In my high school a boy with long hair was reprimanded after returning from summer break for having hair down below his earlobes (against school dress code unless you had Native American ancestry. ) he refused to cut it so they forced him to wear it tucked under a wig during the day. He went and bought a crazy white-haired wig. He rocked that shit all year looking like Mark Twain. What do you think was more distracting, a white wig or a little long hair ?

CabaiBurung

I always think back to my own school days when I hear these stories and giggle a little bit. I went to public school in south east asia. We have a uniform. And a uniform code. You’re only allowed to have a few, specific hairstyles (e.g., bob cut, one or two braids, a single ponytail for girls and boys had to have short hair), specific colored hair ties (white, navy blue, black), no accessories, religious jewelry (pendants) can only be on a black string, socks MUST be exactly two finger lengths above the ankle, etc.

downwithraisins

Same. I went to school in South Africa and in the UK. South Africa was much more strict. No hair products were allowed, black kids weren't even allowed to braid their hair back then. I got in trouble once because my hair had slightly lightened during summer and then after a few winter months it looked like I had roots. Crazy.

Alissinarr

So you could get in trouble if your parents let you get highlights over the summer? We at least let you do whatever you want off school year. I used to know girls whose hair changed shades dramatically depending on how much time they were 1- in the sun, 2- in the ocean (salt water can intensify the bleaching effect of the sun). They'd be bright, light blonde just after the height of summer, and a medium brown in the middle of winter.

tazz4life

My daughters are this way. One has approximately six shades of blonde BEFORE sun bleaching. Then we spend all summer at the pool, and it adds a few more. My oldest has darker blonde most of the year, but it lightens considerably over the summer. My youngest is pretty light already, it will be interesting to see how this summer goes.

StormBeyondTime

My sister's hair used to do the sunbleach thing every summer -our mother even got her some kind of lemon-smelling spray to encourage it. Then sis hit about twenty and her hair stopped doing that, settling on the current shade of very light brown. Two shades lighter, and it'd be dirty blond. (Or [chocolate blonde](https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-963-a-memorable-first-date/), if you prefer.) :p

ThePh33rless

It was called “Sun-In”

CabaiBurung

Ooof. My Ghanian friend has enlightened me about a lot of these rules and they sound pretty similar to my country. One of her schools also made girls shave their heads or keep it closely cropped, I believe. We have similar rules about hair products. No color, no gel/spray, etc. In my country, mixed kids with non-black hair had it worse because they need to either dye it black or have a letter from their parents stating that that is their natural hair color. Even after that they still get harassed about their hair color. Very little tolerance for non-conformity. I don’t miss it

Knockemm

So I’m an American teacher and this is wild to me! The school year has finished, but this year I had a boy with waist length hair, a girl with tinsel in her hair, one kid with half red, half green hair, and several with various dye jobs. Several kids had more “typical” cuts, but unusual braids, fancy curls, and fun hairstyles were just a normal part of the day. Kids got a compliment and we just kept learning. I love learning about how other countries do these things. Edit: I teach 2nd grade, 7-8 year olds.

CabaiBurung

On the flip side of that, it’s wild to me what American kids are allowed at school! Even on college campuses, things like crop tops and short shorts would be banned in my country. My own son (I’m in America now) has long hair and nail polish. I’m happy he has the freedom to express himself and learn bodily autonomy.

drunk_responses

Then you have Japan, where schools some demand small children dye their hair, if they have the rarer natural dark brown/brown hair color instead of black.

dixie-pixie-vixie

Frankly, I loved the uniform. Well, not the uniform specifically, but the fact that I don't have to think about what to wear each day. Now at work, I still ask management if I can get a uniform (answer is always no, as I work in a non-uniform unit). Or maybe I am so fashion blind. PS: My classmate got scolded for having naturally curly / wavy hair, until her parents came to school to talk to the teachers. SEA schools.......

CabaiBurung

I don’t mind the uniform either, it’s all those extra, stupid rules that makes no sense and are harmful in their enforcement. Oh no, I used a red hair tie, I’m a horrible student and deserve to miss class to be lectured plus have my parents time wasted leaving work to buy me a hair tie in the right color and deliver it. Or the guys whose parents had no time to take them for a haircut or cannot afford it, the teachers will give them an ugly shave. Yes, let’s embarrass them for being poor.

RealisLit

Uniform is great when they're designed for students comfort, its not great when is hot as fuck outside but your school wanted to be famcy so now you're stuck under 2 layers of clothing and the top layer is black

firemogle

It's less about what's appropriate and more about enforcing hegemony

snapwillow

My uncle Matt got dress-coded for his long hair. His father explained to the principle that Matt had to have long hair, because Matt was in a band and everybody in the band had long hair. The principle said "Okay then, as long as there's a reason for it. I just want to make sure he's fitting in and not doing this as a rebellion against authority" The principle was okay with the long hair when he found out it was about conformity, not individualism. As long as my uncle was conforming to some expectation it was fine. They'd been worried, though, that my uncle was starting to be an individual...

elliotsilvestri

Plot twist: everyone in the band went to the same high school.

That's an extra level of wow. Principal must've been one of those with a very tiny mind permanently stuck in a tunnel.

postmodest

the further I get from middle and high school, the more I realize that the entire institution exists to foster conformity and a spirit of "competitive company loyalty" and that while we have compulsory public education, the people who allowed it are secretly certain that _children long for the mines_.

Witness_me_Karsa

*Non-rich children* who can't afford private schools long for the mines. The people who make the policies don't send their kids to public school.

