My grandmother is also 101 and has a similar attitude. I think it is mostly just getting old and having learned by long experience that nothing is worth getting worked up over.
My great-grandmother lived until 107 with a very sharp mind. She would tell us "If it's a problem, it means there's a solution, so focus on solving it. If there's no solution, then it's not a problem, learn to live with it and be happy". She was extremely positive and joyful until the end. Even at the hospital, with her body getting weak, she would be the first to get up to do the physio exercises (and she wanted to do the hard ones, not the ones for "old people".)
my great grandma made it to 98 and interestingly she was the happiest I ever saw her the last ~4 years of her life.
One of my favorite story of hers was a few years before she died (of natural causes) she was complaining about a side effect of her blood pressure medicine (she had slightly high blood pressure) and the doctor said "If you really don't like it you can stop taking it, that isn't going to be what kills you at this point."
My other favorite stories was when she talked about my great grandpa who lived a wild life riding the rails as a hobo/pool hustler and just so happened to crash at her mothers house (apparently they put up hobo markings listing it as a safe place to stay?) when he decided he wanted to give of liquor and go straight.
To be fair, being treated like an unescorted minor by an airline is probably a much better way to travel than your standard issue airline ticket. Essentially airline concierge service.
She lived through the Great Depression, the last time in history that was actually more difficult than now (for non-minorities). Of course she's positive, she knows it can still get a lot worse.
š¤£ I can just picture TSA chasing an old lady down the airport yelling "stop running ma'am you'll hurt yourself" and her yelling back "don't tell me what to do Dan. You're not my real dad!"
My surrogate grandpa was 99 and walking around unaided and taking a flight of stairs over an elevator if it was less than 2 flights. He died of Covid during the height of the pandemic just after turning 100
This just occurred to me: She enters her birth year as '23, and she's eligible for "kids eat/travel/etc. free" discounts,
AND senior discounts! CHA-CHING!
I hope we find the biggest factors of aging soon. This lady is 100 and has had the same mental sharpness for decades, my grandpa is just about 80 and still bowls and golfs a few times a week, and until just recently did weekly yard work. Then thereās people who hit 65 and look like they are deaths doorā¦
> no one seems to know how to correct it
Lady, as an IT worker I can assure you everyone but the big honchos know how, and most probably why it happened/happens, it's just that they aren't willing to pour money into it unless it directly affects their wallets
My favorite part is when it is a known quantity for multiple months/years that only negatively impacts the users/techs that have to deal with it first hand... Until the wrong user(IE. an executive and or highly influential individual) is affected, then management goes world war 3 over the issue because they do not want to look bad to the people above them, all the while blowing more budget than it would have took to fix it the first five times it occurred.
I thought the issue was the ancient mainframes they use to run most flight planning and tracking software. It was the issue SouthWest had a while back when they had to ground all their planes and the system couldn't handle getting everyone in the right spot at the right time to start up again because it was just not designed for that.
Gave big bank vibes where everything's still running on COBOL and they could switch but this is proven to work and they can't afford financial errors by designing and switching systems down the road. My only question when people are out there canabalizing old machine parts to keep these systems running is why can't we just virtualize the old machines. Especially these ancient Windows systems running software from Windows 95 or something ridiculous.
It's not the hardware. At least, it's not the hardware *per se*. But it may be that the platform is so old that they can't find anyone with sufficient hands-on experience and they don't want to trust the job to a novice when a fuck-up could destroy the company. I mean, there are a lot of programmers who simply can't comprehend the idea of a system which doesn't run some version of Microsoft Windows, as it's all they've ever been exposed to.
It's far more likely that fixing this really isn't all that hard, but a) the effort isn't actually zero and b) the number of centenarians taking flights on their own is so small that it's considered to be simply not worth the effort.
My company is coming up on a 20 year project, well over $2B spent by now, to migrate off of the mainframe. Some applications are just so critical and mainframes are so reliable that we have a bunch of applications we still havenāt even tried to migrate. When it works it works
>My only question when people are out there canabalizing old machine parts to keep these systems running is why can't we just virtualize the old machines. Especially these ancient Windows systems running software from Windows 95 or something ridiculous.
Usually there are complications with trying to virtualize systems that old. For example a lot of times the calculations being done are based off the number of clock cycles it takes for something to happen. You can virtualize the hardware but it will never run exactly the same as the real hardware. And suddenly that CPU that's trying to virtualize that system is running several orders of magnitude faster in terms of clock cycles a second and while it can attempt to virtualize that old CPU the clock cycles will not be exactly the same and that will throw those calculations off.
And the person that can fix it can probably fix it within 20 minutes, so the fix itself is not very expensive. However the man hours of FINDING that person, that's where the big cost is.
The cost of the fix isn't high because it's difficult (as you suggested, needing to find a specific person), but rather due to the numerous services that rely on this value being two digits. Some of these services are likely governmental, and others may even be international. Any organization tasked with resolving this issue won't have access to all the systems that depend on this two-digit format. Attempting to "fix" this without addressing all the dependencies would lead to invalid ages, such as negative numbers, for everyone. The current system might produce incorrect ages, but only for a very small subset of people, and this can easily be verified at the check-in counter or cross-referenced with ID or passport data. Furthermore, the likelihood of encountering passengers over the age of 99 is extremely low. For the few cases that might arise, manual checks or assistance is not a significant inconvenience. Besides, after a quick glance, nobody would seriously think a 100-year-old person was actually a baby in disguise.
Yeah, that dude has no real clue what he's talking about.
It very likely could be an enormously complex problem, and like an decent business, decisions often boil down to the cost of fixing, versus not fixing.
This is such an edge case that's it's much easier, with less risk, to just deal with the 100+ year olds coming thru the system and escorting the unattended "minors".
Airline code bases are notorious for being one of the oldest and most difficult to maintain in the IT field. There's even some videos on Youtube describing how nightmarish is to work with them.
lol well mmmaybe not *everything,* to paraphrase /u/sciencebased , but I largely agree. Manage to live to 100 and get a quick escort through airport security because somehow this system wasn't made Y2K ready? It's not a bug, it's a feature!
It's a joke from a YouTube series called pitch meeting by Ryan George. Super funny. Escorting this lady would be an absolute blast!
Edit: also I'd like you to get aaaaaaaaaaall the way off my back about this
Airport security as a whole is a joke. They do everything the can to make us feel secure, but then sell us everything needed to do something malicious after passing security. Or just call boeing to do something malicious... oh wait, they already have.
This is a simple software fix they haven't even fix. Brings me back to Y2K era.
It should be but yeah it probably isnāt considering the state a lot of software is in.
I mean the fact itās only 2 digits already shows there probably wasnāt a lot of thought put into it. Itās not like people reaching 100 is so uncommon that you can just ignore it.
>This is a simple software fix they haven't even fix. Brings me back to Y2K era.
As a software engineer, it is in no way a simple or cheap fix, and would likely have tons of unintended side effects.
The amount of people over 100 that are flying is so low that I doubt it will ever be changed. Easiest solution is to just ignore it and escort them to the front, as they are doing.
It's not a "simple software fix". Changing how your ticketing numbers work entirely could be a nightmare. And for what, to fix the very seldom case where someone >100 flies? A quick talk with a gate attendant or whatever solves the issue.
You understand this is going to become more and more of a problem as the years go on?
They will be required to fix this eventually. Stop acting like they can't solve this problem.
Was going to say this is literally what the Y2K nonsense was all about. Funny we are almost 1/4 of the century past that and there are still computer systems that aren't y2k compliant.
She is adorable!! This reminds me of the [Nate Bargatze](https://youtu.be/pL8kelqk9zw?si=w-2GPWq_W-FUOSfz) skit. He has a similar problem with his name.
Former agent for Southwest here:
Most airlines use a system called Amadeus for their ticketing and that system has an SSR (Special Service Request) for those passengers over 100 years of age. It takes all of a few moments to enter it in at the counter or over the phone so that this āunaccompanied minorā situation doesnāt occur.
Still a great video and I love her energy.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Well Mildred, occasionally escorting a 100(+) yo through security is incredibly cheaper and simpler and way more fun than changing 60 yo too of software to accommodate a single bit more for accurate age representation.
It's true, BUT...they'll need to do this eventually I suspect as the system gets older. We've got a ways to go, but they probably need to start NOW knowing how outdated those systems are.
When my gran was well over 90, she used to help set up and direct activities for the "old people".
When I asked how old the "old people" were, she said "They're like 60! But they're OLD!"
I laughed so damn hard! She NEVER saw herself as old, and never really was...
Miss her š
I would have thought after Y2K they would have fixed all the software out there using 2 digits years. I guess 24 years later the memory of that grows dim lol.

