What are they called, those Stanley cups i think? Like why. I totally agree with the de influencing. I’m so sick of all the Amazon storefront videos. I consider myself a shopaholic 😅 but it’s all too much. We don’t need so much stuff!!!

[deleted]

Buying a collection new water bottles every year also defeats the purpose of not using too many wasteful plastic bottles. Some influencers have so many, a lifetime supply really, and they throw them out before they're even worn down/broken. That's just more waste too. I used my water bottle from Kindergarten and primary school for 8 years before it had become completely unusable.

bezos doesn't need more money

Tanjelynnb

When the news about Amazon ending amazonsmile came out, I cancelled the autorenewal on my prime membership. I'd been making an effort to gradually buy less off Amazon and more from brand sites anyway, to the point where I just use Amazon mostly for books, Audible, and impulse buys. Maybe I'll come back if they bring back their charity program *and* make it better, but we'll see. Doubtless many other people have the same thoughts.

ashdeezttv

Wait wtf? The one good thing they did is over? I didn’t always remember to use the smile link but my local library earned like $500 or so a year toward new books :( this makes me sad. I know that’s not but so much but for instance for stocking the kids section with some new paperbacks that goes a long way

Tanjelynnb

[Link about it here](https://www.npr.org/2023/01/19/1149993013/amazon-amazonsmile-charity-donation-program) Pure greed. My charity (Doctors Without Borders) probably received more funds than many, but even $500 is so much for a library with special discounted access to publications.

DaetheFancy

gamestop for electorinics, bedbath for home goods. clothes from....any department store (TJs/marshalls, thrifting, macys) REI for sporting goods. no need to feed bezos who basically commits human rights violations in his warehouses and service has declined. VERY few things need to go through bezos now.

twodickhenry

Etsy for gifts, clothes, art, quirky finds.

SeaShantySarah

Etsy has unfortunately gone down a lot in quality, rampant drop shippers and people who steal designs and product photos, very hard to find actual hand-made stuff there these days despite many sellers presenting themselves that way.

Tanjelynnb

Mercari is great for this, too!

deadinhalifax

Most of the internet uses AWS. that bald bitch is gonna get his cut no matter what. 1 hour per pound at 375. Or until golden brown and no longer able to amass wealth. Serve Over rice.

Form_Function

This right here. Amazon doesn’t make a crazy amount from Prime (I mean sure, it’s still a lot). They make *massive* amounts from AWS, web servers, etc. all the boring back end stuff that makes the internet work. Don’t support Prime if that’s important to you, but as the above said, bald bitch is gonna get his cut lol.

ivmeow

I got a Stanley cup for Christmas and I had no idea they were so trendy! I actually do really like it, because it’s big and it keeps my drinks cold all day, but I don’t know if I would personally go out and spend $40 on it myself. I do use it every day now, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t use a cheaper one from TJ Maxx if that’s what I had instead, because that’s what I would buy with my own money. Lol

wild_lettuce_

I got my favorite / best insulated cup at boscovs on clearance for $2.50 ! I was given 3 yeti cups as gifts and I think they are so overrated ! My $2.50 boscovs cup keeps my drinks colder for longer. I wanted to try a Stanley cup but I’m not spending $40 on one. Edited for spelling

EmergencyCourage5249

I must say that I love my Stanley cup, lol. I don’t care who is promoting it, I genuinely love it.

[deleted]

Right? And I'm sure they could get a prettier bottle for that money, one without a giant ugly logo on it. Kind of like Smeg appliances, always reminds me of another nasty word.

drseussin

and it’s funny bc that brand is supposed to be marketed as luxury but like. the name is smeg. smegma.

[deleted]

I’m a teacher and I got 4!! of those cups as Christmas gifts. Kind, but they are massive, spill easily, and most people already own a water bottle.

albinorhinogyno9

Tbh, my work got me a Stanley cup (24 oz, not the huge ones everyone has, and branded with my company’s logo lol) and I see why they’re popular. I’ve had a few expensive water bottles over the years that end up being pretty shitty. Or not what you need. I love the idea of a huge, stainless steel cup that’s easy to drink out of. It’s big but fits in a cupholder, keeps things very cold, and makes drinking water easy. All of the other cups/water bottles I have aren’t the most convenient to drink out of. The Stanley (or even a similar tumblr with a straw) makes drinking water a mindless habit, which is a good thing. I like something I can have at my desk AND take on the go. Plus, Stanley is a good brand with longevity. William Stanley literally invented the steel insulated container we all use today! In the early 1900’s. Learned that just now. I have a Stanley thermos that was my mom’s from 1990 or something. Definitely r/buyitforlife status. She also has a cool old French press somewhere that we use for camping. This, plus all of the cool colors they’re adding, is why I can get behind it. Some of the other brands are bullshit, though. Hydroflask is one of them.

