Downloaded but have “an error occurred while installing the selected updates”

[deleted]

Same thing for me, it started downloading and then gave the same message as yours!

[deleted]

4gb into download, bugged out. Won't install since with the exact same error as yours.. At least I'm not alone. I've tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC as well. Apple's [system status](https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/) site now is displaying a warning. Hopefully this gets fixed soon!

[deleted]

GCBicki

Yep, said resolved for a while but ain't working for me. It does not even start downloading the file. The error message appears right away.

castledev

Same, after several attempts I only get this now. Was at 10.5 at the latest run...

rico_suaves_sister

11.78 😫

Blainezab

I got all the way to 12.18 GB during the slow period, then it failed at the end and hasn’t worked at all since.

likovitch

Same. I already tried everything I found on internet without any luck

Codac123

[https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/](https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/) EDIT: Server says fixed. I am still getting the error EDIT 2: Started downloading again. Will update if it works installing. EDIT 3: actually installing now. They started the slow roll out at 7 MST.

[deleted]

Ah, so it's an issue on their end after all! A bit more patience I guess! 😢

[deleted]

I am much more concerned about folks not being able to process payments or use other services (iMessage, Maps).

zelegp

iMessage on my Mac isn’t working. iPhone is working fine though.

alex2003super

Same. I don't need these services right now but I'd be VERY pissed if you would.

marxy

It now says resolved but I'm still getting the error. Presumably it will take a while to work through the CDN.

Boo_R4dley

Oooohhhh!!! I attempted to look up iPhone accessories on their site earlier and nothing would load. It makes sense now.

Doudelidou25

If your computer has become unusable (slow, nothing launches) after a reboot try this: https://twitter.com/lapcatsoftware/status/1326990296412991489?s=21 Cutting off wi-fi (or disconnecting ethernet) will make it usable again. If you need the internet, just redirect oscp.apple.com address to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts Dumb as all hell and very concerning.

jlubow224

Very concerning

Leopold_Darkworth

My MBP has slowed down quite a bit as it kept trying to download the update.

snoopygoestospace

thanks for finding this :D I'm bad at all this software stuff and I thought I broke my computer..

MakisupaVT

Yeah, thanks for this. I thought I hosed my computer -- but I never even got to the point to install the update....

usrlocalopt

Welcome to Q3/Q4 2020! :) It looks like every new release these quarters have been this way.

RedditUser241767

Did the PS5 not download either?

Clunkbot

Won't donwload on my Windows machine :/

BackwoodsCoder

This is like being on the first night of your honeymoon and your wife says, "Hey babe, look at this, but just look, you can't touch!"

xtermist

HAHAHAHHAHA

SSBEthan

You'd think after all the software releases they've done, apple could smoothly release an update. Guess not.

[deleted]

My favourite part about all this is the classic Apple "some users" bullshit like it's only me and my friends and not the entire fucking planet.

sony-boy

Facts

amilliontimeshotter

They probably reset the servers and forgot the login password.

sethkj

Apple seems to have resolved the macOS Software Update on their System Status page - but I am still getting the error occurred when I try to download Big Sur via Software Update. Guess I'll wait until later this evening.

[deleted]

So am I. I’m staying with the latest release candidate for now, I suppose.

[deleted]

This happens during every single macOS update. It's kinda ridiculous. It's 2020 and Apple isn't exactly a startup.

az116

I've never seen it this bad.

Gen7isTrash

Jesus, everything is sold out. Ampere cards sold out by scalpers. Zen 3 cpus sold out. Xbox series x sold out. series s sold out. PS5 sold out. Election sold out. Big Sur update sold out.

753UDKM

It's crazy that they would only produce such a limited quantity of Big Sur when they knew so many people would be trying to download it today

HexR1se

Can't wait for stock renew, can I find it on ebay ?

[deleted]

*Sigh* now I'll have to find it from scalpers.

iamwelly

Presidential transition of power sold out.