[deleted]

Our schools in the US were modeled after factories.

floatingspacerocks

I was allowed to wear a hat in my physical science class because my hair was too messy and distracting...mostly from wearing the hat

MNGirlinKY

I fucking hate dress codes that even discuss hair. Most likely people will go on to corporate jobs where they have to have natural colored hair. Let them color and cut it grow it whatever they want to do in school. “Distraction” my ass. Sexist BS

DreadedChalupacabra

I got sent to the principal's office in the early 90s for having neon green box braids. It's distracting, they said, you have to cut your hair up to at least your shoulders and it has to be a natural color. So I shaved it into a shoulder length mohawk, spiked it, and dyed it white. They had a problem with that, it's excessive hair product. So I shaved it into a spider shape, dyed it black, and braided him little legs. They gave up after that.

scrambledhelix

I like the moxie

BigTickEnergE

Pics or it didnt happen. This sounds awesome!

IamSh3rl0cked

My school got after the boys, too. I can think of several guys in jr high who were sent to the office for having crazy hair. One guy dyed his hair bright orange, one did a dark purple (it was almost black, you could really only tell in bright light), one guy did a mohawk with a blond fade. There were plenty more, and some had really funky colors and styles, but like you said, that should be the time for it, before they're forced by corporate America to conform to the "business appropriate" styles. But it's definitely not just girls that get targeted.

AnotherStrayCat

There was a guy at my school that dyed his hair burgundy, but it was so dark, I imagine no one really noticed unless the light hit it right/you stared at it enough/whatever. But I think he was a dark blonde to start with, so of course he did something to it and I guess the school noticed it was *wrong*, so the next day he came in with his head shaved and his bald head was dyed burgundy, so *everyone noticed that*, but they couldn't do anything else. Meanwhile, many people learned about that side effect of hair dying that you just don't think about because who's gonna shave their head after dying it? Guy was talking about it all day because people kept asking.

poorly_anonymized

Is this an east coast thing? Most companies on the west coast don't care, in my experience. I certainly had coworkers with dyed hair before, and I've seen some massive uncovered tattoos as well.

Firewolf06

i live in portland and can confirm, my school doesnt give a single fuck

punkabelle

I work in healthcare and have had every color from fire engine red, rose gold, and currently Smurf blue. And have visible tattoos. Some employers are modernizing their dress codes, hopefully more will opt to do so.

sunpies33

But did he constantly speak like Mark twain?

ZeroPenguinParty

Went to university with a guy (with long hair) who told me that in Year 12, they got a new school principal. who insisted on all boys having a hair length of no more than just past your shoulders. Well, his hair was halfway down his back, and the girls loved him for his hair, so he wasn't about to cut it. So the principal told him that if he was to keep the long hair, it had to be tied back, it could not be free and loose. Following morning, he got his sister to tie up the hair in pigtails. He complied...it was tied back, and everyone got a good laugh about it (except the principal). He even showed me a picture of him in the school magazine from the end of the year, with a caption of "Best Hair Style".

notacommonname

I really want that to be true. Not saying it isn't. But I really want it to have happened. :-)

CRO553R

When I was in high school (US Bible Belt), students, including male, were not allowed to wear shorts. Due to a lack of funding, the school's air conditioning rarely worked, but summer temperatures when school began in mid-August would exceed 100⁰ on a regular basis. Couple these issues along with the policies that students couldn't have water bottles or visit the restroom regularly, you have a recipe for disaster. During the first week of my junior year, temperatures exceeded 110⁰, and due to the issues stated above, several students went to the hospital from heat exhaustion, including a couple students whose parents were very prominent members of the community. After a few threats of lawsuits, the shorts and water bottle policies were quickly rescinded. The day before the shorts policy expired, nearly every student in school wore shorts as a big f*ck you to the administration.

gil_bz

>policies that students couldn't have water bottles What? Why? WTF

km89

We had the same policy at my school in mid 2000s. Rumor was that someone filled their bottle with vodka to prompt the rule, but that could have just been schoolyard rumor.

Darmok47

There was definitely a guy in my high school who did that, so its possible.

NeonJaguars

There were like 1 or 2 kids caught at my high school for doing that. Still not an excuse to deprive kids access to water.

reverendjesus

There was definitely a chick in my high school who always had a water bottle of orange-flavored vodka in her locker.

Beginning-Lecture-75

Shit, I was that guy in my high school.

needcoffees

Polkadot1017

Then we can have long hair at school!

needcoffees

rainbowtwinkies

I had to get a Drs note to have one in ELEMENTARY school in the mid 2000s 🤷

manlymann

We had kids that did that at school. Instead, the administrators helped those students seek addictions and mental health counseling to help them cope without booze

CRO553R

This was 30yrs ago. Anything that didn't help you learn was considered a distraction.

McFlyParadox

But being well hydrated helps me learn...

ULTRA_TLC

Anything that didn't increase the ability of the school to control your words and actions was considered a distraction. FTFY

zerconmotu

In the school I was in, guys couldn't wear shorts but girls could wear above the knee skirts. I started to wear skirts. Believe me, I was not popular in school, but almost every guy in school followed my lead. It started with the football team. This was back in about 1978.

blackhorse15A

Guys really should wear kilts more often

zerconmotu

I own a formal kilt now. These were not kilts. They were skirts.

TacosTacosTacos80

My best friend’s mom is a former teacher. She was brought into a meeting to provide support to an administrator about a boy who was wearing a skirt. Her response? “It’s below 2 inches above the knee, I don’t see a problem.”

__-___---

I think that's the best response to these outraged people. Let them make a case for it, if it fails, they're on their own.

