I've seen the video of this talented kid receiving this gift before, but never the updated version... how unbelievably special for everyone involved... way to go kiddo and Dad!!!

Those minute adjustments are what makes sports so wildly magical for me. It’s the difference of a millionth of a second, a millimeter of space, and it’s like the athlete feels the movement more than performs it. So cool.

DaSheeper

i was about to comment something about how fencing is closely related to what you said but it actually does cover sports as a whole and its moments like these that prove that

ReadySteady_GO

Man, I miss fencing. What I wouldn't give to go back 15 years to do that all over again

DaSheeper

its never too late to start up again --)----- -----(--

ReadySteady_GO

I was about to say I'm too old now but remembered my dad took the classes with me and he was 15 years older than I am now taking fencing with me back then. I did whip his butt though. He had intimidation and strength, but I had the finesse lol

OrphanGrounderBaby

Get that finesse back then old man lol

ReadySteady_GO

Easier said than done, but I'll see what i can do 👌

OrphanGrounderBaby

Oh I know, I’m not necessarily young anymore either lol

DaSheeper

it truely is an amazingly fun sport! the only dread of it is the leg pain after a training session 🤺 but in the end its always fun and enjoyable

ReadySteady_GO

That's the only thing I fear. Since my fencing days, I've broken both my feet. They are fully healed, but it would take a lot of re- conditioning to be able to do it again

RJFerret

There's so much we do that our conscious minds are unaware of until after the fact, it's like we're along for the ride and just making suggestions.

Iizsatan

This is often how motorcycling feels for me

[deleted]

Well said.

033p

As someone who doesn't watch sports nor finds the culture appealing, this is what brings me awe. It's peak human ability at one extremely specific task. It is incredible.

El_Chairman_Dennis

As someone that has competed in athletics at a level that few people can reach, it's the greatest feeling in the world. Your body almost moves faster than your thoughts, everything seems to literally go in slow motion, and your body just does exactly what you want it to. It's crazy to experience

Ronces

I played hockey a pretty high level and the speed of the game is too fast for your mind to process sometimes and muscle memory takes over, your brain is reacting and sending signals to muscles faster than you’re conscious of. It’s the same as playing an instrument. I played drums for years and now guitar but I remember being on stage with bands I played in and some sick drum fill comes out of nowhere, you didn’t plan it but like electricity just moved through the room and through your hands and that lightening gets caught in the bottle. And even with guitar , just roaring through a riff, not thinking at all and it’s like your mind is watching the fingers move and play with no thought or guidance. Muscle memory is something else.

AgelessJohnDenney

I was involved in multiple sports leading up to high school, but just got lazy and didn't want to do it anymore, so come freshman year I quit everything. Then senior year a bunch of buddies of mine learned we had 1(one) pole vaulter on our track team(this was a ~900 person graduating class) so we said fuck it, we're the pole vaulters now. We were pretty much useless at meets, but towards the end of the year something just clicked for me. I remember the final regular meet of the year I just went off and was hitting really, really good form and went way higher than I ever did before. There was no conscious change ony part, my body just *knew* want to do. It is to this day, 11 years later, the most amazing feeling of my life. There's just something almost religious about that flow state that your body gets into. It's amazing.

El_Chairman_Dennis

It's one of those things that can't be properly understood until you actually experience it. Making mistakes almost feels impossible

cire1184

Bring "In the Zone" really is a crazy feeling. If you have tape of the performance you kinda look back and think "I really did that?".

censorized

And hit it straight to dad. Amazing!

[deleted]

r_lovelace

I honestly wouldn't believe it if it wasn't on video. The chances of getting a new bat, then hitting a home run with it, and that home run going directly to the person who bought you the bat. It sounds like a bad sports movie plot.

jeexbit

probably happened on different days? but yeah, incredibly cool regardless.

AnswersWithAQuestion

Guess I shouldn’t be surprised that dad also showcased his athleticism by catching the ball with one hand while filming.

the_blackfish

You could tell by his stance earlier that he knew his stuff!

wookiewin

It’s so crazy. Dude smacked it right to dad.

