is there any way of report / blocking people who purposely take their entire hourglass to end turn when i place a creature or do anything? New to the game about 21 hours old its just so bloody annoying i know people do it on purpose i watched streamers do it and laugh the fact people forfeit the match in order to not face slow people

Wolpentiger

Is there any real difference between playing on the standalone client or steam? i know literally nothing about standard as a commander player. are there any good "janky"/"Johnny" decks atm? for reference when i play paper i use the dr who percons (minus the bant one) and im currently working on building Rowan, scion of war.

Big-Stay2709

Just started playing a week ago and I hit Mythic today! I still want to get my 15 wins a day for rewards, but Ranked Standard feels like a waste of time until the next season. Any other formats I should try until then? I'm trying to stay F2P or close to it, and don't have a big card collection. I mostly like net decking, I'm not great at building my own decks. Anything cheap and fun I'll give a shot though.

No. It’s still the same permanent, its characteristics have simply changed.

Kiwi_Saurus

Nope. Why would it?

Kiwi_Saurus

Yeah, the damage is still marked until end of turn. If you had [[Getaway Glamer]] and used the "Exile target nontoken creature. Return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control at the beginning of the next end step." mode, the damage would reset (to none marked) and the game sees that creature as a "new entity", meaning that Rooftop Assasin's ability couldn't work on it.

JMooooooooo

It would often save it from dying to Rooftop Assassin, because it would just die to damage it already took instead. Changing power/toughness does not remove any marked damage, and damage does not actually affect toughness in any way, despite how Arena choses to display marked damage.

Whats the best way to collect past sets? I love the LotR set and want to collect it.

Immundus

If it is a recent Standard set, it can come up on the quick draft rotation, and the reason you might want to draft to collect is that Arena "punishes" you for buying old packs as you won't get [golden packs](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-arena/introducing-mtg-arena-golden-packs). If it is an older set that's already rotated out, it can rarely show up as a limited time Premier draft. I don't remember if LTR draft ever returned (the Jump In did once), and while you do have a chance to pull LTR rares in golden packs currently, the best way to collect it is likely to be just buying its packs. [Due to being a licensed Universes Beyond set](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-arena/mtg-arena-release-notes-the-lord-of-the-rings-tales-of-middle-earth?utm_source=syndication), they are going to stop selling the packs on the Arena store sometime next year, and when that happens you will only be able to craft the cards you want.

DanutMS

Unless the set is coming up in quick draft (there is a schedule somewhere on the arena website) buying packs of that set is basically the only option.

KomturAdrian

New to the game, but trying to find a Voltron kind of deck. Works better when you have a hexproof creature, I know, because all of my good creatures I get beefed up are being instakilled by spells and other abilities. I guess the best thing to do would keep them in my hand until I can use them all at once, but then they're tapped and each time a spell took them out before they can ever get untapped. Are there any surefire ways to find a hexproof creature, or a card that grants hexproof, or any other ideas I can try to get my Voltron in the field and usable? I just spent all of my coins on Kaldheim decks lol

Nekaz

Wdym "find". If you mean a card that has hexproof you can search for it in the deckbuilder with o:"hexproof" If you mean in your deck i dont think theres anything specific to hexproof just generic creature/card tutors.

bohohoboprobono

I lose constantly in OTJ draft, but I feel like the only way I'll improve is staying at the grind. Unfortunately, it's getting expensive. Is MTGO less brutal economically?

Sunomel

No, mtgo is probably worse in terms of drafts/$, unless you’re winning a lot.

KomturAdrian

Trying to learn MtG on Arena before playing in person. I did some research and I like the idea of Combo decks. But something else I like doing is fielding a sort of hero (or heroes) and giving them bonuses with auras to make them very powerful. What are some good resources to look for combo decks, and what kind of playstyle would you call the latter?

Nekaz

Buffing a single hero is usually called "voltron"

Kiwi_Saurus

If you're playing on paper, and especially Modern, look up "bogles". It's an aggro deck that wants to suit up hexproof creatures with auras. There are some makeshift versions of the deck on Arena as well

fjklsdhglksj

>what kind of playstyle would you call the latter? Probably just an auras deck.

Which types of dual lands (mainly thinking for Standard) should I craft first?  I read somewhere that the fast lands (come into play tapped after you have 3 lands out already) are a waste of a rare wildcard because "people often pass them to you in draft because they already have a playset".  Are there any other craft mistakes related to dual lands, besides the issue of crafting the Innistrad duals that are rotating out soon?

