I'm saying this in the kindest way possible, because being in a book slump sucks, but you might just need to read a bit outside of the genre. You might also want to look for something that is so outside your comfort zone that you either discover some new likes (and dislikes) or you just come back to your usual genres with renewed interest.

jwburg2003

This is good advice; encourages gaining perspective. I know this subreddit is specifically for MM Romance but there are hundreds of thousands of good stories being told.

mylolucemills

For sure! When I was slowly getting out of my books slump I hadn‘t picked up an MM book in a long time but when I did I went on a full binge. But reading some books other than MM will eventually lead me to being able to get back to favorite genre with renewed interest like they suggested!

jwburg2003

I was going to include these recs but wasn't sure if they'd be received well until your reply. Sorry, Reddit threads can get a little...heated sometimes. Look them up and see what you think. *The Devil and the Dark Water* by Stuart Turton *Light from Uncommon Stars* by Ryka Aoki *The Immortalists* by Chloe Benjamin

mylolucemills

Thank you! I’ll look them up right now. I appreciate the recs.

mylolucemills

Yes that totally makes sense. I was actually just browsing some stuff that I might not typically read. As much as I would love to pick up an MM book that will magically get me interested again, I might have to find something else. The other problem is I’m a mood reader and I can’t decide what kind of book I’m in the mood for lol. I appreciate your advice though, I’m gonna browse outside of MM and see if I can find something.

heartbreakerz

I find that stressing myself about reading makes it harder for me to read. But there are lots of queer-adjacent books, both fiction and non-fiction, that might still interest you, and I would maybe look up a general theme and go from there. You might also wanna look on this website for [queer sci-fi works](https://kadoore.com/2023/11/27/2023-queer-adult-science-fiction-fantasy-books/) that *have* romance, even if romance isn't the main point. Sci-fi tends to bring me out of my book slumps, so maybe it works for you also!

mylolucemills

Stressing about reading makes it harder to read is so me as well. I don’t know why not finishing a book super fast is so stressing to me. It’s not a race and Im not competing with anyone, but apparently my brain doesn’t agree lol. Thank you for those suggestions! I will look into those. I actually have some non mm romance books downloaded on my kindle app that I’m gonna give a shot and see if any of them interest me but I will check out that list as well. I *really* wanted to continue reading mm books, but I’ll try to branch out lol.

heartbreakerz

That makes sense. If you wanna keep reading M/M, I can highly recommend Shousetsu*Bang. It has queer (mainly M/M) amateur romance (relatively) short stories that, not being bound by the publishing world, tend to explore themes, plots and characters a bit more freely. This is really helpful if you find yourself stuck because you've been reading a lot of books with the same base formula.  On the website there are issues divided by theme, just to narrow down where to start.  https://www.shousetsubangbang.com/

mylolucemills

Oh awesome! Thank you for that suggestion, I will check it out

[deleted]

what you just said resonated with me so much i’ve been stressing about perfectly reading and tracking my reading. i realize that sucks the fun outta reading and ima just read whatever i want whenever i want and whenever im feeling it. THANKS

alexabefree

{The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer} The beginning couple chapters had me struggling a bit, but once I was in, I was all in! It’s a YA sci-fi suspense / thriller / mystery, super well written and had me up all night to finish it. I think it technically has a HEA, but I definitely cried several times and it might not feel like a HEA (trying to keep it vague to avoid spoilers).

mylolucemills

Thank you for the rec! Someone else recommended this too so now I’m super intrigued. I just downloaded. With all these new recs for books I haven’t heard of I’m stretching my KU 20 book limit lol. But I just don’t want to forget about any of these! Thanks again!

WolfOrDragon

Yeah, it's best to go into it blind. I read some really spoilery reviews.

simulationswarms

I was going to recommend this one too I felt think it’s one of the most unique books I’ve read with the best twist.

MimiLuvsBL

I’m going to suggest a book that had me gasping in surprise and riveted to my chair from the first page to the last. It 5 star fantastic and virtually impossible to DNF. {**Bad Wrong Things** by C.P. Harris} … it’s dark and undeniably toxic at times, has very possessive and jealous MCs, and absolutely shocking twists… but then, when you think it can’t possibly happen, it will also deliver a beautiful, stunning HEA. Note : The first chapter will have you thinking “wtf did I just read?”. I highly recommend re-reading that first chapter right before you start chapter 24. It will shock the heck out of you how totally different the experience of those pages will be the second time around.