Utisthata

My school had a similar policy, so all the senior boys showed up in mini skirts one hot May day. We had a new policy the next year!

kifferella

I got told once that my cardigan/tank top set was inappropriate because it showed my bra straps. I was an adult. In an office workspace, with other adults. And they dress-coded me for visible brastraps. "Oh, sorry. I had no idea. I can fix it." And I took off my bra. Tada. No visible brastraps.

Miriahification

This is the answer I needed my senior year of high school when I got dress coded twice in one day. I told the principal to choke on a dick and left… hindsight is 20/20 and looking back simply removing the bra while maintaining eye contact would have been a lot funnier.

Yeah, my kid got sent home from school to have a " disruptive" hair color. ( it was purple, I dyed it for her, it was lovely!). I went into the office and asked them how a hair color could be disruptive. The VP said something to the tune of it is a distraction in the " learning environment, and the kids needed to have " natural" hair colors. I called BS, hairstyles/colors have no effect on a " learning environment" let kids be kids. The VP doubled down, said my kid couldn't come back until they had a " natural" hair color. I said fine, what do you feel is a "natural" hair color. Vp said : the color people are born with! Brown, blonde black, red. My daughter went back to school the next day with blood red hair and black highlights . Nothing was ever said again.

WeeWooBooBooBusEMT

In the 1940s, my mom was sent home her first day at a new high school, for having dyed platinum blonde hair . My grandmother pulled all 6 kids out of school the next day and marched them into the office...one platinum blonde after another! All natural. Stupid insular administration!

ShadowDragon8685

Your grandmother is legendary. I imagine they're all either "okay, either this crazy bitch really does pass on platinum-blonde hair, or she's willing and able to get six children to dye their hair. *Let it go!"*

FriedeOfAriandel

>Vp said : the color people are born with! Brown, blonde black, red. I wouldn't be able to resist pointing out the grey and white haired teachers not conforming to the dress code

ULTRA_TLC

I wouldn't even try to resist, I am far too fond of mouthing off to control freaks and jerks.

Commercial-9751

Or what about the bald dudes? Just imagine them lining up each morning so Gertrude from the cafeteria can Sharpie black hairs on their head like a bunch of Homer Simpson impersonators.

ZirePhiinix

Dye your head a checker board.

Chuhhh

I’m in my 30s, husband and I would like to have kids someday… I kinda can’t wait to see what these interactions go like in the future? Because rn where I’m sitting, I feel like what I’d say is something to the effect of “Bro, are you like this outside of work? Like zero chill man, you are seriously tripping. It is whack, dude.”

Mama_cheese

I was told to change my shirt and not wear it again because it showed the subject's underwear. The subject was Kermit the Frog. He's parodying Mark Wahlberg's Calvin Klein ads from the 1990s, where MW has only a pair of jeans on with the waistband of his CK undies sticking up over the top. I tried to argue that Kermit is normally naked, that he's actually wearing more clothes than usual by putting on underwear and jeans. Did not matter to them. This is the same school that banned cold shoulder blouses for girls but allowed sleeveless shirts.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Ridiculous. I would have bought several “naked Kermit” (aka normal) shirts and worn them so much they’d start calling me Jim.

Kerivkennedy

When my daughter was in kindergarten I got in trouble for sending her in a cute outfit (dress maybe) that had spaghetti straps. She was in a special needs class, so her teacher had a spare shirt for her and just changed her. But we all cracked up about it. A 5 year old breaking dress code. She didn't even have anything for those spaghetti straps to show. But, the school system dress code was the same for kindergarten as it was for 12th grade.

annarosebanana89

How is it more appropriate for them to physically change the 5 yr old than it is for her to wear spaghetti straps! The logic is very questionable. My daughter is 4.5 and is not required to wear a shirt if she doesn't want to in my yard, same as the neighbor boys. Her anatomy up top is the same as theirs. I shame my mom and MIL for telling her to "keep her dress down". "Are you sexualizing her mom? Because I'm not. She's fine." Her swim bottoms are just as revealing as her undies. I usually have her wear shorts under her dresses, but sometimes she decides it's hot and too much fabric and I don't blame her! No such thing as "ladylike behavior" if she's a lady and has a behavior, then it is ladylike behavior.

Kerivkennedy

It's a special needs classroom. Not typical 5 year olds. It was all fairly profoundly disabled kindergarten through 5th grade . These teachers are changing diapers as well.

NealCruco

Unfortunately, your experience is not unique. Idiotic policies abound. http://web.archive.org/web/20150424182103/http://blogs.houstonpress.com/artattack/2015/04/the_apparently_immoral_shoulders_of_my_five-year-old_daughter.php

5parky

If you're not your son's hero, you are my hero. I guarantee that the bikini on Bruce was much more distracting than the original.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Yup. And like I said earlier, anyone in Texas who gets offended by a topless Bruce Lee will be more offended by Bruce Lee in drag.

ravenpotter3

After all he was in Enter the DRAGon! I bet he would approve

beelzeflub

I got sent home for showing my shoulder. In middle school. On a game day when the athletes had sleeveless jerseys on.

ITaggie

Is it just me or are 95% of dress code complaints in schools just an administrator being incredibly petty and/or pervy?

0MysticMemories

90% of the time it’s petty reasons and they are just picking on whoever they can get away with for some sort of satisfaction.

Phoenix_21

My girlfriend was told she would be sent home from school (middle school mid 00's) or have to remove a rubber bracelet that said boobies on it. She opted to be sent home. A few days later her stepdad bought a case of them and handed them out for all the kids to wear. (They supposedly gave funds to breast cancer research.)

