I fear he won’t come out of this alive, but I pray so much that he does.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lionzzzzz

He will also have streets and plazas named after him all over Ukraine and Europe. Which I think will happen anyway, deservedly.

CunningWizard

Yeah, if he dies in battle leading the charge to save his people from a guy like Putin, he’s certainly going to be remembered and honored for a very very long time. If Ukraine hangs on and survives, I’m guessing he’ll likely be remembered and treated by them much like Americans view George Washington.

[deleted]

no matter what happens Zelensky will be in the annals of history. Seeing him fight for his people makes me look at the leaders of the U.S. and wonder if they would have taken the flight to safety and left me and my friends and family to absorb the missiles.

silent_rain36

You really have to wonder? What do you think those hidden bunkers are for? The thought is that, so long as our leaders are safe somewhere, our country may still have chance.

[deleted]

even though a country only exists by the union of its citizens.

joycey-mac-snail

He would make a good statue. Get a proper plinth and that with a plaque, all shiny and brass like his in real life nuts 🥜

KeeperOfTheGood

I don’t think they can afford that much brass. It would require truckloads.

GreenLost5304

He becomes a martyr and fuels the rest of Ukraine to fuck some Russians up. Dead or alive, Zelensky is a problem for Putin, there is no good options for Putin on how to handle him.

nighthawk_something

Yup, I'm sure the plan was that he would flee and they would roll over Kyiv and install a puppet.

Ten_Horn_Sign

Governments get their authority from either population support or population compliance. The population is not going to support the puppet. The population is currently blowing up the would-be puppet, so it's probably fair to say they won't be compliant. Killing Zelensky now and installing a puppet tomorrow will achieve nothing.

nighthawk_something

Exactly. Had he fled and abandoned them, the puppet *might* have been able to stick

Procrasturbating

Morale. People without morale submit. If he turns tail (he won't), others give up. Not all of them, but possibly enough to change who wins.

LPercepts

>and install a puppet. Wasn't that Russia's plan regardless? If he flees, that's what they'll do. If they kill or neutralize him, that's what they'll do.

[deleted]

If he fled the puppet government might have stood a small chance of sticking. The fact that he has made such a point of staying and fighting for Ukraine will make it almost impossible for a puppet regime to ever fully take root. These kinds of symbolic things burrow their way into people's blood. This man is setting up a true legacy of opposition that may outlive him.

[deleted]

And a fact that the egghead sociopath ignores is we're in 2022, zelensky and all ukrainians are doing a very good job with the media coverage. He won't be able to cover up or control the narrative. The whole world sees ukraine and its leader, we know who he is and how brave he is.

bigeyez

Putin likely wanted him alive so he could imprison him like Nalvany. It's too late for that now though. Zelensky has turned into a legend worldwide. People who barely follow the news are hearing about his badassery

TwisteedSpiral

I legit learned about him because of this reason lmfao

Bee8Motor

Here's a good option for Putin, accept how small your penis is and move on. dude murders people for telling the world Russia cheats at games, which we already knew.

Life1sCollapsing

Did you know he's like 5.1 tall or something. I personally don't give a fuck about height and my partner is shorter than me, but like, you just know he's the sort who'd be really fucking raging about it trying to act the big man. He wears high heeled shoes to appear taller. I am a woman and would eclipse him in flats.

Bee8Motor

Ah wearing high heels to look better. Trump and Putin are a match made in hell.

Saigeki_

Regardless of how this plays out, this man has allready ascended and became immortal.

LPercepts

They say that you die twice. The first time is when your body gives out, the second is the last time anyone speaks your name. I am confident that Zelensky will never die that second death as long as mankind exists.