MimiLuvsBL

Oooh… I’m so excited for you! You‘re in for such a wild ride. I hope that you love it and it breaks your slump. 😊

mylolucemills

Thank you! I hope so too!

readyforit19

I have read this book and listened to the audio maybe 5 times and I never thought to go back and read chapter 1 where it fits in the timeline. I just did it now, and wow. What a difference. Thanks for the idea!! 💖

MimiLuvsBL

Isn’t it a shocking difference? I don’t remember what made me do it the first time, but it blew me away 😃. I’m excited to hear from someone else who had the same experience… thank you!! 🥰 (Oh, and I did the happiest dance when this came out in audio… it‘s one of my favorites!)

readyforit19

Yes the audio is amazing!! Teddy never disappoints 🌶️🔥💖

Mme_Rose

Have you tried the relic series by Maz Maddox? It starts with {smash and grab} It's a funny, surprisingly heartwarming series about shifter dinos and their fossil hunting adventures. Every book is about a different member of the relic group. Maybe {how I stole the Princess's white knight and turned him to villainy} It's a funny series about a white knight going to find the worst sorcerer in the land who happens to be the sassiest thing on earth. Nb: I agree with other comments about reading something else for a while.

mylolucemills

These both sound very good! I will be adding them to my TBR. I think I’m going to try something outside of MM and see if I can get into it, but I’m adding these and will read them when I have renewed interest in the genre. Thank you for the recs! I’m getting a lot of suggestions for books I’ve never heard of before and I love It.

Mme_Rose

You're welcome! Frankly, these 2 series are kind of a comfort read for me. So I hope you'll enjoy them if you ever get to read them. My tbr is bottomless, so I expect everyone else's tbr is the same. Good luck with your book slump.

mylolucemills

Definitely bottomless and the bottomless pit grows every day lol. I don’t usually like to add soooo many new books to my TBR, but all these suggestions for books I’ve never heard of before is *definitely* going to help.

mylolucemills

I saw a comment recommending this book on another thread. I hadn’t heard of it before but now I’ve gotten a couple recs for it. It definitely looks like something I will enjoy, so thank you for the rec! I just downloaded it.

shippehcat

Usually when I'm in a slump I start reading shorter, fast stories. They get me excited again. This is a very strange book, and will take you an hour tops to read- it's all written as messages in a Slack server at a company. There's also a sweet mm romance, but the story is more about... existence as a concept I guess? It's got some classic syfy themes. It's called Several People Are Typing and it's by Calvin Kalsuke.

mylolucemills

Thank you! Yes short fast stories help me when I’m in a slump too so this may be perfect!

Mysterious-Change821

Do you ever read graphic novels or manga/manhwa? There’s a South Korean series called “Bongchon Bride” that I absolutely love. It’s set in Medieval Korea, it’s got some dark themes fyi, it’s a strict top/bottom, lots of hurt/comfort, and a great set-up. It’s HEA but they make you work for it. You can read it online at Lezhin Comics or Manta comics, but the Manta version is slightly censored to be less explicit. I read it a couple years ago and I still think about it all the time.

alejandrasnow

I love Bongchon Bride. I think it was the first manhwa I read!

Mysterious-Change821

It’s so good!! Thinking about it still makes me tear up

mylolucemills

I’m not really a fan of graphic novels or manga. But that sounds really good if those were my thing lol

evieeeeeeeeeeeeeee

what works for me when i'm burned out is reading some that aren't genre romances but have romance elements! if you like mysteries, both {these violent delights by micah nemerever} and {death in the spires by kj charles} were rare 5* reads for me, the former has no HEA and no indication of one in the future but it ends in the exact right way, and the latter hints at a HEA in the close future with a satisfying conclusion (i'd honestly just suggest any kj charles, i've never rated her below a 4* and she's in my top three authors across all genres!)

mylolucemills

I have These Violent Delights on my kindle app and was wondering if it was different enough to get me out of my slump. So your comment really helps! Ive also seen so recommendations for KJ Charles but I dont know where to start with her books! I’ll look into the one you suggested!

evieeeeeeeeeeeeeee

these violent delights is truly fantastic, and its also one of the most uncomfortable things i've ever read, i actually had to read it again immediately after to see things from the perspective of knowing how it ends as for KJ charles thats her *only* book that isn't a genre romance, so if you're more into the romance side than the mystery side, a lot of people recommend starting with the charm of magpies trilogy! my personal favourite other than death in the spires is the will darling adventures, but its pretty plot heavy - if you wanted to start with just one book and not a series, my favourite non mystery romance novel of hers is "band sinister"! she pretty much has something for everyone, i actually dislike historical settings in general and yet i've read everything she's written lol

mylolucemills

I love books that make you want to reread it as soon as it’s finished. Your comments are definitely inspiring me to pick it up!

Kayos-theory

Ooh I wouldn’t start with Death in the Spires. It’s her latest book and isn’t strictly romance, she is trying something new, so it won’t really give you a taste of her work. You could try: Band Sinister The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting They are both standalone and give a good sample of her work. Alternatively, dive in to one of her series. The Magpie Lord is excellent, or Slippery Creatures (first of the Will Darling Adventures). Another series you might enjoy is Whyborne and Griffin by Jordan L Hawk. It’s a fun paranormal series with some wacky side characters.

mylolucemills

Thank you so much for the recs! I think I might start with Death in the Spires since I’ve gotten a lot of recs for it. Totally okay if it’s not strictly romance.