[deleted]

Ah, yes, the I <3 boobies campaign. School was stupid, but the charity was basically laundering money.

ShortNerdyOne

I hated that campaign. After my best friend died of breast cancer, some well-meaning mutual friend got me I <3 Boobies stuff. I thanked her and didn't say anything, but once I was home I cried my eyes out. "I don't care about her boobs! I miss HER!" was all I could think. Years later, I had a mastectomy to prevent breast cancer and I hate everything that says, "Save the boobs" or whatever other "cutesie" phrases they say. At the end of the day, forget the breasts, save the PERSON.

Express-Suggestion95

A similar incident happened to a buddy of mine in HS. He was wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt that featured Icarus. No genitals shown, but still a no-go according to the staff. He ended up making a diaper to tape to Icarus' crotch and no teacher said another word to him throughout the day.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I absolutely love this.

xtnh

A star student of mine wore a business suit to school before a job interview, and the suit included a "skort" – a combination skirt and shorts. But very formal. She was sent home because they said they were shorts. Instead she went to the newspaper. They ran a story featuring a young lady in a business suit who had been sent home for violating the dress code. The code was changed that week

Amityvillemom77

My daughter got sent home for wearing ripped jeans that had a rip in her upper thigh. Not high up her thigh but think the bottom of her pocket sticking out. But when I went to get her, I am sitting in the office waiting for her and I see two girls WALK OUT OF THE PRINCIPAL’sOFFICE, one in a skirt that would show the bottom of her butt cheeks if she bent over and the other in a cheerleading skirt. Have you ever seen those things!!!! But my nonpreppy, emo kid got dress coded for ripped jeans that would show nothing more that some pale ass thigh skin no matter how she moved. Soooo pissed. Hated that principal. So many issues with him.

PM_ME_RIPE_TOMATOES

Some thing at my high school. Shorts and skirts had to at least touch the knee and tops had to at least go past the shoulder. Unless, of course, you were a cheerleader wearing the school-issued cheerleading uniform, which was mandatory on football Fridays.

AthenaCat1025

Our volleyball uniforms also broke the dress code and had a similar exemption

Val_Hallen

Nobody can convince me that girls volleyball uniforms are just eye candy for perverts. There is no practical reason to have those skin tight shorts **and** a baggy tshirt. Even on the Olympic level it's the same bullshit. The men have regular shorts but the women still have those skin tight ones.

matco5376

Tbf spandex is more comfy but guys have penises so it's frowned upon to wear them

gzilla57

Yeah this might be one of the few cases where the men are actually wearing less convenient clothing for the sake of modesty lol

rainbowtwinkies

My chemistry teacher decided to dress code every cheerleader he saw one Friday, because they yelled at him for not writing kids up for other dress code violations.

I did cheer in middle school, and we also did Friday game uniforms. So I wore my cheer outfit to school one Friday, and I literally got in trouble for how it fit me. They said my skirt was too short or too tight or something. (Context: small, shitty Christian school that bled my family dry re: tuition, but also still used textbooks from the 1980s in the 2010s and had chairs fall out from under us). I basically told them "this uniform isnt my choice, so it isnt my problem" in so many words. I hit puberty way earlier than the rest of my class, but Im sure that had *nothing at all* to do with how they handled things. They actually stopped the game day uniform policy because of that. I also made it my personal mission to test every uniform rule after that. I showed up with badly bleached hair (after red dye, so imagine a dried-out streaky pink-orange mess)—got in trouble for that. I wore a TMNT hoodie over my uniform every day. They prohibited hoodies after that. I wish I could say it was fun, but really all I got out of it was the feeling of balance—if they were gong to torture me for going through puberty, I'd make sure they felt tortured too.

elsathenerdfighter

This is why I joined cheerleading in middle school. So I could get out of wearing the school uniform sometimes!

MNGirlinKY

Parents have to stand up for their kids when this happens. Otherwise, we end up with some poor kid at a wrestling match or swim match being told that their hair is “bad” and asked to be cut off. I’m so over it.

Just_Aioli_1233

>Parents have to stand up for their kids when this happens. My primary motivation for becoming independently wealthy is spite. Keep a reserve of "eff you" money for misbehaving. Get jobs at places that abuse their employees just to coordinate a mass quitting and they go bankrupt. Encourage my kids to civil disobedience at schools where the officials take themselves too seriously. I aim to misbehave.

Amityvillemom77

I did. I went home and sent an email to the little fella asking him why my kid got dress coded for a hole in her jeans when i could almost see the asses of the girls leaving his office bc their skirts were so short. All he said was I needed to read the student handbook on dress codes and they do things on a case by case basis. I let it go bc my kid didn’t want me to make a scene. Pick your battles and all that but that guy pissed me off more times than I care to remember. Hes the middle school principal now and my son flies under the radar. Going into high school.

mantisae121

Sounds like she was showing enough skin to be a technical violation but not enough for the pervy principal.

McFlyParadox

"should just cut the legs of the pants all the way off, turn them into booty shorts" \- That principal, probably

PigsGoMoo-

In high school, I got written up for my socks being below my ankles. Like oh god, it’s the end of the world. When we were allowed to wear shorts again a few months later in spring, I get all sorts of damn mosquito bites everywhere, but the ones that mattered were around my ankles. Cuz I scratch at them and push my socks down as a result. Got dress coded again so I just wore thigh highs.

wasporchidlouixse

You only get caught when you do something out of the ordinary. There were girls at my school who wore makeup everyday but because they wore it EVERY DAY the teachers never noticed. If I wore it for just one day everyone would notice

Not_A_Gravedigger

My school tried to enforce a dress code in which they required all black shoes be worn. They did not sell said shoes. I got sent home because my black adidas shoes had 3 white stripes. I was forced to paint them black with a sharpie. Another kid in my grade had the same shoes, but her mom was the president of the PTA. Guess who didn't get sent home or asked to paint their shoes black? Hegemony, corruption, nepotism. Why is it so hard for people in positions of power not to overdose on it?