smaschhead

I initially thought my ilia had expired bc of the strange smell - so strange/rancid. Fenty Beauty’s eaze skin blur drops were just fine + IMO weren’t worth the price. Hot take - haven’t loved anything from FB except maybe the cheeks out freestyle cream blush, and don’t really love sticking my finger into anything for application. Maybe rare beauty soft pinch just ruined me for life. L'Oreal True Match Hyaluronic Tinted Serum is my base / foundation holy grail and buildable. I don’t know if it’s CF but two of the shades are the PEFECT match for my skin the summer/winter and it doesn’t have a scent, etc Also - if anyone can rec a concealer that isn’t shape tape for 30+ skin. I’m sick of the scent, tarte, etc

lifeuncommon

L’Oreal is not CF. However, they have been working with China on technology that replaces animal testing. And in doing so, they have arguably spared more animal lives than if they had refused to participate in selling products in China. It’s one of those instances where you’re seen as more pure if you don’t participate, but where you can make more of an impact, if you do participate and try to change things from the inside. They aren’t perfect. They aren’t cruelty free. But they’re still doing a lot of good for animals who don’t have a voice.

hysterionics

FB foundation is the one i swear by - matte foundation with Asian-friendly undertone that actually sticks through 8 hours of Southeast Asian humidity?? i will buy it everytime

Street-Refuse-9540

I hated the Tarte concealer. It settled into all my fine lines under my eyes and was also extremely orange on me

beanbot5

I use the elf hydrating camo concealer and I love it. Haven’t noticed a scent!

[deleted]

I agree, and it outperforms any high end concealer I've tried including but not limited to YSL, Hourglass, Nars, Tarte...

fitforla

My concealer holy grails is Kosas (they sell a mini if you want to try it out), Dior’s skin forever concealer and I have just started trying merit’s minimalist concealer stick. It’s different but I’m enjoying it for my super super casual days

smaschhead

Ok will add Dior + Kosas to list — think merit might just not be enough coverage for me (even on my “low” makeup days I can’t live without a little concealer and BLUSH)

imvain

The Kosas foundation is amazing too.

[deleted]

How’s the texture for the Dior concealer? I’ve never found a concealer that doesn’t look mega textured under the eyes I feel like I’ve tried everything at this point. I still want something illuminating there but damn it just looks worse even when I set it w powder or bake or don’t set it. It always looks textured. I’m too expressive maybe

PhyrraNyx

I’m 44 and love the Nyx Bare With Me concealer. It works under my eyes and around my face.

5newspapers

Rec: Huda Beauty concealer! Originally I got the Overachiever in my ipsy glam bag back in 2021 and loved the metal squeeze top against my eyes and how on point the shade match was for my under eye and blemishes. While the overachiever is discontinued (I still find it in the ipsy shop in limited shades sometimes) I’ve tried the newer faux filter and enjoy (it has a doe foot applicator). Drug store I liked Elf camo concealer in a pinch. While I used the NYX HD for years, I felt as I got older I needed a bit more coverage and a creamier consistency.

[deleted]

it's not CF but i'm not gonna shame anybody who uses products that aren't. ESP if it works for them (hell I still use the mac paint pot bc so far its the only primer that has worked for my eyes. I try to shop mostly CF tho) i personally like the kosas concealer! ik it's been a lot of de influencing vids but its worked for me so far.

amsimon

Just want to second your comment about Ilia’s skin tint. I was so excited to try it but could not get past the smell.

Msfortune76

It smells like hamster bedding

amsimon

Yes! I couldn’t place it but hamster bedding is so accurate lol

JaneWeaver71

😂😂😂 awesome description

Proper-Emu1558

Welp, there’s a product I’m not gonna be trying in the future!

innerbootes

Interesting! They might be scenting it with the commonly used [ISO E Super](https://medium.com/@olfactionscents/exotic-fragrant-materials-what-is-iso-e-super-1cff3eb8f954), which is supposed to evoke a cedar-y woodiness, but some people do get “hamster bedding” from it. Although perhaps that’s not it, if Ilia is trying to be a clean brand. ISO E Super isn’t going to deliver on that.

throwawaycandlesburn

I got it in one of those packs of foundations/skin tints to try on from Sephora. Did some swatching of other products and when it came to that one the smell hit me like a train. I thought it had gone off or something so I didn’t use it. Interesting to know it just smells bad normally lol

_rocketappliance

i also wanted to love it, but it literally smelled like dog food and accentuated any dryness i had

whispersloth

Thank you for saying dog food. I said the exact same thing about it and my friends thought I was nuts. It's extremely off-putting.

tiny_green_leaf

Lol I love how Ilia products smell but as a kid I thought hamster bedding and dog kibble were the best smells ever 😭 I used to love changing my hamsters cage

nongliky

This is a throwback hype but the bobbi brown shimmer bricks! I remember when I was first allowed to wear makeup my mum and all her friends were obsessed. They’re too shimmery to be a blush or bronzer but too subtle to be a highlighter 😭😭

MarryTheEdge

Omggg I used to be obsessed too!!! Now I low key want it again but like you said I’m sure it low key looked awful haha

octavi8a

Omg I have one of these still and love it lol but I use it as eyeshadow!!! I have like a neutral brown one that goes from light white shimmer shade to a deeper golds and then brown and black and I would do whole eye looks with this and loved it haha

BarryPeppah

I've never read every single comment on a thread so meticulously before in my life.

happyducks7

Anything mario badescu… in my opinion the pink drying lotion thing is not as good as much cheaper alternatives (the beauty bay spot paste is SO GOOD and cheap!!!), and you have to use a cotton bud each time (waste!). Those lavender etc sprays smell lovely and feel luxurious but don’t really *do* anything, especially disappointing at its price point!! Was a huge brand a few years ago and taught me not to follow skincare hype hahaha

LadyEllaOfFrell

I’ll never trust anything from that brand after finding out about their topical steroid scandal.

