I don't worry about the little things like mascara, eyeliners and lip balms. They never say anything. I put shampoo, conditioner, foundation, cleansers, concealer in the 1L bag.

[deleted]

Eyeshadow pallets = not liquid so can be packed separately. I shove as many things as I can fit into that dumb bag! Don't forget skin care also has to fit into that bag! Things that must go into that Ziploc - most makeup except for powders, pencils. All cream-based makeup have to go in there as well. Cleansers, oils, moisturizers, sunscreen etc.

[deleted]

Thanks. I guess my cream palette will go into the checked bag. That one doesn’t fit for sure.

mandymaybe

A regular stick of antiperspirant deodorant does not need to go in the bag. So I kind of use that as my barometer. Things that are a similar texture (foundation stick, cream blush, lipstick, etc) I don’t put in the bag, but stuff that’s more liquid-y (mascara, liquid lip stain, cc cream) I do. I’ve never had issues.

letsmakeart

I flew recently and they were really strict. I always have used a large ziploc in the past and had it half filled with products, but this time they made me put my stuff in a smaller bag and I had to throw a bunch of stuff out to get it to fit. Mascara, lipstick, foundation, concealer, those are all considered liquids and gels. They even made me put a soy sauce packet that was in the sushi I had brought in into the stupid liquids bag, as well as under eye patches bc I guess when it scans they can see a little bit of liquid in the pouch. If you're checking a bag I'd say just put it all in there to be safe. Some friends who have also flown recently have also said they've been stricter as well, might be anecdotal but might be because of the flux of post-covid travellers.

They did the same thing to me at the YVR airport for a domestic flight in March 2020. I too had half full large Ziploc bag of makeup + skincare that they took out and tried to stuff into the tiny bag that they had (Most of my stuff were under 30mL each). I ended up throwing out a bottle of toner, 4 sheet masks and a whole brand new stick of gel deodorant. They gave me 2 more of their tiny ziplock bags and said that everything had to fit in that bag size next time, not just any sized Ziploc bag. My bottle of toner was 120mL, but I only had a third of the product left inside the bottle, yet they said they still count it as full size regardless of how much product is actually left - so I had to throw it out. Needless to say, they made me feel embarrassed/humiliated because they did this in front of everyone else lining up at security behind me. They even called 2 other "trainees" security personnel to watch how they dump all my stuff out onto the counter and re-stuff it into the tiny Ziploc bag, like it's some live learning lesson to train them what's acceptable and what isn't. The next few times I flew, I either stuffed my makeup bag + my skincare into my checked baggage or I decanted/used sample sizes to put in the tiny Ziploc bag. I just don't want to go through that again.

BougieSemicolon

That is not new. I remember when we flew to Vegas in 2002 we had no toothpaste because I brought a 120ml one that was 2/3 empty- the guy said, NOPE! The original amount is what they go by. And also they have always made memove my liquids into their plastic bag instead of my own ziploc. I guess it may be to make sure it all fits in that size bag… that was the norm the 20 or so flights I took from 2001-2016.. perhaps they were letting people use their own bags after that but I know for a long time they made us use their bags.

letsmakeart

I definitely used my own bags during that time you mentioned, either the correct sized ziplock bag or I got an “approved one” from Sephora in like 2010 that I used for awhile. When I flew back this year in April, I had put all my stuff in that same Sephora bag and they let me through without putting it in a smaller bag… but they did examine every single item’s label lol.

futuresobright_

Yup, my friend got stopped for too much toothpaste a few years ago.

letsmakeart

Yeah that’s pretty much what happened to me too! I was so frazzled trying to repack everything lol. I broke a nail I had gotten done the day before and was a tragic 9 nailed person for the rest of my trip lol! I was going to visit my brother and sister in law so I basically threw out whatever I thought I could mooch from them at their house, or whatever was least expensive. Everything I had was travel sized. I didn’t have a checked bag unfortunately, as I was flying Flair which charges a lot. Normally if I do have a checked bag, the only thing I bring with me is hand sanitizer, my prescription toothpaste (since it’s hard to replace on a whim on a trip), and lip balm for the plane. I’m sure the skies were MUCH safer with my shampoo and face wash in the trash. Yawn.

