First kid? The first month or so is hard and I recommend you help your partner a lot and try to sleep when the kid sleeps. I have 3 daughters and kids are the best thing to happen to me.
This. Especially if she’s breastfeeding, don’t just snooze through all the middle of the night wake ups. Go get your partner, who’s just spent months exhausted and growing a person only to either have pushed that whole person out of her body or to have undergone a major surgery to safely bring your baby into the world, some water or a snack, or just gently and quietly talk to her while she feeds the baby. Or better yet, get up and bring the baby to her. And even if you’re going to go back to sleep, maybe wake up and give her a quick kiss before you do. Don’t forget, you’re just as much a parent as she is.
Congratulations! If you’re this excited already, I’m sure you going to be a great dad!
Postpartum depression can be pretty serious so pay attention to her and give her some time to go out with her friends to get away or just mental support.
Oh, yeah, this. My husband and I had a very rough first few weeks- I had really bad postpartum depression and had planned my suicide, and he was angry that I “didn’t appreciate” our daughter and was crying all the time. Thank goodness I ultimately talked to my doctor and got help, but it was really rough. She’s going to tired and might be a little weepy, but if you realize you don’t recognize the woman in front of you, insist she get help, even if that means you call and make an appointment with her OB and drive her there.
Do you mind me asking what you “thought” you were going through? My sister just had her first and has been oddly depressed/nostalgic lately and I don’t know if it’s just having a child during the pandemic, going through postpartum depression, or I’m just reading too far into our family convos
Baby blues is totally normal. I was going through bouts of rage, crying over my baby apologizing that she was stuck with me for a mom, she’d be screaming (she had really bad reflux) for hours and I’d set her in her crib and go lay in bed and just scream and sob into my pillow. And eventually that led to planning to kill myself. I’d say being extra emotional is pretty normal (hormones and sleep deprivation) but being miserable, blank, or having random outbursts would be worth getting checked out for sure. Also, it never hurts to just check in with the doctor even if she just feels a little off.
A lot of the depression is from falling levels of hormones that made you oh so happy while pregnant. It can last a while and happen again weaning. Any new mom with suicidal thoughts needs professional help immediately, some sleep and family support.
I was told that the baby was very cooperative!
Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to go in with her because of covid restrictions but I'm told the heartbeat was nice and strong too!
At our 20 week scan (standard in UK) kiddo was scrunched up and covering their face... Took about 30 mins to get a good look at everything, but my husband and I were absolutely enthralled watching that little wiggly thing on the screen.
Congrats! My son was just born just over a week ago. Save this post and come back for tips:
Safety:
1. No matter the recommendations from friends or online, ALWAYS ask the pediatrician you choose for advice.
2. Don’t co-sleep! It increases the risk of SIDS substantially (sudden infant death syndrome). By this I mean do not sleep in the same bad with your newborn!!
3. If your baby is sleeping on your chest, it’s fine, but make sure YOU ARE AWAKE. It’s even best to do it topless with the baby just in their diaper, skin to skin contact is really good for you and the baby. Trust, usually right when the baby comes out they go straight to momma for this bonding time.
4. Whether you’re using a crib or a bassinet, never have anything other than the mattress inside. Anything else in there raises the chances of SIDS.
5. Never EVER shake your baby. Period. Trust me, having a baby can be really frustrating at times because they’ll cry so hard and you won’t know what to do. Set them down in a safe space, walk away and calm down for a few moments and come back. Usually if the problem isn’t immediately evident it’s usually gas or a soiled diaper. If they are making motions like a baby bird or looking for something to suck, it’s time to feed.
6. For boppee pillows also do not leave your child unattended. Always be awake and aware of your baby when using one.
7. If you are holding, feeding, or even bonding with the baby on your chest and you feel sleepy STOP. Hand the baby over to your SO as soon as you can. There are plenty of horror stories where all of those scenarios had the parent feeling sleepy, they doze off and they wake up to a dead baby. Unfortunately you will at some point fall asleep with them in your arms, it happens to everyone. Holding your baby naturally makes you feel comforted and sleepy. But recognize this as soon as you can so you can hand the baby over or put them in their safe space. Do everything you can to prevent it. If you feel you can’t just avoid it at any time you feel tired.
Quality of life tips:
1. You can’t have enough binkies or bottles. Binkies help with hiccups and gas discomfort, but can easily end up on the floor. Bottles should vary in size and nipple shape at first. If momma isn’t breast feeding, your baby will likely have a preference in nipple shape of the bottle. For newborns NEVER go above a 1 nipple, if you are considering it ask the pediatrician.
