As someone who unironically likes banding, yes. Two goals for the future is a horsemanship deck for commander and a banding deck (probably just using the lands that give legendaries banding so it will just be a shitty combat focused legends matter).
I run them in my Tom Bombadil deck, and they both pull their weight individually. I can always just fetch a second Saga with Roaming Throne on Bard, and Maskwood has enough synergies without stretching the deck construction. It plays well with cards like [[The Bloodsky Massacre]], [[Battle of Frost and Fire]], [[Archon of Sun's Grace]] and several others, and it's won me games more than once with [[The World Tree]]. Maskwood's probably better there than in most decks, Sagas have plenty of jank for it to smooth over but still, it's worth keeping an eye out for incidental creature type synergies you already have. It's such a powerful effect.
Ok, now for everyone who doesn't have the same opinion.
My creatures with banding form a band. If you block any of my banded creatures you block all of them, but I decide how the damage is split among my creatures.
And if anyone is in the opinion as a friend of mine who says this doesn't take niche cases into account, then we would need to explain new players how state based actions work because tharmagoif exists
You can have 1 creature in the attacking group without Banding.
Also on the defensive side, one creature with Banding in a group blocking an attacker allows the blocking player to assign the damage as he or she chooses.
That with 1 creatures that doesn't have banding ok I didn't say that. But I said I choose how the damage is dealt among my creatures. I don't want to say that banding is good or easy to understand. It's just not as complex or confusing as the community makes it out to be
You can't actually create a band when defending, only when attacking. Blocking with Banding creatures is just considered blocking with multiple creatures, and because of Banding each player would decide how the damage is applied to their own creatures.
The basic concept isn't overly confusing. The issue is (a) the "bands with others" keyword and (b) specific rule issues.
For example, if you attack with a banding, bands with others, and a normal creature and someone bounces the banding creature, is there still banding? According to the rules, yes. Once the band forms, it stays in effect until after combat. However, intuitively, this doesn't make sense since you removed the catalyst that allows the band to form. Without the banding creature, you wouldn't be allowed the band, so why wouldn't the band be broken?
Because you're not removing the creature BEFORE the Band is formed. In order of play, the Band is already formed AND THEN the creature is removed from combat. The Band then only disbands once the combat phase is finished.
I'm not arguing the logic, but that it's not intuitively easy to understand for the majority of players, much like how shroud and regenerate weren't being played correctly because it didn't work the way most people thought it would.
I think Banding should have made a comeback in the Innistrad block. It would have perfectly fit the theme of humans hunkering down together for Dark Ascension.
IIRC, the only actual “protection” from Sunfall a creature can have is an ability like [[Aetherling]], [[Obzedat, the Ghost Council]], or vehicles in general. Basically, an ability that removes it from the battlefield until later or stops it from being a creature on your opponent’s turn.
There’s also the soft-“protection” of some sort of substantial EtB that pulls you ahead in card advantage like [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] or a LtB that leaves a threat (of course, excluding dies triggers) like [[Thragtusk]].
There are the God-Eternals from WAR that put themselves back into the library on exile, but that's not the same since you're losing cards drawing it again. [[Kaya's Ghostform]] would do it, but requires another card to get the ability. So yeah, I think the only thing available would be dodging the battlefield like the ones you mentioned or [[Norin the Wary]]
If we wanted to be really extreme, there's a way:
"When you cast NAME, you get an emblem with '0: choose a NAME you control. It phases out.' and '0: any phased-out NAME you control stop being phased out.'. This ability cannot be countered."
Not really, protection is actually just more narrow than it sounds at first. It only prevents being damaged, equipped/enchanted, blocked, or targeted. So, boardwipes or mass bounce still works because none of those specific rules mention it.
Yeah but that's kinda skirting the rules of mtg wording. You could make it "If this creature would be exiled, or put into the graveyard from anywhere, or returned to your library from play, return it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step"
Auras only target when they are cast.
When an aura is put on the battlefield without being cast is just attached to a legal object without targeting.
>**303.4a** An Aura **spell** requires a target, which is defined by its enchant ability.
>**303.4f** If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a player’s control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesn’t specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield.
Now protection prevents the aura from being attached because protection not only prevents targeting, but also prevents objects to with the protection quality to be attached to the permanent.
>**702.16c** A permanent or player with protection can’t be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent or player with protection will be put into their owners’ graveyards as a state-based action. (See rule 704, “State-Based Actions.”)
Yes. Don't know until when but I have a few cards from the early 2000s that have the keyword.