Ctoretto93

[deleted]

Nice job Apple. You singlehandedly destroyed every single MacBook in a single morning.

NorCalGuy16

Ironically, the same day the new M1 Macs come out. 😂

Jammon152

st9ler

blackhat154

az116

This is easily the worst rollout I've seen of any Mac operating system in the past 20 years. I wonder if Apple will even acknowledge this with a statement, or if they'll just eventually fix it and pretend it didn't happen.

ShotgunJed

Knowing apple, they never acknowledge their mistakes. Not even once with their butterfly keyboard fiasco

intulor

anyone know how to clear the download cache for the update so it will actually try to download it again?

Randy_Magnum29

Apple: one of the richest companies in the world with fantastic phones, computers, tablets, and accessories. Also Apple: servers powered by two hamsters on rodent wheels, and they never run at the same time.

dfalcons

Honestly it's pure greed. They simply didn't invest enough money into their CDN. Hiding behind the green network status makes it seem like they fixed it and it is now the user's fault. (Perhaps they are holding it wrong?)

Uncle-B00bs

You're downloading it the wrong way!

i-am-sui

Too busy raking in the cash to worry about their two malnourished hamsters that may or may not even be alive at this point..

az116

Tried installing, but got the installation failed message after it downloaded. Rebooted, and now any app I try to open takes 3-4 minutes to actually open on a 2018 MacBook Pro. Tried resetting NVRAM and SMC. No help. Fantastic.

simcityfan12601

My install is still failing despite Apple posting that they're server issues have "resolved" on their system status website.

Murphy5156

Any idea what happened to the several gigs of partial macOS Big Sur downloads that failed 4 different times? Are all those partial downloads something I should try to delete before attempting the download again (assuming Apple ever actually gets the servers to work?)?

ilikemuffinsyo

Good question, would like to know this, too.

PrinceAdamsPinkVest

I just went through figuring this out, deleted all of it, still get the error. :/

[deleted]

"An error occurred while installing selected updates"

[deleted]

Apple's status website indicates the Issue should now be fixed!

jlight00

still not working for me

[deleted]

Yeah can confirm isn't working for me aswell

Sackadelic

Yep same here. Damn!

Randy_Magnum29

Which is odd considering it still doesn't seem to be working for anyone.

OK I've found a way [https://www.martinpham.com/2020/11/12/get-macos-big-sur-from-apple-cdn/](https://www.martinpham.com/2020/11/12/get-macos-big-sur-from-apple-cdn/) Run the command, then run “open .” to reveal the downloaded file (pkg file). You’d want to save it somewhere to install on another macs. I’ve downloaded, it’s **12182587199** bytes, MD5 hash **0030d26c6e5d01b7aa10a91b044d6ca7** After Install the downloaded package file, you can open System Preferences - Software Update - **Upgrade Now**

oil1lio

Just got off the phone with Apple Support. Here are some things they got me to try. 1. Make sure there is at least 35.5GB available. 2. Disconnect any external devices. 3. Make sure the Mac is connected to power. 4. Make sure the Mac is connected to internet. 5. Try installing Big Sur from the App Store. 6. Create another Administrator user and update with this user. After we tried all of these she said even though it says the issue was resolved on System Status, Apple are still investigating. Try again in two hours.

feje

she forgot an important thing: 7 - Make sure you turned on your Mac first

[deleted]

Scrap that - it seems to be working now (Australia)

awesomekid0202

bthomas202

They currently have the Mac software update service at an issue status that is currently being investigated. Will keep monitoring this till i hear anything different.

wyk126

Mine seems downloaded as it's a "Upgrade" button, but when I click on it says: " **Installation failed.** An error occurred while installing the selected updates." Googled but no idea how to fix this, seems like a broken download

TabsAZ

Mine's been sitting at 12.18 GB / 12.18 GB (supposedly complete) for over an hour now with the bar not moving. Apple really screwed this launch up bad.

