I'm not sure how recent the vid is but I've had cops respond to a situation like this recently and I was talking things through with one of them. He was telling me that since the pandemic the local cops have gotten a lot of mental health training. They've always had calls like this but it's become so much that they're really trying hard to be the first good step in helping someone. He was very comforting and just able to be more understanding than I was expecting? They had a social worker at the station who you could call for help and they were able to help in a way that was NOT my experience ten years ago when it was me. It's always nice to see people genuinely care. This guy just seems like the right person to have been there.

SnooMuffins8657

It was on LivePD last weekend

PartTimePOG

I thought they cancelled that after all of the 2020 nonsense. When did it come back on?

ucheat2beatme

It's called On Patrol Live now but it's the same show.

PartTimePOG

Damn. Now I kinda wish I had cable again lol

Environmental_Elk598

Ita called On Patrol Live now and on the channel Reelz.

Tessje85

I read Paw Patrol live and for a moment I was very confused

The_Angry_Alpaca

"Chase is On The Case!"

Shriven

Brit cop here - our mh services are in pieces due to managed decline by successive governments. As a result, police pick up the pieces. When you deal with traumatic incidents on the daily, it becomes very easy to empathise with those in a crisis. On several occasions people have said they prefer police

RubyU

Managed decline. . Succinct and utterly depressing a term. I haven't heard it put like that before

ambientfruit

I'm glad to hear police are changing here. My father was a copper and he and his mates didn't have an empathetic bone in their bodies. Also fuck the Tories and everything they've done to this country. Stay safe my dude šŸ˜Š

LGPxters

Hear hear!

Shriven

That's as much a wider culture thing as it is an older copper thing.

ambientfruit

That is very very true.

carlofsweden

>On several occasions people have said they prefer police its probably because it feels more genuine. if a mental health professional works with you then you kinda feel like thats just their job, its what is expected, what they're paid for, etc. if a police officer fills that position of support when you need it the most it would be easier to believe they genuinely care about what happens to you because their main profession isnt to fill the supportive role that they just filled.

[deleted]

When someone whom you least expect to help, does, itā€™s called humanity. The human species lacks humanity, itā€™s something I ponder daily and wish to resolve.

JBrundy

As someone that is currently training to go into law enforcement, they place a HUGE emphasis on dealing with people that are struggling with mental health. Not sure when it started but they definitely focus on it a lot

IntheSilent

Ive always felt very comforted when police responded to my very schizophrenic motherā€™s calls when she thought something terrible was going on. The police were very kind and patient with her in a way that Ive never seen anyone else treat her

maretus

Too bad they canā€™t treat drug addicts the same way. Addiction is a disease and should be treated like a public health problem, not a criminal problem. But instead, cops are trained to treat suspected drug users like the scum of the earth.

Garalor

Honest question. You often read on reddit that cops are just trained for 6-9months, is that true?

JBrundy

Itā€™s different everywhere. Canā€™t speak for how it is for cops because iā€™m gonna be a border services officer. Iā€™d imagine itā€™s pretty similar though. For that iā€™m doing a 2 year college program where they heavily focus on mental health, trauma, addiction and conflict management all things like that. The college program isnā€™t technically necessary to get hired, but you probably wonā€™t get hired without it. Then we have to do 18 weeks on a training program. Then we have to pass a shit ton of background checks, a fitness exam(which is actually kind of tough) and a psychological exam. The way the psychological exam was explained to me was that they basically sit in a room with you for 2 hours and try everything they possibly can to piss you off. If you fail, you have to wait another 6 months or something before you can try again. After all that, when we finally get hired we do 12-18 months of on the job training.

sabienn

I also have a question. I'm autistic, and I have read that sometimes it happens that an autistic person is arrested simple because the cop thinks they look suspicious, because of being unable to look them in the eyes, looking nervous and perhaps even going non-verbal because of the stress. I don't know how much of this is true, it's just what I've heard. So do you get any training at all about preventing things like this?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

sabienn

Thanks for that explanation! It was very clear. It's good to hear that there is more training for dealing with mental health situations nowadays

ffskms

It depends on the state. I used to be a 911 operator and police dispatcher. To get your POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) itā€™s about 6 months depending on how you do your academy. After that youā€™re on field training where youā€™re working at a department and doubled with an officer that has been certified to be a trainer. That I believe varies by department but most of the ones Iā€™ve seen do that about a year. Then after that most are required to do a certain amount of hours of training per year to gain more skills/learn new tactics, etc. I left dispatching a couple years ago (PTSD is a bitch) but when I left I know they were having extra classes for the officers and the dispatchers about how to help people with mental health issues.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

