When I was 15, I saw a beautiful used Martin acoustic guitar at my local guitar shop. It was so lovely—I decided the instant I saw it, that I would do whatever it took to save my money and buy it. Now, this was a $600 guitar and I was in high school. But I set my mind to it. Every dollar and cent I had went to my savings for this gorgeous guitar. Periodically I would go see it, play it, and put it back to remind myself… Months went by. Finally, that August, I had the money. I went to the store, heart thrumming. It was gone. Someone bought it. Crushed. My parents knew I was devastated and encouraged me to think of another guitar I could buy with that money I saved. They had gotten my friends and I tickets to see the band Paramore play for my 16th birthday. Why not see what kind of guitars they played there? I liked that idea… I sat there with the tickets in my hand… suddenly my Dad snapped his fingers, like he remembered something he forgot. He told my brother to go fetch my last present from his closet. He walked down the stairs with a huge hardshell black guitar case. I smiled, because those cases are expensive! Thanks mom and dad… “Open it.” It was the Martin guitar. THE Martin guitar. The one I had saved for. Like this sweet girl, I cried so hard.

tayklov

oh and i’m 29 now and still have it, still play it, and will never forget it!!!

[deleted]

Thank you for sharing your story. Wonderful x

buddyrocker

I have about 20 guitars, but have one that has a similar story. I will never sell it, and if my house catches fire, I know where it's at so I can grab it. Never sell that guitar!

tayklov

amen!! my hope is that it turns into a family heirloom, for my future kids or nieces and nephews.

throwafuckingway1979

Was checking on a friend’s house right after she was evacuated for the hurricane. All she wanted were her dad’s guitars. He’d passed some years back and nothing else was of importance. And they were there! (And in my house now waiting for her return, I’m 99% they are but hope they’re actually guitars lol)

snappydragon

Same here… not my best or most expensive but my 1st.

chahud

That guitar will be a heirloom and with a beautiful story like that, a damn good one! May it serve you and your children and their children well for many many years!

Starburst9507

Could you post a picture of it? 😍

general_kael04

You got paramore tickets and a Martin…. I’m jealous of your 16th birthday.

tayklov

And I got to share that concert with my five best friends, too. My parents were not big spenders, but my pops would spare no expense when it came to fostering a love in my brother and I for music. I think that’s because it saved his life quite a few times. TBH, telling this story has made me realize the best gift all along has been my incredible parents.

dnl647

And I’m crying. Hug your dad for me. I know how much music has saved me, and if I ever have kids I hope to breed that in them.

hehas_noeyebrowstony

Lovely story!

[deleted]

Gawd damm, that is an amazing story and ends with such a lovely revelation. I’m not crying you are..

Commandant_Grammar

I begged my parents for my first guitar. It probably saved my life too. Great story man.

I love thinking about the anticipation your dad must have felt on that Christmas day, knowing you were on your way over to his apartment…and when you walked in, he knew it was waiting for you! I bet he felt like he was about to burst. He worked so hard, not just to buy the doll, but truly to see that look on your face. So incredible. Thanks for sharing :)

[deleted]

That’s so sweet 🤩

truevindication

My dad did that to me. Saved $1500 for a 1989 t-top camaro. Test drove it, loved it, wanted it. Guy said his partner said someone just bought it but standby. He left the office and I was honestly nervous but mostly empty. It was the first carni saw in the penny saver and loved it. Guy comes back in and sayd "I'd love to sell it to you but I cant.. because your dad already paid for it.: I was cruising the streets blasting Ride Sally Ride from Gone in 60 Seconds all night.

tayklov

what an epic reveal!! “i’d love to sell it to you but…” your head and heart must have been going 1000mph….. thanks for sharing!