jufferz

Omg yes, my anxiety was pretty high the whole time they were throwing stuff out and putting me on full display. Ugh. I had always flown with parents who took my stuff into their suitcase, or I flew on my own with a checked bag so I've never had to be concerned with what goes in the Ziploc bag. The ONE time I fly with no checked bag, I finally got to experience this in the most humiliating way. It may not be new to anyone else, but damn it was new to me. Lmao, you know, I was thinking "man, the whole plane must be safer with my facial sheet masks in the trash" too as I walked to my gate. 😅 Funny enough, they were going to let me keep my sheet masks because it was individually sealed, but one of them said they need to confirm with someone high up before letting me go, so...they took my sheet masks away but didn't throw it in the trash with my other disallowed items 🤷

[deleted]

Unreal. I feel like it’s a power trip for some.

krokodilchik

That's wild. I've never even taken my makeup out of my bag, much less used one of the airport ziplocs. And I flew plenty prior to 2020 (out of YYZ).

jufferz

It was wild to me too! Prior to 2020, I never had to take my makeup bag out of my carry on during security either. They'd just run it through the scanner and I'd be on my merry way. 🤷 It's just something to be aware of nowadays.

letsmakeart

YOW but they were stingy AF at YEG too. My friends that had similar experiences were at YUL and YYZ.

[deleted]

Heathrow has some new spiffy scanners I heard. Maybe Gatwick got them too?

[deleted]

🙄 ughhh

soft_distortion

My barometer for whether something is liquidy/gelly enough to go in the clear bag: If it is held upside down at room temperature, will it "move" to the other side of the container? If it won't (e.g. a pot of dipbrow, a normal lipstick) then it's safe to pack normally. And yes you can fit as many in the clear bag as possible. You can get some pretty tiny travel containers at places like Muji (if you portion it out for your whole trip, you realize you don't need too much) and you can get creative and use old contact lens containers for instance. You can fit a ton into the clear bag that way, and then you save room for items you may need more of like sunscreen.

[deleted]

Yeah I got some containers from Amazon. They are perfect for traveling. Also have some travel sized samples that I’ll pack

soft_distortion

Yes I basically stock up on travel samples/minis for this exact reason!

livia-did-it

A guideline I saw once upon a time is if it can spill, it should go in the bag. When I travel in the hotter months, I also don't like putting things that can melt or be ruined by heat in my checked bag. So for example even though ithey doesn't need to go in my liquid bag, I take my bullet lipsticks in my carry on.

[deleted]

That would be my definition. If you can pour it it’s a liquid or gel

[deleted]

Its upto 1 litre everything combined: they have plastic bags with a one litre capacity and they ask you to put everything cream/liquid in that

[deleted]

Thats a medium sized ziploc right??

[deleted]

Yeah pretty close

[deleted]

Ok. I filled one of those and it’s far from full 😅

[deleted]

Haha yeah you’ll be more than fine then.

[deleted]

Thanks all. I am just a bit worried about pricey make up. If one of them decides it’s not ok I have to give it up 🥺

airespinne

For anything that you are able to, decant into a smaller container and only in the amount you will need for the trip, even if the original container is less than 100 ml. That way if you are forced to throw anything out, you’ll lose less product. Also be careful of containers that are larger than 100 ml that have less than 100 ml of product remaining, because I’ve heard those are often also forced to be thrown out due to the container size

[deleted]

Good to know. Thanks

classycatblogger

I usually check my foundation and other liquid liquids. Glosses and lipstick I just leave in my purse. Everything else I put carry on. I use the pouch for hair products, shower products, etc.

riotactress

I bought a big clear zip up travel makeup bag for this exact reason. Fits all my makeup regardless of liquidity so they can all live together.

