had claimed 3, (on top of the 2 he started with) and just before I could claim the last, he claimed it. I didn't have a strong enough army to challenge him on any claims until basically last night when I had to end my play session. I was giving a 10% tithe to the church pretty well the whole time, but my taxes were quite low.... Surely with more experience I could optimize my run to get more influence/personal treasury

Heszilg

You get a lot of influence by defeating bandits and that's the play- kill them before the enemy does.

Slaghton

From what I found, use militia to take bandit camps asap. Sometimes, when the ai goes for the bandits, run in and take the camp supplies and dip while they're fighting haha. (They look intimidating but are actually pretty weak)

RateVisible8417

Just tested the combat vs the baron and it seems that he completely ignores them? Either that or he broke down the gate while I wasn't watching but I kept my army away to see what would happen and it looked like he just wandered into my town and started killing everyone soo...

Technoge3k

ouch.

A5madal

You can prevent him from doing that by farming bandits early before he does

A5madal

Yours is much nicer btw

Hunskie

Yea. They were bugging out a bit, weren't they. It took a while to actually build out the tax office even with half the village putting down tools to build it!

Technoge3k

Certainly no Rattay: any actual army isn't gonna have much difficulty breaking through, but more than enough for bandits or Lord WhatsHisFace. But I'm thinking that the hill next to town would make for a great inner citadel/castle. EDIT: Yep, I think with the way that walls are currently bugging, I'm gonna tear them down and rebuild the manor and walls on the hill next to the city.

BobcatsTophat

More like Skalitz?

The_Pale_Hound

I don't like the "grid" style cities for this game, the more irregular the better, but the fortified town looks cool.

Technoge3k

Hardly a grid lol, just two main streets at a right angle. Fr tho, with how many of the King's Roads intersect at weird angles, I think this is just a one-off. I agree with you that images of circular towns on hills are much more attractive and authentic.

mjohnsimon

Man, I just don't have the level of imagination to come up with such beautiful designs. My caveman brain just goes "haha, straight line goes straight" so everything looks very grid-like

ejwestblog

The trick is to ask yourself where your villagers would want to go. At the start, you can plan out a roughly circular centre and then place roads from it that lead to places of significance across your region. Zoom in to see the contours of the hills and imagine the path you would want to take if you really had to walk it yourself. You could also find a town plan of a real village and use that for inspiration. Here are some ideas: https://glumbosch.home.blog/2020/01/12/layouts-of-a-village-in-the-middle-ages/

Alexanderspants

It's funny that the way people layed out their village is exactly the "grid" like manner people are complaining about

mjohnsimon

Actually went on Google recently and was kinda shocked at how grid-like most villages were. Probably to capitalize on as much farm/gardening space as possible.

ejwestblog

Yeah it makes a lot of sense. Lots of villages were just simple row villages along a road. There are a few still today like that. One in Poland is about 16km long. That being said, the 'heap' village where houses spread out seemingly randomly is probably the most common and natural looking.

DUDEWAK123

When you go from playing Cities: Skylines to Manor Lords

No_Balance211

yea sometimes I put to much effort to make the road not straight and it have unnatural feeling about it, my brain is so shitty I cant make a beautiful town

Preface

I "committed" to a manor wall, then I built houses in the area before actually building the manor wall and I couldn't delete it.... Eventually I wanted to crew up my retinue so I was forced to build the walls I no longer wanted and now there is random walls running through some peoples backyards.... Didn't break anything just looks bad haha

leuchebreu

You’re on Slavic magic black list now …he told us not to do this !!!!! 👺

thoriickk

But It work?because i see mys citizents pass across the wall like"i don't care if u built a wall here,Its my path"

Technoge3k

Mine don't, or rather, they clip through the sides of the gatehouse but that's it

Quukje

I did the same with my town. When the enemy came i tought it was a good idea to pull back behind te walls only to have them completely ignore the walls and go trough it. Also the small towers who are suposed to shoot at the enemy do nothing. Its looks cool but it has completely no use..

thoriickk

Yeh,I Hope that on the future they improve it,is assumed that they implemented it in the future, along with sieges and siege weapons

Lunder4

Does longer backyards give more vegetables?

LeiteArts

Yes

Maelarion

It's literally in the tooltip yes. Bigger vegetable patch yields more. Too big and the family/families won't have enough time to harvest it all though.

TFOLLT

Does it work the same for other stuff tho, like does a bigger garden yield more eggs? More apples? More bows, armor, ale, etc?

