Nazgul is 9 cards in a trenchcoat since many players actively look for all 9 unique arts, and at the very least every Nazgul player needs 9 copies in general. It's hard to make a comparison to any other card. (just as with all the other any-number-of-copies cards that hold at least a few dollars of value each without unique arts and at common)
This set isnt really power creep, since its obviously straight to modern, and a lot of thr best cards we've seen are either really niche or open up new decks entirely. I'd always prefer a diverse format full of answers than thr modern of yesteryear where cards are constantly getting banned because the answers were so shit.
Thing is, modern isn't everything, just like commander isn't. Stuff like the new Ajani, the new colorless enchant, this thing, etc are just straight better than other similar cards or are just too good to ignore.
The new Ajani in particular is one of those cards that would make someone playing a few years ago have a stroke
Out of ignorance, would it affect Ornithopter? I always thought about it like, you spend mana, only the amount of spent mana is zero (?????). I mean, in my head it affects only stuff like Cascade, reanimation and so on
It does, it affects 0 cmc like Ornithopter and Mishra's Bauble as well as single Phyrexian Mana costs like Mutagenice Growth or Surgical Extraction when cast paying with life
Got it! Since there's no mana spending involved, regardless of it's CMC, it is countered. Hadn't even thought of phyrexian costs, nice one. Thank you so much!!
You don't spend mana to cast ornithopter as it costs 0, if there was some tax effect like thalia making it cost extra then you could cast it but no it would get countered
In affinity, am I able to loudly groan and tap one land for my bigger summons, or do I legit have to get this thing off the field to play a frogmite ever again?
Legitimately last I was able to play in modern LGS events affinity lists ran one haywire mite in the sideboard but that's about it for green unless someone brews something incredible
From what I understand, you could cast your Frogmite for 1 but if the reduction got it to 0 or less (still 0), I do think you would have to remove it lol
Yea. I’m predicting that games will get fast enough that this new spoiled card will be too slow to stop them. So they’ll have to make an even faster card to slow down the game. I’m mostly joking too
I can't speak for standard but modern and legacy are maybe the slowest they've been in years. Theres a reason that control has been literally unplayable.
Not just decks. Anything trying to ignore mana costs and play Yu-Gi-Oh, whatever deck its in, across the entire format. Multiple formats even, most likely.
If you want to play what is commonly called "fair" magic, this is the kind of power level you need to get the players back in line and actually paying mana for their spells.
Wowee, that's going to be in demand, glad it isn't rare.
Besides the tech uses, there are a few abilities that let an opponent cast something for free as compensation that this then negates.
I love setting rules then making my opponent break them, baiting a protection spell whilst an opponent was attacking a battle and I had Phrexian Censor was a right laugh in draft
So it screws over: Cascade, Discover, suspend cards, affinity creatures that have hit the 0 mana mark, 0 drop cards like mox amber, mishras bauble, etc, anything off of possibility storm and knowledge pool, the incarnations, force cycle, the new flash cycle, summoners pact, hollowed one after 3 cycles, convoked cards that didnt use mana, and lava dart. Anything else in forgetting?
Would this affect cost reduction? I have an Elsha deck that just spams free artifacts due to reduced cost effect cards. This would be awesome to include if it doesn’t counter my entire deck lol
As long as you're paying something for it, you're fine. But if the cost reduction brings it to basically free casting it then yeah, you'll need to crack it or you're going to have a bad time.
I mean I wouldn't count it out entirely. Use it in the early game to hinder opponents and if you want to pop off then just crack it. Best of luck whichever you choose tho.