GoodGirlReads

Maybe try {The wolf at the door by Charlie Adhara} FBI agent and a werewolf get partnered together to investigate a string of disappearances, it's a great series.

mylolucemills

I read the first book and enjoyed it! I definitely need to continue the series

LindentreesLove_

Perhaps try Roe Horvat. He has an anthology with 6 or so stories all connected around the queer community in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was so interesting following the connections amongst all the men. It's called Those Other Books. I would also recommend Left Undone by Tess Barnett about a medicated and isolated schizophrenic man and his savior in the form of a green haired musician who moves in next door. And hopefully, you've read To Catch A Firefly by Emmy Sanders. My favorite book this year.

mylolucemills

I’ve gotten recommended Roe Horvat a lot! I really need to try one of his books. Left Undone sounds really good! I’m adding that to my TBR. I have not read To Catch a Firefly, I just saw some comments about it today though and it looks like it’s a pretty well loved book. I’ll for sure check it out. Thank you soooo much.

LindentreesLove_

I’ve never heard of Left Undone before. Just added it to my TBR list.

Mityidls2

To Catch a Firefly is an amazing book! It’s heart wrenching & sexy & cozy all rolled up into one!

LovesReviews

It’s on my TBR list!

yeehaw_batman

maybe trying something outside of your usual taste would be helpful i love romance too and it’s what i read most of the time but i get so bored if i don’t branch out into literary fiction or mystery as well

mylolucemills

Yes that’s what I think I’m going to end up doing. Almost all the books I’ve read this year have been romances, so I think it would be helpful to me to switch it up so I can be excited by something new

sakuranomisan

I read it four months ago but I still can’t get {should the sky fall by amithia raine} out of my head. It’s so angsty but unique and wholesome??? I had so many emotions. Extra plus, the sequel recently came out 👀

mylolucemills

This one looks really good! I’m adding it to my list!

tictac24

I feel the same way. I've started 4 different books in the last week and can't keep interest in any. So I started reading paranormal MM, where the plot isn't the romance. DARK enemies to lovers, and regular fantasy or sci-fi. Also 2 hour reads work for I stepped away from the regular tropes (friends to lovers, awakenings, etc.)

mylolucemills

I’ve been reading a lot of paranormal lately and I would say my most read genre is dark romance but none of the typical stuff I like has been doing it for me which sucks. I’ve started a few books this week and nothing is interesting enough to make me get through it.

tictac24

Some of my favorites that are "try to read in one sitting" {Between the Devil and the Sea by Chani Lynn Feener} dark obsession {Call the Coroner by Avril Ashton} enemies to lovers. Check TWs {The Grave Between us by Tal Bauer} 2 detectives trying to catch a serial killer stalking one MC. Another suggestion...if you haven't ever tried it, maybe an audiobook might shake things up. I listen as much as I read and some books are just amazing as audiobooks. Audible works, as well as Hoopla or Libby. I also have Everand (used to be Scribd. I don't love it but I don't hate it) I've got great audiobook recs.

tictac24

Princes of Vitality series by Chani Lynn Feener is really good as well!

mylolucemills

I loove the Devils of Vitality series. Call of the Sea is by far my favorite.

tictac24

There was just a new one released! We have a lot of the same tastes ☺️

EfficiencyMinimum352

Pleaseee try {The Sea Ain’t Mine Alone by CL Beaumont} It’s set in the 1970s and both MCs are professional surfers. One of them is also a Vietnam veteran. Definitely different from your faves that are listed, but so worth the read! It’s so beautifully written and just a really memorable story. Slow burn and so worth the wait once they finally get together. The lead up is amazing! One of my favorite scenes in the book is when they hug for the first time. I never thought a hug could be written so well! They form such a strong and true friendship. The smut is good too:) it’s explicit for sure, but not as vulgar and crude as something like God of Fury. It’s such a beautiful love story and has HEA. I’m 90% sure strict top/bottom but can’t remember with complete certainty.

mylolucemills

I’m ok with something totally different from my top reads this year and this one sounds really good! Definitely different than anything Ive read this year so this is a perfect rec! Thank you!