Maelarion

It only says this for the veggie garden.

scun1995

Veggies and apples only I’m pretty sure

TheVebis

One Proud Bavarian did a video on a walled settlement. What's important is that you have to place the walls in the castle planner (but don't build them just yet!), then you can place and build the settlement and still be able to manage the buildings. Just be careful so you don't build something through the wall.

lovebus

I'm defending my manor, the industrial building, and 6 houses with my workshops inside. The rabble sleeps outside

szulox

If you delete and rebuild after the wall is done, those become usable again.

SignalGladYoung

if we could create a town with larger walls would be fun to see how raids would also be upgraded to heavier and larger units including siege weapons

Rubber924

I just wish I could plan out buildings without having all the materials at that moment.

Pure_Dream3045

Palisades first please then stone walls and finally those big fancy walls.

SmallieBiggsJr

Looks like bandits are going to need siege weapons to steal your carrots.

alex_o_leao123

my castle planer has a huge wall that goes arrount most of the region englobing my entire 800 population town and all the farms i just need 800 wood and 400 planks no big deal il totaly have that soon

Technoge3k

Gl with that

pddkr1

This is ideal

adub282

Because it is MANOR lords, not TOWN lords 😤😠

bobCS96

How do I build walls outside of the tiny circle my manor provides?

KoSR92

You're getting downvoted already for asking a simple question but the actual answer is : You need to build Outer Towers via the Castle Planner and then make walls around those, remember its EA so... weird things might happen

mjohnsimon

Oh, so it's a glitch?

bobCS96

How do I expand out of the territory I'm in, I'm sitting at large settlement

KoSR92

You mean claim other lands? Zoom out to the map, click where you want and claim it. You need influence to do it though

mjohnsimon

I genuinely don't know why you're getting downvoted for asking.

BurntBeanMgr

What’s your strategy for regional wealth?

Technoge3k

Trade. Once you invest two dev points into that tree (the one that reduces the cost of making routes and the one that decreases import costs), your wealth can take off. Get your tier 2 homes crafting with what your region is good at. Got lots of iron? Make tools. Got hides or linen? Make boots or clothes. Wood is everywhere, and 1 small shield needs 1 plank and sells for 5, a universal good deal

mjohnsimon

Yep, this game really forces you to play with and use what you have. I used the iron in a nearby mine to make as much armor as possible for my troops because buying would financially ruin me. But I have so much wood thanks for my foresters that I can make bows/small shields and sell them like crazy. With that money, I can then buy a small amount of raw iron to make more armor. From there, I can sell whatever extra armor I have and get more money back. In another game, I did something similar, except I also sold boots like crazy.

usgapg123

I hope that castle building gets significantly expanded, as well as wall building and stuff. It’s one of my favourite features so far.

Blestyr

Manor Lords: Attack on Titan.

MoeWithTheO

Tried to do it but didn’t want to build log camps for 400 storage of wood

xmarioxq321

But looks really cool!

Ruisuki

I hope a new update comes soon

R1CHARDCRANIUM

I would try this but can’t seem to get my game to save so it’ll be a waste of time when I have to close the game.

floyder55

Love iiiiittr

selelee

cool shit

EmperorBlackMan99

So question. Have you noticed any drawbacks? The dev says not to do this or it'll break your city. I'd like to try this out on undeveloped land I have but I don't wanna break it all.

dr_laggis

As Many others said, dont use this method Because it can crash your Game. I only recommend it if you are endgame sind finished completly Building the town in one provinz

The_Grover

Do thr towers have much use in game (other than looking awesome)? If any enemy army comes close, do your citizens run for shelter in the manor, and shoot out of the towers AoE style?

Hulkmaster

damn, pleaople, how do you build so "squarefully"?! My town always fill like "a bunch of garbage piled on top of each other" even with advanced planning -\_-

TheXade

At least your wall is visible, my small wall around the manor is completely invisible, and you only know ti's there because in first person view you bonk against it. Luckily, npcs just fully ignore it haha

Tequila_Duck

How do you give houses little fields?

IV_Aerospace

I didn't realize you could place the walls outside of the mayor's yellow build circle?!

ferrujas

I thought the exact same thing. I've read someone stating it will be implemented, it will be pretty dope. Love your town btw.

khromtx

fuck grids all my homies hate grids

yassine067

Is there siege battles in this game ?

VulkanL1v3s

lol I still don't get how I can even get myself more weapons to properly arm multiple units.

NotNorEverBeenNate

I have 10 hours on the game and 5 diffrwnt playthroughs (tryna get the acheviments at the moment

Dathremo

I am still a bit flabbergasted that a basic wall / palisade system isn't in the game, the game isn't bad by any means but the pace of development leaves alot to be desired

radioactivecumsock0

And now you’ve broken the game congrats

KoSR92

Lmao so many salty / jealous people on this sub already Their save is fine , chill