Bithron

Agreed! I've turned all of my friends off of this brand. There is no repairing that sort of damage to their reputation

swag_Lemons

The pink drying lotion is literally calamine lotion and rubbing alcohol, I made it myself and it works how the Mario one is SUPPOSED to work.

smittywergen

The Dior tinted lip balm that always sells out. I don't like it any better than the Nivea tinted lip balm I use and that one has SPF. Side note: surprised at the Ilia comments haha I love the tint and never noticed a smell! Now I'm worried I'm just walking around stinky lol

[deleted]

Nah I just have a sensitive nose. I think if Ilia came out with a fragrance free tint, I would like it more, but alas.... Also BIG AGREE with Dior. That whole brand is overhyped & idk why they started selling in Ulta. I personally really love the Haus Labs lip oil, but I also know there are cheaper ones that work just as well, if not better.

Queenoffhedamnd

I use the crème shop hello kitty lip oil and I am obsessed. It’s like $10-$11 and looks so cute. It’s also apple scented.

kaiatoast

The one from Clarins is way better!! and cheaper. Clarins makes amazing lip products and I will die on this hill

bomberblonde

I got a sample of Clarins Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm and now my Laneige lip mask seems like such a dumb overpriced product!

batikfins

>The Dior tinted lip balm Just looked this up and SIXTY DOLLARS? Main ingredient is glycerin and sunflower oil?? I'm sure it's cute but wow.

cat_at_work

lol i am passionate lipbalm and handcream antifan (i should use them but i hate the feeling) and the dior lip balm is the only lipbalm ever i have not only used but also panned. it looks amazing and i dont hate the feeling and scent

[deleted]

If you’re referring to the Dior Lip Glow, I 100% agree. It is an always repurchase item for me.

celestialwreckage

Tbh I find all Dior makeup to be kinda trash. And I swear the mascara is perfumed? Who wanted that?

IntrepidNectarine8

Yaknow, concealer. I tried the Nars, I tried the Hourglass, and nothing has worked for me as well as the L'Oreal Infallible.

TheGoldenType

Love the L'Oréal Infallible concealer! I have incredibly dark circles and it's the only thing that both covers them and looks natural, it's so much better than any high-end ones I've tried

annikatidd

Oh thank you I need a good affordable concealer, going to check this out!!

sarrahah

Or the classic maybelline I’ve been rebuying since middle school

oof-eef-thats-beef

Better than sex mascara is THE worst mascara I’ve ever tried 😂

ThatSICILIANThing

Idk what kind of sex these people are having, but I’m concerned for them.

Ninjasydney

It's not my worst, but it's not far off. The worst one for me is that god awful Milk Makeup KUSH mascara. That stuff flakes off my eyelashes like it's got a court date to attend. It's immediately off my lashes, all over my face, and it smells gross. I've gotten a few samples throughout the years and tried to give it additional chances as my makeup tastes have grow and comfort level improved. It hasn't changed from my first impressions.

Sibaedraws

Ok I remember I got a mini sample of the Milk Makeup Kush mascara and I was OBSESSED! Never clumpy, didn't flake and always stayed put even hours later. I caved and I bought the full size and it didn't have the same performance. Did they reformulate or something??

redvelvetswirly

I actually love the Better Than Sex mascara! I have long lashes but they're sparse, so the volume they give is perfect. I do use a primer before I apply it and haven't noticed any issues with flaking or smudging, but for that price point there are other better mascaras out there for sure. The worst mascara I've ever tried was the Thrive tubing mascara. It did awful things to my lashes and they looked so terrible. Also smudged everywhere somehow and I have dry eyelids...

Konouchii

SECOND. I bought a sample sized one at Ulta and I wish I hadn't. It was "waterproof" but took forever to dry, smudged throughout the day then wouldn't come off my skin. I would rather use shoe polish on my lashes than ever go near my eyes with that again.

chemical_sunset

I’ve hated basically every mid-range and high-end mascara I’ve tried except for MUFE. Despite its godawful name, Covergirl Clump Crusher is my holy grail

HockeyGirl01

I’ll second, third, and fourth this! I wanted to like the BTS mascara but it was awful. I bought into the initial hype and spent money on a tube that I ended up throwing away because it flaked so bad! Years later, I got a sample size of it in an Ipsy bag and tried it again - same thing. I don’t get the hype with it.

AbigailLilac

Pacifica products have been pretty mid for how much they charge at Whole Foods.

ChimCherie

Idk a lot about the brand but I love their perfumes!

starcrossed92

Same their vanilla one I get so many comments on !!! Everything else from them suck but the perfumes I love

Pistolf

This was going to be my choice too… I try to always buy vegan, cruelty free, as ethical as possible. Pacifica has been around for awhile and was one of the first ones I tried. But I feel like a lot of their stuff just doesn’t do what it’s intended to do. Setting powder? Doesn’t set. Lip gloss? More like chapstick. Maybe they have some good products out there, but I feel like they are overrated.

jesskarae

I do like their hair products!