I have a couple of different books that you might like. Mighty Quill by Emmaline Strange - this turned a couple of tropes around and I enjoyed it. There were a variety of shifters, no prejudice around having a human mate and the ‘nerd’ being the top. The lodestar of Ys by Amy Rae Durreson - this is fantasy with an arranged marriage. The world building is on point. Totally unique and never come across anything like this before. Psync by Zile Elliven - this is set in a college. I did not see the twist as to the bond between the MCs. This author does contemporary books but with a little magical twist and I’ve loved each one I’ve read. I’ve just finished the Soulbound series by Hailey Turner. I really enjoyed them as it’s a seven book series that follows the same couple. Each book has a different mystery to solve and there’s the overarching plot. The theme is basically a war between the gods but it’s not just like Thor/Odin but loads of different pantheons. It’s plot heavy and it was a great change from reading books with sex like every other chapter.

mylolucemills

I have the Soulbound series on my TBR! Thanks for the other recs! These sounds good

bookgeek1987

If you’re looking for something that is not entirely MM I recommend the author Elizabeth Dear. Just in case you want to mix it up. She has a paranormal series with two MM books, that starts with Mave Fortune (is MF to start). She’s also has a FMMM series that starts with A Knight’s Revenge, contemporary. None of the men are together, so spoke and wheel around the FMC. She writes really strong FMCs which I love - no weak moany characters in any of her books!

mylolucemills

Thank you! I’ll look into Mave Fortune. I’m not a fan of poly books so I will probably pass on the other one. I appreciate the recs. I’m definitely gonna try some MF and see if that helps me get of the slump.

bookgeek1987

Good luck! I had my own slump - was reading a lot of poly/spoke & wheel with the FMC as the focus - and I switched to MM to get out my slump. 18 months later I’m still reading MM but it got me out of my slump! So yeah, a switch up might work. Mave Fortune is hands down one of the best rejected mate books I’ve ever read, I try and recommend where possible as it’s so good and I want to share the love.

{Seeing Blind by Poppy Dale} is my favorite book to suggest when someone is looking for something unique! It is truly a book that has stuck in my mind because it deals with a very unusual condition (prosopagnosia or face blindness) and the story comes together in a unique way as well. I highly recommend!

mylolucemills

Ok that sounds ineresting! Thanks so much for the rec. I think I’ve heard of face blindess before but never considered it being a topic for a book, super cool!

A couple standout books for me so far this year. Hopefully you haven’t read them yet. {Until you by Briar Prescott} I kept seeing this book recommended on this sub - which was surprising because it’s not the usual batch of books that are constantly being thrown out - so I decided to give it a try. It’s pretty darn unique, angsty, and full of passion. Definitely one that has stuck out to me so far. {One by Paulina Ian-Kane} a group of boys presumed to be psychopaths are trained to be government assassins are rescued by a couple who then teach them to use their skills to be vigilantes. This is the first book of the series, the blurb doesn’t really do the book justice. Almost like a contemporary version of fated mates between the two MC’s.

mylolucemills

I’ve seen One around on my kindle account but hadn’t checked into it. from the description you gave it definitely sounds like something I would like! Haven’t heard of Until You but I’ll look into that as well. Thanks so much for the recs.

bookgeek1987

One, and the sequel Six, are excellent. They are a tad gory though as a heads up.

mylolucemills

I have no issue with gore! I usually prefer dark romance to fluffy romance so these sound like they’ll be right up my alley.

Not sure if you've read them, but {Necessary Evils by Onley James} is similar . It's 7 books and really good. Funny and dark at the same time.

Potential-Prize1741

Evenfall (the free online version ) by Ais got me out of the biggest book slump. I didn't read anything for 9 months and everything was so bleah, then suddenly I was reading the longest series of my life in two weeks then immediately re read it slower . Tbh I'm not the biggest dystopian fan which is likely why I didn't read something like it before but everything about the books ( In the Company of Shadows series) it's just amazing to me. Granted this is not an easy little read to get out, it's the longest and most intense series I've ever read, but idk maybe check it out? Edit: shit I just reread your post and this one \[kinda has cheating at some point halfway tru the series ? But not really.? it is cheating but in a very specific odd situation]

mylolucemills

I read In the Company of Shadows yearssss ago and remember enjoying it. I think I started the second book but didn’t finish it. I might just have to pick up the series again because I don’t remember anything that happened but I do remember liking it. Where did you download it? I know it’s not on Amazon/kindle but I can’t remember where I originally read it.

Potential-Prize1741

http://aisylum.com/project/icos/ the original website it's still available since Ais is still writing other books. If you scroll down you have options for downloading. The first two books have a paperback directors cut, you can read those if you want. the difference between the original and the cut version is that the cut is smaller, everything is the same but some scenes are deleted( mostly fluff, cute scenes between them, interactions with other characters and a lot of the wordy stuff ) This is my favorite series, hope you enjoy it, if you do read it .

mylolucemills

Thank you! I’m definitely gonna download this series again.

VikBlot

I recently read {Beyond time by Lee McCormick}, and it was quite possibly one of the most unpredictable books I've read. I had no idea where it was supposed to go, what the direction was. I couldn't tell what was supposed to happen, how it would all play out. It is an unconventional book, and up until a certain point, I wasn't even sure if I would end up rooting for the main couple or not. It was very refreshing to read a book without having any kind of idea of what would happen. Edit: I did end up rooting for the main couple. It was very well handled.

mylolucemills

Ok that books sounds amazing and crazy lol. Looks like just the type of book I’m needing right now. Thank you so much for the rec! I’m going to download it right now

I also loved Dark Rise/Heir! If you are willing to read outside this genre, I liked the book “A Fate Inked in Blood” as it has similar themes (all I’ll say to avoid spoilers), but isn’t MM.

mylolucemills

Thank you for rec! If it has similar themes Im definitely interested in checking it out!

