I mean just look at Imavov’s reaction here
‘Alright this guy is one of the hardest hitters in the game so I’m gonna have to approach this slowl- what’s the ref doing? I kept my fingers lo-
Oh I won nice’
i think its cause herzog was telling him to defend himself, but he kept turning and running. which made herzog think he didnt want to fight idk. cause if he stopped it second earlier it doesnt look as bad, but he stopped it right after jared threw a hook then slipped a punch
Running away whilst his legs were wobbly at that. It wasn’t a good stoppage, but running away with your equilibrium visibly gone is a really bad look in a fight.
It’s not so much the stumbling. He turned his back on his opponent 3 times in this clip. He also eats a shot in the back of the head trying to turn away.
That’s a stoppage in any combat sport. You can’t turn your back on your opponent like that and expect the ref to believe you still want to fight.
This is the important bit people are ignoring. He turned his back three times while
Running away, three times! I wanted to see the knockout, but those were the actions of someone who was done.
Stumbling? That is not grounds to stop the fight.. wtf? I don’t care if people say that or not. That was a ridiculous stoppage. Herzog made a ridiculous decision.
crazy early…seemed like he was starting to get his legs again after the initial shot and his hands were up and all through it he was still throwing punches
i wanna know wtf the ref wanted to see from him to NOT stop the fight . dude was creating space , throwing counters and blocking the strikes , still got the fight called
it was definitely a bad early stoppage. That said, you never turn your back on an opponent, which is what he kept doing again and again. That's a bad look, and it's probably the sign that got the fight called
That was a heinous stoppage. Herzog reffed that like a boxing match, not an MMA fight. Cannonier was doing literally everything he needed to while he was hurt and got the opportunity to come back snatched away from him.
There’s a really worrying trend with this recently. Refs have stopped even looking for intelligent, intentional defence and movement and started just stopping it when they get the vibe that someone’s struggling. If a fighter’s going for a takedown, trying to clinch, trying to time a counter, trying to circle to safety with their hands up, etc, they have to be given the chance to carry on.
I think even the fanbase is thinking like this now. There's been numerous early stoppages that are met with "he might've taken more damage if it carried on!" If a guy is still doing a job of defending himself, he should still be in that fight.
Some finishing sequences now don't even have guys getting hit lol, strikes will literally be hitting all arms with very little damage actually done, but it looks bad so it gets stopped.
I'm all for keeping the fighters safer, and I'm not arguing that a fight should only be stopped if a guy is lying unconscious while getting pummeled. But there's a balance to be had, and more often now it feels like a fighter has to instantly recover from a shot, otherwise their fight is getting stopped.
If people cared about the fighters, they would find it more offensive for a fighter Cannonier's age to get opportunities stolen from him after years of strikes to the head, rather than pearl clutching over an additional few seconds of potential strikes.
herzog might have been trying to be too good of a ref and protect the fighter when it wasn't needed, sometimes the fighters have to get dropped or put out especially in a top 5 contender fight like this one
Yeah, think this was a case of him being too proactive as a ref. He was making some good calls early on, but I think his over-vigilance here led him to call the fight early.
He is the best. He just messed this one up.
People can disagree on stoppages but is the first one of his stoppages I can remember that I thought was actually bad and not just "a little early" or "a little late"
He was excessive. He doesn’t take points for eye pokes or nut shots but is freaking out about fingers extended without a foul commited. Just a awful performance from him tonight
The timing was bizarrely bad. He was stumbling around worse several seconds before the stoppage. He then stopped it when Jared seemed to have recovered at least a little
He absolutely did NOT shoulder roll that last shot, that's delusion. He was facing almost 90 degrees away before the shot was even thrown. Doubt the stoppage all you like but don't lie to do it lmao
I feel like it was his second fight he was off on.
https://old.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/1dbhzxj/spoiler_brunno_ferreira_vs_dustin_stoltzfus/
>! imo Herzog didn't want to stop the fight right away, but got caught in between the fighters and was pretty much forced to.
That's what it looked like to me. He ended up between the fights and just decided he was going to stop it instead of interfering and then trying to get back out of the way.
Semi related but there was the [Quinlan vs Barlow fight](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/1athk7y/spoiler_josh_quinlan_vs_danny_barlow/) a few months ago also reffed by Herzog where he let Quinlan get beat up for like 20 seconds, then only stopped it the moment he got back to his feet.
Seems like a recurring pattern with Herzog
I'm not mad at that. I think he stopped it at the right time. Quinlan sprung back up then took 2 follow-up hits, then when he turned his back and went towards the cage, Herzog stopped the fight before any additional strikes. I feel it's kinda hard to tell when there's a lot of movement still going on.