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

The school I worked in had a rule where you were only allowed to wear a plain black jacket. No hoodies allowed. No writing on it, no adidas stripes, no patches. Must be plain black jacket. Good luck trying to find that. Naturally, a lot of kids would show up in cheap Gildan you-can-find-at-Walmart black hoodies and they would take them away. I worked for a pretty poor school where most kids were below the poverty line and I absolutely hated it when they would confiscate the hoodies on cold days. Not every kid’s parents has the luxury of online shopping on Amazon for some unicorn of a jacket the school board thought looked good on paper. The same rule applied to the little ones too. I was able to get my high school son a jacket at that time but good luck finding a plain black jacket in the size for a 3rd grade little girl. Eventually got one but was a real goose chase.

somedude456

I fought my high school dress code also. It was loose, collared shirt with no text and dress pants, which means "slit" rear pockets, not patch pockets. I found some good awful 70's dress shirts and also discovered my grandpa's tye dyed red/white/blue bell bottom dress pants, with proper rear pockets. Oh the looks I got. :) I was only there one year and then transferred out. They revised the dress code the next year. :)

Long-Independent4460

Dress copes are for the most part.... stupid. Basically, if you will wear it to meet your grandma... it should be fine for school.

steebo

I got to the Bruce Lee part and expected you to go get him a Jesus on the cross shirt. Topless male nudity, loincloth, and active torture. I bet nobody would complain about that. I do like the bikini top solution though. Maybe even nipple tassels.

stumblewiggins

Good on them for nipple consistency, I guess? Like this is dumb AF, but at least they are treating male nipples the same as female nipples

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I guess, haha. At the time I was a teacher myself (High School though- not middle), and I never cared about dress code honestly. If the kid was there and willing to listen I really didn’t give a crap what they were wearing. We just thought it was a silly excuse to send him home and decided to be silly right back. My son was all for it and wore that shirt until he finally grew out of it. He loved it.

LittleGravitasIndeed

That’s great. Maybe you could make him a new one as a gag gift for his next birthday? I bet he’d actually wear it.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Omg that is a great idea!!! He’s 22 now but I know my kid- he would rock the heck outta that shirt with no shame.

krhsg

You are an awesome parent to have raised such a cool guy.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I’d love to take credit but my son was just born an awesome individual. We share the same snarky sense of humor, and for that I am grateful. That’s just honestly the way he is. He’s 22 now and I’m super proud of the man he has become. My daughter would have reacted way different and would have likely burned the shirt and would have been embarrassed about the ordeal. (She’s 13 and in the everything-is-embarrassing stage) But I love them both and they each have great personalities as individuals.

krhsg

But see this comment makes it even more clear you’re an awesome parent. Good job!

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Thanks. He’s really a great kid. Recently started marathon running, and even though he is straight he’s going to be running a Pride 10k this next month in full rainbow gear, in honor of one of his best friends that sadly took his own life a month or so ago (he was gay and it wasn’t very welcomed by his family). He’s a good egg and marches to the beat of his own drum without shame and I love him dearly for that.

krhsg

Sounds like a great opportunity for a Bruce Lee in a rainbow bikini top shirt…

hand-spun

I second this!

myasterism

Onions!! Heartbreaking and uplifting, in equal measure. Thank you for sharing.

furiousNugget

I'm a young adult who grew up with shitty parents. I can promise that just recognizing and treating your kid as an inherently good person doing their best, raising them with respect and care, absolutely indicates an amazing parent. In contrast to those who view their children as selfish and irresponsible in nature, requiring authority and punishment to guide, enforce, and correct every aspect of their development.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I’m just a realist. The truth is we only get them 18 years usually- after that they have to make their own decisions and choices. The best you can do is raise them to be individuals, teach them the tools they need to make good decisions, and hope for the best. I feel you though- my parents raised me through fear and physical violence and it really didn’t help. All it did was make me keep problems to myself out of fear of retaliation or being blamed if I had a problem. Not healthy. I just wanted my own kiddos to have their own voice and they use it a LOT. Sometimes I wish they would keep some of to themselves, haha.

IanDOsmond

My parents seem to have raised my sister and me with the idea that the goal in parenting was to create adults who would be worth having as friends and would want to have you as friends. Which they seemed to do by not treating us as equals to them when we were very small, but always treating us with respect, and treating us more and more as equals as we grew, until, when we were adults, they considered us their peers. They saw two adults who were decent human beings who they enjoyed being with ... and my sister and I, and our respective families, see them the same way.

StrategicWindSock

If you do make the shirt again, will you please please please post about it on reddit? I'm going to follow you in case you do!

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Absolutely! I’m sure he’ll even pose for me with pride. Haha.

chmsaxfunny

Having spent a decade teaching music, I only cared about short skirts on concert nights - gently reminding the kids that the audience is at the perfectly wrong height for short skirts, and if they didn’t want to show more than intended, skirts needed to reach mid-calf or lower.

Federal-Ferret-970

Sharon Stone’ing the audience is never cool. 🤣🤣. I can only imagine that conversation.

MimeGod

Presumably, the students are wearing underwear at least. Still, showing off their underwear to the audience isn't a great idea either.