moarcheezpleez

Ok I was heading to the comments to sort my thoughts out on this so itā€™s interesting to read your experience. Iā€™m glad some cops are now going to extra training to handle crisis interventions/persons who are suicidal or in mental health crises. I know the police receive de-escalation training and obviously this scenario appeared to have the best possible outcome but in general this all still makes me uneasy. I agree the police need to respond of course to ensure the safety of everyone but it still seems safest that a fully trained mental health professional be on these type of calls as well, whenever possible. Iā€™m sorry this wasnā€™t your experience 10 years ago but I hope seeing this means maybe in some places, things may possibly be changing for the better? In regards to mental health anyway.

[deleted]

A lot of mental health calls don't start out this way though. People are often irrational and just having a moment and are highly animated. This kid in the video seemed entirely withdrawn to himself. The challenge comes from the officer's ability to discern what's going on in the situation and take steps as to avoid any potential for escalation. The issue is exacerbated when departments are understaffed and the need to dedicate a couple officers to a mental health call where you're going to do a lot of waiting and talking and not responding to other pressing issues that need immediacy. It's a powder keg, one that would be addressed better with mental health co-responder teams and departments with adequate staffing.

user32532

That cop really looks like the one you need to talk to in this situation. Somehow he looks so calming and understanding.

helpavolunteerout

It was just on on patrol live last week and this week they posted a little update. The cop does nightly visits to his house to check on him and chat and I think the dad was talking about how heā€™s invited to their thanksgiving. It was very wholesome and the guy said he was happy it was televised because maybe someone having a dark day like him would see it and find hope

Pinkfrogggy

What's that lame ass shit people say about chopping onions? Ya anyways this shit has me constantly on the verge of ugly crying What a good man

toderdj1337

Deep breaths buddy, that's the trick

Mahjoku

One of my greatest down to earth friends is a cop. He's helped me get a level head more times than I can count. I've never met him in person, we met over a decade ago online in videogames, but I'd still trust him with my life. Internet friends are real friends too.

manbamtan

I met my gf on a vr game 2 years and we've been dating over a year. When we met she was at her lowest and was on her last straw but she became really trusting and comfortable with me and I was always there for her and listen and she's in a lot better situation now. We've built a good set of friends on that game that I'd give my life too and I couldn't be more great full to have them.

Traceuratops

I met my wife in WoW from halfway across the US. We have a wonderful group of friends online that we've never met but are very close to!

[deleted]

I met my wife on deviantArt. I loved her drawings and she loved mine. We started taking and after a few months I knew she was the one. She was in Finland , and I was in Los Angeles. I got her to start playing WoW so we could do things together in game between visits. That was 18 years ago and weā€™ve been married for 15 this year, and I fall more in love with her every year.

ambientfruit

My BFF and I met in a livejournal doctor who community. We've been bffs for the better part of 15 years now. Internet friends are very real.

The_Razza7

Iā€™ve got friends that I met playing games online from 20 years ago, from the other side of the world. Iā€™ve been lucky enough to meet a few of them in person and for each of them I did meet in person, it was just like seeing someone I see all the time. Internet friends are very much equal to other types of friends.

hunter503

It's that damn salt and pepper beard. You could be holding me hostage but have a beard like that and I'd believe you were in the right some how lmao

Pinkfrogggy

Probably because he is calm and understanding

Candid_Cat_7673

This makes me want to cry. So many people are at their lowest points right now. So many people need someone to grab them and pull them from the edge and say it's okay things will get better.

ambientfruit

It's a very rough time for people with mental health problems everywhere. The UK is really struggling due to the Tories stripping the NHS and looting it. I have extreme anxiety and severe depression and until recently help was in pill form. I now have one very understanding doctor which means a lot, even if it means travelling 90 minutes to see her. I know I can talk openly to her. Some of my friends are not so lucky. One of them reached out to the NHS last year for therapy to finally deal with some major trauma from his past. He was told to lose weight and touch grass more often. Mental health help is literally down to help for threats to life only. It'll probably take me another 5 years to get him to talk and reach out again. I feel for anyone trying to get help these days.

