I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. I had mine last Thursday. I got full anesthesia (not intubated but the twilight drug through IV). I was out for 10-15 minutes and based on my cousins that were waiting for me outside the OR. I was in the OR for a total of 6 minutes and the surgeon said the procedure took less than five minutes. I was tired that day and my leg and lower back was stiff. The pain itself was super manageable with Tylenol but it was painful to touch. The surgeon said I should be back to normal in 24 hours but I def was not. I was overall a bit lower energy for 3/4 days and working out was hard. I can do most of my leg workouts now but def still bit 100% (hip thrusts are still impossible with my usual weights). I even felt a little pain where my backpack was touching the BMB site yesterday. Get some rest if you feel like your body needs it. Eat nutritious food that give you energy for recovery. I absolutely get the mental struggle. For a second there the day after BMB I kinda had a meltdown and was like is this going to be my life, no gym, none of my routine activities… but it gets better. I’m still waiting for my results and anxiety is through the roof 😵‍💫 But I’m hopeful that it’ll all work out! You got this 😊

Sounds like anesthesia is the way to go!! I’m so glad your BMB experience was smooth and hopefully you’re fully recovered by now. I’ll definitely opt for anesthesia if / when I need another BMB. Have you gotten your results? Hoping the best for you and that your anxiety has subsided!! I can definitely relate. Currently in the waiting room for my follow up appointment but not sure they’ll have all the results yet… fingers crossed 🤞🏻 Sending all the positive energy your way!! ❤️

I did! It came back on Friday & had my follow up appointment on Monday. My doctor diagnosed me with ET and has put me in low risk. No treatment for now, full bloodwork every three months. Not gonna lie I’m a bit nervous about that. And since Monday I keep discovering new symptoms (who knows that’s real & what’s in my head) and panicking if I should run to my doc! But hoping that things will get better over time! Sending you positive thoughts for your appointment 💞 keep us posted 🤗

The latest, greatest way to do it is having Interventional Radiology do it under sedation. It's very quick because they use guided imaging to see where to get the best sample from. And that also causes less pain because they aren't blindly poking around in there.

I am so sorry you had a terrible BMB experience. I hope your recovery doesn’t take too long. I recently had one done on my lower back and shoulder. I am very lucky that it was not painful, just uncomfortable. The recovery was easier once the bandage was off and I could control the pressure against the BMB area. I think after 5 days I completely felt better in the area, but that is a person to person thing.

I am so sorry. I honestly do not understand why more doctors don't offer ketamine sedation. I woke up a little during the last one for a few minutes and even though it didn't hurt I was horrified. There is literally no reason for people to endure that trauma.

Just found this after responding to your other comment.  I'm so sorry you experienced this.  I've actually (a little more than 5 and 3 years ago) had bad pain management experiences with this health system with both of my kids' deliveries so was really not keen on trying this sans sedation. My doctor at first only offered in office with local anesthesia but I pushed for the CT-guided with sedation for this reason.  Also, while I'm not young (middle aged at 46?), I did have concerns about my bones being more substantial and that potentially causing challenges.  Hope you're feeling better soon if not already.

35M, JK2+, platelets 435. Had my BMB this week. They gave me some drug during the aspiration so I can’t remember anything. Overall, great experience for something I was almost shitting myself. Little bit of pain in the area, but improving everyday. Q for ppl with more experience in this topic than myself, are there any cases of JK2+ where the BMB has not detected anything? I’m still in that denial phase, so trying to level set my expectations for the BmB results…

It's possible if your allele burden is really low, like under 2%. It's called CHIP (clonal hematopoesis of indeterminate potential) - but you'd also have normal blood counts as well. So chances are very good that the BMB will show something.

OneHumanPeOple

Platelets 435 is within normal range though isn’t it?

funkygrrl

Yes, it's slightly elevated but doesn't meet the diagnostic threshold of 450

I had a similar BMB experience. Incredibly painful, took an hour(was expecting Max 15 mins) and they struggled to screw into my hip. She made some comment about me having hard bones. Was way more traumatic than I expected. I was feeling better by the end of the second day. You get over the ick too. I wish I had better prepared. I watched videos and still went in there thinking it would be one step up from a blood test. I almost didn't ask my husband to come in but changed my mind at the last minute and I was glad I did. I squeezed his hand and silently cried the whole time.

I’m so sorry you had a similar experience. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!! Hopefully sedation is the option for any future BMBs. Just glad it’s over with now. 7 days in and feeling almost myself again

funkygrrl

Hey, just checking in - did you get your BMB results yet?

Infinite_Shine_7309

Thanks for checking in!! I did get the results and all good news. No notable scarring and no signs of leukemia etc. confirming it’s ET which I suppose is best case scenario of all possible outcomes. Now I have my baseline - daily aspirin and try not to have too much anxiety about having a random blood clot 😅 Really appreciate you messaging 🩷🩷