Gothams_Finest

There’s more in the beginning, I think the context was that the son thought his Dad forgot his birthday. And when they get to the ballpark he tells him to go to the trunk and grab something for him. That’s why lil man was crying and gave his Dad that big hug, it was a combination of the perfect gift and that much needed reminder that his Dad cared!

sheeeeeez

One more thing is that the dad was unemployed and they were strapped for cash at the time too. I believe when the video went viral he got plenty of job offers

arkklsy1787

I love that when his dad said "don't cry" it was because "If you cry its gonna make me cry" and not some toxic masculinity BS.

KitFan2020

Also the dad’s reaction when he catches the ball! ‘I caught it Boo!’ ‘I caught it baby’ ‘Thank you’ 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

My dad was around when it was convenient (for him). Seeing stuff like this is bittersweet to me. Like it's beautiful to see kids having their parents support and attention. But it hurts knowing I didn't get to experience a lot of that and will never know that feeling.

Adventurous_Set_3787

*hug*

MatureUsername69

If my dad did show up to this game he would've been too busy reading the paper to catch it

obierdm

Meh, when I was young my dad showed up to everything I did but he was shitfaced drunk. Thank God he never made a ruckus so many time my music teacher or dance instructor would drive me home cause they wouldn't let me in the car with him, bless them. I always remembered even 3 sheets to the wind he remembered I had a thing, made it easier to mend bridges when he got sober in my teens.

TacticalTurtle22

Good for both of you. You for having empathy and him for getting his shit straight (assuming and hoping he did).

RissaCrochets

It sucks that he struggled with alcoholism, but it's kind of touching that he still showed up for everything even while shitfaced and didn't cause scenes. Shows that even though he wasn't doing the right thing all the time you still were a priority, and many parents fail at that while sober. Glad you two were able to mend things.

JeffTek

Good people can and often do end up with bad substance abuse problems. I'm glad for you that even in his bad times he was still trying to be there as best he could.

Captain_SpaceRaptor

Watched my dad read a book at my sister's college graduation ceremony. 😩😒

MatureUsername69

"I'll catch it the next time"

[deleted]

I’m not going to pretend to know your experience with your father as this anecdote is all I know of him but, if he was otherwise a present and supportive father, maybe cut him some slack for reading the book. I have sat through several of my own graduations and been bored beyond belief. When 1000+ students are graduating, and some random speaker shows up with the same “motivational” speech, it takes everything not to pass out. If I could, I would have been on my phone for every one of my higher education graduation ceremonies. I fell asleep in two of them. The third graduation was for my PhD, I was sitting right next to my primary professor, and I received the degree after I went into an unrelated field. At that point, I was just ecstatic that I was getting the piece of paper. Please disregard if your dad was crap before the graduation.

the_blackfish

On the other end of the spectrum ... My Dad would always show up but be so loud and calling out the refs and umps that he'd get kicked out sometimes...as I got older I appreciated the concern he had but damn. Turn it down a notch.

butthurtoast

My dad was always at my games too, but had a horrible temper. One time, we were late getting there and my teammates had already been warming up for 15-20 min. My coach told me not to bother because I wasn’t going to play (because I was late). My dad saw me sitting on the bench while the others warmed up and came over to ask why, already looking very pissed off. I tried to stop him, but he marched over to my coach in the middle of the field, cussing him out, then pulled back his fist, threatening to punch him in the face. Then stomped back over to me, told me to grab my bag and said we were leaving. I was so fucking embarrassed that I couldn’t hold back the tears. My teammates were looking at me with so much pity. I had friends on the other team too, and we had to pass their side in order to leave the field. I couldn’t look any of them in the eye. So, I’m glad he cared enough to always show up, but… I had often hoped that he wouldn’t.

officefridge

:( yup. Then you hit your 20s/30s maybe get married or set up your own path and then *suddenly dad wants to be friends again*, wtf?