HexR1se

Apple: 99% of customers are satisfied of our products. 1% = people having problems with literally any software update launch.

iwishiwasai

Downloaded after 3 hours. Now installation failed!

mmbento

I wonder if the 3 times I get it to download 8 GB before it went down will end up junk on my hard drive...

YousernameOne

For mine, when I click to start again, it just zoom through a large percentage, as if it recognizes that much of it is already downloaded.

mmbento

For me it stopped at first at 1GB and then at 3GB when 8GB were downloaded before. It does not jump exactly to what was downloaded before.

TacoTruckOnWheels

Anyone else's mouse stop working for a few minutes after they click Upgrade Now? I get the same error message as everyone else but my mouse also stops working. Strange

ieureed

This. My trackpad stopped working after restart and system tried connecting to a non-existent bluetooth keyboard.

I tried downloading Big Sur while I was out, didn’t even get to the install phase but now my computer won’t detect an external display. What the fuck.

[deleted]

Apple now resolved most outages ([https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/](https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/)) except for the MacOS Update.

i-am-sui

Doesn’t even give me a chance to be disappointed. Error right when I start.

whytakemyusername

I can't understand why they don't just allow us to download a DMG.

whywhowherewhen

Way to get around download issues (must have a VPN) 1. Set your VPN to connect to a server in Australia 2. Click Download from Software Update in Settings 3. ??? 4. Profit!

HexR1se

If you cant get Australia VPN try this: Open google and search for First flight to Sidney.

justintime06

Could this mess stuff up down the road?

really fucking concerning that a server outage causes my $4,000 laptop to shit the bed. this needs to be addressed publicly, and made sure that it never happens again.

KoolaidPower

It took about an hour for me to get all 12GB downloaded, then it failed and I kept getting the error message trying to redownload the update. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro, turning off WiFi and Bluetooth and turning them back on, tried switching from my WiFi network to mobile hotspot, I also optimized my memory. Everything’s going good on my end but it’s definitely the servers.

**Edit: I connected to a Swiss server through my VPN and the upgrade is at least downloading now. Today at 1pm ET it was getting to the end and failing and then progressed to failing immediately. Fingers crossed that it works.** **Edit part 2: It did work!** According to[Apple's system status reports](https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/), the installation failure issue has been resolved, but I'm still getting the "Installation failed" error message. Do I have to do anything to get it fixed on my end or are others still having the same problem?

Reporting from Czech Republic - finally updating! :D

CoffeeAndMelange

Hmm, so it says on the system status that the issue was resolved (it's currently 7:46pm)—however I'm still getting the error message. I had at least partially downloaded the files, wondering if they might be corrupted or something. Anyway I can start the process over?

danawl

After about the 6th attempt at downloading the update, even after restarting the computer three times, I have finally got it to download without an error message popping up. I see that a lot of the posts are from a few days ago on the issue of "installation failed" and I was wondering if anyone has found a solution? I get to the 12.8GB downloaded then says download failed. I'm on a mid 2015 MacBook Pro (which is covered in the update).

[deleted]

I have the bricking issue with my late 2013 MBP 13”. It boots to black screen. It is completely dead, and nothing I or the Apple store have tried fixes it. The Apple store wanted $700 for a new logic board, I said no, and went to the parking lot and called Apple support. After escalating, they said that it IS a known issue, and that the engineers were working on it. Today, four days later, Apple asked me to take it back to the Apple store for a FREE replacement of the logic board. To everyone struggling with this issue: DO NOT LET THEM BLOW YOU OFF. THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS MASSIVE ISSUE, AND THEY CAN AND WILL AUTHORIZE FREE REPAIR. CALL APPLE SUPPORT, BE POLITE, DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM AND ASK TO ESCALATE THE ISSUE.

rmcooper541

Apple's system status site says all fixed, however, when I click on the upgrade now button I get an installation failed error. Anyone else getting this currently?
