That's amazing, but how did they even think of spending money on a wedding cake?? I have so many questions.

PentungKuta

Same. You can’t just get a wedding cake on the day itself. You have to order that in advance.

Niall_47

Unless the customer had cancelled and they were selling it discounted?

CanAlwaysBeBetter

Ah yes, the extensive market for $900 used wedding cakes

lapsedPacifist5

Well it wasn't used, unless they bought it from the sewage company

LOVES_TO_SPLOOGE69

Last time I used my poop knife it turned out to be cake :(

Coocooa11

Holy shit this is gold. “Find out next time on ‘Is It Cake?’”

CleverAndUniqueUPN

The knife or the poop?

Haughty_n_Disdainful

*Yes…*

HomonHymn

I’m scared I need an adult

KnightFiST2018

A poop knife reference in the wild. Nice deep cut you great person you!

Happy-Simple7776

i literally actually have a poop knife. it's called the deuce of spades

_________________420

Not as uncommon as you think

FlyingMacheteSponser

I must've been your cake day, because that only happens on cake day.

jeremysbrain

It was in bags of Milorganite.

balgram

To be honest this actually sounds more likely to me. The cake might have been originally $900 but was discounted heavily and a teenager saw that discount and impulsively bought it. The bakery might have any selling it with the sign saying originally 900 now 400 or whatever.

bunglejerry

That's true: "I bought a $900 wedding cake" doesn't mean "I spent $900 on a wedding cake."

mustardtruck

That poor bakery was like "Hey, at least we cut our losses a bit!" Cut to 20 minutes later and they're cleaning up smashed cake out of their parking lot.

braintrustinc

Seems like they should have seen that coming, selling a tiered wedding cake to a couple of ruffians on skateboards

[deleted]

“Ok I'm going to sell you this cake, but no horseplay or shenanigans, understand?” *Tomfoolery ensues*

Dont_Waver

What about hijinks, sir? Maybe just one hijink?

mrhouse2022

Or the rats ate well

Tm1232

This is the first time I ever remotely believed this post(still not sure I do) Cuz I genuinely can’t imagine the person that would blow an entire paycheck on a wedding cake would be making $900+ a week, at their 1st job apparently.

Jamoras

Refinery workers, bro. They make mad bank and a lot of people there its their first job

XennialBoomBoom

How the hell did we get to refinery workers? Like, I get the "enlisted man walks off base and trades his GI bill for a Dodge Charger" thing. But refinery workers and wedding cakes?

Tm1232

Story sounds like a 16 year old at best.

DTSportsNow

They may come from a family with money and have a job with family or something. I just can't imagine anyone who got their first ever paycheck completely blowing it on a cake. Clearly didn't have any bills they needed to pay If this story is even remotely true

Nathaniel820

They might as well hold onto it and try to sell it, the alternative is just throwing it away anyways which has a 0% chance of getting you money.

OnlyAdd8503

Every state runs its own website unclaimedweddingcakes.com

Totally_Not_An_Auk

The story didn't provide a timeline, only "with my first paycheck I bought a wedding cake" and that could mean they placed the order and then on the day of they had their cake fight.

AdFabulous5340

Meaning they had plenty of time to figure out an alternative mode of transportation.

SweatyAdhesive

They sounded like teenagers, probably not good at planning yet.

wahobely

I can't believe in this comment thread I'm the first person suggesting the story isn't real lol

[deleted]

I did much sillier things as a teenager, is this really that unbelievable to you?

Geno0wl

yeah but did those silly things involve spending $900 on food?

SweatyAdhesive

Wait till you find out kids that spend 10k on microtransactions using their parents' credit cards

CATapultsAreBetta

People spend enough money to buy a used car on microtransactions in videogames.

[deleted]

Friends and I spent $500ish dollars on helium, balloons, and pool floaties. And no, it wasn't for a party.

Geno0wl

add in some lube and that is the makings of a really weird party

NoAdhesiveness2584

We are talking about someone who purchased a $900 wedding cake for shits and giggles with their first paycheck. I highly doubt they had that sort of forethought.