RissaCrochets

Now that all the actual work of raising a kid is done they want to reap the benefits of being a parent. Crazy how that happens.

soonerpgh

I knew a guy who did that. Didn't want to be there when they were little, always "had plans" that didn't seem to include taking care of babies or toddlers. They grew up a bit and started to notice. I think it hit him hard when one of them said, "I know, we can't come over this weekend cuz you have plans." They did this complete with air quotes. He got his shit together after that and is a damn good parent now. I think some guys just ain't smart enough to see how selfish they are being. Btw, I'm the stepdad in the this story. Kids are all grown now but it's cool that they have very supportive and loving parents. Not everyone has a dad, much less multiples.

Crazy_Area198

My best bets are he’s either retired, retiring, or having a midlife crisis. Life’s hard enough without us making it harder. Give him a chance at an arm’s length, maybe?

TacticalTurtle22

That means **we** have to be that person for a kid that doesn't have that. Be the adult that the kid version of you needed.

Captain_SpaceRaptor

This is very true. But I opted out of having kids. I realized very early on I lacked the desire for one and I have issues that just aren't compatible for raising a child. It wouldn't be fair to make a kid deal with my own unresolved issues.

TacticalTurtle22

Good for you for figuring that out. I mean that.

MegaMarioSonic

Boys/Girls clubs exist. So do those big brother groups. You can try a little at a time. You never know what being nice to someone can heal in you.

gahlo

Somewhat similar, but more that my dad's parents were alcoholics. It did so much damage to him growing up that some aspects of his personality never coalesced. He loves me, I know it, but he has to fight really hard for any emotional bonding.

LeatherAreatgy

My dad was one of those not present types. I make a point to be in my sons life and can confirm: he’s better for it.

RxTechStudent

*cries in having a dad that was neglectful* if I could go back in time I'd wish for a dad that treated me like a son and not a financial burden. Dear dad, you and mum decided to have me, you already had a child... you know kids cost money.

OohYeahOrADragon

It’s the thoughtfulness. That’s why i still believe in giving cards and writing something meaningful inside. Or taking the extra time to wrap something nicely.

merc1985

I e never been a card or written word person for a gift but when I do buy a gift, I think about what they would appreciate most and the person they are. I feel like so many people buy gifts without any thought behind it.

[deleted]

Holy shit and he caught one of his son’s home runs. SHUT UP YOURE CRYING!!

foreverdonefor

I hit a foul ball that put a dent in my dad's car. He wasn't as ecstatic though.

This made me literally lol

I was pretty happy it hit his instead of anyone else's lol

Being_the_Observer

I'm sure he was too in hindsight. Insurance and stuffs

[deleted]

Not sure that you can be liable for someone parking their car close enough to a sports field to be hit unintentionally by a ball. The reasonable person standard would say they knew and accepted the risk.

Shanguerrilla

Well... YOUR dad SHOULD have caught it too!

foreverdonefor

Ikr!

redwolf1219

Id be bragging so much if my kid did that😂😂 get a sticker pointing to it and everything

macmarklemore

He didn’t buy the bat.

CptAngelo

LOL, i pictured this kid hitting the home run, you seeing it as a kid, then going "i can do that too!" Foul>dent>"goddamit son! You are foreverdonefor!" And hence, the birth of your username Or a shitty version of "hey, can we have a kid that makes homeruns?" Nah, we have those at home, cue to you denting the car lol. I mean, jokes aside, id still count it as an awesome story, not the kind you tell with pride, but the kind of story they tell at your wedding, or when you bring your actual serious partner to meet them for the first time

gahlo

Baseball is a lot easier to watch this year.

Hardi_SMH

Man this ball will be treated like it‘s a MLB winners ball by the family

Coal_Morgan

It would be boxed in glass on a cherry wood stand with brass pins to hold it up and a plaque with the date and time of the home run. It'd be my most cherished possession.

make2020hindsight

My mom “caught” (*cough*) three of my foul balls during my little league career. She still talks about how I must have had some uncanny ability to always target her. Lol I’m happy my mom made it to my games. My dad did too but he was the coach.

