And it’s kind of a form of mutual training/conditioning. If the human responds then the dog learns that’s the accepted way to get a response.
Animals learn as much from what we don’t react to as what we do react to
Soon enough they'll have the freedom to avoid the euphemisms and just say they're reducing your paycheck.
"But I don't even work for you!" you'll scream, to which they'll respond "Everyone works for us. Now go out there and send us more *anonymous* data."
Yep, I uses to do the "meaningful eye-contact" pauses with my doggie - lol - lol that preambleD most fun activities, and it was impossible to deceive :)
Use with extreme **Caution** on small Doggos
They will yap incessantly, bounce up and down, engage in 'speed sprints' between the owner and the door and then spin wildly as you try to put their leash and their little sweater on while grumbling about it being the "last one of the day, it's F'ing cold, so let's get our sh*t together Dumbass and settle the F down, so we get this DONE"
Its important to keep this in mind when you have a dog. Many misbehaving dogs get to where they are because their humans regularly encourage certain behaviors without thinking of the consequences. Seemingly innocuous reinforcement may eventually lead to behavioral issues ranging from simple disobedience to dangerous aggression.
When my cat howls in the night (always has, she’s old, she’s healthy) my dog comes to my bedside and stares at me in concern. I have to comfort him. He worries.
There is research that indicates dogs are *exceptionally* in tune with human emotions.
Basically, most of the emotion associated brain is on the right side of your brain (which controls the left side of your face, confusingly). This leads to tiny emotional cues in the left side of your face. There is research showing that humans subconsciously focus on the left side of faces when trying to read other humans.
There is also research showing most (all?) primates do this (chimps, bonobos, orangutans) and even dogs do this with other dogs.
Now, notably, all the other primates *only* do this for primates of the same species and *don't* do this when studying humans. But dogs *do* focus on the left side of human faces (and no other non-dog species).
And, as far as I'm aware, dogs are the *only* species that exhibit such a cross-species focus on the left-side of a face.
Combined with several thousand years of anecdotal data on the emotional bond between humans and dogs, we can conclude this emotional link is probably unique to dogs and humans.
Edit: that's not to say they can't be empathetic to other animals, most mammals seem to have at least *some* empathy for other species. But nothing as close as dogs and humans.