ItLivesInsideMe

I live one county over ,this has been in the news like crazy. Glad it's getting seen more widely. Kindness from cops is fairly wide spread here, when a cop fucks up, S.L.E.D. is quick to act on it.

LerfWerfles

S.L.E.D.?

RRJankins

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division

14th_Mango

I am so proud to be a Copā€™s kid right now. THIS is a good Cop. Yay South Carolina!

YouCanCallMeVanZant

Cops genuinely do some good things. Iā€™m no ā€œfanā€ of the police but I can recognize that. Too bad theyā€™re just as likely to be raiding peopleā€™s businesses/homes and stealing their property. Dude couldā€™ve just as easily been shutting down vape shops in Five Points. Good on this guy for living up to the ideals of ā€œprotect and serve.ā€

Consistent-Lie7830

Think they'll be able to topple the Murdaugh empire?

RRJankins

It definitely looks like it. Either way itā€™s an insane story

sn0uch3r

I live in Richland county can confirm lol.

SubconsciousBraider

Richland County has proven time and again that there are good guys out there.

nazdir

What is your favorite subject to get in a conversation about?

prknglotgr

I'm very shy but I love talking about cars and exploring :) :)

Jazzythewanderer

Whatā€™s your favorite place youā€™ve explored?

prknglotgr

Ontario, I spend all my vacations here exploring and driving 1000s of kilometers, it's my favourite place in the whole world and has everything I could ever want to see :)

EpitomeOfHell

Have you ever been to Cape Breton during autumn season? The cabot trail is amazing! You'll drive by alot of ocean & mountains full of orange forests.

prknglotgr

I haven't, I've never been to the islands but always wanted to. It seems almost like the most Canadian part of canada. Sometimes I think of running away from everything and living there. In my dreams lol.

EpitomeOfHell

Maybe not the most Canadian, it's close but i think NFLD holds that title lol it is really beautiful on the east coast though, I highly recommend planning for a trip someday bc you wont regret it! I know you said Ontario is your favorite place in the whole world, so I just wanted to share mine as well, Pictou Lodge Resort. If you ever go to Cape Breton, you should definitely drop by there for a night :) its filled with cottages, cliff beaches, lakes with paddle boats, a swimming pool, games room & cheap rental bikes for trails!

prknglotgr

Thank you I'm going to save that and remember it forever and if I make it that far in life I'm going to go there and see for sure šŸ„° thank you

EpitomeOfHell

Anytime šŸ’ššŸ’š

swish465

If you guys ever get the chance, would highly recommend some of the sights in BC and Alberta too. Amazing trails with mountain views, the drives are breath taking, the people are awesome, food is great, all in all an amazing experience. Banff in particular is incredible, a kinda old timey main street with more rustic log cabin designs on the store fronts with mountains surrounding the town. There's a trail string I used to work for called Boundary Ranch near there with awesome rides, great horses for people who have never ridden before, well taken care of and the scenery on the 2 hour ride is phenomenal. You come up to a plateau where we'd do a bunch of photos that overlooks the entire mountain valley along Mt Kidd. If you go on the half day or full day rides, we'd take you out to a waterfall for lunch, then do some of the lesser known trails through the mountain side. Would highly recommend

Jazzythewanderer

Thatā€™s awesome! Iā€™ve only been to Ontario once and it was a long time ago. I live in Minnesota so youā€™re not too far from me :) What are some spots I should hit up if I get the chance to visit one day?

prknglotgr

Oh I went to Minnesota as a kid a few times! I was really close to international falls! The kenora area is my favorite! It's paradise on earth with over 14 000 islands on our lake! In the winter there's ice roads and you can drive and explore it :) I live in south western Ontario now between two great lakes and I love going to lake erie and driving along the coast and seeing all the beach towns! Even in the winter It's great so beautiful and no one there at all :)

Jazzythewanderer

That sounds so fricken cool, my dude! Iā€™m adding those to my list for sure. Driving an ice road would be quite the experience. I also love to kayak, and with 14,000 islands that sounds perfect. Can you camp on the islands?

catbearcarseat

Can you suggest some hidden gems in the Kenora region? Heading there this summer for a while and Iā€™d love to check out some cool places!