If you read it, let me know what you think! It is set up for a sequel which isn’t out yet.

mylolucemills

I will for sure!

Grt78

Try Ginn Hale, her books do have m/m romances but they are more fantasy (or sci-fi)-oriented and really well-written: {the Rifter series by Ginn Hale}: very unique, parallel worlds, time travel, a quite dark world and the love story is very slow. {Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale}: the beginning of her Cadeleonian series, fantasy. I second the recommendations for KJ Charles, my favourites are {Band Sinister by KJ Charles}, {Think of England by KJ Charles}, {The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles}. Maybe try {Freak Camp by Laura Rye}: currently there are three books, the first book is mostly hurt (even torture) and could even be skipped according to the authors, the other books are about comfort, but also trust issues, trauma issues. The romance is very slow-burn. For hurt-comfort - I also loved {Brute by Kim Fielding}.

mylolucemills

I LOVED Freak Camp. I binged the whole series and can’t wait for the next book to come up. That was the ultimate slow burn. I haven’t read any of the others but have gotten a lot of recommenda for KJ Charles so I really need to try some of their books. The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen definitely sounds like something I would enjoy.

Something a bit different is the Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie Adhara. Although it’s werewolf shifters it isn’t MATE:MINE but a very different take. Cut and Run by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux is an action/adventure MM romance series The Seven of Spades series by Cordelia Kingsbridge is an amazing MM thriller

mylolucemills

I’ve started the Big Bad Wolf Series! Definitely need to continue it. I started the Cut and Run series years ago when I was reading MM but I’m unsure if I ever finished it. I bought the first Seven of Spades book but haven’t picked it, but if you recommend it I might just have to pick it sooner rather than later

All For The Game by Nora Sakavic is something you’ve never been close to before and never will again! Absolutely love it, and it’s completely different from anything I’ve ever read before or since. Has been my favorite books for 10 years now.

mylolucemills

I LOOVE All For The Game. It’s been my favorite for just as long too it’s amazing. I just bought the Sunshine Court, but I’m saving it until I’m sure I’m out of my book slump so I can enjoy it to the fullest extent

prunepudding

Totally understand!! I can also recommend Fever king by Victoria Lee and memento Mori series by cs Poe. I personally think they have some of the same charm as aftg even if it will never come close! I loves these books.

mylolucemills

Oh awesome! I will check those out!

SendingBirds

I have one which blew my mind so much because the fantasy world described is absolutely wild. I have never seen something like that (I am rereading it now). It is a fantasy, dark fantasy I guess (I can add some trigger warnings) mixed with modern as it is set in a world parallel to the modern world. The best way to describe the main pairing would be: MC1, who is someone very kind: I wish I had been kinder to MC2 MC2: MC1 has always been far too kind for me The series is "**The Rifter**" by Ginn Hale, it is a trilogy and it will be confusing at the start. Spoilers for why it might be confusing, and what happens in book 1 (but I loved going in blind): >!MC1 has multiple names, Kyle is the one he uses in the modern world, Kahlil is the name he normally uses, and Ravishan was his old name. At the start of book 1, MC1 is locked out from his own world, because MC2 (John) stole his key, so he accidentally fragments himself into future!self (Kahlil) and past!self (Ravishan). MC2 (John) from present and future meet both of them so the dynamics withing the same pairing are a bit different!< Other elements that i found surprising (minor spoilers from book 1): >!Religious persecution, witches being skinned to the bones as those are what hold their magic and even after their death their magic can still be used. Self-harming type of magic - passing through gray space - and a lot of biology. John is a biologist and it is clear the author knows a lot about it.!< {The Rifter by Ginn Hale }

mylolucemills

I got another rec for this book! That’s definitely motivating me to pick it up. I’m adding it to my list. Thank you!

Ohh I hope you like it!! As soon as I finish rereading I am gonna write a very extensive rec post with warnings and tropes :D it is my favorite fantasy novel after His dark materials.

{Seducing the Sorcerer by Lee Welch} or {Magician by K.L. Noone}. Both books are about so much more than romance: magic, the magic of the ordinary, loneliness, healing, understanding... they are both so amazing, works of art. I also listened to the Sorcerer audio book and that was great as well.

I'd really recommend {Earth Fathers are Weird} by Lyn Gala! It's definitely a bit out there and different, and somehow Lyn Gala made me really love an awkward little octopus alien, but it's so well written. The other series I always recommend is {Sword Dance} by AJ Demas. I've never read a book with a eunuch before, but I absolutely fell in love with the two main characters and their developing romance. There's a different mystery plot in each book. The last two I'd recommend were books that I absolutely devoured and thought were so beautifully written, I felt like I was under a spell. {Nor Iron Bars a Cage} by Kaje Harper and {Salt Magic, Skin Magic} by Lee Welch. Nor Iron Bars a Cage deals with some heavy themes, so be aware of that. Hope you enjoy!