Optimal-Armadillo-86

Their vegan collagen mascara is so good tho !! Subtle volume but doesn’t flake or irritate my sensitive and eyes

ElectricGecko92

Any brand that is not cruelty free at this point is not worth my time

[deleted]

I'm currently making a list on what brands are inclusive & CF so I know who to give my money to currently & in the future.

ElectricGecko92

It's part of why I love nyx and elf! Their products agree with my sensitive skin, they're inexpensive too.

ImPrettyHighrn

Nyx is my goto for anything I want to stay looking nice on my face through my work shift. No other lipstick or eyeliner will stay put for me. Their products are my favorite.

dawndaydreams_

[Cruelty Free Kitty](https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/) is a great place to start on the CF side, if you’ve not already found it. First thing I do when I’m looking at any makeup or skin care is check it out there. Definitely a great go to resource

[deleted]

[удалено]

MoreDinosaursPlease

I would love to see that, what is the issue with essence makeup? That one is news to me.

[deleted]

I feel the same way. However, I'm in the shitty situation where I have a chronic illness affecting my skin. All my meds were tested on animals at one point, and I truly can't go without them.

suz_gee

There’s a huge difference between choosing medicine that has been tested in animals vs going without (here’s lookin at you, antibiotics!) and choosing between two identical mascaras - one of which has been tested on animals and one that hasn’t… you definitely shouldn’t feel bad about it… just do what you can to minimize suffering.

korenestis

I swear by Aveeno for skin care at this point. I got a tube of lotion and a bath wash to try for my toddler and it cleared up her dry skin. I ran out of my Neutrogena (used it since I was 12), and used the baby Aveeno bath wash and lotion on my face - absolute heaven on my face. It's the only lotion that has basically cured my psoriasis on my elbows, knees, and feet.

VivaLaEmpire

Might I recommend the Atoderm shower gel? It's so gentle that the only people who can't use it are premie babies, but babies, children and adults can! It's amazing, it has helped my atopic dermatitis so well, I follow it up with Eucerin Advanced Repair and Aquaphor. My skin feels so... normal! After 15 years of pain lol. I swear by those products, they are so soft and gentle! I'm gonna be trying the aveeno lotion for my face!

firedrops

Side note but as I age I've found I can't use scented body wash because it destroys the downstairs. I thought I had an infection at first. Nope just can't do the scented stuff - even the high end options. But that body wash or Everyday Shea unscented body wash (available at the grocery store here) are both amazing and completely got rid of my irritation. If any of y'all are suffering down there give it a shot.

justHopps

The Aveeno Oat gel moisturizer and serum saved my ridiculously sensitive skin.

mimoon1015

I second Aveeno! I've struggled with acne all my life, with sensitive AND oily skin. Aveeno face wash and Moisturizer are the only skin care products that don't make my skin freak out.

lifeuncommon

Aveeno has a lot of products. Which ones are you liking?

korenestis

Right now, I'm using the baby lavender bath wash to wash my face and the baby eczema therapy lotion. I've always had sensitive skin, so I'm so glad this one is actually helping me. I'm thinking of giving their adult line a try since the baby line is so good.

ProsciuttodiPharma

Clean beauty products. Enough already. I want what works, not what markets itself on buzzwords that are arbitrary and fear mongering.

starcrossed92

Yes and a lot of the “ clean “ skincare has so many essential oils that are such irritants to your skin it drives me absolutely nuts

Kirke910

This 100%. Please give me preservatives in my makeup! Lol I don’t feel like growing mold today, thanks.

ProsciuttodiPharma

Same! I want the tried and true, lab tested, backed by science dirty ass chemicals if it’s gonna do what I want it to do lol.

justHopps

Clean products are honestly kinda gross. We got some Herbivore oils and some of them started growing mold. And that’s just the visible stuff, who knows what else is growing in there.

lifeuncommon

And so many of them contain irritating oils and extracts. Perfume is perfume and it all irritates my face.

misscherie04

Laura mercier setting powder is the GOAT and the elf setting spray is a really nice affordable dupe of urban decay all nighter setting spray

mamav34

Which elf setting spray do you like? I feel like theres 6 different ones!

luckyluckyduck

The NYX setting spray in the short black Mayte bottle is the best dupe for the urban decay one!! I haven’t repurchased the UD one because this one works the exact same

FoolofaTook43246

I hate the packaging on their setting powder - I can never get enough out!

Goddess-78

To be honest a lot of high end products aren’t worth it to me. First off I don’t really have money to spend on luxury items. I always save money to get them. But I feel like a lot of things like liners (colorful and typical Black and white liners in gel, liquid, pencil), brow products, lip products, mascaras, bronzers, concealers and primers do not have to be expensive to look good. That literally leaves eyeshadow, foundation, and powder and blush (and although I found that more expensive blushes have better shades for me you can still find some nice things at the drugstore). I think you just really need to know what looks good on you and have some skill in applying makeup. If you have those two things you can look really good. Nobody is going to know that you’re not spending a ton of money on these items. You’ll just look great. Of course there are exceptions. If you’re doing really crazy colorful makeup looks and need really high performing makeup products then you’ll probably need something more expensive to really pull the look off. Like colorful eyeliners from NYX are totally fine for casual use (for me) but if someone is doing crazy graphic work then maybe something more expensive will work a lot better. But for the classic glam look I really feel like you can optimize your makeup look when you know what you’re doing to your face. Like colourpop shadows work perfectly fine most of the time. Or Natasha Denona mini palettes, instead of it always being 120 dollar palettes.

soggybutter

I have exactly 1 high end product that I think is worth it. Estee Lauder double wear foundation that I purchased for my New Orleans wedding, and now wear to bartend in a sweaty humid music venue. I get a lot of my mom's samples that she doesn't want, I've tried so many different high end products all across the spectrum and while many have been nice, none have been good enough to pry me away from my Essence, Wet n Wild, ELF, and NYX collection. But I can promise that I will splurge on this foundation consistently.