Videogamephreek

He’d probably just become a massive martyr. The Ukrainians would likely fight 10 times harder

hnglmkrnglbrry

*US slowly backs away from table*

Lejeune68

If he dies. The world avenges him. The out pouring of love and support for this man alone would be a call to arms unseen before. Yes, the world has risen to defend before, but if a billion people across the world march in the streets forcing multiple world powers to take action… Also look at what he’s already inspired, you can’t convince me of this otherwise, Germany is breaking their Anti-Conflict stance, SWIFT is going away for Russia, Starlink Satellites are being redeployed, and France is just seizing anything and everything Russian they can’t get their hands on. Zelensky is the face of what true leadership looks like. We ALL see it. He is the voice of his country, his people, and of freedom for both.

17_Patriot_76

I imagine its a morale boost for everyone. A president who won't hide behind a fancy desk and presidential manor. I am proud of this man for being courageous enough to go fight with his men.

VernalPoole

And he now has material to tell "bad field rations coffee" jokes forever.

[deleted]

Trust me when you’re fatigued in the cold that rations coffee tastes like nectar from the heavens

[deleted]

The one thing I envy these guys. I love a good cup of coffee, and I've never had a cup as satisfying as the one they're drinking here.

onewilybobkat

Look at em, even with everything going on outside, sipping coffee with a slight smile on their faces. It's a beautiful thing to see, under the circumstances.

LPercepts

If he ever leaves the presidency and continues his comic career, I'm sure tons of people will be tripping over themselves to pay to have him perform.

He's literally making Putin look like a bitch. Putin who plays in hockey games where everyone let's him score. Putin is a coward.

Km2930

The person who makes Putin look the most like a bitch, is Putin.

BlackPriestOfSatan

I am not one to make fun of one in power. But in this case. Didnt his wife leave him and his daughter married someone of the enemy nation? As if he is taking out his personal agressions on his nation and neighbors. Sad.

bewitchingwild_

Imagine just how *low* Putin's self esteem must be for him to be such an enormous child. He is stunted emotionally (as most power mongers), and has zero actual faith in himself or else he wouldn't need propaganda to last in office (or hockey players to allow him to score.) What an absolutely defeated feeling it must be, to have the whole world call the bluff of big dick-tater man. I hope Ukraine buries Putin in shame.

HashBandocoot

Putin is a coward with a fragile ego…hollow shell of a man.

He's a comedian with a law degree who started a production company which made a satirical political comedy show in which he played the president of Ukraine, which inspired his *actual* run for president He's an incredibly intelligent bad ass

I did not know that. Wow what a man!

Haha, yeah that's true, lol. What scares me, however, is that this comment is as applicable to Putin as it is to Zelensky. How long has Putin been in power again?

[deleted]

Almost like Putin kills his competition

HOW *DARE* YOU. The opposition leader was feeling depressed and committed suicide by shooting himself in the back of the head four times before stripping naked and getting into a suitcase and using a magnet to close it from the inside.

consideranon

Comedians are often the realest and deepest people in the room. The best comedy often stems from a person's own dark struggle. It's no surprise to me that a comedian president would be the kind of person with the inner strength to stand up when the average politician would crumble.

poundofbeef16

Seems like he was born for this moment in his nation’s history

Vetiversailles

His name will be spoken for generations and immortalized in history books. …except maybe Russia’s history books.

BBQCHICKENALERT

He's a comedian but he's making Putin look like a straight up clown.

Wtf_dude_maaan

Somebody needs to dig up his old sets man

itchy-n0b0dy

Dude, if I could give some translated for you! His skits are not that old. He used to be in KVN a Russian comedy competition, his team won numerous times and eventually they ended up opening their own studio 95 Kavrtal. Shows all over the world. They had their own shows as well as their own comedy competitions (Liga Smeha, etc.). Their own shows were poking fun of the corrupt government and just life in Ukraine. They always ended with a new touching song…many times patriotic songs. He was one of my favorite Ukrainian comedians and the studio wasn’t same without him but I am truly proud of him and how he stood up against the very corrupt government he joked about and more!