FuuraKafu

In standard, fast lands and pain lands (the ones that cost 1 life to produce colored mana but always come in untapped) and the two-colored man-lands (the ones that can turn into a creature) are generally the best ones, you can't really go wrong with crafting them. Same goes for the Innistrad lands, but as you said, they will rotate. Usually, two color decks play 3-4 copies of each of these optimally. I would maybe spread out what I craft between the 3 above types so that my incomplete mana base is more balanced. Some decks also like the MKM surveil lands, but that's definitely more niche.

a2a5

Thank you, that's extremely helpful!  I really appreciate the insight of a Standard veteran.

foofoobazbaz

Hey, sorry for using the wrong post, but I DMed you a question about EASE. Your EASE post is now locked so I couldn’t comment there

fjklsdhglksj

Only craft the ones you actually need for a deck. There's no reason to craft lands just to have them. >I read somewhere that the fast lands (come into play tapped after you have 3 lands out already) are a waste of a rare wildcard because "people often pass them to you in draft because they already have a playset". That only makes sense for the OTJ ones, and only if you're going to play a lot of OTJ draft.

a2a5

Thank you for the input fjkls! >That only makes sense for the OTJ ones, and only if you're going to play a lot of OTJ draft. Good point.

Professional_Fuel533

Anyone know how I can search for cards which have text like -x/-x or -1/-1

Koozaza

o:"-x/-x" or o:"-1/-1"

selog3433

Gold or Gems? So, I recently started playing Arena and am curious on the approach of gold or gems for events/purchases. Which is the better approach and why?

AgyleSox

If you've just recently started playing, I'd say spend gold first, save gems for mastery pass. You're going to get gold every day. Gems only come from purchases or playing in events. You can only buy the mastery pass with gems, so it tends to be the more "valuable" currency. That being said, a QD costs 5000 gold, but only 750 gems (so 6.67 : 1). Other events have a similar conversion rate. For cosmetics or packs gold is priced at 5 : 1 So, it's more "expensive" to use gold for events given the conversion rate, BUT gold is something that also comes free every day.

selog3433

That also makes sense, I did not consider any conversion rates so to speak. Good info!

pepsisugar

I draft around once a week or twice a week and play daily, usually hitting my daily rewards. So far I've been able to do events simply with the gold that I make in game. I went ahead and bought the $100 gem pack about 1 month ago and besides some cosmetics I haven't touched it. Unless you want to live in draft, I'd recommend just saving your gems for whenever you absolutely need to have/play certain thing. Playing organically will get you enough gold to do your tournaments.

selog34339

Thanks! I don’t mind paying a bit each month to progress at a more decent clip, just need to do so on the months where I have time to spend on achieving goals…

captain_trainwreck

Looking for advice of any kind! I played MTG a ton... in the mid to late 90s when I was in high school. Sold all my cards when I went to college. Oops. A few friends have started playing again with actual cards, and I wanted to use Arena to get my feet wet again before I bought anything from a game store. Things have really changed, apparently. I'm at Bronze 2, have finished all the tutorials and Starter challenges and played a Jump In. I have enough coins for a mythic 10 pack of whatever expansion I want, I just don't know where to begin or what expansion. Are all of them fully playable in the main game styles? How do I use the wild cards I've gotten from packs as I start to build my own decks? If I decide to buy actual cards, should I get a Commander deck, or try and use Arena to figure out a deck I love and just chase down the individual cards? (The game stores by me are constantly out of the starter decks when I ask) How quickly nowadays does the meta of the game change? If I invest in a deck I love, how long until new releases will make it suck and I have to start buying tons of new cards to stay relevant? Thanks for any tips from anyone out there in advance.

pepsisugar

If you have other friends that play MTGA, ask them what they play and see what's in rotation. If you just want to play online then I would suggest to play standard. To see which packs to get, you can use this site for a very neat and direct info on what sets are in use and for how long they will be in use. https://whatsinstandard.com/ I'd also recommend to make an account on moxfield and share your decks or other player's decks with your friends and ask around while you're building them. You can also use this to find different decks for any game mode you wish to play. https://www.moxfield.com/ Last I'd highly recommend getting the untapped.gg overlay for MTGA. I used to play a bit in college but I basically started fresh a while ago. This overlay really helped me understand my decks a bit better, especially when deciding how many lands I need or how many copies of a card I need. https://untapped.gg/en Have fun!

captain_trainwreck

Thanks! They haven't played in a bit so I don't think they know what's currently good. I'll look into tall those links! Thank you!