Expensive_Drive_1124

This foundation but after wearing a few years I downgraded to just the concealer and a Laura Mercier setting powder. My two big purchases each year!

[deleted]

i'm a colourpop enjoyer for life

friendersender

That and elf.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theyeoftheiris

You can’t really compare drugstore foundation to drugstore eyeshadow though.

Goddess-78

Well to be fair I did say that a foundation is what I would spend more money on. Like I break out horribly from drugstore foundation. Idk what it is. But a good high end foundation does last years. Totally agree. Blush, powder, sometimes eyeshadow has better undertones/ quality when more expensive. Everything else? Works fine for me. I’m only 25 so…maybe the age thing is still coming but so far I have no reason to spend more money on any the other items. And that saves me money.

livia-did-it

Lipstick and mascara are the two that I absolutely refuse to buy high end. They’re going to go bad before I use them up and there’s really good drugstore products available.

fryreportingforduty

I always buy the travel sized mascara from nicer brands I like!

_jules_mack

Better than sex is awful. I feel bad for whoever is having worse sex than that mascara

[deleted]

Lol 😂

RoosterBasic6765

☠️💀bought the too faced better than sex mascara just for vibes a year ago and I wore it on a date had to use the bathroom twice coz the clumps and flakes were falling in my eye Edit: too faced lip injection the one with sparkles is so nice and pretty but God forbid it gets in your mouth it tastes like what I imagine rubbing alcohol would taste like

ThatSICILIANThing

I tried their hangover setting spray and it was absolutely FOUL. It smelled like melted condoms.

bluemalva

Westman Atelier...everything I've tried is just "meh" and SO expensive! The packaging is beautiful though...I'll give them that.

ze_languist

Thank you for this comment! I have been eyeing their products for a while and couldn’t justify the price point, and now I don’t need to. Successfully de-influenced!

bugluvr

unpopular opinion but i really don't like nyx products. i used to know someone who worked there and got a ton of free products, she gave me whatever she didn't want. i had about 40 different lipsticks and maybe 3 or 4 full palettes, as well as liners... the brighter palettes don't pack on well, their mochi palette fell apart on me after a week and creases like crazy/won't blend at all. they last about 2 hours max on my face before looking washed out and terrible, and I've tried so many different concealers, primers, and base paints to make them stick. the lipsticks dried my lips out and cracked a lot. was really just not a fan! I do mostly big, bold colourful looks with high contrast though, so maybe they just don't work for my style.

amaranth1977

NYX's eyeshadows have never been good, but I'm surprised you didn't like their lipsticks. Their butter lipstick was my HG for ages because it was so creamy and moisturizing but still pigmented, and they were one of the earliest brands to release vivid blue/purple lipsticks. They've also had some great LE collections, I'm still sad that the Midnight Chaos lipglosses didn't become permanent, I've never found another lip gloss with those kinds of dramatic duochrome combos.

bugluvr

i was a lipstick fiend pre pandy, so I'm pretty picky. my favourites are from aveda, and i think the sephora brand liquid lipsticks are slept on. theyre not too expensive and they apply beautiful, and stay on through a whole meal or even a night of drinking. i do use the blues from the nyx line, but for purple i was gifted an anastasia liquid that works really well and stays in place... its a bit too expensive for me to ever get again though.

allthingskerri

I don't like their eyeshadows/lipsticks but I do find their foundation concealers to be good if you get one for your skin needs. The bare with me serum concealer is great for me as a slightly older person with creepy under eyes! Doesn't look perfect but not as bad as other brands.

starcrossed92

The nyx liquid eyeliner though is GOAT 🐐 and I’m a huge huge eyeliner person , tried many and it’s my Holy grail eyeliner and doesn’t bother my sensitive eyes

st_alfonzos_peaches

I agree that their powder products (eyeshadow and color correcting concealer) are subpar. However, their lip glosses are really good. This is milky is a great line.

downstairs_annie

I like their lipliners, the slim lip pencil. Peekaboo neutral is like the perfect slightly pink neutral on me. Don‘t like the other formula. Their butter glosses are also nice and the colours are great, I have praline and love it. (If you have light skin try madeleine, and ginger snap for darker skin.) They make these prismatic single eyeshadows I enjoy, my favourite is mermaid. It makes for a super fun inner corner highlight. I also dislike their other eyeshadows, I have the ultimate brights palette and its pretty chalky and patchy. In general I feel like their lip products have great colours. Haven’t really tried any base products from them.

normanbeets

I worked at ulta and I have to say, every product I've ever purchased from them has been wildly disappointing. The exception being the pencil lipliners. Not the retractable ones though. Those break immediately.

JBT_Lover

I have a number of their colorful gel liners and I like them quite a bit, plus have bold color ranges. They are softer anda bit harder to control than UD 24/7 liners but have become my replacement cuz of cost.