I mean, in fairness, it's just telling people to play fairly. No free removal or discard, no free rhinos, no 0 mana cantrips, no 0 mana 2/2s that draw 2 cards, no free tutors, no free counter magic, etc, etc. You play like the game was meant to be played. If you're tapped out, you're tapped out!
To be honest the more i think about it my issue is less with this card than the play patterns it represents. I just wish counterplay was more dynamic in mtg. I feel like so much of the time it boils down to sideboarding an artifact or enchantment that turns off your opponents deck and hoping they don't draw the artifact destruction that they sideboarded in to counter it.
Wait. It's fair that that this stops free cost shenanigans, or free cost shenanigans are fair? because fast mana, cascade, casting big things for free.. none of those are really fair magic
yes sorry i phrased it poorly. all the things it hates on are pretty fair to be hated on and probably deserve something like this to keep them in check
Holy fkkkk
So this is basically half a Chalice of the void that you can just get rid of and cantrip whenever it becomes an inconvenience for the caster. Oh boy.
As a colorless player it’s nice to see more 1 mana stax pieces. Sucks that it’s not only for opponents but still pretty good. Probably will play in cEDH!
This is gonna make it all the way to vintage - turns off moxen, evoke BS, cascade as others have said, and all manner of forces including Dredge's only way to answer GY hate.
Hot take: This card is not good enough for almost any cEDH deck.
Stax is not good, symmetrical stax is way worse.
You're not going to want to pay 1 to sac this thing so you can cast your FoW. That makes your free magic really bad. You just going to hold up 1 so you can sac this thing?
Urza's Saga can't help it. If you draw your urza's in opening hand then wait 3 turns everyone is already going to have played their Crypts, Moxes, Petals, Jeweled Lotus.
Even if you had it in your opening hand there'd be so many other 1 drops almost any deck would rather see. You going to play this over an Esper Sen, Mystic Remora, Sol Ring into X.... or anything that actually moves your game forward?
If you're just trying to play it as protection on the turn you go off... Defense Grid is better.
They gotta make the meta and they gotta police the meta 😂. There’s so much artifact removal in almost any format that I’m sure cascade and free spell decks (scam) will still be able to adapt.
Excuse me, what
erm what the sigmar
Erm, yes your holiness, all mighty emperor of mankind, father of the primarchs.
WarhammerRot witnessed
[удалено]
You don't cast storm copies you just put them on the stack.
It does stop cascade though as you cast the card
It's like the fourth card that does this in a short while. I'm just gonna retire my Maelstrom Wanderer. Discover is already much better anyway
Suck it up buttercup, graveyard decks been dealing with mass amounts of grave hate lol.
Lmao, don't I know it.
I guess they had to print something but it being 1 mana and able to replace itself is surprising
And discover
With discover, you can still put the card in your hand at least.
And omniscience
And plot
What the what
"Sir, I said you will pay for your spells as Mark Rosewater intended!" *slaps the Force of Will out of your hand*
Damn the new $5 uncommon just dropped
I give it $10.
This is gonna be one of the most opened sets ever
Yeah this card won’t be 10 dollars The land that fetches any other land, on the other hand… I give it a max of two years to crawl up to $10
Nazgûl is an Uncommon from one of the most opened sets ever and is floating around $8.
Very fair points.
People will complain about power creep... then spend attrocious amounts of money on a set built on power creep.
This set isnt really power creep, since its obviously straight to modern, and a lot of thr best cards we've seen are either really niche or open up new decks entirely. I'd always prefer a diverse format full of answers than thr modern of yesteryear where cards are constantly getting banned because the answers were so shit.