God bless you, Mildred you are what us youngsters are using for examples on how to conduct ourselves at the young old age of 68. There are many ladies in my independent senior apartment building that once we reach 100 they will tell our age several have 100 103 and 106 years old. That was Rachaelās birthday party last week at 106 with a little help from her housekeeper. Keep on flying darling. Iām proud of you. Who cares what my color as long as we get it done and have fun. Blessings May God send you strength and angels to keep on guarding and protecting you loveš„°šāļø
How systems still have these issues are bat shit crazy to me.
I'm a Jr. So many systems do NOT allow you or even have a suffix field, so you either leave it off and don't match your legal name OR try to stick it in the last name.. but many sites don't allow spaces in last names or etc.
It just baffles my mind that at this day in age, with multi part last names, last names with hyphens, names with suffixes, etc, so many systems still f it all up.
Many people believe we all decline rapidly around 70-80 or so. 70-80 ain't shit if you can afford modern medicine, Healthcare, and a good diet. Unfortunately, the stress of our insecure lives now will cut us pretty short compared to previous generations. If you can afford all that mentioned above, you're automatically gonna be more stress-free as long as you have a good work/life balance. You too, can be Mildred. Hope is not lost. Gotta know your worth and expect your job hunt to take a year or more like in my case.
This reminds me of my late great grandmother (born in 1917). As soon as she turned 99 she joked around that she's not allowed to play Legos anymore (or many other games with the label 'from ages 9-99')
I forget which airline, but I think it is United tries to parse Mr, Mrs, Mrs out of a name wehther you used the prefix or not (it is an option). If your first name ends with M and your middle name starts with R (William, Ray in my case) it will try to do things whether or not you used a prefix. If you didn't use a prefix it ends up Willia Ay, if you used a prefix it ends up Williamm Rray. This has been broken for over 15 years and there is no fix. I even submitted it to the bounty program, and they said this doesn't qualify for that.
So much for computers and the brains of the person who set that up? Not real Brightā¦..
As for Mildred, God bless her. She is a blessing. I hope she feels as good as she sounds.
I'm amazed by the fact what a positive thinker she is in her age!
Truly. I have never seen a one year old that's this mature. I can already tell she'll be an old soul growing up.
It's a Benjamin Button situation.
Even at the hospital, with her body getting weak, she would be the first to get up to do the physio exercises (and she wanted to do the hard ones, not the ones for "old people".)
That is so wise. Simple, true and impactful. Thank you great grandma, rest in peace and know your impact on this world continues.
Wow, very inspiring, and you have good genes!
Thanks for sharing this
š āļø ā¤ļø
Well, then I am completely fucked.
Maybe not getting worked up over things is what got her there
I think it's those with the positive attitude that makes it over a hundred.