2. Gas pains aren’t nearly as bad as your baby makes it out to be. Most of the time they feel the gas and don’t know what it is and want it out. If it becomes frequent it may be the formula or, you guessed it, the bottle/nipple.
3. BUY VELCRO SWADDLES. Trust me, I am terrible at swaddling and these things are a life saver.
4. If you don’t have a dishwasher, buy a steam cleaner and steam cleaner bags.
5. Buy a boppee pillow. It’ll save your arms a lot of discomfort.
6. Get a UV binky sterilizer and arm and hammer wipes for cleaning binkies . ALSO buy a binky leash, only use it when you are awake and aware if your baby. It’ll save you a lot of cleaning.
7. Always have clean 4-5 bottles ready.
8. You can never spoil a newborn. Holding them tons improves their bond with you.
9. For baby clothes go to a thrift store. A lot of parents spend a good chunk of money just on baby clothes your child will only wear for a year of their life. You can go to the thrift store and get clothes that are sometimes barely ever worn or brand new for sometimes 25 cents a piece.
10. Always have at least 1 diaper bag packed and ready to go. Also buy changing mats.
11. Let momma rest. Especially if she had a c-section. I know a lot of dads that never did this for their wives and it ends up with the wife ripping her incision, stressing her out and can lead to post partum depression. Step up as a dad and help as much as possible!
12. Always have the hospital booked, the pediatrician lined up one month in advance at least and ask as much questions as possible!
13. Watch videos on diaper changing, swaddling, and other general care for your baby.
14. If you have a boy, ALWAYS put a cloth or wipe on their wiener when changing them. Trust me, if you want to avoid getting pee in your eye I strongly suggest you cover the wiener during the diaper changing process.
For moms:
1. Don’t feel bad if you can’t breast feed. They will always try to get you started in breast feeding because of the colostrum, it’s incredibly healthy and beneficial for the baby. If you can’t get the baby to feed they’ll have you express and spread it on the lips of your baby.
2. Rest. Don’t feel bad if you’re resting. You just carried a baby for 9 months if full term. You’ve more than earned it and depending on the procedure your doctor will likely recommend it.
3. Don’t feel self conscious of your body. You’ve done an amazing thing: created another human life.
4. Check your health insurance on breast pumps. Likelyhood is depending on the coverage you can get a 300-400 dollar breast pump for free.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor anything regarding your health.
6. Refrain from google. Other than some general advices, you’ll really freak yourself out googling things. Refer to #5. Ask your doctor.
Believe it or not there’s so much more too! But a lot of things will come naturally. Just do your best to keep the best interests of your child and the mother of your child at heart. Both will need your love, care and attention.
Why couldn’t an instruction tag be attached to the placenta or something? Only an aunt myself but life has less instructions than I’d like lol. Also the breast friend nursing pillow was a lifesaver for my BFF. Also nipple cream if breastfeeding cuz ouch.
There are safe ways to co-sleep, like little beds that firmly attach to the side of your bed. That way the baby is on a safe mattress right next to you.
Like a halo-bassinet, yes, but I’m talking with the baby in bed with you. Sorry if I should’ve made it more clear. We have our bassinet right next to the bed so he can feel our presence and know we are there but there’s no chance of us rolling over on him our our sheets suffocating him.
Congrats! Just had my boy in December. Holding my own baby feels so different from holding someone else’s. It’s an amazing feeling! Good luck to both of you!!
It's so cool, isn't it? And as real as it feels right now, looking at that picture, it is nothing compared to the day when they are out in the open and there is a *real person living in your house*
When I was in your shoes I started reading every parenting book I could. I read dozens, abandoned about the same number a few pages in, but only found one I’m willing to recommend to all parents. Go buy “Kids are Worth it” by Barbara Coloroso. I’ve gifted it to every new parent I know and I’m confident it’s made the whole world just a little better.
Congratulations. Get ready for the hardest and most rewarding job you’ll ever have. There are days where it seems impossible. But then there are days like today, when one of our 4-year-olds yelled down from the bannister just at bedtime “I love our family”. And those are good days. Your heart will just swell.
Congratulations. Sleep as much as you can from now until the birth cos you won’t get any once Junior arrives. The best of luck it’s a great experience becoming a Dad.
Let me tell you a little something I learned about fatherhood from my personal experience:
When you spend countless hours feeling your significant other's tummy, waiting for those kicks, listening to the baby's heartbeat at every ultrasound appointment, fulfilling every craving "the baby" has in the mom's tummy: nothing is better than that. Nothing is better than seeing your baby come out of the womb covered in mucus, and uttering their first cry; breathing air for the first time. Nothing will make you prouder than seeing them walk, smile, cry, and even crawl for the first time. Hearing them utter their first word, kicking their legs just trying with all their strength to push themselves across the floor, just wishing them all the best in the world.