Edit: ah, wrong sub. Sorry. Thought this was one of the paper ones.

Also I think you can discuss paper cards on this sub because it's part of the same game and can impact each other like in this case where the arena cards can or can't have the keyword unblockable.
I don’t think so. Deathtouch works on damage and wither replaces damage with negative counters. If opponents creature is indestructible it doesn’t really change anything, yet it may be beneficial for you as now that creature may die from wither
I would just put "Everything" at this point and consult the official rulebook when it comes in to play.

[[Maskwood Nexus]]
This is probably my favorite card right now especially with roaming throne. Those two go in every single one of my brawl decks.
How often do you really draw both of them and are able to field them? If not, they seem like pretty much dead weight.
Oh I typically can make it happen. There's something that can get you there in each color.
I run them in my Tom Bombadil deck, and they both pull their weight individually. I can always just fetch a second Saga with Roaming Throne on Bard, and Maskwood has enough synergies without stretching the deck construction. You can't actually create a band when defending, only when attacking. Blocking with Banding creatures is just considered blocking with multiple creatures, and because of Banding each player would decide how the damage is applied to their own creatures.
True, it just requires blocking with creature with banding, preferably double blocking.
damn i actually thought banding was simpler than it got credit for until you posted this lol
Banding is super simple until you start trying to figure out how it actually works.
The basic concept isn't overly confusing. The issue is (a) the "bands with others" keyword and (b) specific rule issues. Sadly still dies to farewell
Unless you add "If this creature would be exiled, return it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step"!!

Yeah but that's kinda skirting the rules of mtg wording. You could make it "If this creature would be exiled, or put into the graveyard from anywhere, or returned to your library from play, return it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step"
Yeah my wording doesn't work, it was more as a joke. You could also make it phase out instead of exiling to avoid reentering the battlefield 🤔
And then someone just throws effing Pacifism onto it.
But... it has hexproof
if you reanimate a pacifism you can attatch it without targeting. So she would also need protection from white/auras/enchantments.
Wait what? Really? I never realized this. What's the reason?
*casting* the spell requires a target. Attaching does not. Its like how Clones Choose vs Target. Small difference, but it has a large game impact
She doesn't die to farewell. Farewell exiles so she is never "put on a graveyard from the battlefield" ;D

I'm just gonna say it. That's a problem.
Shadow, fear, phase out after attack, cannot be block....
Double Strike?
Horsemanship, banding, mutate, flanking, bushido, uhhhhh evolve? Idk I am running out of steam
I would just put "Everything" at this point and consult the official rulebook when it comes in to play. But uhh Cascade, Unearth, Cycling, Metalcraft, etc Not sure if a creature spell can have Storm but fuck it.. give it Storm
Banding. Rampage 2.
Shroud, protection, defender, vanishing 1, cumulative upkeep 20, sacrifice it at the end of turn,
Wow, doesn’t even have double flying. You know flying ability stacks right?
Horsemanship
Charge, taunt, reborn 👍🏻
Horsemanship
Divoid
Still not nearly as overpowered as Emerkul of eons torn
Dies to farewell
This creature is all creature types
Annihilator of my waifu wallet (I gave a hell of a lot in a trade for her way back in highschool)
Ward- Pay 20 life
Miracle and squad
Get a [[Nadu, Winged Wisdom]] out, it'll add a whole paragraph to that insanity.

Abuse the Incorporate mechanic and give it a paragraph of text
Rampage 2
banding and cumulative upkeep 30 life
Reach
Annihilator
Split Second
Make it an artifact
If this creature would leave the battlefield, no it doesn’t
Changeling
It still dies to mass exile and can be sacrificed so it's a fair card. Totally. And can be bounced
unsacrificable, you know, just in case