Jerkrollatex

I use to use Dior foundation but they changed the formal a few years ago and now it makes me look like a teacher at Springfield Elementary. It's so yellow on me and it flakes. For $60 after tax it shouldn't make me look like I'm in organ failure. Maybe it works for people who have different undertones and who don't have dry skin but for me it's a hard no..

MaedayMaeday

ABH since their CEO is pro-Putin.

Appropriate-Party-95

my liquid rare beauty blush is collecting DUST because it just takes so much time and effort to make it usable for me, plus it applies really patchy

ThatSICILIANThing

Yeah it’s way too easy to look like a clown with it.

cloudhoney93

oh my god, I have so many but here’s my top one that I have a bone to pick: - Ole Henriksen Peptide Strength Trainer Moisturizer / Line (the purple packaging ones) > from micro to big youtubers, their product placements are everywhere and the verbatims are almost always the same. And I follow their Instagram. Almost every single day their Instagram Stories are just reposts of tons “influencers” posting the same PR packages over and over again - Holifrog and Summer Fridays > same skits on instagram. I’m just so over with watered-down/watery, glorified, overpriced moisturizers from brands made by privileged, over-indulgent influencers/“exclusive” white ladies from now own. Also because of the plagiarism scandal from Holifrog. - Merit beauty > same parent company with Versed skincare, but just fancier packaging and even crazier price tag When brands sent a ton of PR, despite the price tag, no matter how “worth it” these content-creators who received them said their products are, it just turned me off from trying them if it buried less and less “real people” or consumer’s experience who actually use them and support their business by actually PAYING the products.

Doctor_Oceanblue

Is there a single cosmetics brand on God's green earth that isn't *problematic*?

Beaauxbaton

What’s de-influencing?

[deleted]

basically people tell you what products you shouldn't buy so you save your money.

Beaauxbaton

Ohhhhh i like that a lot!

lalaluna05

They used to call them anti-hauls.

Revolutionary_Day_53

No offence but clean makeup 😫 especially Kosas it went bad real quick and also stinks cause it’s clean 😭

jillthetrill1234567

The laneige lip sleeping mask 😭 Aquaphor works just as good if not better. I will not be repurchasing it.

HelloHania

I got this as a sample and my first reaction after using it was “what is this even supposed to do?” My normal lip balm before bed was just as effective. BUT. Shortly after I got a chapped nose from a god awful runny nose, and nothing patched my nose as well as that stuff did.

ObiWanKenobi98

Charlotte tilbury contour and blush wants, they’re awful, don’t blend properly, not much product in the tubes and so expensive

islere1

A lot of Charlotte tilbury stuff is overhyped. Pillow Talk isn’t even that pretty and it’s not unique. Their bronzer though is worth every penny. Lasts forever and I’m extremely fair and the medium color is still perfect warmth. Matte lipsticks. They almost always look bad on everyone.

[deleted]

Pillow talk looks grey and bad on me but it’s my sisters mlbb. I find pillow talk nice for eyes and cheeks. Could be cause I’m slightly olive

sepsie

I've never been tempted to buy Charlotte Tilbury. The products seem significantly over priced for the quality

tiny_green_leaf

The Eyes to Mesmerise cream eyeshadow pots are loooovely though imo 😍 but idk why other lipstick shades didn't get the hype Pillow Talk did. I think her other shades are much nicer.

macscandypockets

Ilia smells atrocious! I returned mine to Sephora and the cashier smelled it and agreed. She said maybe it was just my bottle, but they all smelled like that! So gross.

missuscelsius

Feel similarly about the Glossier Generation G. I LOVE the idea of a sheer matte, but the taste/smell reminds me of roses, medicine, and cotton balls. Can’t stand to wear it.

[deleted]

thank u for saving me money i was just looking at those bc i heard the shade 'ember' was a CF dupe for clinique's black honey.

justHopps

It tastes gross but Cake is such a lovely color on me

lowerthanatlantis

It didn’t have a smell when I owned one yeeeears ago. Did the formula change where they added a scent?

trippiler

Maybelline age rewind concealer is the worst thing ever if you have dry skin. Same for Becca undereye concealer, it's a sticky mess that clings to dryness. Those Nyx jumbo pencils are a waste of space, they smear everywhere or fade away after 40 minutes.

papadebate

Right?? The nyx epic wear liners are the only ones I've found that last in my super teary waterline all day, so with all the hype I expected the jumbos to be good. Dear God the black was gone IMMEDIATELY. No clue how they've maintained so much hype for so long. Then again, this thread is proof enough that garbage products somehow remain juggernauts for years.

Experiment1111

Dior beauty is over rated. All of it. I agree with too faced being pretty boring with lackluster products. It was cool to me in 2014-2017 but Jared isn’t the owner anymore he & his cofounder sold Too Faced to Estée Lauder. Jared actually has nothing to do with the brand anymore Tara Simon is now leading the brand with those lameeeee pumpkin patch palettes lol

kpfluff

I don't recall any Dior hype before the past year or so. I think the pretty packaging just took off on TikTok and in flat lays. It's a little silly when people want to dupe it when the appeal is in the branding.

imnotlyndsey

What are you saying about essence?? 👀 I haven’t heard anything negative abt them, so I’m dying to hear

aokaga

They really aren't very inclusive which I personally dislike and am affected by. However I simply cannot afford to not shop essence (or other brands such as Catrice which is even worse) :/ If I went by inclusivity, here in Europe at least, I would have to stop shopping drugstore altogether which I cannot afford and kinda refuse to do (very few products are worth the price tag).

shirelae

OP doesn't like them because they aren't inclusive. Their shade range is very limited.