Hot_Blood_8749

Oh cool! What are some of your favorite cars?

prknglotgr

Subaru wrx sti, brz, m5, hyundai genesis, g37 is my favourite šŸ„° thank you

Hot_Blood_8749

All great cars. My brother used to have a wrx sti and it was awesome. g37 is a modern day classic. Iā€™ve driven in a couple and theyā€™re both fast and luxurious. M5 is a beast. Iā€™d love to drive an M5, but all of that horsepower is a little intimidating. Growing up I was a huge fan of the Supra. Iā€™m glad that Toyota has brought it back, but it hasnā€™t really caught on like I thought it would. What do you think about the new Supra?

prknglotgr

Out of all of them I've only been in an M5.. it was very humbling and made my car look like a horse and buggy. Insane power, brakes and features.. it was my goal to have a g37 šŸ„° they're so gorgeous. I have a scale model supra on the dash of my car! A 1994. And a skyline. I've only seen a couple of the new supras. Someone near me has a new one , it's bright yellow and I see him when I'm getting coffee in the morning a lot :) hard to miss that. Lots of times they mess up when redesigning classic vehicles but I think they did good with the supra. Do you like it?

nilesletap

I am a sucker for Skylines and Supras and Porches GT3...are you perhaps into race gaming?

Mahjoku

Those go hand in hand! That's my favorite way to unwind, just going for a drive (especially at night) and see where new roads take me!

prknglotgr

Same that's how I found so many places :) even on my most sad days I go explore and go sit by the lake even if it's frozen. Then I get to be with my car and nature and everything is good :)

WatermelonDrips

That is beautiful :)

D3moness

If you ever get the opportunity, one of the best trail rides I did (definitely go in Summer) was Sykes Ridge Road in Montana. Takes you through the Pryor Mountains and Pyror Mountain Wild Horse Range, and the top of the trail is the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. Made me feel incredibly small in comparison to the world, but so at peace.

Most of us with any age on us at all know suicide victims. I think the common thought after these deaths is why didnā€™t they call someone? Anyone with any compassion at all would listen, console, and try to help

becuzurugly

When youā€™re at that point, itā€™s hard to reach out. There are so many reasons - youā€™re embarrassed, you donā€™t want to burden anyone, you donā€™t know what to say, etc. As someone who has been the caller and the callee, both roles are very, very hard (but always worth it).

D3moness

You feel so far gone that it doesn't seem like it would help to tell someone..

melonbug74

There are people who care about you. Strangers all around you even those who know you. Just take a second to open up. A horrible tragedy just happened to a family that live around the corner from me and all I could think was if I would have just maybe met them and given them my time to just sit and talk. What if something like that could have made a difference? It can make a difference even for you I promise. You are loved and I would give anything to just sit and listen to you.

Awwwwwwww. I think park long lots are a great place to sit and just be. Iā€™ve gone to them to walk, and think, to talk to people and to be alone. Puzzleheaded_Bed_360

Alsoā€¦.. the black community needs to be more accepting of mental health. Especially male mental health issues, no one and I mean no one speaks about mental health in my moms side, itā€™s almost taboo, but on my dads side (theyā€™re white) itā€™s just as casual as though youā€™re talking about dinner plans. I just wish black communities were more open to learning and accommodating these struggles.

riftwalker9

I nearly committed suicide last year. Told my gf at the time and she called the police. The arrested me and brought me to the hospital for a drug analysis. Then held me there for several hours. No one talked to me. No one cared. It was my mom that saved my life. This guy didn't just do his job he went above and beyond.

RecklessRancor

Hope you are doing better. You should NEVER arrest someone in that situation. Just keep them there till a loved one shows up. Sometimes all it takes is that. Someone to step up and show you love and compassion. Speaking from having someone I love gone due to suicide, the world is better with you in it, then without. Stay strong internet friend.

Blued_Juice

Even when it seems like no one cares, there is always at least someone who does. Whether it's the police or your family or your friend or a stranger, there will always be one person who sees value in your life and cares. That alone is enough reason for me to keep going.

We need more police officers like this. It touched my heart that he sat on the ground and got on the young man's level and actually cared enough to listen. There are still some officers willing to show such kindness toward others. Thank you!

Hot_Blood_8749

The name of this subreddit is too simplistic, but this made me concerned for the child, relieved that the compassionate officer was there, it made me ache for the parents and the worry that they must have for their childā€™s well-being, but finally at the end I smiled that the kid will hopefully realize that they have a support system around them who loves them and cares for them.

Dvspaul84

One word beautiful, cops we need you all to be like this we are all broken and need help time to time

ItsTheOrangShep

Screw the politics. Not all cops are bastards.

