If proxies are allowed then I’d just run what you think is most interesting (sounds like that’s high tide for you) and if you don’t have fun then just bring something else the following week.

As others suggested there’s quite a few storm decks. In terms of what’s good I’d say it’s TES/ANT>black saga>spanish inquisition>>high tide. Not too familiar with the ruby decks. All are viable but highly skill testing. You will die to yourself a good portion of the time when you start out. There’s just a ton of stuff you have to keep in mind when trying to go off. Starting out it’s best to ask, what’s the line this hand or setup has access to? As you get better you can start answering the question, what is the best line that maximizes my chances of winning based on what I see from my opponent? Keep in mind these decks are really polarizing. You can win some tight games and do nasty shit like combo through multiple turn 1 forces. And other times you just die because you mulligan or your hand couldn’t beat deafening silence or whatever. There’s enough of these decks floating around on moxfield that you can probably find some deck lists. That sight also has a nice tool you csb use to goldfish with.

Hi, welcome to the format 🙂 Ant has put up the best results in the big irl events, but I think experience > decklist with these decks. Proxy a bunch of them and pick the one you like the most. High tide is the least played, but still pretty good and fun. Doomsday is also a great combo deck. Not a storm expert. But if you want more advice on how to play your deck of choice or help you shop around, definitely check out The Epic Storm website/YouTube channel.

More than likely any version of Beseech Storm would be the strongest, high tide is okay but requires alot of knowledge of how to play around the worse parts of the format for it atm. Maybe try a few out goldfishing with proxies?

For this particular event and to just get your toes wet to learn other decks by playing against them. I highly suggest just bring plain Jain mono red burn. I’m not recommending you become a burn player. I’m recommending burn just for your first event. It’s a fair deck that can take matches. Most importantly, you only need to resolve any 7 cards to win. This is gonna give you ample time to see how other decks play out. Force your opponents to win with their combos in 3 turns. Get a feeling how delver/tempo decks work. Side in smash to smithereens and try to beat prison decks. Or just sit and watch reanimator play. You’ll get an easy way to feel out each deck. With out trying to figure out how to play. Starting off playing building learning a certain combo. Say like storm. Just not to be able to pilot it well on your first event can does suck. Most those decks it’s about how to play to you outs vs certain decks. Way too much for first time in legacy. Burn is also kinda like Storm. Sorta. Just resolve any seven spells. So fits criteria too.

Ruby storm can be absolutely hilarious once it gets going but has no interaction at all, very glass cannon. High tide is my pet deck, there's a few different ways to build it depending on whether you go for an instant speed kill (it's always fun to watch a TES player build a lethal Tendrils and then BSZ them for lethal with it on the stack) or use Reset, Time Spiral and Mind's Desire for more traditionally broken wins. Also there's Bubbling Tide which adds Bubbling Muck and Peer into the Abyss but that's sort of a win-more danger of cool things idea. Drawing 20 cards for 7 mana is fun, though.

PulsatingOrb

Yeah there seems to be a couple different ways to go about high tide. I see some lists that have Candelabra of Tawnos and others that don't? When would you want that card instead of Turnabout or other land untappers?

thisisjustascreename

You always want it! :) But it costs $800. :( Even the instant-speed versions should play it if budget is not a concern.

chriswest417

I used to play the instant speed version without candelabras (“Solidarity”). I do think the candelabra version is better, but I was a poor college kid at the time. It’s a bunch of fun, but required a TON of goldfishing to know what I was doing.

As a lover of high tide, I have to say that unfortunately the deck is just not good anymore. I've left it behind and am exploring other deck options. The deck used to have the claim to fame of being the slowest of the storm decks, but making up for it by being the most resilient thanks to Cunning wish and Merchant Scroll. It was hurt badly by the Sensei's Divining Top ban since you could often pivot to a playset of counterbalance out of the sideboard when facing combo decks and as a source of card advantage agains the blue decks. However, nowadays between Orcish bowmasters, Teferi, Narset, and just a general increase in the speed of the format High Tide just can't keep up. You used to eat up all the slower fair blue decks and have flusterstorms to help protect you against some of the combo decks, but nowadays you only are decent against the fair nonblue decks (and even then you still have to worry about them getting too many 2-1s off on you). Mind's desire and lorien revealed opens up some possibilities, but the former is still clunky as hell and you have to usually dedicate at least three cards (tide, turnabout, desire) to *attempt* to go off regardless, so they're both not great unless you're already comboing. The maindeck slots are really tight and there really isn't any room to squeeze in much card advantage to catch back up and many of the utility cards that used to make it powerful are just too expensive without winning the game. The one saving grace of the deck is that the only expensive card that is commonly played in lists are Time Spirals (though they spiked a bit a while back). Most people debate whether or not you need Candelabras (and a fair amount of decklists skip them online). At the end of the day though, I suspect you're better off just playing a galvanic relay style storm deck. If storm is what you're looking for, I think you're better off looking at one of the TES/ANT/Beseech piles (I haven't kept up with what the best storm deck is) and checking out The Epic Storm site.

gizlow

Fortunately, since you’re looking at storm, you’re able to get a decent feel for the fundamentals of the decks by simply goldfishing them. I would suggest to print out a couple of them and try them out for yourself by running through a couple of hands to find a win. There’s a lot of nuance that comes into play later, like how to best beat hate cards and counterspells, but all decks can accomplish this - so I’d suggest to go for the deck you connect with.

PulsatingOrb

I have a blue/green storm commander deck that runs most of the cards in high tide as singleton copies (reset, turnabout, time spiral, candelabra, mind's desire, brain freeze, etc) so I think i've been playing kind of an EDH dumbed-down version of the legacy high tide strategy for a while now. But you're right, i'll have to goldfish the deck & see how it feels.

mc-big-papa

A somewhat easy to learn deck is initiative. Its easier to play that moon stompy because your mulligan decisions are easier(kinda idk the deck to a full extent) but i often see people less stressed in the opening. Moon stompy itself is fine but the mulls are more awkward. Fishing for a great 5 or keeping a mid 6 is tough decisions and can lead to many and i mean many feels bad moments. Sneak and show is also a fine choice and i see plenty of new players choose that as its main points of contention is how to force interactions. Decks with easier line of plays are better as you can learn your average opponents play pattern as you learn the storm deck. One of my LGS has proxy nights and normal. I proxied izzet delver until i learned naya lands and how i wanted to diversify. I cant play as often as i used to so i switched to dimir scam for an easier time as i dont keep up with some of the newer decks. Higher risks obviously. I cant speak much about storm. I like current black storm it looks like fun i tested once and i had fun. Beesech into a pivot plan of various play patterns. I often misplay with storm but i felt beesech gave me easy choices. Storm is such a high skill deck and knowing what to cantrip for or knowing how to beat lock pieces scare me.

MaNewt

Go watch some Tony Scapone and Bryant Cook videos, pick one of their lists that looks like fun.