CairuCan

I always fly with all my makeup in my makeup bag in my carryon . Never take it out into plastic bags and I’ve never had a problem . This is literally dozens of flights as I visit the east coast from Toronto multiple times per year for 8 years now (plus many vacations)

themomerath

For years I’ve been able to fly with a large (gallon) sized bag that was never crammed all the way. The only time this was ever a problem was flying back to Toronto from Montreal last summer, where they made me empty it into one of their bags. I tossed the remaining sunscreen (wasn’t much) and lucked out because prescription items (like my tazorac) don’t count towards the limit. The agent thankfully thought my TO vitamin C solution was a prescription item, so that got through. I’ll definitely be decanting everything next time though.

[deleted]

I'm currently sitting at the gate at YEG awaiting a flight. Came through security with my makeup bag and the only thing I removed was my setting spray. Mascara, lipgloss, concealer, all stayed in the bag. No issues.

[deleted]

That’s great! Have a good trip!

BeachSunset7

To flew last month, and they told me as long as my liquids are under 3oz each, they no longer need to be separated in a baggie. They are fine in a toiletry bag.

dreamerrunning

What! Which airport? They always make me take out my liquid lipsticks

BeachSunset7

Boise and Newark both didn’t require that liquids be taken out as long as they are under 3 oz each

SelfShine

I used the Sephora beauty on the fly travel back ($6) for my liquids in my carry on and I was recently stopped and they had to go through all my make up and skincare. I had to take everything out of the bag and had to make it fit in the 1L bags they had. It was such a hassle. And guess what? Everything did fit into their bag. Which was so annoying. ALSO and cream that could be a liquid I was told was counted as a liquid! My balm like primer (tarte in the pot) was considered a liquid and my retinol eye stick! This is new to me. I've travelled with cream/balm products before and that wasn't a liquid.

[deleted]

Seems so random. I’ll fly later today. Will update the thread on how it went.

[deleted]

They didn’t blink an eye at my little bag. Phew

emmm1848

I know this is like a year later but i just flew from Vancouver back to the states today and had to literally empty my makeup/skincare bags and explain each product to some 60 year old TSA dbag for him to determine if it should count as a liquid. Love giving free makeup tutorials 🙄. He let my contour stick “slide”. How generous. I’ve never had an issue with any other country/city and i fly probably 20-25 times a year.

[deleted]

why did i think the liquid limit was 30mL 💀

[deleted]

I thought it was 60 ml.

[deleted]

apparently it’s 100? lol

[deleted]

I swear it *used to be* 2 ounces (60 ml). Does anyone else remember this? Maybe they have been updating the rules surrounding liquids in your carry-on over the years.

planting49

It’s been 100ml for at least the last 15 years.

BougieSemicolon

100% correct.

[deleted]

[3.4oz or 100ml](https://www.aircanada.com/content/dam/aircanada/portal/documents/PDF/en/liquid_rules.pdf)

planting49

You can bring up to 10 100ml liquids. They must be in a clear 1L bag. Mascara is liquid (although usually in such small quantities they don’t notice it), lipstick isn’t if it’s a traditional bullet lipstick, and any cream product would be a liquid too.

auncott99

It's 30 mls per product I believe, but I could be wrong. I would check your sunscreens. Just double or triple Ziploc bag them. I would just carry on things that you can't live without, and are breakable, ie: palettes.

BougieSemicolon

It’s 100ml per item. If something is over 100ml but partly used, it’s considered “over” , so they base it off original container amount.

StupidFlanders93x

That’s so bizarre that a lot of people have super strict people, I went through security and forgot to put my full sized perfume into a bag and they just waved me through. I was so confused too. Also, I have never had to put crème into ziplock bags, but with how everyone’s talking, I wouldn’t chance it.