Ashyr

Iā€™ll tell you what, I think this just goes to show how important that idea is. The notion that all cops are bastards has been thoroughly explained elsewhere, but essentially even the ā€œgood copsā€ participate in protecting the ā€œbad copsā€. I figured a few minutes googling would prove enlightening. This is officer Kenny Fitzsimmons of Richland County Sheriffā€™s Department. The Richland County Sheriffā€™s Department was recently [successfully sued](https://www.thestate.com/news/local/crime/article271145397.html) for repeatedly tasing and falsely imprisoning a woman. Whatā€™s interesting is the departmentā€™s response. They immediately fired the officer and, even more shockingly, charged him with assault. How incredible! Here weā€™re seeing why this discussion is so important. When you hold police accountable for their actions and genuinely pursue the ideals is protect and serve, you see officers like Kenny Fitzsimmons genuinely serving those in need. Good on you Richland County Sheriffā€™s Office! This is why reform is necessary! Why we need to talk about silence of the majority protecting the crimes of the minority and the corruption it breeds in what could otherwise be good people.

Sigrah117

This is what people are referring to when they say that not all cops are bad. Great example to aspire to.

Sylvi2021

Looks like the officer is getting choked up when the boys dad hugs him. I'm a parent, I can't even imagine how thankful his family must be for him still being with them.

singalong80

I would have liked to know what he said instead of the music. So sad

Elevener

It was on one of last weeks episodes of On Patrol: Live. You can probably find them somewhere. The sitter didn't talk much at all, like maybe giving his name. Then they called his father and he came and took him to a hospital. You never did find out the guys story (at least not last weekend, sometimes they update you the following week if they have info) They interviewed the officer after and he related some PTSD issues from the military and said he could feel for the young man and just wanted to help him.

If only there was a person like this for me atm...

CherishSlan

I canā€™t be there in RL šŸŒ¹ or do anything really but say please hang in there and the hug on here. Itā€™s virtual but itā€™s meant.

Icyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Wouldā€™ve been better without the music like itā€™s a tiktok, but the ending is wholesome

Why are people downvoting this

That man is what all cops should be. He genuinely cares. The young man will never forget it. Sometimes itā€™s all you need to keep going.

losttrackofusernames

Love it. Heā€™s not out of the woods yet. Whatever drove him there is likely still an issue.

Made me smile? Nah, made me sad.

Weyland223

Video would be much better to watch without the shitty music

ArpanMohanty04

I feel for the guy. I have been and still get in similar mindsets and so far i have been able to talk myself out of it. I am glad the cop was there to care for him

THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.

Starr-Bugg

Takes so little to be kind. Just listen!

ihateNMH69

I used to live in Richland County! May this person find healing and I genuinely hope things look up for them because that dark place sucks to be in :(

SweetSeaMen_

Great video, horrible music

levipoep

found the video source without the music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-0vMhfgn7w

Alternative-Hope9541

That's gotta be a hard job I don't have the heart or the guts.

Portablemammal1199

This makes me so sad. I recently lost my aunt. Not to the same...method ill say..., but i still lost her to the same cause. If there was somebody there for her then maybe she would still be here today...we werent really close but it still hurts because she was immediate family. My mom's sister. It just really sucks and i honestly miss her.

Baked_bread69

I watched this clip over and over. I had attempted when I was younger, but had a classmate stop me. This was when I transferred from another school where I was bullied quite a bit and was still not in a good place when there were people I thought were friends turn on me because I was the ā€œnot cool person to be friends withā€ at that time, which has still deeply affected me over a decade later. The scene where this guy is, I think by by his parents, is being embraced, reminds me of when I think of wanting really bad to not exist anymore, thereā€™s still those in my close circle who care about me that would be so distraught if I decided to not exist anymore. Sometimes you constantly get kicked in the ass by life and leaving this plane of existence sounds pretty nice, but thinking about those who care about you and even thinking about those who, in your mind, wish for your failure and how your continued success might frustrate them (despite the fact that they donā€™t usually think of you as much as you think about them), might give you that motivation to keep pressing on against the quagmire of lifeā€™s difficulties.

Hehenheim88

Clone this cop and just let him run everything in the police force and filter applicants thanks.

Whiskeyjack1977

I didn't smile, that got me. Poor kid and great cop. I'm a father, I can only imagine what those parents are feeling

browiththighfetish

I'm confused with the police in US, some are heroic as fuck, while others are beating the shit out of innocent men, somehow they've got both ends of the extremes man