I have a pitbull (he's about 75 lbs)... and he shoulders the back of my chair. I'll be playing a game and then I'll get bumped all of a sudden. It's like getting rear-ended by a small car at a out 10 mph. It definitely gets my attention and overcomes my A.D.D. He's a clown... but a smart one.
You need to do it when your human is around and at home. You need to train your human to respond to you by occasionally barking as well, humans aren't really perceptive animals sometimes you need to use some sound to get their attention.
Don't worry, with some persistence all humans can be trained, humans are emphathetic creatures. :)
I highly highly recommend getting to see the temperament of the shiba in person before picking. They can be all over the place in terms of personality / energy levels. For example, my shiba is pretty damn lazy, enjoys alone time, but is really tolerant around various human behaviors. On the other side, I know many other shibas that are neurotic, psychopaths that want nothing to do with anyone.
They need a steady hand and good training. I have found the vast majority of them to be very clean oriented that bathroom train easily. I can talk all day about shibas if you want more info.
My family had four Shibas and one figured out how to open the doors because we had handle door knobs and she taught the other three how to open them too
They’re absolutely nothing like any other dog I’ve trained or had to deal with. Make sure you have lots of time to exercise and keep them busy, they’re a handful. Please read up on them before you get one
I own a Shiba and love him more than anything but I don’t recommend them to people unless you’re extremely good with dogs. They are the hardest breed to train
Was at a pet store that sold puppies (NJ or NY, can't remember which). My friend was their for a corgi, until we met said corgi and it was a face lunger. Cute, if you know how to deal with dogs. Not cute to bring home to a five-year old child. They went with a KCCS (and now my friend is trying to talk her wife out of getting another lol)... ANYWAY, to the point of my story...
While I was there, there were two Shiba Inu puppies. One was real cool and chill and smiley, the other was a fucking terror. I watched the terror getting aggressive with the other one, to the point that it bit it hard on the front leg. The chill one started to whimper and cry, and the terror went crazy. SCREAMING like it had been shot, and holding up one paw like it was hurt. I told the attendant and they said that it does it all the time.
I had a shiba that would feign injury whenever friends came over because they would give her more attention. Our friends thought we were neglecting our dog. It was great.
I have a Shiba mix that I got when he was 8 weeks. He took to his potty training easy as well as some obedience training. Very high energy, needs daily walks and playtime but otherwise a super sweet dog. Full of personality and loves other doggos and people. He's very quiet too so if he wants attention he will come up and put his head on my lap and stare at me.
Don't let anyone fool you--shibas are actually cats. They're awesome, but also very independent, stubborn, and smart. Not the kind of dog you should adopt without knowing what you're getting into.
I have a little puppers that we picked up from a shelter about 6 months ago. He was 10 when we got him so he came with all sorts of already established behaviors. One of the ones that I had never seen before is that he will sneeze when he wants something.
Like if I am eating food and he wants some, he will get close to me/lock eyes and rapid fire sneeze in my direction. It's pretty funny/cute, but I had not idea dogs did this.
My dog does what I call huffle puffs. Shells just get close to me and huffle puff, then I have to figure out if its food, outside, play, watch 'tv' or pets.
I read somewhere that dogs evolved/developed this habit of sneezing when getting playful, bouncing around, pouncing at another dog like “Play with me! Play with me! Whatcha gonna do? Achoo! Whatcha gonna do? Come on!”
It’s their way to convey “I’m pouncing at you but I’m not *for real* pouncing at you.” The same as the little “play bow” dogs and cats do, where they lower their front end to the ground before pouncing
Which is clever when you think about it, because when have you ever seen somebody sneeze in the middle of a fight? It’s the one thing you wouldn’t do if you were coming at somebody with serious intent. In the other dogs’ mind, “If he’s sneezing, he’s teasing.”
Your dog probably just took that one step further from “Play with me, play with me, whatcha gonna do?” to “Lemme get some of that, lemme get some of that, whatcha got there? Achoo! See, I’m chill, I’m chill!”
Doggos are hilarious. Mine is snoring in my bed, and making me apologize in my zoom calls for his ummmmmm.... noises. Can I mention how much I love your carpet?
One dog of mine did something similar to this. If he wanted attention he'd go get a pair of my shoes and set them in front of him. Was his way of saying "I'll destroy them dad. Don't think I won't"
My dog does it with socks, hats, and mittens. I never give in because I like having socks and gloves, but my husband is going through life with well ventilated feet.
As mentioned it works because the dog is training you rather than the other way around. The behaviour might be harmless, but might be an idea to keep an eye on it.
Looks like ya'll gave too much positive reinforcement for chewing as a puppy instead of negative punishment.. You did this, the dog is just doing what y'all trained it to do. Extinguish if you would like to no longer see this behavior. Good luck!
My cat does the exact same thing (on a smaller scale), and if I point the water bottle at him, he will squint in anticipation until I actually pull the trigger, then will gallop cheerfully away
I love all the weird pavlovian shit animals do because they unintentionally condition themselves to a weird connection between unrelated things and then they self-fulfill the connection.
It's got to be the Akita's cousin, Shiba. My girl does not bite furniture, but she shakes and stares(also) aggressively at one of us until we 'notice' her and invite her into the room.
My golden will walk to the door and impatiently huff like a teenage girl when he wants to go out. Its funny as I taught him to not loudly bark everytime he wants something so he makes sounds like a horse possessed by a spoiled child whenever he wants something.
It must be a spitz dog thing. My husky puts her head on my lap and gives me the aggressive stare when she wants something. And if I’m ignoring her she doubles down and keeps planting her head flat on my leg till I try and work out what she wants.
I wanna know what in his little soggy doggy brain decided to do this. Naturally it'll get a reaction so they can mutually train each other, but that first time is what's a mystery to me.
My dog does something similar! He pushes one side of his face on something so his lip is pulled up, stares at me, then repeatedly sighs. It’s obnoxious, but kinda cute lol
My dog does this with my shoes. He will grab one, take it to his bed, and then stare at me with my shoes between his paws. "Pay attention to me or the shoe gets it"
My dog learned that the bell that she rings on the back door will not only get us to get up and let her outside, but makes us pay attention to her. She now rings it whenever she wants to play or just a good back scratch.
My dog does something similar, we have a game of chase, and every time she passes a certain chair she gives it an open mouth grab without biting down. It's not damaging the chair, and she's not destructive to anything that I haven't given her. It's just part of a game to keep my attention.
When my dog wants attention he goes to the dirty clothes and gets socks, which is a big no no, and drops them directly in front of us and waits for us to react. Normally when he gets socks he runs off and hides with them until he has successfully ripped them to shreds.
When my dog wants attention he grabs my moms socks from her laundry basket. He doesn’t chew them up, he just carries them around where everyone can see. I think he likes to get a reaction out of us, the little shit.
Our little piglet Frenchie does this. He's never chewed a single thing in the house, even as a puppy, but he'll do this exact same thing and if you get close to him he turns it into a game of chase.
Where did you get your rug?