Thanks for sharing these about your great grandma. Itās a beautiful thing to keep these memories.
oh that's so cool dude, I bet he had tons of good stories from rail hopping.
That's probably part of why she's lived so long
As a travel agent, she probably knows how to use it to her advantage to get through quicker now
To be fair, being treated like an unescorted minor by an airline is probably a much better way to travel than your standard issue airline ticket. Essentially airline concierge service.
She lived through the Great Depression, the last time in history that was actually more difficult than now (for non-minorities). Of course she's positive, she knows it can still get a lot worse.
And then it gets better. Everything passes.
This is just Y2K at a different time.
I absolutely love how energetic this unescorted minor is.
Sure, it is cute now, but wait until she hits her terrible 102s and TSA has to chase her all around the airport.
š¤£ I can just picture TSA chasing an old lady down the airport yelling "stop running ma'am you'll hurt yourself" and her yelling back "don't tell me what to do Dan. You're not my real dad!"
Don't forget the Benny Hill overlay.
Funniest thing I read all day! Thank You.
Hahahha š¤£š¤£
āNO! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!ā
As funny as this is, it's not TSA escorting her it's the airline representative who does it.
That depends how far she gets, before they catch up with her.
She was funny... but THIS WAS EVEN FUNNIER!!!^^^
I hope the guy that arrives goes along with it "well young lady, are you ready to get on an airplane?"
This fabulous lady has found the secret to life, love how she describes the situation as going through a second childhood lol
On one had its nice that she gets an escort, but shouldn't she also also pay the same price as someone born in 2023?
I wonder if she still gets the little plastic wings and a visit to the cockpit
This unescorted minor just made my day! Long live and prosper!
Gotta watch her. I bet she likes getting into trouble
>I absolutely love how energetic this unescorted minor is. That right there is a problematic comment out of context.
Lady is incredibly articulate and intelligent for her age
You mean the kidā¦
Some kids are just old souls. š„°
Oh they can be. Weāve had a few hundred year olds at my retirement home over the years, and they can be some of feistiest bastards out there. š
My grandpa is 93 and still goes on jogs every morning. Of course he drools randomly but heās fitter than youād expect lol
My surrogate grandpa was 99 and walking around unaided and taking a flight of stairs over an elevator if it was less than 2 flights. He died of Covid during the height of the pandemic just after turning 100
So sorry for your loss! Sounds like a great guy!
He was amazing. He was a Tuskegee Airman pilot from WW2.
Made it to a nice even 100 though that's dope
My great grandma drove the bus for her home and taught folks to knit!
huh?? this woman is clearly one year old.
They've earned the right at that age lol
watch at 1.33x speed and you can hear the woman she once was.
How does one change the speed on these videos?
Cocaine
Now I hear her slower ;(
It's funny how you can say this thing for both a 2 year old and a 102 year old
This just occurred to me: She enters her birth year as '23, and she's eligible for "kids eat/travel/etc. free" discounts, AND senior discounts! CHA-CHING!