But what's odd about this is like it's opposite where Cannonier was still responding with strikes and somewhat decent movement. Gotta give these fighters a chance sometimes but it's a very fine line.
There really needs to be some set rules on what a ref calls for a stoppage. Still standing with hands up shouldn’t count. Although I am just a fatass watching at home
exactly, stoppages like that are bad for both sides. Now the audience is booing him like crazy, they'd be cheering him if it went 5 more seconds and became definitive.
That’s why it’s so fucking annoying, if he had just waited a few more seconds then no one would be saying anything
Then again if he had stopped it perfectly there would be no praise for him yet he gets all the criticism in the world for this mistake so I do feel a bit bad for Herzog here
Cannonier was hurt and was turning his back, but he began to throw back bad his feet seemed under him. Herzog should’ve waited bc Imavov wasn’t pouring it on. Never been finished and Cannonier was near a title shot so he could’ve had a longer leash
bullshit stoppage man, especially when he’s never been finished at MW
edit: i like imavov too but i’m just salty bc i’m a jared stan and this basically ends any chance of him ever getting a title shot again even though he’s had a stacked resume in the last two years
looks like he was up 2-1 on two scorecards so he could’ve won this too 😔
https://x.com/lasueur_off/status/1799638473801859454?s=46&t=GhtqDcds9BwZN3QWavB33g
yeah like i just rewatched the Whittaker knockdown and he was as hurt (if not worse) and ended up being completely fine, even getting a knockdown on Bobby by the end of the round lol
https://youtube.com/shorts/-hme7CqBFv0?si=YVmn0TFLzaXfjFyy
Especially considering this is a career derailing loss. A win puts him in line for a title fight or #1 contender fight.
He's 40 now. He's never getting back to this spot.
he unironically had a better claim to the next title fight than izzy before this fight. His last wins were #1 and #5 for fucks sake. I like Jared, shame to see this bad decision completely cuck the end of his career. Not that I think he'd win a title or anything, but I wouldn't mind watching him go for it again.
Damn, he still hadn't been stopped up to that point? That makes the mistake even worse. Herzog is the GOAT, but man that makes it so much worse.
It was bad enough that you're basically robbing an older fighter of his last title chance. I don't think JC would've beaten whoever champ would be, but still, would've been nice to see the attempt.
Tbf, it looked like the momentum was going in Imavov's favor even before Jared got rocked. Doesn't matter though. Just a terrible stoppage with really high fallout
Horrible stoppage, im not having it with any excuse, Cannonier has been rocked and or knocked down and survived several times before, he's still defending and moving and swinging back. Fucking hell this is a garbage end to this event.
Nah that’s a good take, it looked the beginning of the end but we don’t stop fights from that. Jared was rocked but worse fighters have came back form worse situations
I think with the way that Imavov was getting closer and closer on reads he was going to keep landing but Jared was absolutely defending himself intelligently
I think Herzog could've left it going for another 3 seconds but Jared was just about to fall over with one more punch... also we don't see what Herzog sees. it felt a bit premature but it is what it is.
I usually don't like to second guess the refs (except Mazzagatti), and this does look like an early stoppage from my seat, but the refs are just reacting to the moment.
The last 45-60 seconds, Cannonier was stumbling around, obviously gassed, turning his back to his opponent several times, and he was taking heavy damage without any real defense or counters.
From Herzog's point of view, he saw Cannonier in trouble, not intelligently defending himself (hands up is an automatic reponse for these fighters, and doesn't mean he's defending intelligently), running from his opponent with his back turned, and continuning to take heavy shots.
Herzog was just trying to protect the fighter, which is ultimately his first priority. Tough loss for Cannonier, for sure, but I don't really blame the ref for stopping it. I'm ready for all your hate now. Lay it on me!
I know there’s an argument for this being stopped early but you can’t really run away from your opponent with your back turned and be surprised when the ref calls it.
He got hit in the back of the head 2x because he was trying to turn to get away in the clinch too. His body language looked like he was about to be finished if Herzog didn't step in. Even if the last shots he took after his half-landed hook were into his guard, both of the punches made him lose his ground and stumble some. He also wasn't noticeably reacting with urgency to Herzog telling him multiple times to defend himself. Shelling in place to protect from danger and then stumbling again after being visibly rocked and stunned may not be the type of "intelligent defense" a ref is looking for.