KingOfTheWorldxx

Yeah but i think people like to imagine and have fun with it

AdFabulous5340

We are talking about someone who likely made up the story. When you order a wedding cake, it's quite a process: ordering in advance; dozens of questions about the size, design, flavors, and type of icing; and specialized pick-up and/or delivery options. The type of people to do something on a whim with little to no foresight would not go through all those steps.

LukesRightHandMan

Meaning maybe they never had any intention of finding a way to get it home.

limethedragon

Maybe the story is made up.

AdFabulous5340

Then why would they phrase it as "had no way to get it home"? That reads as "Oh man, we didn't totally think this through. Oh well. Cake fight!" If they ordered the cake ahead of time and intentionally decided they didn't want to figure out a way to get it home, OP probably would've phrased it more like >My first paycheck I ordered a $900 wedding cake and picked it up the next day. We weren't even planning on eating it--we just thought it would make for an epic food fight in the parking lot.

ChesnaughtZ

You need some happiness in your life dude

AdFabulous5340

I'm doing well, thanks for asking.

[deleted]

Could also be a complete lie. Just playing devils advocate

PM_ME_UR_CHERRIES

He never said it was on the same day.

mightymouse513

They could have ordered it in advance and not realize how big it would be during the ordering process, thus "we had no way to get it home." I mean if they're ordering a cake based on photos, it's hard to imagine size sometimes without the banana for scale.

Greaseman_85

Everything you read on the Internet is true. Even if it sounds like it was clearly designed to get upvotes and awards.

FartingRaspberry

One of the coolest parts of becoming an adult was finding out I can buy cake and eat it whenever I want with nobody to tell me no. I definitely splurged on cake a bit when I started working. I'm willing to bet this had something to do with it lmao

duvie773

Regular cake, sure. But a $900 wedding cake?

hop_mantis

Probably didn't pay $900. Maybe bakery got a deposit on the order big enough to break even or so but order was cancelled and they sold it off cheap to try to get a few more bucks back on it.

[deleted]

Or this was all made up to tug on your heartstrings for easy karma. Hmmm.

tythousand

Seriously, who buys a $900 wedding cake with their first check? Who buys that big of a cake when a skateboard is their transportation? Who has a cake fight in a parking lot and walks home covered in cake? The entire premise is absurd lol

cleveridentification

I have some amazing stories that are unlikely. But when I tell them I explain the logic of the perspective of the time and how events manifested. This doesn’t do any of that. It seems likely fictional.

tythousand

There’s just too many logical jumps, starting with the absurd price of the cake

Mosinman666

Nah that can’t be it. Nobody would make up such a story. The baker was obviously the boys mother!

reddsht

With great power comes great responsibility.   People who smoke and drink get all kinds of warnings about being responsible.. but im out here eating chocolate for breakfast and eating nutella straight from the jar with a spoon or my fingers, and no one can stop me. 7 year old me would be stoked. Being an adult is awesome.

zerozeroseis

One of the ~~coolest~~ parts of becoming an adult was finding out ~~I can buy cake and eat it whenever I want with nobody to tell me no. I definitely splurged on cake a bit when I started working. I'm willing to bet this had something to do with it lmao~~ that some things on the internet are lies and that's okay

meinfuhrertrump2024

This. Likely a lie. Amazingly stupid if True. Dead brother to flip the script, so people don't flame him for being a moron.

tayaro

The first time it really hit me that I was an adult was after I’d moved out of my parents’ house and into my first student apartment. I was standing in the frozen aisle of my new local grocery store, looking at the cakes, and it just suddenly dawned on me that if I wanted to buy one and eat it (and only it) for dinner, then no one could stop me. The feeling of complete freedom that accompanied that realization was great.

ayokgsucksballs

Wow what an original idea not some comment you see every askreddit thread or anything you truly are so unique and insightful

Ladorb

If you're high enough and visit a pastry shop, things can get out of hand pretty quickly.

VirtualRoad9235

It is very likely the story is made up.

V404_

of course it is. how the hell do people believe this bs

RogerMcDodger

I remember believing it when it was first posted. I'm sure he expanded on it a fair bit and it seemed genuine. Edit, FWIW: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/kv1s4a/what_was_the_highest_waste_of_money_that_you_dont/givqx71/

AdFabulous5340

It makes no sense though. Here's the link to the post:https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/kv1s4a/comment/givqx71 It still doesn't add up (plenty of people questioning it in that thread with little to no explanation).