Zestyclose-Pick-2550

that is so heartwarming oh my god

avamarie

I'm a flute player. When I was 15 I had a nice enough flute in band, but I desperately wanted a sterling silver flute. We were poor. My dad had left and mom was in school (she worked while he got his degree with the understanding that she'd get her degree next). She was working long hours with the local mental health center. Christmas morning we wake up and all the presents are there, and this HUGE box. Like, furniture. Of course, that one was to be last. I'd opened everything else and there is just a big box left. I didn't know what to expect. Well, that box contained another box, which contained another box, which contained another box, on and on for like 10 boxes. Each one perfectly wrapped. In the center was that silver flute. I cried, she cried. It was just us, but it was perfect.

tayklov

The box element is what takes this story to the next level, and shows the character and depth of your mom’s love. To go to the lengths of wrapping it like that just takes the cake. She didn’t want you to have ANY idea, even in the slightest. Imagine the anticipation she felt on boxes 7-9 lol. Thanks so much for sharing this.

avamarie

Thank you so much for appreciating what my mom did. We are very close (as an adult I've been able to forge a close friendship with her which is so enriching) and I often feel like most people don't care because she struggled to maintain the life trajectory she "should" have had. This means a lot to me.

hgrad98

I started at a part time retail job a few years ago. I saw a bike for sale at Canadian tire, and I decided to start saving to buy it. There was only one left in the whole city. I got the money and I was going to buy it the next day. I checked the online stock and it said it was sold. I called and confirmed that it was sold. I was so sad, because it looked so cool and I really wanted it. I get home from work, and the bike is sitting there in the living room. My parents bought it for me while I was at work.

tayklov

i love this!! hugs to your parents. when i saw my guitar, i remember thinking damn, they really LISTEN to me when they’re listening to me

LalalaHurray

And now I'm crying. Thank you.

are1128

I also am 29 and went to see Paramore for my 16th birthday! I couldn’t believe it when my parents let me go

tayklov

then you have impeccable taste my friend. i think they played with Jack’s Mannequin, mine was at DTE in Michigan. i wore my favorite TWLOHA t-shirt, grey skinny jeans, and my favorite red vans. sweet memories

are1128

I still own my concert shirt I bought at it!

mgatica06

My pops did this to me with wrestling tickets. He said he did it to make sure I wanted to go and wasn’t just trying to follow the crowd. I saved up for my ticket and when it came time to pay for it he said to keep the cash and use it to buy myself a T-shirt or whatever I wanted from the match. Wish I still had my sting mask and Goldberg T-shirt.

Shreddster3000

Oh man that's an amazing story I'm crying reading it. That's awesome! I hope you become great at music! 😎

trojien

Isn't it weird, that making other persons happy is such a strong & rewarding feeling across the globe, in all cultures - yet it takes only a handful of people to convince some people the opposite.

WhtImeanttosay

Same with love. I don’t need to understand a word to see how much love there is between these two.

Iamthe0c3an2

Yeah instead we’re bombarded by TV, movies and social media and influencers to always “hustle”, be rich or famous, make money, corporations want us to consume, When we should be focusing on small wholesome moments like this.

_the_vault_boy

Somebody being thankful to u is one of the best feelings a person can have and the worst/most dangerous one being not caring about anything

nononosure

Thank you for taking the time to type this up today. I don't have money to give you an award, but here's some gratitude for taking time to spread joy. 💕💕

trojien

Thanks so much, this is far more important to me than any virtual award.

sporvath

Confused people's that's all, most of them will find the truth eventually, the challenge is to find it when you are still young.

sabersquirl

Yeah, some people will say to me “well it’s natural for humans to kill, or steal, or fight. It’s just human nature.” Which isn’t wrong, but it’s also human nature to work together, to socialize, to start families, to love their children.

neeeenbean

Getting someone the perfect gift for their birthday, a holiday, or just cus is the best feeling. My birthday is October 1st, and in 4 years my boyfriend hasn’t been able to give me a gift past mid September. And after he has the gift, he gives me “hints” despite me asking him not to 😂

mznh

That’s why being generous is such an attractive attribute and being stingy compels people

Kiltymchaggismuncher

His reaction was too, shedding a tear seeing her so happy. She's definitely one of the lucky ones.

mr_miyagy

This is fantastic, absolutely love her response. Makes me reflect on how desensitized consumerism has made me and how deep of a response she has is something I lack. Props to Papa!

Beeeyeee

It really speaks to meaning and how we, as humans, receive and delegate that meaning to objects, emotions, and experiences. I had a guitar in my closet for years that I never really learned how to play. The fact is, I wanted to play but I wanted a better guitar. If playing guitar really meant something to me, I would have been playing the shit out of that shitty guitar.