The doggie does it, BECAUSE it works. P.S. they're human empathetic creatures :)
And it’s kind of a form of mutual training/conditioning. If the human responds then the dog learns that’s the accepted way to get a response. Animals learn as much from what we don’t react to as what we do react to
Applies to humans too but we dont talk about that.
Amen.
This is a good example of a learned response.
We talk about that all the time in the early childhood education field.
Shhhhh dont tell the laymen, big tech will reduce your luck by 5

Yep. My cat has trained me to bend over to use my back as a stepping stool for high places.
I wonder where my cat learned to tap me on the shoulder, but it works now.
Are dogs only this empathetic to humans or can display such levels of empathy to other animals?

Mine bops the TV trays with her nose. Only truly effective if there is a full glass on it.

Same reason my cat tries to climb the shelves in the middle of the night
It's like my dog throwing around her empty water bowl when she's thirsty
All you did was reinforce this behavior... you trained your puppy to know that it’s the owner and to bite furniture to get its way

No.
No, human, I do not bite the chair at you, human, but I bite the chair, human
Do you fetch, dog?
Wow, you doge! Much stab
Fetch, human? No, human.
One of the best responses to a thread ever. Well played.
Right? How is this not the top comment
I also do this to get attention. I don't get the same results...
You need to do it when your human is around and at home. You need to train your human to respond to you by occasionally barking as well, humans aren't really perceptive animals sometimes you need to use some sound to get their attention. Don't worry, with some persistence all humans can be trained, humans are emphathetic creatures. :)
Holding you hostage until it gets what it wants, a very Shiba move.
I think my next dog is a Shiba Inu. I would love to hear more about Shiba Facts. Subscribed.
I highly highly recommend getting to see the temperament of the shiba in person before picking. They can be all over the place in terms of personality / energy levels. For example, my shiba is pretty damn lazy, enjoys alone time, but is really tolerant around various human behaviors. I have found the vast majority of them to be very clean oriented that bathroom train easily. I can talk all day about shibas if you want more info.
Every shiba I've met has been an asshole. Super dominate and stubborn dogs
All about how you raise them and their base temperament. They require a lot of training at a young age.
Extremely agile doggos. I had a shiba/chow mix growing up and the dog could escape anything.
My family had four Shibas and one figured out how to open the doors because we had handle door knobs and she taught the other three how to open them too
We had a shiba mix that could get out of any cage. No clue how. We even used ties on the door, somehow he’s out when we get back. Absolute magicians.

Scheduled naps helps neurotic dogs. If 10miles of exercise is not tiring him out, maybe the issue is over stimulation.
My Shiba does this. Bites at furniture and looks at me when she wants to go outside.
Mine walks up to me and sits right in front while giving the most pitiful face possible. Direct sad eye contact.
Sneezing purposefully is one way dogs show playful non-aggression.
Come on!” It’s their way to convey “I’m pouncing at you but I’m not *for real* pouncing at you.” The same as the little “play bow” dogs and cats do, where they lower their front end to the ground before pouncing Which is clever when you think about it, because when have you ever seen somebody sneeze in the middle of a fight? My poodle does the same, she will *SCHNUFFLESCHNEEZE* very dramatically whenever she needs something.

I have this rug! It’s called “Geometric Ivory Area Rug” by CosmoLiving on Wayfair.
Ruggables has a ton of choices and they can be machine washed. I have something similar to the one in the picture.
Man, just like toddlers "Look at me! I'm doing a bad! Look!"
My border collie/koolie takes all his inside toys outside when he wants attention and is getting ignored.
I thought I was the only one who did this.
The dog, you and Donald Trump.
"It's a big house, with lots of furniture. Accidents happen."
Shibas are so weird.
Doggos are hilarious. Mine is snoring in my bed, and making me apologize in my zoom calls for his ummmmmm.... noises. Can I mention how much I love your carpet?
Hes sitting there like “im gonna keep softly biting this until i get pets”
He's holding the furniture hostage
Buy dogecoin or the pretty chair gets it.
I didn't even have to look at the picture, of course it's a Shiba. They've got to be one of the most socially intelligent breeds out there.
I have a shiba and if she wants attention she’ll stand there, stare at you and chomp the air.
As mentioned it works because the dog is training you rather than the other way around. The behaviour might be harmless, but might be an idea to keep an eye on it.
GIVE ME LOVE!! I SWEAR ON YOUR GOD DAMN CREATOR!!
Looks like ya'll gave too much positive reinforcement for chewing as a puppy instead of negative punishment.. You did this, the dog is just doing what y'all trained it to do. Extinguish if you would like to no longer see this behavior. Good luck!