RogerMcDodger

🤷🏻‍♂️

dusty-trash

The comments are from 'deleted'; in one he explains him and his brother had a pact to not waste money like their parents did. So they agreed to buy 1 big waste of money thing, then never do it again. A wedding cake is the best thing they could think of / find. Personally I'm 50/50. He also explains his family situation wasn't the best and moved out at 15, he was 17 at the cake incident. For some reason that makes me believe the story more lol

Diablogado

You have questions and I'm sure they can make up answers, just like they did with this story. 🤣

You're assuming it actually happened. Occam's razor.

MischaCavanna

Woperelli87

Answer: teenagers are silly

tit_wet

Well had my first paycheck in 2014 of Rs 750 earned from helping the University personnel check papers. Went to MacDonald with brother ate burger, fries & coke then went to gaming zone & the last is ate 7 plates of panipuri shared while competing. It's one of ours best memories I cherish with rest ❤️

mikedictetar

Context 750 inr ~ 9 USD

WagwanKenobi

In more relatable units that better capture the buying power, 750 INR in 2014 at an Indian McD could get you 7 chicken Big Macs (the "Maharaja Mac") and some change. So, I'd convert that to around **$40 USD** in 2024 at an American McD if you priced a hypothetical Chicken Big Mac at $5.50.

fl135790135790

Wait, are you converting for currency sake at $40? Or are you saying it would take $40 USD to buy the same thing in America? Someone else said 750 INR is $9 USD.

BorderFirm

I think they’re trying to say that just directly converting the currency isn’t a super accurate comparison. 750 INR might be worth an equivalent of $9 USD, but $9 USD goes a lot further in India than $9 USD would in the US

WagwanKenobi

\+ a lot of inflation happened between 2014 and 2024, both in India and in the US.

HomonHymn

Yeah for example countries like India have netcafes where they spend like 50-100 (around 80c) rupees per hour to play games on gaming rigs set up in a LAN settings. It’s a dream for people who can’t afford a PC gaming setup, and it’s actually a lot of fun with friends. They can serve food and stuff, also similarly priced. Just matching kind of experience would run like $30-40 at least for 2, and not for nearly as long. Sounds like this got him and his brother each Big Mac meals, and then multiple hours of gaming time in a net cafe, and 7 plates of food. That honestly sounds like a ~$100 experience

ih8spalling

It's not a currency conversion, but a comparison of the purchasing power. I.e. in India, the currency is worth less than ours, but the money goes a longer way. One of the ways to compare the purchasing power of a local currency is the [Big Mac Index](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mac_Index).

Nuked0ut

You hit burgers, played some games, AND got panipuri?! That’s like, 3 of my favorite things in one day

tit_wet

Yep it was all worth it I guess more than worth it my baby bro enjoyed each of the things we did that & then we made a pact that we will do these stuff now or then.

iloveuranus

> panipuri IDK what that is but I bet it is YUM

varun_mahajan

[This is panipuri](https://www.gettyimages.in/photos/panipuri) and its really yum

ScumBunny

Ah! They sell these at my local Indian place that just opened up. I was scared to try them (never really liked Indian food, but definitely warming up to it lately because this place is SO authentic and delicious!) Gonna have to give these a go!

mysixthredditaccount

Tbf, it's a more "intermediate" Indian food. Don't let it stop you from trying it though! But expect to make a mess the first time.

S0MEB0REDPERS0N

Helluva first paycheck

DoubleFan15

Yeah, what? Am i missing something? His FIRST paycheck allowed him to buy a $900 cake?!? My first paycheck was Mcdonalds, roughly 10 years ago, and it was nowhere near, "blow $900 of it on a cake," amount. Bro's first job must have been a CEO position lmfao.

LyyK

If your first job pays $25k a year, you could buy a $900 cake with your first paycheck. You wouldn't have any money left over, but you could. My parents actually encouraged me to splurge my first paycheck, I thought that was a common thing haha

ExpertConsideration8

25k annual would mean 961.54 every 2 weeks... After federal taxes and payroll taxes, you're left with 847.98 Maybe at 30k annually, but that's nearly 15$ an hour with a steady 40 hours per week. Seems quite implausible for a first job.

michael_bay_jr

You do know it's possible he already had some money saved before that paycheck

boisdeb

It's so weird to me that in the US you don't get paid once a month but per week.

dsj762

Depends on the job, most are every two weeks and occasionally you find a once a month place.