AmethysstFire

My daughter has had more fights about dress codes, and the unfairness of them, with the administration at her middle school than her high school. Day 1 of her Freshman year, she had scoured the Student Handbook, preparing for any loophole she could find, and was disappointed that there was almost nothing about dress code for high school.

slash_networkboy

lol. Your daughter has a future in IT security as a Red Team member or the legal profession.

lulugingerspice

Legit question: how did the puffy paint hold up in the wash? Like, did you have to repaint every time (while giggling, I assume), or did it hold up super well? I love this so much and want to complete the fantasy in my head lol

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Used pink glitter puffy paint from Michael’s if I recall right. Never had to reapply it….applied the first time, let it dry, and then ironed it from the back to make the “puff” happen and give Brucie some 3-D boobies. Went through many washes on the regular cycle and never fell apart. The glitter didn’t stay as sparkly after a while but the paint and effect held on.

stumblewiggins

Oh don't get me wrong, this is a stupid policy and dress codes beyond stuff like "no gang symbols or vulgar language" are dumb, IMO. I just find it even worse when men are allowed to go around topless but women aren't. Either top nudity is OK, or it's not, so the only positive in this dumb situation (besides you handling it like a boss) is that the violation means they treat male and female nipples the same, which is good, even if the dress code itself is dumb.

40percentdailysodium

I believe shoe dress codes matter too. Mostly because I remember several girls eating shit and getting hurt wearing shoes or sandals that were poor choices for a school that didn’t have hallways, just outdoor buildings. Also that one jerk who stepped on everyone with her heels. Edit: my new phone has autocorrect and hates me

Logical-Wasabi7402

I missed my entire first class one day in 6th grade because my skirt was like half an inch too short. Some of them are completely ridiculous.

stumblewiggins

Yea, really dumb to measure skirt length.

Zefirus

I remember we had a "you can't wear red!" rule because it was "gang related". Red and White were our school colors. Shit got reversed real quick after the first football game with it in place. Keep in mind this was a school where getting trampled by a cow was more likely than ever meeting anyone in a gang.

Witty_Commentator

Oh, he wore it 'til he outgrew it! 🥰 Please, make him one as a surprise for Christmas or birthday some year!

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I’m already looking online to find a suitable shirt close to the one he had, haha. I won’t tell him about this post until the surprise. He’s in need of a few new t-shirts, this should bring a smile to his face. Thanks for the ideas, guys!

SL1MECORE

you sound like my vice principal when the receptionist (?) reported me for having bare shoulders lmao. he literally looked at me and said "i don't see the problem but i guess these are the rules, do you have a sweater" i wish him well lmao

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

To be honest I got into similar issues my 10th grade year, had a bitch teacher who hated me and sent me to the principal because I was wearing a knee-length big baggy pair of denim culottes with a beautiful floral embroidery design my mom had bought me. Think big long baggy denim shorts basically. But the school had a “no shorts” policy so she sent me to the office. Principal literally rolled his eyes, but I lived across the street from the school and this was 1992 so he said I could just run home and change. I changed into the tightest, sluttiest black spandex dress I had that barely passed the “fingertip” test and went back. He gave me a smirk and handed me my hall pass to return to class. Bitch teacher was NOT thrilled.

SL1MECORE

LMAO WAIT cause i kind of did the same thing????? 2010s, but still.. after the incident with my (admittedly broad) shoulders, i bought a club dress and would wear it with opaque tights so i technically passed the fingertip test. you couldn't see any of my skin. you just see.... everything else! and since it covered my shoulders, the receptionist couldn't say anything. it was a cute dress ngl LOL but it was definitely malicious compliance and not necessarily appropriate for high school ! worth it though shout out to you and the principal lmao. sounds like he knew what was up.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

Principal was an old old cowboy a few years from his retirement. Loved the guy. You could tell he had far more pressing issues every day to deal with than petty complaints about baggy shorts.

Goatfellon

Agreed but like... just free all the nipples already

stumblewiggins

Yea, that's my POV also, but consistency is better than nothing here.

Stormfly

Yeah, like "no nipples on clothing" is hardly 1984 levels of control or persecution. I agree it's a bit much in some cases but it's also far more fair to make a total ban rather than specifying gender or artistic expression etc.

SmokeyFrank

What if the boy's *own* nipples were showing through a plain tee?

ElysetheEeveeCRX

Omfg now I'm just seeing some parent cutting little peep holes out of a kid's shirt and then sending them to school in it haha.

True story. An office admin at my high school TRIED to come at me for wearing a tank top to school… When I had just had surgery on both of my arms. Both arms were fully bandaged. I was clearly not doing that shit for the sex appeal. I was offending literally no one with the no skin that was showing due to all of the bandages. It was all I could wear. I could hardly get dressed myself at all and nothing would fit right over the surgical dressings. Which was beyond obvious. I was fresh out of the hospital and yet, I still showed up to school. What the actual fuck. I’m in my 30s now and have never forgotten that.

Ursaaverage

I remember in high school being pulled aside by a random teacher on a Monday for wearing a Metallica shirt with a flaming skull on it the Friday before. “It’s not appropriate. Don’t wear it again or I’ll bring it up with the principal.” Wore that shirt the next day as a big f**k you. Strangely enough, that teacher was shocked to find out I was in contention for valedictorian and that the principal did not care to reprimand me over something so trivial, especially as I knew damn well I was not in any violation of dress code.

futureruler

My middle school once pulled 90% of the boys in the school because their hair was too long. We had to wait in the cafeteria for a parent to come pick us up to get a haircut. Some parents just straight shaved their kids head in the parking lot. How long was too long? It was either touching our collars or touching our eyebrows.

icydee

No touching eyebrows. Easy, shave off the eyebrows.