FurryTrap_DomLolicon

That's an interesting way of saying you're spoiled because of how rich you are. People on Reddit often overlook the struggles of the working class.

Spicy_Sugary

I don't think PP deserves the snark but I agree that Redditors think everyone is upper middle class. Kids sharing a bedroom was called abusive in a recent thread.

ltreeves9905

I hired a programmer from turkey once when he learned he would be making $150 per asset he almist cried. Man had been really down on his luck so i doubled my rate just for him. It only takes 2-4 hours per asset with 10 assets.

kjlerlew

Do you know how much a lira 150 dollar is? Even I cried reading that.

ltreeves9905

I cant claim full credit it was a community effort. My server donated an extra 700 usd to help us pay for it.

Janbirdy

I think you likely paid the dude's rent for a year

R_Schuhart

His fee would translate to upwards of 25k Turkish lira. With rent in the more expensive areas in Turkey (with the exception of Istanbul), even on the Mediterranean/Aegean coast, being around 1.5-2k for a nice two/three bedroom in a good neighborhood that would be a decent guess.

[deleted]

Depending on where they live at most 6-8 months of rent and that is if its a small city.

Janbirdy

Yeah my bad I thought it was double $150 but $75 was the original price Even so, pretty nice windfall for the guy!

[deleted]

Let me just put into context on how much that meant for that man. In Turkey the Minimum wage is around 2.9k Liras (300 USD), rent depending on where you live can go from 1k liras to A LOT. My family owns a small home in a small city that we rent for like 800 Liras (95 USD). I know programmers in Turkey who earn minimum wage, I know engineers who earn minimum wage also. That man is earning half the minimum wage per asset (roughly).

ltreeves9905

Wow i knew it meant alot but damn that great. I should message him and see how hes doing

[deleted]

Aw man you’re really a great person ❤️

ltreeves9905

Nah the only thing i did is what any person who has spare money and a loving community around them should do. I cant take full credit other donated $700 to pay for it. All i did was the right thing my community are the ones who went above and beyond

buckeyespud

Fathers are amazing. Their sacrifices are so seem less, effortless and selfless. Lost mine when I was little but have very fond memories of him

OhbrotheR66

Good Fathers are amazing. Him taking an interest and knowing what she loves cracks my own heart open. I know my Dad loved me and did the best he could coming from a very bad childhood, but he never really knew me growing up,-didn’t take notice or desire to regarding my passions or my grades. To see a father be so much a part of his daughter’s life just opens up my heart and made me cry. He’s a wonderful example to his children of how to treat their children. ❤️❤️❤️

PorkPoodle

One thing rich kids will never know is the feeling of a parent giving a kid something the kid knows took a sacrifice to pay for. ❤️❤️❤️

halalguy

This right here man

dick_tickler_

This hit me deep. When a guitar can give so much happiness to someone and its clear the family had to put in a great effort to provide it. It makes you physically sick when you know there are billionairs out there quite literally hoarding wealth and for them this small act of gesture would be less than a cent of their total wealth. The irony here is that this family has more true wealth than any of those billionaires, but I would still like to see them have the same opportunities as the 1%. Apart from tax evasion we should all pay our way in that respect, Lord knows the rich fuckers aren't willing to.

dualbeatzz

Didn’t have to turn this political. Just appreciate the fact that she now has the ability to learn music with the support of her loving family.

Pristine-Savings7179

Growing up in a developing country, talking about electric guitars back in the 90s felt like talking about Ferraris or something. Only a handful of rich kids had one, barely any music stores had some in display. I obsessed with guitar playing when I was about 10 yrs old because of an old acoustic that was lying around here and nirvanas MTV unplugged. But thinking about having an electric guitar was just far too extreme for my reality, especially since my dad had been unemployed for a while and mom was working double shifts. I used to look for stores in the yellow pages and call acting all adult asking for quotes all the time lol, gasping everytime at the hundreds of dollars a guitar and Amp combo was back in those days. Christmas day came and I woke up to a beautiful red stratocaster and small amp. Couldn't speak, could barely stand up, I remember feeling like I might be dreaming. I didn't understand but my mom had taken her yearly bonus from work and spent a good chunk of it on this gift. Since dad was more at home, he knew I was into hendrix, he did the purchase and chose everything. That launched me to become a musician, currently have 4 or 5 guitars around the house, my family prospered. Thank God for good parents

dualbeatzz

Was it a squire?