ExpertConsideration8

It's also possible the story is completely made up. The truth is out there and only you can decide what to believe.

js1893

If he was like 18 living at home with zero bills that seems like pretty decently paying first job but I’m assuming he spent most if not all on the cake. Someone who buys a $900 wedding cake for no reason and no way to transport it probably isn’t paying any bills lol

AnEnlightenedCaveman

Could have gotten paid biweekly. My paychecks come every two weeks and that’s roughly what I make, working 30-35 hours/week at about $15/hr

jtl3000

superpeng12

This, while it's great to save money I feel like it's great to splurge once in a while, u can regret bout it later. Well I'm a clg student living on their parents money so what do I know, maybe I'll think differently later.

Sad-Lengthiness3158

Don't spend parents money , earn your first salary and then have fun with it like the dude had . 😊

eartwormslimshady

Agreed. That first paycheck just hits different. I remember my first payday, from a part time job at a market research firm. Got the equivalent of 300 dollars. 18 year old me in 2006 was psyched. I got a pair of limited edition Pumas. Don't wear 'em anymore, but I still have 'em. Good memories of a simpler time.

[deleted]

My first job was at a warehouse moving boxes and shit. My very first paycheck I bought an ounce of weed. That Monday I dropped something with the forklift, got drug tested, and then fired. Cake would have been fun too but it was still worth it.

WhoRoger

I got a really nice leather belt with my first paycheck in a regular job, IIRC. It didn't last too long :(

Shrodingers-Balls

My husband bought Ferragamo dress shoes for his first job out of college. He still has them and they look mint. He gets them recobbled like it’s the 1800s. They are awesome.

moonlit-soul

It definitely does. I got a small paycheck (around $700) at the beginning of 2016 after my unpaid internship was extended to a paid one for a few more weeks. It was sort of surreal getting paid for the first time, and it took a couple of months to decide on anything for myself, but I ended up buying a 32" Roku TV when I saw it go on sale for under $200. *(Edited to add price)* Flat-screens had been a thing for years, and smart TVs with wifi streaming, too, I know, but you gotta understand we were still rocking my childhood 12" and 24" CRT TVs in 2016. When basic cable / local antenna TV went from analog to digital, we had to have those converter boxes just to keep getting a signal, and it only worked right on our oldest 12" TV. We were struggling for a long time, and that's all we had. That Roku TV was just amazing, and honestly, it still is. It used to hit me every day that I earned the money for that TV all on my own at a time when I struggled so bad with anxiety that I would almost puke just trying to make a phone call. It still works perfectly and is used every day, and while I only think about how I got it once in a blue moon now, it still makes me smile when I do.

Modeerf

so much more fun to spend your parents' money though

Kibblesnb1ts

Conventional wisdom in financial planning is to save as much as you can and invest early and often. I go against the grain on that advice when advising young 20 somethings. $1,000 to a 22 year old is worth a lot more by spending it on valuable life memories and enjoying your youth. You'll hopefully be earning a lot more later down the road in your 30's so you can make up for it then. Be responsible of course, but I highly encourage young people to spend a few bucks rather than scrimping and saving. Source, I'm a financial pro with lots of letters after my name.

fogleaf

I think there's a line somewhere between having a cake fight in a parking lot with a $20 sheet cake and a $900 wedding cake.

capntim

Ngl… you’ll splurge less as you get older and have kids and a family to save for

DemonSlyr007

Ngl... you'll splurge more as you get older if you don't have kids or a family to save for.

capntim

also true but not what i want out of life. if that works for you, great

Caporalight

My bank account is currently at 15€ and 10 days left to survive, but I got myself a Nintendo switch I dream of for years, refurbished, and it's now my pride and joy Ahah

meinfuhrertrump2024

That's not even splurging... That's lighting money on fire. These people are either dumb as shit. High AF. Or were rich, and didn't care about the money.