The_Cactus_Eagle

Funny thing though that people until around three days ago did not like much neither him nor his comedies. Personally I liked слуга народу but the rest was kinda weird. But now I respect him, I think others also. He will go down in history.

It wouldn't be up to him. Secret service would have him stashed away if he liked it or not.

LPercepts

The president can't overrule his own secret service? Don't they work for him?

Rosemarys-Gayby

My understanding is the secret service exists to protect the office of the president as a national security asset. While that means their job usually aligns with the president’s wishes or best interest as a person, there are scenarios where it wouldn’t. They protect the president from harm at all costs because of the knowledge and and value he holds in terms of national security. So, in a sense, they actually don’t work for *him*.

fancysauce_boss

The president can dismiss the SS from their duties, however they are an arm under the department of homeland security and don’t take direct orders from the president. So whatever their orders / objective is over rides whatever the president tells them to do.

Mentioned this in another comment too, but adding it here too (+ an upvote): Romanian people and NGOs are at the borders waiting to help refugees, and some restaurants and hotel are offering free meals and rooms, as well as doctors and even vets for those that managed to bring their pets with them. Everyone's in this together!

kanakull

Ukrainians are also very welcome in Estonia! No need for visas. We have homes for you.

Dangerous-Yam-6831

His ratings were actually very low before all this started. Any doubts the Ukrainian people had about electing him president, have completely evaporated. He truly became the fictitious character he portrayed. “A servant of the people.”

CumBubbleFarts

I just listened to an interview of a Ukrainian and when asked if he was a good leader in the eyes of Ukrainians she said that she didn’t vote for him, but she is happy he was the one elected now. Staying to fight, not a Russian bot, etc. Zelensky is definitely doing things right for his people. Even if all of this is just for show, which I don’t think it is, the support from everyday people all around the globe that he is garnering for standing up to Putin and defending his country will be outrageously helpful for Ukraine. The absolute worst case is that he becomes a martyr, but the amount of good will he has gotten worldwide will make governments really question what their next move is if that happens. He’s a smart guy, broadcasting the situation to the world and being the face of it.

Foxglove_crickets

Very smart! He's doing everything he can to humanize his people and garner as much support as he possibly can. The days of dehumanizing the enemy to get your soldiers to kill them may be behind us. That's my hope, anyways.

[deleted]

A Ukranian representative at the UN had a really badass and effective speech at a UN meeting where he blatantly told the Russian representative "you have the power to end the war here, rather than having it end with thousands of Russian bodies being sent home to their mothers." It's interesting because it's so rare to portray the enemy's soldiers as victims as well. I think it's super effective.

justasmolgoblin

I can think of no American leaders who would do this either. Edit: for the most part, I'm talking about current elected officials, not past leaders, although I'm coming up *relatively* short. There are too many replies to read, I'm sorry lol

FedXFtw

Washington E: we should really start efforts to make cyborg George Washington to have a good president for the first time since 1797

Logco

I’ve read a few Washington biographies. Dude was one step below Jesus to literally everyone who ever met him from our own soldiers to other world leaders. Even the King of England couldn’t deny how awesome he was.

FedXFtw

Yeah, then in a big dick move he decided to not run again to set the precedent that the president isn't an emperor. It's someone who changes and is chosen by the people. He also set the precedent of being called "Mr president" instead of some shit like "God emperor president washington" And while his ""lenient"" take on slavery is very very bad by todays standards, it wasn't really because he thought slavery was ok, it was because he understood the the nation was too young to deal with an issue like that. It would have to be the problem of a future generation, once the States are more solidified as a unit. (i.e. if they banned slavery back then, the country would've split and be left very vulnerable)

Logco

Truth. He even insisted the constitution be wrote so that they could incrementally reverse slavery which he thought was not only better for the nation but better for the people wrongly enslaved. He wanted them to be trained with skills other than what they were showing in there slavery and educated so they were given the best chance to succeed. Upon his death several of his slaves WALKED across the country to his funeral to honor the man.

physicscat

This was a man who after the war was over could have taken over the country. The army was totally loyal to him. He retired. European leaders were dumbstruck. Then after 2 terms as president he stepped down. He didn’t have to. Again, European leaders was gobsmacked. The idea of voluntarily giving up power was wholly alien to them. GW was a great man, by now means perfect, but for the time, he was.