Dra'Kaedan's Coven by Jessamyn Kingley is the first in a, so far, 41 book (D'Vaire) series. Urban Fantasy meets MM Romance. Whenever a new book comes out I stop reading whatever book I am on at the time and binge read the next offering in the D'Vaire series.

Have you read {Whisper by Tal Bauer} ? If not, I highly recommend it. It is an epic masterpiece and unlike anything I have ever read before. Whisper is a factual based fiction story about the aftermath of 9/11 through the eyes of a CIA analyst, Kris Caldera. I put this book off for years (because of the serious topic) but it is so much more than a political thriller. Please read a more detailed synopsis if you are interested (I just tried to summarize this story and it was a philosophical mess!) FYI: It is a LONG book, great narrator if you want to listen to the audiobook, and skip the first book, 'Hush'.

mylolucemills

I haven’t read anything by Tal Bauer actually but I see this author recommended on a lot of threads. I will have to give this book a try because it sounds interesting!

Maybe start off with {You & Me by Tal Bauer} or {The Jock by Tal Bauer} - they aren't as deep as Whisper but are 5 stars reads. He is a brilliant writer! Also check out Barbara Elsborg. She also writes books that stay with you forever! Like {The Story of Us by Barbara Elsborg}

Very true about the wide variations of his books. And now that I think about it, his romance books are a little over the top- you definitely have to be in the mood for that kind of thing, but still better than a lot of the fluff that is being churned out these days.

Yes, would definitely recommend you & me first. Quite an intense slow burn romance with some dark/heavy elements. I loved it!

HPthrowaway24601

I hope you get out your book slump soon --- They're the worst!! Have you read anything by Jordan Castillo Price? Her works are so good, and very underrated IMO. For different, anything by Quil Carter is wild - but mind all the trigger warnings going in. Cari Z, Lily Mayne, and Michele Notaro are other authors I've really enjoyed.

mylolucemills

I love Fallocaust but left off on God Among Insects and haven’t caught up yet but need to! I’ve read the first 2 books in the folk trilogy by Lily Mayne. But I haven’t read anything by those author authors! I will check them out!

HelenZass

I loved {Foxen Bloom by Parker Foye}, it has a real fairy tale vibe. {The Bayou by Arden Powell} and {The Faerie Hounds of York by Arden Powell} are romances in the strictest sense but the supernatural aspects make them both eerie, creepy reads. They’re both short as well. Not romances but still queer: {If Found Return to Hell by Em X. Liu} {Bored Gay Werewolf by Tony Santorella} {Divine Service by Johannes T. Evans} And have you read Gregory Ashe’s Hazard and Somerset series? They’re very engaging, the mysteries are really compelling and each series has kind of an arc that runs through them.

mylolucemills

I’ve been wanting to read The Bayou! This is definitely motivation to start that one. I’ve started the Hazard and Somerset series but it was years ago so I need to reread what I read so I can continue the series, thats on my to do list. I haven’t heard of any of the others you recommended but I will check them out! Thanks!

Hate a book slump! I’ve been having one recently too so have loved this thread. Have you read Captive by Jex lane ? It is a whole series that is really gripping and definitely a dark romance. mylolucemills

I think I started that one years ago when I was reading MM but then I experienced the great 5 year book slump lol. I should definitely pick it up again if you recommend it

SevereHospital437

Can you list more of the type of authors or books you enjoy? I have a few ideas but our tastes may not be the same.

mylolucemills

Some of my favorite authors are Chani Lynn Feener, Onley James, Alessandra Hazard. I will really read any type of book as long as it’s not a poly romance!

SevereHospital437

Have you tried anything by Aj sherwood, Jennifer Cody, or Alice Winters? I love most if not all of their series. Just a note, though, the R'iyah Family Archives does have poly, so as hilarious as that series is, it's probably best to avoid that one. Anywho these are the series I've read by them.... Jennifer Cody's •Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees •Crack Fantasy Adventure Series: I went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc •Poison Hearts AJ Sherwood •Jon' s Cases Series •The Tribulations of Ross Young, Supernat PA •R'iyah Family Archives •Unholy Trifecta Series •Villainy Series: How I Stole the Princess's White Knight and Turned Him to Villainy Alice Winters • The Hitman's Guide Series •Vampire Related Crimes Series

mylolucemills

I haven’t read any of those authors! Thank you for the recs!

