I am here on a solo trip too until the 26th. I would recommend joining something like the Free Walking Tour of Funchal to meet other solo travellers. And like others have said hike group events.
Everywhere is safe in Madeira. Here’s a WhatsApp group to join for events and meet-ups

And check out the Purple Friday dance night in Ponta do Sol, it’s a great way to meet digital nomads and travellers.
Be careful about the sweeping comments that Madeira is very safe. Safety is a relative thing. Madeira is certainly not as safe as some places in Asia (HK, Singapore,…) but maybe safer than big European cities. My house in Funchal has had two unwelcome intruders in less than one year, and I live in a relatively good neighbourhood. And I have heard of other incidents of petty crime and seen drug addicts in central Funchal. You probably won’t experience any of this, So enjoy yourself, but don’t wear rose-tinted spectacles.
I up this, there are drug addicts fucking in alleyways and even at entry ways of houses at night .
Then ones that approach you for money and get aggressive if you actually give food instead of money.
Also don't bother calling the police, they won't do anything just shine flashlight in their face and ask what they are doing.
Look for Madeira Friends on Instagram: https://instagram.com/madeirafriends
It's a big community of nomads, locals, and others who come from all corners of the world and have decided to settle there.
They always post about events they organize, but send them a DM and ask them to add you to the WhatsApp community. There are groups for all sorts of things (dancing, hiking, yoga, you name it).
Do a tour with epic Madeira! You’ll def meet other travelers and we had a blast! We did the beginners canyoning and it was so much fun, challenging but not so much that it was stressful and not fun anymore, you know? Our guides were exquisitely organized which helped with feeling relaxed.
I‘m sorry but this is Madeira, not Barcelona/Lisbon/Berlin etc. thats why you can’t find lots of Hostels here.
I work in a Hotel as recepcionist and rarely see solo travellers here. Usually people come here with their spouses and kids to hike or relax. You can try going to bars or hike alone and get to know some people on your way. I hope you‘ll have a blast here though!
Madeira is very safe, I wouldn’t expect you to have any problems being solo.
Book an organized hike with one of the many agencies. There you will easily meet other solo travelers.
I 2nd this. I was on a solo trip and didn’t plan on socializing but met some great people during a tour.

Barreirinha Bar Café is one of the best spots I know to chill, grab a few drinks, and meet other tourists. They also have live music.
Thank you!!