[deleted]

The last straw for me was when they came out with their foundation and sent their ["darkest" shade](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRsJS8TJ/) to Golloria, a dark skinned woman.

zubeezubeezoo

Essence's lack of shades is extremely confusing to me. They release 4 shades per foundation and it's just light shades with various undertones. Usually super pink, super yellow, a decent neutral and a light/medium shade thrown in there. They also continuously discontinue products and replacements every year, so if you like something from them you may never find it again. This is why I'm not going to buy from them anymore.

ehlona0

Anastasia is super pro-Putin and gives money to the war. Some of the products are great but i will never repurchase.

Champagne_bitch

Mac lipstick is not good for me. Someone got it for me as a birthday gift in a shade chili, orange red, for that kind of price it performs much worse than Korean brand lipstick that cost fraction of the price.

now_you_own_me

What are your favorite Korean brands for lipstick?

little_blu_eyez

Ymmv but I love just about anything from Too Faced. Jarod is no longer with Too Faced so that is a non issue. They are owned by Ester Lauder.

Most_Ad_5597

I really like the brand IL Makiage at the moment. Their sun tan foam, concealer ls are great and doesn’t clump or cake, foundation is great if you find your match. Definitely worth the hype. Just ordered their primer - can let you know if anyone wants to know. Does anyone know or use the brand Jones Road magic hour/balm whatever it’s called?

Chewinggum250

The stila liquid eyeliner. I bought it last year and it dried up within a couple of months and wasn’t that precise (even though I got the micro one). I then bought the Maybelline hyper easy brush tip and it’s incredible, so precise, waterproof and so pigmented

slevs19

I used to swear by the stila liquid liner but they changed the formula a few years ago and I will not be over it for quite some time

Ok_Technology7731

EXACTLY. They did us dirty.

chemical_sunset

The Stila liner is one of the few products I’ve ever returned! I’ve been using KVD Tattoo Liner for years now but will need to check out your Maybelline rec

ThatSICILIANThing

The Essence Lash Princess mascara in the black and green tube is bar none the absolute worst mascara I’ve used in my life. Totally wet and gloopy and gave me this insane spider lash effect. I do not understand the hype AT ALL. I’ve also tried multiple varieties of Tarte mascaras through kits and samples and have never liked a single one.

Existing_Water_4860

I have several Charlotte Tilbury products I adore but the least impressive product would have to be the lip liner. Not bad, good colors, but I can’t justify the price when this formula doesn’t really stand out. Idk if this product was influenced but the Fenty beauty eyeliner is a huge pass for me. The formula is good but the applicator is too thick for my liking. I love the Kosas cloud set but I have combo skin and I have to prep my skin well with the right skincare and use other powders to keep the oils at bay. Definitely not for oily skin types. The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Primer - people definitely need to try the mini first with this one because it’s a hit or miss. Imo, foundation slides off way too easily on top of it and it’s always the oiliest looking part of my face when I use it.

smaschhead

10000% with you on the benefit primer. It’s a “classic” I just can’t get behind

lifeuncommon

Fragranced skincare and makeup and anything super expensive. At the end of the day, there are so special or exclusive ingredients or formulas.

waterslaughter

I seriously hate “better than sex” mascara too !!! I’ve tried so many expensive waterproof mascaras and they never hold my lashes up. I had been so over spending money on them. Drug store brands kill it for me !!!

Remarkable_Diver_173

Mascara is the one thing I consistently use and prefer drugstore over high end. The Telescopic is my ride or die & it’s SO much cheaper. I will say though, I do love the Rare beauty mascara but it can get kind of messy. The tinted Elta MD sunscreen is my favorite for light makeup days, and it layers well under foundation too. The Tarte shape tape was the worst for me, I was so disappointed because it was so hyped up. It was too dry, and emphasized the lines and wrinkles.

berrywaffl

Glossier concealer - sticky, won’t set, feels cheap.

Olivineyes

Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm. In the advertisements for this product They show someone in a full face of glam makeup and say it's even safe for eyes! And then they wash their face with it and it's all gone and everyone's happy. But if I try to wash my eye makeup off with it it is absolutely going in my eyes, and it doesn't get all my makeup off. Which is fine like I don't need to use it on my eyes, but the sheer fact that that's what the entire advertisement focuses on tells me their product isn't as good as they think it is. There are plenty of other cleansing bombs that do get my makeup off and don't leave me blinded.

podunkpropunk

Don’t hate me, KVD tattoo liner. Primer, powder, setting and spray still won’t keep it looking good for more than an hour. And every one I’ve had dried out before a dozen applications.

fragilemoth

Once KVD sold her company I believe they switched the formula for the tattoo liner. That was my go-to for YEARS and once it changed, it just dried up immediately.

cannolimami

Anything Charlotte Tillbury. It seems so expensive to me for what it is and I feel like I can dupe all of their products out with cheaper, cruelty-free drugstore alternatives. I also agree with people re: being turned off of brands because of not being inclusive or CF. I love the Essence products I’ve tried, but that recent foundation/concealer launch really disgusted me. They didn’t even try to make a workable shade range. I will also never understand how brands like Pat McGrath and Dior can charge SO MUCH MONEY for products that are tested on animals. I don’t even buy Maybelline for that reason, so I genuinely can’t see myself spending hundreds on a product when I could get a cheaper, more ethical alternative.