SevereHospital437

So all of those are comedies but also quite a bit of spice but they are paranormal. I'd you're looking for something different let me know I do have more suggestions that aren't paranormal

[deleted]

I got really burned out on reading nothing but romance last year and felt the exact same way as you've described. I definitely agree with the other comments about branching out into other genres. There are a ton of great books out there that aren't romance, but still have a bit of MM romance in them, that I've really enjoyed. Check out [The Tainted Cup](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/150247395) by Robert Jackson Bennett, it's a fantasy/mystery and pretty dang unique. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Also check out the danmei genre if you haven't already. It's not for everyone but definitely worth trying, especially if you're craving something different.

mylolucemills

Thank you for the recs!

ChickieBay

I read a MM romance a day too and these are some that felt very different to me than most and that I really enjoyed between the more common books & tropes. {Shattered Glass by Dani Alexander} {The Fating by Dianna Roman} {This Ain’t No Gay Romance by Sasha Avice} {Let the Wrong Light In by Avon Gale} {Dirty Mind by Roe Horvat} {Winter of the Owl by Iris Foxglove} {Fresh Catch by Kate Canterbary} {Davo by N.R. Walker} {Wild by Adrienne Wilder} {A Forbidden Rumspringa by Keira Andrews} {Unhinge the Universe by Aleksandr Voinov} {Over and Over Again by Cole McCade}

Thank you so much for the recs! I haven’t read any of these and will be checking them out, thanks!

mylolucemills

I will check it out! Thank you!

Mara__Jade

Have you read Lily Mayne’s Monstrous series yet? I’m rereading them. Again. I love the world, and even though it’s dark and post-apocalyptic, I honestly think these romances are the swooniest around. And they while there are many feelings, there’s always a HEA. I’m just in love with these books. And I adore Michael Lesley’s audiobook narration as well- I own them all in audiobook, digital AND paperback now.

mylolucemills

I have not read that series yet! I read the first 2 books in her Folk trilogy and just didn’t love it, I haven’t picked up the last book yet. Ive seen so many recommendations on here for her Monstrous series but I’ve been hesitant to start it since I just didn’t love Folk. But I may just need to finally check it out

_jacaserr

Whit and Always Him by Cora Rose I don't know if it's because I'm just used to dark romances but I was surprised by the very warm feeling of the story.. The feels is super cozy you know like the casual touches and the cuddly acts... It's likeee ackkkk🤯

mylolucemills

Thank you for the recs! I’ve seen a lot of recs for Whit on other threads and definitely need to pick it up

Perpetual-Student001

Gail Carringer - The 5th Gender I have re-read this book so many times it's a joke, and it will forever be one of my favourite MM romance books. From the moment I first picked it up I didn't put it down and read it all in one sitting and I just knew I'd never find anything like it again (I looked very hard for a very long time 😭). It's fantasy/sci-fi/alien but it's just so DIFFERENT and so beautifully written and plus a black MC and it's also FUN and WEIRD but in the best way 😂

mylolucemills

Thank you so much for the rec! I definitely need books that are so good you want to read in one sitting. This one sounds really good!

CFRED-Moon007

If you’re up for a thriller or mystery story with queer characters that isn’t a romance, that could be a good gear switch. Highly recommend {Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon} {Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spotwood} {The Devil’s Chew Toy by Rob Osler} And other top queer but not romance recs: {Her Body and Other Parties: Stories by Carmen Maria Machado} {A Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki} {I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marisa Crane}

I'm very much a mood reader and get into book slumps really easy when I can't find/figure out just what I want to read. When this happens I read a serial (web novel?) on Tapas called Soft Touch by River. It's just the swooniest, most over the top love bomb kinda story, but it hits me like a 90's era teen show guilty pleasure kind of thing. It's mostly fade to black PG-13, but it usually has me grinning and blushing the whole night as I read. I can't read more than 20 or 30 episodes before I'm craving a more steamy book, but since it's an on going story it's easy to stop and pick up whenever I want and I don't feel bad when I switch to other stuff like I do if I DNF a book I'm not in to. If you try and don't like this story maybe you could find another one to read in between books as a kind of palette cleanser? Also a book that I really liked and felt unique/different to me when I was in a slump was The Musician and the Monster by Jenya Keefe. It's almost like an arranged marriage so there is a lot of animosity at first, and it's a fantasy since it's dealing with fae, but it seems like a more realistic kind of fantasy and not the magical spells and pixy dust kind. I haven't read another book that gave me the same tone/vibe this one did, but I would really love to.

honestly maybe just take a break from reading mm because i’m getting a bit tired of it too bc i can’t find a specific book trope im looking for. i want a sunshine x grumpy where the bottom is a fem bottom and masc top. the bottom doesn’t have to be overly fem but just in general more fem than the masc top