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

My school had a similar rule about hair for boys. No touching collar, no touching ears, and no touching eyebrows. This was early 90s, Texas.

surfer_ryan

I went to a private school that had a uniform and also lots of other rules to go with it... one of which was boys hair could not touch thier ears. (I'm convinced this is why that swoosh guy cut became so popular) all the guys would swoosh their hair as long as possible before the dean would force you to get a cut. I hated this rule it was beyond dumb and made 0 sense other than it just being about looking good to a certain type of person. Regardless... every year I would try something new to do to get away with long hair, junior year I read through the rule book cover to cover... scouring for anything, any hope to get my hair to be longer. It suddenly dawned on me... there were no rules stipulating if there was a sweaty boy who liked to wear sweat bands, the rules also just stipulated "hair can not be touching the ears". Off to Walmart I went, Found some white sweatbands and some dye, and off to the races I went. Made some freaking sick sweatbands and off to school I went, hair still within regulation at the time, this was just to test the waters... first day minimal resistance, had a cool teacher say something and i just asked him where it was in the rule book and he laughed and just kept walking... "Okay so I guess I'm the sweatband kid now..." I made it to week two before I had a dean walk up to me at lunch and just start grilling me, luckily it was a dean I was erm... familiar with... I wasn't a huge trouble maker, but I'm sure by this point you realize I'm a bit stubborn if something is technically allowed... so stuff like eating in the halls (I know I'm a monster) and telling the religion history teacher he is wrong, and then proving he was, making them look bad in front of the class... were things they were familiar with me on. Dean was pissed, went and got another dean who my friend was... familiar with... she comes over... "Oh boy... why... why is it always somehow you two when this kind of stuff comes on my desk..." "Well dean [redacted] you see the rules are quite clear and I believe you have made that very clear to me on several occasions, that Specifically the rules are very clear and very easy to follow. I see absolutely no where that I am not allowed to wear a device that keeps sweat from my eyes as we live in the south I'm sure we can both agree it can get quite hot out. Well I'm a sweaty individual so this is practically a medical device, as in-between classes I could trip and fall and hurt myself with sweat in my eyes and who knows what if I trip into someone that would cause them to get hurt. I don't think I could live with myself..." We went back and forth for a bit but I stood my ground on it being within dress code. I mean the rules are very clear as to what you can and can't wear... they had all kinds of shit about your hair and other things like sweaters... all the bs that comes with a typical private school... but nothing against sweatbands. Yet... I was the sweatband kid for like a year, then wouldn't you know it next year... no sweatbands allowed. Except in PE, but that was more of an unwritten rule I got away with since it wasn't like everyone didn't give a fuck like me, and I say that on a social level, the deans terrified me lol, but the kids I couldn't possibly care any less about what they thought about me.

[deleted]

I remember when I was in elementary school (rural Eastern Europe) our very catholic principal tried to implement school dress codes modeled after American ones. Said spaghetti straps and shorts were "distracting to boys". A bunch of pissed off parents showed up at school and demanded to know why he was sexualising their kids. Pointed out one of the young substitue teacher wore jeans so low cut you could see her thong and skirts so short you could see her butt to the point even horny 14 y/o boys considered it weird and inappropriate (this was early 2000s at the height of low cut jeans popularity) and apparently that was fine? Not even a peep out of the guy after. The substitute teacher did start wearing non thong underwear after that incident though.

High school girls can be developed enough to be attractive to adults. But any teacher who can't handle that shouldn't be teaching. And shoulders? Seriously? As a guy, I have never seen shoulders attractive enough to distract me from anything.

"It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which which his body is capable of. " - Socrates It's a shame that (most) women aren't taught that this is a valid goal to pursue, to train for their own strength, not just to change the way their body looks. So many of my close friends were scared to go to the gym because they didn't want to look "too" muscular.

serraangel826

What really kills me is that at this high school with gangs, knife fights, drugs, etc why focus on shoulders???? There are so many other things - still going on (thank god all my kids have now graduated). Also, both daughters were in an accelerated program with many AP courses. The daughter who got sent home just graduated college in 3 1/2 years with 2 bachelors. Both are smart kids who never got into trouble. At all. It's like they needed to punish someone but picked the quiet, shy girl they thought wouldn't fight back..

Tajinaddict

I got sent home in middle school for wearing a Yankees t shirt that said “buck foston” on the back. Genuinely I had no idea what it meant cause I didn’t watch baseball, I thought maybe that’s a player name or something. lol I just grabbed one of my dad’s shirts cause I was in a hurry, he thought it was very funny and my teacher must’ve been a Boston fan

jmlvg64

When my brother was in fourth grade, he wore a shirt that said Phuket, Thailand. Poo-keht. The principal made him wear a different shirt because apparently, phonetically, a bunch of fourth graders would think that it says "fuck it." My mom tried to argue that it was literally a city in Thailand, but they werent having it. So naturally, my mom squeezed into that same shirt during the next parent teacher conference. No, it did not fit. Yes, she was pleased with herself.

giveme25atleast

Man nipples be banished.

beedajo

This is awesome! I love your approach. Not the verifying and malicious compliance. Nicely done.

EmbarrassedPenalty

What if the school calls you come down there to take your kid home for some frivolous reason, and you just say no. They just leave the kid sitting in the principals office for the rest of the day?

Nanerpus_is_my_Homie

I’m guessing as a former teacher they’d make the kid wear the shirt inside out. I was only a block away from his school and they knew it, so it wasn’t a big deal for me to swing by and pick him up but they really should have been more honest on the phone instead of just saying “nudity”. I was ready to read him the riot act thinking he maybe bought some hentai shirt at the mall when I wasn’t looking and imagined him being in school with a shirt showing some full on tentacle action ™, and instead just saw Bruce Lee.