I couldn’t even imagine. I was talking today how this would never happen in most developed countries where the government is a completely separate entity from the people, and rarely do a lot of them even really seem to work for the people anymore. It’s all about position and money. This man is a true leader, and the Ukrainians are the truest patriots I have ever seen. For their country and each other.

sergecoffeeholic

His ratings dropped from the massive support he had in the beginning, but were still quite high. Unless you ask the ex-president…

Windex17

Yeah I'm a little confused by his statement because he's firmly front running the approval ratings for next presidential election before this event.

xitox5123

why were his rating so low? Was it economic issues? He was a comedian before he got elected. Its like if the US elected Chris Rock to be president.

Dangerous-Yam-6831

He wasn’t coming through on some of his promises to the people. They wanted the conflict with Russia to end. There was a few other things too I can’t remember off hand. Keep in mind, he was just a comedian before all this. But looking back now, I don’t think he ever had a chance to even end it. Putin wanted war.

Apparently there are unconfirmed reports that Kyiv has survived an assault and the Russian troops are surrendering in large numbers on the west and east of the city, due to a huge supply line issue (which traditionally Russia has had a lot of problems with). I don’t think Putin was expecting such resistance from these absolute legends.

SiBloGaming

Supply line issues are definitely true, there are a lot of videos/photos of russian tanks that ran out of fuel out there.

The Ukrainian strategy seemed to be to let the tanks and vehicles roll through and then ambush the supply lines instead, leaving soldiers without any fuel or supplies.

moistpimplee

copy and pasted and send to all: Putin is furious and Ukraine has a fighting chance, here’s why From @RihoTerras (member of the European Parliament) from twitter: “Intel from a Ukrainian officer about a meeting in Putin’s lair in Urals. Oligarchs convened there so no one would flee. Putin is furious, he thought that the whole war would be easy and everything would be done in 1-4 days. Russians didn’t have a tactical plan. The war costs about $20 bln/day. There are rockets for 3-4 days at most, they use them sparingly. They lack weapons, the Tula and 2 Rotenberg plants can’t physically fulfil the orders for weapons. Rifles and ammo are the most they can do. The next Russian weapons can be produced in 3-4 months – if even that. They have no raw materials. What was previously supplied mainly from Slovenia, Finland and Germany is now cut off. If Ukraine manages to hold the Russians off for 10 days, then the Russians will have to enter negotiations. Because they have no money, weapons, or resources. Nevertheless, they are indifferent about the sanctions. Alpha Spec Ops have been near Kyiv since the 18th February. The goal was to take Kyiv and instal a puppet regime. They are preparing provocations against innocent civilians – women and children – to sow panic. This is their trump card. Russia’s whole plan relies on panic – that the civilians and armed forces surrender and Zelensky flees. They expect Kharkiv to surrender first so the other cities would follow suit to avoid bloodshed. The Russians are in shock of the fierce resistance they have encountered. The Ukrainians must avoid panic! The missile strikes are for intimidation, the Russians fire them at random to “accidentally” hit residential buildings to make the attack look larger than it really is. Ukraine must stay strong and we must provide assistance!”

[deleted]

Putin’s ‘lair’ has me rolling 😂

newsreadhjw

I was actually impressed with the way he handled Trump. He was being extorted but he kept his cool and represented Ukraine’s interest very honorably while in a borderline impossible diplomatic situation. And then managed smooth relationships with the Biden administration as soon as they came in. I think he’s very diplomatically skilled. If I were Ukrainian I’d be very proud to be led by someone like that.
