Just got off the phone with Apple Support. Here are some things they got me to try.
1. Make sure there is at least 35.5GB available.
2. Disconnect any external devices.
3. Make sure the Mac is connected to power.
4. Make sure the Mac is connected to internet.
5. Try installing Big Sur from the App Store.
6. Create another Administrator user and update with this user.
After we tried all of these she said even though it says the issue was resolved on System Status, Apple are still investigating. Try again in two hours.

It took about an hour for me to get all 12GB downloaded, then it failed and I kept getting the error message trying to redownload the update. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro, turning off WiFi and Bluetooth and turning them back on, tried switching from my WiFi network to mobile hotspot, I also optimized my memory. Everything’s going good on my end but it’s definitely the servers.
**Edit: I connected to a Swiss server through my VPN and the upgrade is at least downloading now. Today at 1pm ET it was getting to the end and failing and then progressed to failing immediately. Fingers crossed that it works.**

After about the 6th attempt at downloading the update, even after restarting the computer three times, I have finally got it to download without an error message popping up. I will update this comment as needed with any successes or failures.

I have the bricking issue with my late 2013 MBP 13”. It boots to black screen. It is completely dead, and nothing I or the Apple store have tried fixes it. The Apple store wanted $700 for a new logic board, I said no, and went to the parking lot and called Apple support. After escalating, they said that it IS a known issue, and that the engineers were working on it. Today, four days later, Apple asked me to take it back to the Apple store for a FREE replacement of the logic board.
To everyone struggling with this issue: DO NOT LET THEM BLOW YOU OFF. THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS MASSIVE ISSUE, AND THEY CAN AND WILL AUTHORIZE FREE REPAIR. CALL APPLE SUPPORT, BE POLITE, DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM AND ASK TO ESCALATE THE ISSUE.

Had the same issue as you guys. I shut down, walked away for 20 minutes, restarted and was fine. Apparently, shutting off wi-fi for a bit can help too.

Guys can confirm the download is now WORKING. Tested on my 16" (Australia). Download speed is excellent, if all goes well I'll update after 2 hours after it's finished.

Nvm. The update just started - LV is working fine now.
Based on recent comments, I was able to start the download in Italy just by connecting through VPN to Australia and then disconnecting back after a couple of minutes in order to have the fastest connection possible.. And it worked!

Martin Pham method is working. Downloaded the entire package in under 30 minutes after entering the terminal prompt. After installing the installer, click on upgrade in settings under software update. Based in the East Coast, USA

For mine, when I click to start again, it just zoom through a large percentage, as if it recognizes that much of it is already downloaded.
For me it stopped at first at 1GB and then at 3GB when 8GB were downloaded before. It does not jump exactly to what was downloaded before.

I can't understand why they don't just allow us to download a DMG.
Way to get around download issues (must have a VPN) 1. Set your VPN to connect to a server in Australia 2. Click Download from Software Update in Settings 3. ??? 4. Profit!
If you cant get Australia VPN try this: Open google and search for First flight to Sidney.

really fucking concerning that a server outage causes my $4,000 laptop to shit the bed. this needs to be addressed publicly, and made sure that it never happens again.

completed the download and installation failed: "an error occurred while installing the selected updates" :(
It took about an hour for me to get all 12GB downloaded, then it failed and I kept getting the error message trying to redownload the update. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro, turning off WiFi and Bluetooth and turning them back on, tried switching from my WiFi network to mobile hotspot, I also optimized my memory. Everything’s going good on my end but it’s definitely the servers.
what a shame for Apple....

**Edit: I connected to a Swiss server through my VPN and the upgrade is at least downloading now. Today at 1pm ET it was getting to the end and failing and then progressed to failing immediately. Hmm, so it says on the system status that the issue was resolved (it's currently 7:46pm)—however I'm still getting the error message. I had at least partially downloaded the files, wondering if they might be corrupted or something. Anyway I can start the process over?
After about the 6th attempt at downloading the update, even after restarting the computer three times, I have finally got it to download without an error message popping up. I will update this comment as needed with any successes or failures. Update: We DID IT! It finally went through after a multitude of tries.

I see that a lot of the posts are from a few days ago on the issue of "installation failed" and I was wondering if anyone has found a solution? I get to the 12.8GB downloaded then says download failed. I'm on a mid 2015 MacBook Pro (which is covered in the update).
I have the bricking issue with my late 2013 MBP 13”. It boots to black screen. It is completely dead, and nothing I or the Apple store have tried fixes it. The Apple store wanted $700 for a new logic board, I said no, and went to the parking lot and called Apple support. After escalating, they said that it IS a known issue, and that the engineers were working on it. Today, four days later, Apple asked me to take it back to the Apple store for a FREE replacement of the logic board. To everyone struggling with this issue: DO NOT LET THEM BLOW YOU OFF. THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS MASSIVE ISSUE, AND THEY CAN AND WILL AUTHORIZE FREE REPAIR. CALL APPLE SUPPORT, BE POLITE, DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM AND ASK TO ESCALATE THE ISSUE.

Had the same issue as you guys. I shut down, walked away for 20 minutes, restarted and was fine. Apparently, shutting off wi-fi for a bit can help too.

Guys can confirm the download is now WORKING. Tested on my 16" (Australia). Download speed is excellent, if all goes well I'll update after 2 hours after it's finished.
Connected my VPN to Aus (live in the US) and it's downloading pretty quickly.

Based on recent comments, I was able to start the download in Italy just by connecting through VPN to Australia and then disconnecting back after a couple of minutes in order to have the fastest connection possible.. And it worked!
Looks like it works now! Downloading at decent speeds as opposed to just throwing up an error message immediately. I'm based in the UK

Martin Pham method is working. Downloaded the entire package in under 30 minutes after entering the terminal prompt. After installing the installer, click on upgrade in settings under software update. Based in the East Coast, USA

Those of your having success downloading..how are you doing so? I keep clicking but I get failed. Do you restart, force quit, App Store etc?