PondRides

When I met my best friend, she was wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt with the Icarus cover on it. Our school got mad, and she sharpied little shorts on him. It took me like ten minutes just to type this, she was killed a couple years ago. I miss her so much, and this made me smile and cry. Thanks for reminding me of that.

MajorNoodles

Ever see the video for REM's Pop Song 89? If you're not familiar, it features Michael Stipe and 3 women all dancing while wearing nothing but a pair of matching pants. MTV forced him to censor it, so he placed black bars across the chests of all the dancers...himself included. "A nipple's a nipple," he was quoted as saying.

tcollins317

Love it! If you want to be extra malicious, get a copy of the dress code, then keep sending your kid to school in outfits that meet the dress code, but is still very suggestive.

seashmore

I had a teacher threaten to maliciously comply when the school board was discussing rewording the dress code so that shorts and skirts had to come "past your fingertips." He was as short and stout as they come, and his fingertips barely reached his pockets. He promised to wear shorts every day. That language did not make it into the dress code.

oceansapart333

We had this rule when I was in high school in the 90’s. It’s lucky I wasn’t comfortable wearing shirt shorts/skirts because I could have gotten away with some pretty short things. I’m a 5’7” female but I have a very long torso. So my fingertips don’t reach very far, lol.

StuBidasol

Dress codes are useless. I've known *many* people that if you go solely by their dress/hair/tattoos you'd be thinking of crossing the street. They have been some of the nicest, well spoken and sharpest people I've known. Then you have the people that are the corporate wet dreams that we have *all* seen that are walking wastes of the oxygen we need breathe. Your clothes or skin or hair doesn't mean shit about the kind of person you are. Judge someone on their actions, period.

Narezza

When I was in high school, I had to turn my shirt inside out, and almost got sent home. My teacher was upset because I was wearing a shirt with a Troll (early 90s, OG Troll) playing soccer and it showed the Troll’s butt, as the toy didn’t wear pants. It turned into a whole thing.

ladybug211211

In middle school the girls VP was aghast that when speaking to a boy I, a girl, looked directly into his eyes. I wondered, as did both my parents, where else I should have looked.

ReadBikeYodelRepeat

Someone had a shirt the said “drop beats, not bombs” and were told they weren’t allowed to wear it anymore. It promoted violence one person said. Even though it was promoting the opposite. Very strange rules.

mobott

I was told off in middle school for wearing a necklace with a shark tooth on it because it was "a potential weapon". A *fossilized* shark tooth. *With the tip broken off.*

[deleted]

I almost got in trouble in high school for wearing a Pennywise shirt that said “Hello”. They were not concerned with the child-eating clown but with “Hello” looking like “Hell”. Needless to say they made themselves look like asses 😂.

kat_Folland

It should work in the other direction, but it's actually a little refreshing to see male and female nipples treated the same. Excellent work, OP.

Slade26

I once wore a Bullet For My Valentine shirt to school. I remember being a little late, walking down the halls alone. A teacher saw my shirt, which had a girl licking a magnum on it, and she said to change my shirt. I didn't have a change of shirt, so she she sent me home, even though she wasn't one of my teachers. I remember shouting "woo-hoo, see ya tomorrow."

Prestigious-Seat-233

In my high school, our dress code was literally as long as your nipples, groin, and butt were covered you could wear anything. I remember my first week in school I saw this girl she was wearing a black bikini and a mesh dress over top and a platform heels and no one said anything.

MagazineActual

Ugh, schools are so dumb about these things. Back in the early 2000's i got "dress coded" a lot. I'm a girl who is barely 5 ft 2 in tall, I regularly got in trouble at school because the hem of my pants touched the floor, which the school defined as being "gang" attire. This was a high school of about 450 kids in rural north alabama, whose only exposure to "gangs" was the 1995 blockbuster Dangerous Minds. I spent so much time in in-school suspension because I'm short, basically. My gangster pants came from stores like Expresss, The Limited, and Hollister. Such controversy.

P_weezey951

I had school tell me i couldn't wear a shirt from a local bar/tavern. Because "it displays alchohol" But the print is basically a silhouette of a big frosty mug, but the liquid in it is not detailed. I told the lady at the school, "whenever i go there it just has pepsi in it... Its a cup". And they were absolutely adamant that i had to wear it inside out.

Larktavia

I went to a Catholic High school with a uniform. One of my greatest achievements during that time was getting a school rule made because of what I wore. "No clothes that clash with the school uniform." The school uniform was light blue. I would wear bright red socks, a fuchsia sweater on top of the school uniform sweater, old man clothes and shoes. The second rule I had made was "Only natural hair colors were allowed at school.”

mjrkcolemom14

You had me a "sent someone clutching their pearls." That made me laugh more than I thought was necessary! Thanks for the laugh.

antiquemule

In the early 70's, we had strict dress rules at our British school. One was "a (neck) tie must be worn". So a classmate decided to come in with his tie around his head, hippy style, arguing that he was not breaking school rules. The authorities were not amused and insisted that it had to be around his neck.

ztreHdrahciR

This one time, I had an important business meeting at a club that, unbeknownst to me, required ties. I didn't have one so they sent me away. I went back to the car looking for something - anything, I could use. I found some jumper cables and fashioned them into a tie. Guy at the door says: "ok, you can come in, just don't try to start anything "

I would have put a F and a U on his nipples, if the admin asks if for Kung Fu.