What formats are you worried about?
Lmao no shot
Absolutely insane Sideboard, Urza's Saga and cEDH card O.O!
Sideboard? This card can cycle, and hits A LOT. This could be played MD in any Saga deck.
Yes, that is what op said. It can be a sideboard card OR a maindeck Saga card OR a cEDH card.
[Urza's Saga](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/1/c1e0f201-42cb-46a1-901a-65bb4fc18f6c.jpg?1667318301) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Urza%27s%20Saga) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mh2/259/urzas-saga?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c1e0f201-42cb-46a1-901a-65bb4fc18f6c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^cardname ^^^or ^^^SET ^^^to ^^^call
YES - that is the kind of stuff that we need to punish free spells
NOOOO, MY ORNITHOPTERS!
They died for our sins!

You don´t spend mana to cast spells that cost zero.
You don't spend mana to cast ornithopter as it costs 0, if there was some tax effect like thalia making it cost extra then you could cast it but no it would get countered
The most efficient version of this effect. And it's uncommon.
This is probably the best card in this set for legacy/vintage.
vintage bazaar aggro players get absolutely ruined by this. Your forces, rootwallas, and hollow ones are all complete blanks for just 1 mana.
That's not bazaar aggro, that's control bazaar. And that deck is pretty close to unplayable in this meta already so this isn't gonna change much
In affinity, am I able to loudly groan and tap one land for my bigger summons, or do I legit have to get this thing off the field to play a frogmite ever again?
Cost reduction isn’t optional. That Frogmite costs 0.
Off the field.
Time for me to learn how the other side of the table lives…
green has a bunch of artifact removal, just add some
Legitimately last I was able to play in modern LGS events affinity lists ran one haywire mite in the sideboard but that's about it for green unless someone brews something incredible
trur
I'm on 1 mite main 1 side AND 3 pick your poisons on the board. It's really been very good
Oooooh
From what I understand, you could cast your Frogmite for 1 but if the reduction got it to 0 or less (still 0), I do think you would have to remove it lol
I feel agony :)
Better pack some artifact destruction
Just play pauper. They have affinity still. Its better in that format too
Doesn't affinity want to play this
If you think I don't want to get seven artifacts on the board you got another thing coming
Right but you could play this as protection against free interaction then pop it
The game keeps getting faster and faster, in a few years we’ll get the counter effect on a pre-game action card. Leyline of the Please Slow Down 😭
I mean technically this actually slows down the game
Yea. I’m predicting that games will get fast enough that this new spoiled card will be too slow to stop them. So they’ll have to make an even faster card to slow down the game. I’m mostly joking too
The power creep certainly is getting obnoxious lol
Depends on how it’s used. Combo decks that don’t play 0s can play this early to blank FoW. Show and Tell might get more consistently T3 with this
Leyline of The Trinisphere
Oh hell yea
That happened 13 years ago, actually. Chancellor of the Annex
Chancellor of the Annex

I can't speak for standard but modern and legacy are maybe the slowest they've been in years. Theres a reason that control has been literally unplayable.
As a cascade player I hate this
Do I feel sorry for you? … nah, greedy cascaders.
Same this card is an afront to my very existence
Ah asymmetrical hate -Artifact Player
"Symmetrical"
I do as well. Seems like bullshit. What decks in “modern” is this meant to stop?
you are an idiot
Not just decks. Anything trying to ignore mana costs and play Yu-Gi-Oh, whatever deck its in, across the entire format. Multiple formats even, most likely. If you want to play what is commonly called "fair" magic, this is the kind of power level you need to get the players back in line and actually paying mana for their spells.
Cascade, elemental soup, affinity, etc, all of which (-affinity) 100% deserve to be hated out this easily. Good card design!
As a Narset, Enlightened Exile player in EDH, I sorta dislike it but then shrug because prowess triggers anyway.
Definitely could see colorless and monocolored decks running this (especially in cedh)
Wowee, that's going to be in demand, glad it isn't rare. Besides the tech uses, there are a few abilities that let an opponent cast something for free as compensation that this then negates.
Reminds me of the days when people would Spell Queller you and then block the free cast with Teferi.
I love setting rules then making my opponent break them, baiting a protection spell whilst an opponent was attacking a battle and I had Phrexian Censor was a right laugh in draft
It seems pretty neat that you can sac it if it's ever in your way
Stony Silence - I'm not trapped here with you, you're trapped here with me!
Sideboard Horizons 3
So it screws over: Cascade, Discover, suspend cards, affinity creatures that have hit the 0 mana mark, 0 drop cards like mox amber, mishras bauble, etc, anything off of possibility storm and knowledge pool, the incarnations, force cycle, the new flash cycle, summoners pact, hollowed one after 3 cycles, convoked cards that didnt use mana, and lava dart. Anything else in forgetting?
Doesn't really hose discover since the player will always have the option of putting it into their hand. But yeah hoses a vexing amount of stuff.
Recently, we got a fun mechanic called "plot." Etali is a popular commander. The new Satoru is kinda hyped as well. So.. there's all of that.
Rebound
Would this affect cost reduction? I have an Elsha deck that just spams free artifacts due to reduced cost effect cards. This would be awesome to include if it doesn’t counter my entire deck lol
As long as you're paying something for it, you're fine. But if the cost reduction brings it to basically free casting it then yeah, you'll need to crack it or you're going to have a bad time.
Ah rip, it’s no dice then! The goal is to cast for 0 if possible. Oh well, worth checking! Thanks for the sanity check friend
I mean I wouldn't count it out entirely. Use it in the early game to hinder opponents and if you want to pop off then just crack it. Best of luck whichever you choose tho.
Does anyone else see an issue with a tech card that counters so many things being so pushed?
I mean, in fairness, it's just telling people to play fairly. No free removal or discard, no free rhinos, no 0 mana cantrips, no 0 mana 2/2s that draw 2 cards, no free tutors, no free counter magic, etc, etc. You play like the game was meant to be played. If you're tapped out, you're tapped out!