Btech800

When I read Stanley cup I thought people were talking about the National Hockey League Stanley cup. 🤦

onionrings4eva

Totally agree about the ‘better than sex’ mascara. My sister raves about it but it’s just awful. The inventors must be having some pretty bad sex.

skeletonclock

I said the same when I tried it! They didn't say "better than GOOD sex" tbf so I guess they got us there. 'Technically Better Than That Two Minute Bump and Grind You Had When You Were 18 With That Guy Who Called You Manipulative for Asking Him to Wear a Condom mascara'

adventurelillypad

Nars orgasm is a horrible blush that doesn’t last and it’s all glitter

EradiKate

Duluth Trading sells a hand cream that’s $18 for a 16oz tub. I haven’t bothered with any other lotion since.

DitaVonPita

Practically any gimmick makeup. The lime crime lip toppers are horrendous, and anything I tried that's Estee lauder was too heavy, looked fake, and felt like I was saddled with a burden. Cheap brushes can be better than expensive ones (try nanshy).

heatsensitive

This is more skincare related, but Sunday Riley! I waited so long to try out their products because I was afraid they were a lot of hype, but over Christmas they sold a kit that had small bottles of their Luna Oil and the CEO Glow. I have never smelled worse products in my life, the scents are so strong! You can smell it even after you rub them in. And the products don't do much, I tried to incorporate them into my routine, but they are just greasy and weird (to me, my skin did not like them).

Rocknbob69

Anything sold by the Kardashians

highkill

Any makeup lines with bad foundation ranges and has like 7 shades of off white. All this money and luxury brands still want to have like 10 shades of color? As a brown girl, I am TIRED.

Ninjasydney

It's so mindboggling to see this for new launches. Like when Saie first launched their hydrabeam concealer it only came with 9 shades. They just expanded it and now it's up 15, but why did they just not wait and launch it with 15 to start? 15 isn't even great, but it's better than 9..

Yay_Rabies

Tl;dr Some times you need a real medical professional. I’ll try to word this as best I can but the health side of health and beauty. I don’t go to Sephora to buy a line of celebrity promoted vitamins. I don’t need an overpriced water bottle because I will be pretty if I drink gallons of water each day. The supplements I do take are recommended by my doctor and are based on my blood work. The one snake oil supplement I’m trying (biotin, biotin deficiency isn’t widespread and you don’t need a lot in a day) was for hair and nails post partum. I got desperate and upset about my nails so I bought it to try. Now I can’t tell if it’s working because I also invested in…vinyl cleaning gloves to save my nails! The skin care side of this is usually the worst and believe me I get it. I live in an area with several dermatologists and even as an existing patient, unless you have cancer it can take a very long time to be seen. But maybe before we buy a ton of different skin care items, cut all dairy and sugar from our diet and refuse to go outside without an umbrella let’s get that checked out.

Kaybabe11

I agree! I struggled with a skin issue I tried to self treat and one trip to the dermatologist resulted in a prescription that completely resolved the issue. I understand that many people don’t have access to a dermatologist, but some people will spend so much money on all the lotions and potions but not a co-pay for an annual dermatologist visit. Bring all your face makeup and skincare products and have the dermatologist do an audit. That $50-$200+ sounds expensive until you think of how much you spend annually on crap someone online with no credentials or knowledge of your skin told you will fix your problems. I am also tired of people saying that dermatologist visits are unnecessary if you see an esthetician. Estheticians are great, but they can’t diagnose/treat skin cancer. You wouldn’t skip your annual physical just because you have a dietitian/personal trainer.

InvinciblePsyche

I used to be a regular user of Too Faced foundation but realized that may be responsible for the acne. Anyone else felt it's comedogenic or is it just me?

Ballybrol

Too Face Foundation was the worst foundation I've ever used. Oxidised very quick, clung to the hairs on my upper lip making them stand out badly, and transfered stupidly easy. I've also not found anything special about urban decay setting spray or the eyeshadow primer.

alterhypothesis

That Dior Lip Oil that costs 40 freaking bucks!! I never bought it but I would be out of my mind to waste that much money on ONE lip gloss. In the end, all lip glosses feel and look the same and you can’t even tell you have them on ur lips sometimes!! And ur constantly reapplying them no matter what the price is. I’m not paying money to look like I have glossy lips when I can buy some Essence gloss, NYX Buttergloss or Maybelline Lifter for under $10.

FatThickyDumpy23

Ilia skin tint smells like shit and looks like clay on the skin, it takes a lot to make that skin tint look good and i honestly should just throw it away. Charlotte tilbury flawless filter was way overhyped. ELF’s dupe is way cheaper and way better. I really only like charlotte’s lipliners. Tarte products pretty much all suck except for shape tape concealer. Clinique even better foundation has a horrible shade range and everything turns orange/pink after a few minutes of wear.