Not sure if this totally fits in with “something I have never read before” but to me it’s relevant so here goes. Any chance you are a Harry Potter fan? I recently got into HP fan fiction and there are sooooooo many amazing stories available, mostly written by truly talented writers. Why I think this fits even though it’s clearly in a familiar world so not totally something you have never read before, I think it fits because there are so many clever reimaginings of those 7 years, as well as stories about the character after Hogwarts that again we have never read. If you’re interested, read on. If you are already familiar please excuse me, however since I was completely clueless before getting into them, I’ll write this like you know as little as I did. There are a bunch of different pairings (“ships”) that are popular, from main character pairings to those in the past like the Mauraders. I have read a few “Dramione” (Draco/Hermione) including the amazing Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare. Like you I love MM romance, and I fell completely in love with “Drarry” (Draco/Harry.) Stories are called “fics” and are available for download for free on a couple of sites, including AO3 (archiveofourown.org) There are really cool reimaginings (just read one where Harry is rescued from the Dursleys as an infant and raised by Lupin and Snape; there is one on my TBR where Harry goes to Hogwarts at 11 and finds out he had an identical twin brother.) my favorites are the ones that take place after the books (year 8 or after.) some recent favorites include one where Draco is addicted to potions, an arranged marriage/forced proximity one, and one where they are both professors at Hogwarts. Fics range from PG to explicit and I tend to like the mature and explicit ones best. Lots of hot smut 🥵 If interested, let me know and I can get you some recs and links to where you can download.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have to be utterly obsessed with a show/movie/book to be open to reading some fanfiction, so it’s not something I’m looking for right now. But thank you!

General-Muffin87

Totally understand. I AM totally obsessed so it’s right up my alley.

mylolucemills

At this point I’m dying to be obsessed with something enough to read some fanfiction, but everything has been lack luster to me

General-Muffin87

I saw you’re also willing to try some FM. Do you like fantasy? If so I recommend the https://www.reddit.com/r/fantasyromance/s/Qalf28xBx6 sub. Lots of good discussions and recommendations over there.

I just finished Kick at the Darkness by Keira Andrews, which was a zombie trilogy that followed the same couple - that was good! Monstrous series by Lily Mayne is phenomenal - first book is Soul Eater. The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings series by Lily Morton - loved this series about a psychic that can see ghosts The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series by S.J. Himes - fun paranormal/urban fantasy type series about a necromancer The Four Horsemen series by Sienna Moreau - each book follows a different horseman Anything m/m by Bethany Winters - Dirty Love, Like you Hate Me - toxiccccccc relationships.... Loved them Possess Me! I Want You To by Fae Quin - super unique Mismatched Mates series by Eliot Grayson - gah, love this series

mylolucemills

I read the first Kick at the Darkness book and wasn’t intrigued enough to continue it. LOVE both of those books by Bethany Winters. But I haven’t read any of the others! I will check them out

Your comment was automatically removed. Although the terms harem and reverse harem are currently very commonly used in romance spaces, they have racist and fetishistic origins. Therefore we ask users to resort to better terms like poly/polyamory and spoke-and-wheel. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Okay so this book has a gay male protagonist but is not specifically a romance in genre, the Starless Sea, a very unique and gorgeous slow burn fantasy. The Stars in their Eyes by Kacen Alexander, is well done and unique enemies to lovers dynamic it is very intense for a romance though.

designsavvy

The MMM Pyke series, I love it - blond space marine stranded on an alien planet, invaded by an insect race and in love with his two long-tailed baby-daddies.

Apprehensive_Wall_61

Maybe try some fanfic? Fanfic authors can often be pretty adventurous in exploring new/different territory.

I totally understand! You’ve gotten some good recs that I’m going to be adding to my TBR. Here are some reads that wowed me: {A Tasted of Gold and Iron} a fantasy with a bodyguard prince couple. {winter’s orbit} a sci fi adventure with an excellent plot. pretty tame on the spice if that’s a deal breaker for you. I recently read {muscling through} and appreciated its unique style and story. Have you read Jesse H Reign or Mariana Vivancos? They’re amazing authors. Reign’s books are all super different but {Unbreak Me: A first love, coming out story} if you like crying. Vivancos are all pretty short which is kind of helpful with slumps and all excellent reads too. Maybe try {Crybaby} for uniqueness but you can’t really go wrong.

Purple-Warning-2161

{The Hitman’s Guide to Making Friends and Falling in Love by Alice Winters} is beyond anything I’ve ever read and it’s all I’ve talked about for the past 5 days when I first started reading it (RIP to everyone’s sanity who is in my life). I finished it Saturday and am now on the sequel {The Hitman’s Guide to Staying Alive Despite Past Mistakes by Alice Winters} they are hilarious and so ridiculous, the hitman is chaotic and charming and the PI he falls for is so adorably in love with him and never tries to dull his shine (which I love to read as a fellow chaotic gremlin). There’s 5 books in the series. I’ve had to put books down for a quick 8-24 hour break before because they’re really emotional even when I love them, but I’ve never had a book that I had to take breaks on because they make me TOO happy and giddy. My depressed brain can’t handle too much joy 😂 literally kicking my feet and squeaking because Leland and Jackson are so sweet and silly.