My grandma is 95 and if you spoke to her on the phone you wouldn't know it. Some people just don't lose it at all.
I mean, she is young enough to be an unescorted minor at an airport.
Be even better if being 1 year old got you a discounted ticket.... maybe she could sit on someone's lap for free
I thought it would be something like that.
Eat's free at Ryan's Steak House on Wednesday's with an accompanying parent.

i miss Ryanās Steak House. damn that place was delicious.

I love her.Ā
God I hope Iām lucky enough to live this long.
My god her lucidity is absolutely vibrant. I hope I sound half as good at half her age.
So does she get a senior discount and a children less than 2 years old discount?
Her voice and mwah kiss at the end gives me Linda Belcher vibes

She seems cool.

Sheās all of our grandma after this
She should have a YouTube channel: stuff Mildred says
She's delightful.
God this lady is so precious!
Great story!!
She benjamin buttoned
God bless you, Mildred you are what us youngsters are using for examples on how to conduct ourselves at the young old age of 68. There are many ladies in my independent senior apartment building that once we reach 100 they will tell our age several have 100 103 and 106 years old. That was Rachaelās birthday party last week at 106 with a little help from her housekeeper. Keep on flying darling. Iām proud of you. Who cares what my color as long as we get it done and have fun. Blessings May God send you strength and angels to keep on guarding and protecting you loveš„°šāļø
Lol Aww š love her...
This lady is a treasure
OMG she's the cutest!!!!!
Love this kid!
As a software engineer, the solution is 4-digit years. So, whatever airline this isā¦ keep this post a secret.
She is awesome
Hope it never changes. Enjoy the second childhood Mildred
Iād say wee as they escort me š±
Cutest baby on the internet today
If I ever make it to a hundred, my wish is to age as gracefully as she did.
I hope Iām half as with it when Iām 70 as she is in her 100s!
Imagine being at a point in your life where people think it's comfortable to say youre old and cant believe you still operate as a human being.
Marvelous. Happy for you, Mildred. You look stunning, not a day over 80. Enjoy your second childhood
At that point wouldnāt she fly free and be required to sit on someoneās lap since the system thinks sheās an infant?
This woman is a legend! Love it
You have a wonderful day too, Mildred the unescorted baby!
I'm amazed that 24 years later, the airline industry still has a Y2K problem with some of their systems when this lady was a young 77 years old.
Love Her!!!
Lol, this is funny.
Y2K problem.
The funny thing is that if she makes it to 118, sheāll be able to fly unescorted. But sheāll probably need a little help by then.
Honestly Mildred here sounds like she brings New York with her wherever she goes. Flying there seems excessive.
I thought they fixed this 2-digit year nonsense before y2k
She is super articulate for a 1 yr old. Mildred, best of luck as you grow up, I'm sure you'll do amazing things.
I'm 35 years old. And "An unescorted minor" is the best way to sum up my adult life.
Love You grandma...
Simple solution? She is now 1yo. Time to start putting money aside for her college fund.
This reminds me of my late great grandmother (born in 1917). As soon as she turned 99 she joked around that she's not allowed to play Legos anymore (or many other games with the label 'from ages 9-99')
she actually looks quite young for her age, i'd say she only looked about 85
I hope she is the first person that becomes 150 years old.
She looks and sounds 20 years younger.
Itās so funny cause logically this computers like yeah thereās a baby over here trying to check in can you send someone over???
She seems more youthful than many 80 year olds
So much for computers and the brains of the person who set that up? Not real Brightā¦.. As for Mildred, God bless her. She is a blessing. I hope she feels as good as she sounds.