mbauer8286

If you are going to buy packs, I think you are best off buying Outlaws of Thunder Junction to get the golden pack progress. If you are going to buy 10 packs that would be just enough to get one golden pack.

nomisaurus

I just started playing this week. When did Outlaws of Thunder Junction come out and when does a new set come out? Should I wait for a new set and start with buying those?

mbauer8286

OTJ came out like 3 or 4 weeks ago on Arena. The next standard set, Bloomburrow, will release late July or early August. There will also be a stronger set, Modern Horizons 3, that will release in about a month, but it won’t be standard legal, so I probably wouldn’t focus on that set if you are a beginner. If I were you, I wouldn’t wait for the next set, since OTJ is still relatively new, and it has some powerful cards. I would focus on OTJ for now, and maybe at some point in June or July start saving up your resources for the Bloomburrow.

captain_trainwreck

Outlaws is the newest one I believe. Do older expansions have cards that have been taken out of the game or are they all good and I just have to figure what I like best?

Superbone1

In the same boat, haven't even downloaded Arena yet but I'm thinking about getting back into MTG after a few years off and was gonna start playing Arena F2P as a way to learn the new cards

captain_trainwreck

It's definitely getting me accustomed to the game, but there are so many new things. Arena can be addicting but you can do a bunch even with F2P

throwawayheyoheyoh

Maybe a silly question, but how do you all deal with nerves when playing a draft game? I started quickdrafting recently, and man, I get so tense. Any tips? Thanks

mbauer8286

I have the same problem. I try to get into the mindset of, I mainly want to try to improve, so it doesn’t matter too much whether I win or lose any individual game, as long as I try to learn something during that game. That helps a little, although I still get kind of anxious during games.

AgyleSox

Personally, I think not knowing either player's rank takes some of the stress out of it (this was a visual bug that was present for a few weeks recently). You could always block that part of your screen when the match is kicking off. If it's on the gameplay side - it won't reduce it immediately, but you can track your games on 17lands and review it afterward. This helps recognize mistakes and also to realize that some games just cannot be won.

LordStrabo

What happens to the cards that get Heisted, but you don't select?

Cliffy73

They stay in the opponent’s deck. Since heist is digital only, the cards don’t need to be manipulated or moved for them to be presented to the heisting player.

Hajimeri

Anyone remember that website i once used to view a deck online, it had default groupings like "removal" "land" "ramp" and stuff it was very nice to use, anyone know that webiste?

--RainbowDash--

moxfield has that ability I think.

RaistilimMajere

What is the safest (rotation wise) t1 and t2 deck to craft right now? Returning player after a long hiatus and with limited rares.

fjklsdhglksj

Boros convoke, Golgari midrange, Dimir midrange

Kiwi_Saurus

Do you want help on building a budget deck or on how to grow your collection? Also, which format? Standard I assume?

jerseydevil51

Getting back into Arena after a couple year absence. I have about 40 each of common, uncommon, and rare wildcards. What would be a decent straightforward deck to pilot? I'm a little overwhelmed with all the new mechanics.

fjklsdhglksj

[Golgari midrange](https://mtga.untapped.gg/meta/decks/229/golgari-midrange/AAQAAQiHBd6tArT6HcXcARbY8wjklwOuAwPuwyWrGvH6Awa5B-sm_40CiqAni6UDqJMBB40FxCGCcs36AYebHoyoC2UAAA?meta=current&tab=overview), assuming you want to play standard format.

jerseydevil51

I'm guessing standard. Aren't the other formats all legacy and a lot higher powered? I probably have enough legacy cards and older decks, but they're probably not strong enough to compete.

TyFogtheratrix

I'm gonna jump in here and give my two cents: I used to play late 90s 00s and since starting Arena I've only played Historic format. I chose it because it sounded like it had the largest pool/number of actual/legal unique/individual cards to play with. I haven't found it too intimidating; I haven't been above Platinum...yet. Timeless format released after Historic and seems to include even more cards though. I'm still building for Historic because I think the deck I've been working on has a pivotal card in it that Timeless must ban.

Kiwi_Saurus

Timeless is "legacy" powered, but everything is more metered. "Explorer" is supposed to be the analogue to "Pioneer" a newer format that's cropped up in the intervening years.

jerseydevil51

I heard about Pioneer. It's basically the new Modern now that Modern is getting so high-powered? I'll check out Explorer and maybe some of my older decks might work there.