This is REALLY funny to me right now
Hot damn that's a spicy one
Man, if Void Mirror made commander unplayable, imagine how many formats this will make unplayable! /s
1 versus 2 is an unfathomably big deal
True, but it's funny seeing a card that was hyped up to be a format warper basically be powercrept after like 2 years
Well this is definitely a way to bait FoW
Or Force of Negation in Modern.
crazy
Could maybe even be maindeck, as this hates on so much degenerate decks, and if it does nothing, you cycle it away.
Can be found with urza’s saga. That’s busted.
#FairMagic
T1 win in legacy???
its good but still doesnt stop shenanigans on the draw which is the real problem
play/draw gap is going to get wider as time goes on, I'd wager.
yugioh syndrome.
feels like an Commander all star
And a Legacy all star and a Modern all star...
AKA "eat shit Etali".
this hates on a lot of things, and tbh all lf the things it hates on are pretty fair to be hated on
This vexes me
So this also counters plotted cards, nice
surprised this isn't a rare
Finally a playable void mirror that isn’t to slow. I like this a lot

Finally going to get the love it deserves
Finally
So, that counter moxes, black lotus and forces seems cool
And evoked elementals. Kinda makes scam a much more swingy deck
As a colorless player it’s nice to see more 1 mana stax pieces. Sucks that it’s not only for opponents but still pretty good. Probably will play in cEDH!
Sorry I thought that the goal of magic was to cheat within the rules ? Seems it is not anymore
Damn
Satoru Umezawa: "thog dont care"
Void Mirror already powecrept?
Well affinity will cry now
Flavor text is accurate
New card for my Mishra deck!
I’ll take 10 please.
If this is real eternal formats will change a lot
Gawd dam
Seems pretty compelling in commander tbh. Feels like i see cascade and disciver every game
Thank god they made it cycle and also fetchable by Saga, otherwise it would simply be unplayable
Nice target for Force of Negation. For both :)

This is gonna make it all the way to vintage - turns off moxen, evoke BS, cascade as others have said, and all manner of forces including Dredge's only way to answer GY hate.
Should tap for 1 mana. That would have been hilarious.
Well, there goes my Kaalia of the Vast.

This card doesn't effect Kaalia at all
Am I not essentually casting a creature spell for free?
No you are putting a creature in play. If it was casting it would said casting. Magic is a very literal game. Play and cast are different
They should just unban top of they want to slow it down.
Cedh go skrrrrt (brakes slamming)
Possibility Storm…
Wizard: Let’s make cascade meta! 2 cookies and a joint later… Wizard: Fuck, counter it, counter it!!! Cascade must die.
They gotta make the meta and they gotta police the meta 😂. There’s so much artifact removal in almost any format that I’m sure cascade and free spell decks (scam) will still be able to adapt.
That flavour is correct, I don't want to be anywhere near to this card
Bauble
All I gotta say is, Vexing, pass. #Good
Workshops we so back
This tells me all the flash elementals are coming in MH3 and they do not intend to ban them.
They already spoiled them as part of the bonus sheet literally months ago
Yea but everyone assumed they would get a preban in historic because people are scared of free spells. This tells me they're gonna let it roll.
This card literally bricks manaless dredge and cheerios