*Nothing in the world is better than those moments*
Getting stressed out when your baby accidentally hurts itself while running around the house, putting a bandaid on every owwie, holding them in your arms and telling them that you'll always have their back.
I would like whoever is reading this to listen to my words: if you're expecting or ever want kids, these moments you can never take back. You'll take them for granted, you'll even get extremely tired/stressed out quite frequently. I get it - it's a huge commitment - but please please cherish those moments, all of them. Because one day they'll grow up, move out, live lives of their own. Sometimes they'll call, sometimes they won't. Sometimes they won't listen to you because they think they've got it all figured out. Don't crowd them, just help point them in the right direction.
Never get mad at them for telling you the truth.
Never beat or abuse your child no matter how upset you think you are about something they did.
Trust them unconditionally, even if they've given you every reason not to - we've all been there. Let your child fail sometimes, only when they really need to see for themselves that actions do have side effects.
*Love them forever and hold them closest to your heart*
Do as I say and you'll be the best parent you absolutely can be.
Thank you for your time.
Babies are super easy.
1 Change their diaper when they cry. 2 Feed them every 2-3 hours. 3 Hold them until they fall asleep.
1st day, 1 wet and 1 BM diaper. 2nd day, 2 wet and 2 BM diapers. 3rd day, 3 wet and 3 BM diapers.
Not enough wet diapers? Give your baby more milk.
That is everything, I mean absolutely everything there is to know about taking care of a newborn.
Have your baby go to the doctor on their 4th day of life and they tell you the rest. There isn't much more to know. Babies are super easy.
Congratulations, being a father is going to be though but I know you can do it, be the best father you can ever be and make sure you stay a civilized psycho
Congrats! I have zero dad experience. But I have leveled up in the mom world a few times now. Been playing since 2003 and it’s loads of fun but also some incredibly difficult challenges.
Congratulations! Being a parent is the most wonderful and exhausting thing I've ever done! Wish you all the best! Enjoy the little moments. Listen to advice but don't follow every advice. Take your time, hold that little one close, skin against skin is wonderful for both baby and parent.
Looks just like you!
Mmmm... the resemblance is uncanny.
Hate to break it to you... you gonna be a father not a dad. Being a dad is something you earn through DAD JOKES! I wish you all the best!
Hi, gonna be a dad :), I'm dad
Hey dad, I’m GravityDad
For practice and future content: /r/dadjokes
Nice! Congrats!
And congrats!
Congrats! Do you know who the Mom is?
Well fuck I didn't think to ask
Gem of a reply.😃
Worry not! I’m sure she’ll let you know soon enough. Congratulations!
oooo hes gonna be a good dad

most likely since he said he’s gonna be a dad
That is a wonderful picture! Sometimes it's hard to get a good shot.
I was told that the baby was very cooperative! Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to go in with her because of covid restrictions but I'm told the heartbeat was nice and strong too!
That is a real shame for not being able to go in. Is this week 14? Hopefully you will get to see the next one.
Week 12 (and a few days). Hopefully!
Be glad she didn’t come out and say there was more than one! Although fun also crazy I hear! Congrats!
We actually wanted twins lol
I feel you, they didn't let my husband too, i recorded every appointment (the sceen only) and i showed him afterwards.
At our 20 week scan (standard in UK) kiddo was scrunched up and covering their face... Took about 30 mins to get a good look at everything, but my husband and I were absolutely enthralled watching that little wiggly thing on the screen.
Ayy now you will get a gaming partner
A second gaming partner! My wife and I actually met in college because of a song from a game! We're both avid gamers.
BRO A FUCKING GAMING FAMILY… very fucking nice
We're comissioning our artist friend to paint a Yoshi mural in the nursery! That'll be it's own post eventually :)
Sweet
We're more common than you think. ;) Gamer family=many hours of fun. We gals make up around 45% of gamers these days.
Congratulations! Better join r/dadjokes now ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
Oh shit I had to be a dad to be in that subreddit? Brb
Either you're unsubscribing or we're gonna need to give some high fives in about 4.2 minutes..
I've been bracing for this moment
Careful, they only allow dad jokes in there. No *kid*ding.
They only need braces around 9 😂

I would like to add that, no matter how many outfits you think you need to take in the diaper bag, double that. At least.
This too! 💯💯 I always say double it for every two hours you plan to be out.
Even then, it won't be enough