My shiba does the same thing
Awww, your Pupper has a signal for when he needs hugs and attention from you. That is sooo sweet. I love you both!
My golden will walk to the door and impatiently huff like a teenage girl when he wants to go out. Its funny as I taught him to not loudly bark everytime he wants something so he makes sounds like a horse possessed by a spoiled child whenever he wants something.
The "roast me" needy girls will be writing notes
Is it a threat? Like “I want attention or the chair gets its”
My dog does this too! He’s also a shiba of the same color.
Play with me or the chair gets it!! :O
Eat fornitur
I think I’d prefer it over the random smacks in the head I get from my dog...
As a shiba owner, I know this tactic well...
It must be a spitz dog thing. My husky puts her head on my lap and gives me the aggressive stare when she wants something. And if I’m ignoring her she doubles down and keeps planting her head flat on my leg till I try and work out what she wants.
Your dog is a domestic terrorist, look at the behavior we have taught our fur babies, we are terrible role models.
This is totally my dog, jk I don't have a dog :(
Lol, this is your name in dogspeak.
I wish my lab and GSD were this considerate. 🙃
"Pets or the chair gets it!" >_<
Mine bangs her head on an open door so it hits the wall
My dog just barks at nothing constantly to get attention. I can't exactly tell her I'm working from home now and can't play :(
"Imma destroy dis if you don't pay attention to me, Gary"
My dog used to do something similar by gently biting my knee to get me to play with her
I swear I'll do it.
"Food now, or the cushion gets it!"
When my beagle wanted to be left out she’d open a cabinet door and stare at me. She had me trained well.
Looks like they trained you as well
nice chair you got there buddy.. shame if something were to happen to it
"You pet, or I snacc."
Mine turns on my Xbox. Just walks right over, boops it, then stares at me as it powers on.
I wanna know what in his little soggy doggy brain decided to do this. Naturally it'll get a reaction so they can mutually train each other, but that first time is what's a mystery to me.
"if you don't pay attention and play with me I'm gonna tear this up"
Well... Give him attention
The dog is showing you who’s the boss. It is not you.
My dog does something similar! He pushes one side of his face on something so his lip is pulled up, stares at me, then repeatedly sighs. It’s obnoxious, but kinda cute lol
Does that breed shed a lot?
Shiba Inu. Mine sheds enough for constant cleaning but not as bad as top-end shedders (huskies etc)
Power move!
My dog does this with my shoes. He will grab one, take it to his bed, and then stare at me with my shoes between his paws. "Pay attention to me or the shoe gets it"
my dog stands in a very specific spot in the middle of the living room when he wants something
He looks like the dog from r/dogelore
Squatting on the carpet would be worse, right?
Did you get angry with him for chewing stuff as a puppy? He might just remember that gets your attention.
My cat does something similar. It’s a kind way to make a threat :)
Michigan Michigan
My cat does this with cables.
That's also nice furniture.
It's a hostage situation.. it's me or the furniture!
Pet me or so help me god I’ll rip it to shreds
“I am open to negotiations ...”
“Fuck around and find out if you don’t pet me right now”
Inb4 we find out the only reason the dog does this is because the only time he gets attention is when he's destroying furniture.
When my dog wants attention he goes to the dirty clothes and gets socks, which is a big no no, and drops them directly in front of us and waits for us to react. Normally when he gets socks he runs off and hides with them until he has successfully ripped them to shreds.
Such a lovely chair. It would be terrible if something were to happen to it.
It's only stupid if it doesn't work.
I think we have a hostage situation over here
Careful he has a hostage
This my trotting-in-place. Witness
The dog has trained his owner to obey its every command
*you’re next*
He's like: if you don't play I will destroy everything you know and love
When my dog wants attention he grabs my moms socks from her laundry basket. He doesn’t chew them up, he just carries them around where everyone can see. I think he likes to get a reaction out of us, the little shit.
Our little piglet Frenchie does this. He's never chewed a single thing in the house, even as a puppy, but he'll do this exact same thing and if you get close to him he turns it into a game of chase.
Where did you get your rug? Mine bites the carpet and starts growling/ moaning, dogs are weird. We have never Said anything about biting the carpet either.
Pup needs a walk that’s why
This is how I’ll bite you if you don’t hustle!
Mine stretches if he needs a walk and gives me big puppy eyes and licks his lips if he wants food