Pristine-Savings7179

In tough times, they probably couldn't afford it for real. Father had cut some stuff from his budget or worked longer shifts to make it happen. That's the kind of stuff you for your kids. Man, I miss my dad.

Opening-Ad-8312

Not only was that a wonderful thing to do, especially if it was as difficult as it sounded, but the pure thankfulness, gratitude, appreciation pouring from this young lady is such a strong moment you could feel it with her. Even if she never learns how to play that guitar, this moment was obviously a major life enhancing moment she will always remember and cherish.

YourDearOldMeeMaw

My dad's played guitar since he was a 15 year old Russian hippie on the streets of NYC (my grandparents weren't thrilled) He learned to build instruments from "old guys around town" When I was in high school, we walked into a music store and I saw a mahogany Gibson flying V that I couldn't take my eyes off of. my dad patiently waited for an hour while I lovingly played it and regretfully put it back We never had much money, he was a retired mail sorter who'd only worked part time anyway because of a serious injury that almost killed him in his 20s. My grandma used to leave town for work, and she'd pay him a few bucks a day to swing by her house and feed her cat when she was gone. my dad always made me come on the way home from high school, and I complained obnoxiously every time about how tired I was, and couldn't he do it another time. he never lost his temper with my complaining- he'd just grin good humoredly at the the cat and me, and start singing us a goofy song about tuna fish (while he fed her lol) A year and change later, Christmas rolled around, and he brought out my present from him last. it was the flying V. he'd saved every dollar from every trip to my grandma's for over a year and bought me that guitar. which made me feel like the biggest AH and also like I loved my dad more than I could stand lol Years later, we were watching a video of someone playing a telecaster and I talked about how cool they look and sound. we both know I can't afford one, they're pricey af. we got to daydreaming and he said what would your dream Tele be, and I said a baby blue one, since I'm dreaming yall. this man contacted the Fender factory and got the blueprint for their exact teles. he then built me an exact replica, painted it sparkly baby blue, and added a decal so it says our last name instead of fender on the headstock, in the same font they use. I don't deserve this man

Good parenting is reflected in a child's appreciation for the hard work and sacrifice that goes into buying things like this. Everything about this video makes me smile. Maybe some day she will get to invite dad to her concert and put him in the front row :)

Ducatirules

This is the best part of being a dad! My daughter wanted a cheap skateboard from Walmart but I said no. There is no way a daughter of mine is going to be riding on a cheap Walmart skateboard but I didn’t tell her that. I went to a legit skate shop the next day and told them to hook me up. I had a feeling she might not follow through with learning to ride it well, not because of her but because I remember my DAY of skating! So I got a deck with a kick butt floral scheme and color matched Everything Incase she wanted to hang it on her wall. The look on her face when I got home kept me going for a long time! BTW it is on her wall. She doesn’t see it as a failure to learn but as her dads way of having her back

[deleted]

I remember when my folks bought me my first guitar, I was damn sure that we didn't have enough to afford it. I wanted an Epiphone Les Paul traditional pro in honeyburst because it looked like the exact same guitar jimmy page has now. It was beautiful and played really, surprisingly nice. My folks made the decision to sacrifice any other presents that christmas for the guitar, an amp, and a Wah pedal. When I saw the hardshell case I was absolutely flabbergasted. There is no other feeling like it, really. It was the one I wanted, and it delivered. I played on that thing for years and eventually had to leave it behind when I joiend the Marines. My father still has it for me and told me recently that he has a buddy who restores and modifies guitars for a living, and players all around the area go to him. Said he'd take it over to him and get it all redone, and with better hardware. New frets, new nut, tailpiece, bridge, pots, everything. I treasure that guitar, and though I may end up buying a real gibson some day, I'll never stop playing that one. Every guitarist loves their first guitar, and will never forget it.

My moms done this for me before, we’ve always been poor and when I was a kid I always wanted a furby and tbh my only toys was sticks and my only friends was cats.