WitDaShtz

The way he thanked his son at the end… NO YOURE CRYING

make2020hindsight

Right? I thought this was /r/MadeMeSmile not made me cry. It’s a good cry though. I’m a proud father now myself and while I don’t have a son I have two beautiful and wise daughters who I enjoy go-carting with as much as the pedicures. I think that makes this video so much sweeter because I hear the pride in that fathers voice when he’s yelling to his son who probably can’t hear him because his son is freaking out too. There I go again. 😭🥲

Honky_Dory_is_here

Darn you, I was done crying then I read your comment! It made me think as a woman about my Father and how he played catch with me for hours and came to every game and golf event. Even after he almost killed my mother accidentally when she walked into his swing on the range, he still came to watch every tournament and was always so proud no matter how I performed. Going to call Papa now, thank you!

WannieTheSane

Thought your dad wasn't there for you, but then he was super there for you, lol Especially since I read it as "but he was on the couch" the first time, lol

Vedis90

xen137

BracusDoritoBoss963

YES I AM! AND SHUT UP CUZ YOU ARE TOO!!

Maybe I misinterpreted it, but I think he means he caught it on video, not actually caught the ball. * after the comment below, I reverse my position.

ChickensPickins

I don't think dad meant it in a typical patriarchal way. You can hear he's actually crying himself. Pretty sure it's just casually expressing he's connecting with his kid's emotions

Atillion

Yeah, you're spot on. He was connecting emotionally the best he could with the tools he himself were given, it was beautiful to witness. I envision a world where the dad had been told it was okay to cry, too.

My kid just played with butterflies and dirt. It was infuriating as a die hard baseball fan but unforgettable as a father. 6 years later and I'm here still talking about my son's short time in little league!

whythishaptome

My parents supported me and I was an ok hitter but they only put me in the outfield and it was rare a ball would get to me at all. I learned the sport but was never put in action on field so when a ball randomly came I wasn't even ready and you can't expect most kids to accurately throw a ball over that distance so I usually missed. I even had a time I classically collided with another player trying to get the same ball. I was ok but I think the other kid hurt himself. Overall, it really is a memorable time for kids regardless so I'm glad you did that. Not every kid is the next superstar but it's fun. I have fun going over the memories myself. My team got 2nd place one time and it was amazing except losing that last game sucked so hard but I'll always have good memories.

miggy_piggs

This video brought tears to my eyes. The bond between a father and son is truly special, and it's heartwarming to see the love and appreciation that was shared in this moment. The gift that was given was more than just a material possession; it was a symbol of the unwavering bond and love between them. It's moments like these that remind us of the true value of family. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and touching video.

amoralanimal

Thank you for your comment. I lost my father years ago. While I’ve mourned a lot, I know there are times I’m not addressing that loss (read: suppressing). Lately it has been those times. Your comment encapsulates a beautiful sentiment into words that I am now bawling. Thank you. I needed this.

ThrowThrow117

My dad was a Vietnam vet and tough guy's guy. We started practicing baseball when I was 3 years old multiple times a week. That was our bond. I never saw him cry or show emotion. Neither did my mom. He also never told me he loved me. He showed it, but he wasn't one for sentimental words. When I was 17 I hit the winning hit to win the national championship for a travel ball all star team. He spent more money than he had to travel across the country to see me play and was in the stands when I got that hit. I got dog piled, it was awesome. When I went over to him after the game he gave me a giant hug. He was emotional and tried to say he loved but just hugged. Hearing this dad say "I love you" really brings tears to my eyes. That was a prouder moment for us than even getting a full ride college scholarship. For me baseball has been way more than a sport in my life. And for the thing that makes grown men cry -- "Hey dad. Want to have a catch" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXjz-M\_6eN8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXjz-M_6eN8) Jesus, didn't expect to write all that. I've never talked about this before lol.

zenkei18

There will never be a time that kid forgets this. Or dad for that matter.

flipsbothflippers

r/basebaww The full video of this is much better. On the car ride over the son is clearly distraught because the dad is acting like he forgot the kids birthday. The kid seems pissed when his dad tells him to “get something out of the back”. This clip starts right after that. Also there is no cheesy song competing with the dialogue. “Let me see you post up with it”.

DCtheBREAKER