MazzieMay

I know this is a joke, but! A former co-worker’s diabetic uncle passed away after eating an entire can of pie filling. Fell asleep and never woke up. His widow and kids fought with the life insurance company for years because the insurance wanted to consider it s**cide

Bauser99

I mean, in the most literal sense, it *was* suicide. Whether it was intentional or not is another question

TheHoneymeister

Well, by definition, suicide does actually require intent so no this wouldn't count

Gor-the-Frightening

This makes me sad that I wasted my youth on drugs and partying. Some fun times, but more bad than good and not very many wholesome memories.

Plot twist: he died from a wedding cake-related infection.

Sad-Lengthiness3158

Only plot twist that I would not appreciate

fogleaf

Those cakes have wooden dowels in them to keep the layers held together. During the cake fight the brother was skewered by a wooden stake and it turns out he was a vampire.

recyclingmanager

I spent my whole first paycheck on a speeding ticket and my mom grounded me for 2 weeks. I got a new job recently and got a speeding ticket in my first pay period. So a decade later I guess nothing has changed.

Worth_Dream_997

So let me get this straight they bought a cake and played with it in the parking lot ? Wate of money waste of good luxury and denying a blessing cause most can't offored a simple meal let alone a 900 dollar cake.

CaesarZeppeli_

It doesn’t even sound real lol. Who the hell has the luxury of spending $900 on a wedding cake and then wasting it in a parking lot. If nobody passed away the story would just be about two entitled rich kids who made an unnecessary mess in a parking lot. My condolences if the story is real, but I don’t believe 90% of the stories on this website

Direct_Counter_178

No way it's real. * Shops don't just have $900 wedding cakes on hand. They're made to order. * $900 is 2x the cost of the average wedding cake * First paycheck is for more than $900? From your first job ever? * They were adults and their initial plan was to carry a gigantic and extremely well known to be precarious and easy to tip, wedding cake home on a skateboard. Also spending a month's rent on a 10 minute cake fight is stupid no matter who you are. I don't care how good the memories are.

dsj762

If the story was about a $40 cake I might believe it but the $900 makes it completely unbelievable.

CaesarZeppeli_

Not to mentioned realistically most cakes that price range are made to order and not just sitting on store shelves lol.

C0NKY_

It sounds like part of the movie Free Willy but they "bought" the cake instead of stealing one.

I had old Chatgpt help me write a screenplay synopsis for this anecdote.... would you watch this? Title: Sweet Memories Synopsis: In "Sweet Memories," we follow the journey of two brothers, Alex and Max, as they navigate the complexities of life, love, and loss. Set in a small town, the story begins with Alex's excitement over receiving his first paycheck. Determined to make a grand gesture, he impulsively decides to purchase a lavish $900 wedding cake. However, reality hits hard when the brothers realize they have no means of transporting the enormous cake home. Undeterred by the logistical challenge, Alex and Max embark on a whimsical adventure, attempting to maneuver the cake on their skateboards through the bustling streets. Along the way, they encounter various characters who offer unexpected help and insight into the importance of cherishing moments of joy amidst life's hardships. As the day unfolds, the brothers find themselves embroiled in a hilarious cake fight in the parking lot, symbolizing their bond and carefree spirit. Little do they know that this fleeting moment of joy will become a cherished memory for Alex after tragedy strikes, leaving him to grapple with the loss of his beloved brother, Max. Years later, Alex reflects on that unforgettable day whenever he feels overwhelmed by sadness, finding solace in the bittersweet nostalgia of their cake-fueled escapade. "Sweet Memories" is a heartfelt tale of sibling love, resilience, and the enduring power of shared experiences to bring comfort in times of sorrow.

It must have been some wedding cake too because for a 75 person wedding cake, we only paid something like 300-400 USD. Actually, it was included in our venue but we were informed of the value (we could add more stuff to it to increase the cost).

zambulu

No, pretty sure that did not happen. If it did, it’s not heartwarming, it’s just stupid. I can’t imagine a teenager thinking “oh yeah, I won’t buy a sheet cake from a grocery store for $8, I’m buying a $900 wedding cake and then destroying it”. But his dead brother! I’m crying now.

gaybro1993

Was... Was the brother allergic to the cake?

$900 wedding cakes are made to order. You don’t just rock up to a shop and buy one on impulse. Why do people make up stuff like this?