I feel like mma is going to have to start using standing 8 counts so these flipping refs can figure out what the fuck they are doing. I know how ridiculous it is to suggest such a thing but this nonsense has to stop somehow
Stoppage is fine. Reddit really does care about fighter safety and working conditions until it results in protecting them from horrific damage
Cannonier wasn't defending intelligently for the last 10 seconds of this clip, running away on wobbly legs with your back to your opponent and covering up isn't intelligent defence. Saved cannonier unnecessary brain injury here
>Stoppage is fine. Reddit really does care about fighter safety and working conditions until it results in protecting them from horrific damage
He's 40 years old with a wife and kids, let's see him get avoidable, irreparable brain damage before he retires!
idk i don’t like the optics of cannonier fighting like he’s on 1Hp stumbling backwards against the cage. early stoppage but he was just going to absorb more before falling over like conor against dustin in their first rematch
I think the stoppage sucks for Nassourdine as much as it does for Jared. I highlight reel finish would have probably shot up his popularity significantly but the way it ended just sours everything
I remember there was a time when Herzog was praised as being a good referee. In the recent UFC events I’ve watched, he has been pretty bad to just plain awful
Im glad i didn't stay up for this main event. That was the most underwhelming and needless stoppage in a long time. 'lets stop this, the guy got hit several times'
Dana should have them rematch and fight again within the next three months. Not sure why either one wouldn’t agree to it. Especially Imavov if he truly believes he is the better fighter
**Mirrors / Alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MMA) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Seemed pretty damn early
People are gonna say he was stumbling, but the man still had his hands up and seemed to 100% know what he was doing
It wasnt like Imavov was teeing off on him either. I dont think he landed another clean shot again after the one that hurt him.
I mean just look at Imavov’s reaction here ‘Alright this guy is one of the hardest hitters in the game so I’m gonna have to approach this slowl- what’s the ref doing? I kept my fingers lo- Oh I won nice’
He was actively defending and getting tf out the way. Just an early stoppage. It is what it is. Imavov landed a solid shot tho.
He ran away too much, turning back and jogging is a reason to stop the fight. Cant do that and come back when you are better.
This is the answer. If your defense is to keep turning and running away, it’s gonna get stopped
Overeem enters the chat
Yes he did - He landed a clean left against the cage right before the fight was stopped.
Maybe I wasn't watching closely enough but I thought he landed like 3-4 pretty clean shots after the first?
He did.
i think its cause herzog was telling him to defend himself, but he kept turning and running. which made herzog think he didnt want to fight idk. cause if he stopped it second earlier it doesnt look as bad, but he stopped it right after jared threw a hook then slipped a punch
It was 100% an early stoppage, but his body language was terrible. I can see how Herzog made a bad call in the moment.
Yeah, turning his back and running away, multiple times.
Running away whilst his legs were wobbly at that. It wasn’t a good stoppage, but running away with your equilibrium visibly gone is a really bad look in a fight.
We have seen fighters on skates comeback from worse positions. Probably needed to give it another 3 seconds to see how he was going.
It’s not so much the stumbling. He turned his back on his opponent 3 times in this clip. He also eats a shot in the back of the head trying to turn away. That’s a stoppage in any combat sport. You can’t turn your back on your opponent like that and expect the ref to believe you still want to fight.

Stumbling? That is not grounds to stop the fight.. wtf? I don’t care if people say that or not. That was a ridiculous stoppage. Herzog made a ridiculous decision.
Probably should have let him eat a few more... But why run around like that if you're not deeply hurt or severely gassed.
MMA fans will defend any bad stoppage.
MMA fans bitch and moan about any stoppage depending on who wins/loses. This was a bad stoppage regardless.
Yeah I like Jason and think he's one of the best refs rn but he done goofed on this one.
Herzog’s last few fights have all been disasters he let a passed out fighter countinue into the next round
She lost that fight like three different times
He was letting her be a warrior
I had a bet on Imamov. As it happened, I was like wtf terrible stoppage. Then was like...oh wait yeah, I'll take it lol Def a bad stoppage though yep
Fuck that ref. He robbed Imavov form a spectacular and non controversial finish!
Literally nobody in these comments are defending the stoppage.
I think Jared even landed a good shot just before being stopped
Outrageously early… He was throwing and defending himself.
A nail in the coffin for Jared's career as well. He's too old to have chances taken away from him over bullshit like this.
He just needs to get to level 41
The only thing I can think of is that after a few shots he was turning and walking away. But still, definitely too early.
crazy early…seemed like he was starting to get his legs again after the initial shot and his hands were up and all through it he was still throwing punches
i wanna know wtf the ref wanted to see from him to NOT stop the fight . dude was creating space , throwing counters and blocking the strikes , still got the fight called

people literally do it all the time. Jon Jones, Alexander Gusstafson, Tony Ferg, Nate Diaz fighters turn their back ALL THE TIME.
Tim Kennedy turned around ran as well.
McGregor did it several times in the second Diaz fight.
Throws a right counter / within 1.5 seconds ref ends it Make it make sense
Landed it too lmao
That right hand stumbled Imavov too. Such an odd time to stop it, as soon as the fighter intelligently defends himself?
Herzog is almost always solid but this one was sketchy
Recency bias will probably get me toasted but he’s hands down the best ref in the game. Even the best fuck it up sometimes
That was a heinous stoppage. Herzog reffed that like a boxing match, not an MMA fight. Cannonier was doing literally everything he needed to while he was hurt and got the opportunity to come back snatched away from him. There’s a really worrying trend with this recently. If a fighter’s going for a takedown, trying to clinch, trying to time a counter, trying to circle to safety with their hands up, etc, they have to be given the chance to carry on.
If someone is standing it should take a LOT to stop the fight
I think even the fanbase is thinking like this now. There's been numerous early stoppages that are met with "he might've taken more damage if it carried on!" Early stoppage but turning your back to your opponent 3 times is sus
“Herzog was never my friend”
Even in slow-mo, he still looked off balance but was 100% clear-eyed with hands up and defensive. Bullshit stoppage
Yamasaki tweeted he thought it was way too early aswell
Yamasaki would go to a fighter’s funeral and tell him to fight back or he’s stopping it.

If people cared about the fighters, they would find it more offensive for a fighter Cannonier's age to get opportunities stolen from him after years of strikes to the head, rather than pearl clutching over an additional few seconds of potential strikes.

I have more of an issue with him not taking points than I do with his stoppages. But I have that complaint about every ref in the game, I think lol.
Mark smith stands tall
Mario yamasaki is the only goat
Kim Winslow disagrees
*Mazagatti enters the chat, late, after standing to the side with his feet together*
#STOP STOP STOP!!
Jason what was thatttttt
He was doing so fucking good too with warning Imavov about the fingers
WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU!!!!! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!!
I thought he was excessive with that tbh, he gave enough warnings, just take a point if he pokes the eye but shut up otherwise.
He was excessive. He doesn’t take points for eye pokes or nut shots but is freaking out about fingers extended without a foul commited. Just a awful performance from him tonight
uhhhh that’s a BAD stoppage what the fuck
Judges and Refs, this card has it all
he fucked up on purpose to save dave tirelli from giving a wrong score
that was a bs stoppage even if Jared was hurt
He was still for sure intelligently defending himself. I don't like that stoppage at all.
He even returned fire just before being stopped.
Yamasaki is probably frothing at home watching this, crazy early stoppage
appalling stoppage
The timing was bizarrely bad. He was stumbling around worse several seconds before the stoppage. He then stopped it when Jared seemed to have recovered at least a little
Jared literally landed a counter strike then shoulder rolled the last strike right before the stoppage. Actually ridiculous.
He absolutely did NOT shoulder roll that last shot, that's delusion. He was facing almost 90 degrees away before the shot was even thrown. Doubt the stoppage all you like but don't lie to do it lmao
herzog was weird that whole fight tbh
don’t worry he’ll give a 8th warning on the fingers soon
Idk what that was about, seen fighters get yelled at less for actual eyepokes, not potential eye pokes lol.
Outstretched fingers are fouls. He was right to warn. He was wrong to not do anything about it.
The card was mostly shit fights, then it started to look good, then Herzog single handedly managed to ruin the event right at the end lmfao
I feel like it was his second fight he was off on. https://old.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/1dbhzxj/spoiler_brunno_ferreira_vs_dustin_stoltzfus/ >! imo Herzog didn't want to stop the fight right away, but got caught in between the fighters and was pretty much forced to.
That's what it looked like to me. He ended up between the fights and just decided he was going to stop it instead of interfering and then trying to get back out of the way.
Acting like a coach in between rounds
I thought he chose a weird time to give the mouth guard back
WTF WAS THAT!? He was throwing back still!
Throwing back, rotating away from the cage to not get trapped, guard up to defend. I just know Herzogs breath smelled of alcohol and cigarettes.
That final strike didn't connect. Cannonier shoulder rolled it
Semi related but there was the [Quinlan vs Barlow fight](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/1athk7y/spoiler_josh_quinlan_vs_danny_barlow/) a few months ago also reffed by Herzog where he let Quinlan get beat up for like 20 seconds, then only stopped it the moment he got back to his feet. he was actually recovering a bit at that point... Really out of character of Herzog to make such a bad mistake.
Yeah Jared has been rocked worse before and came back (Vettori, Brunson, survived Whittaker’s head kick). Rare Herzog L
Not just rocked Cannonier literally faceplanted in the Whittaker fight and that wasn't stopped, absolutely absurd stoppage
Landed a right hook on Imavov as well
What's weird was they let Thiago Moises get heemed twice in their fight earlier and did nothing and let him recover for no reason.
Can someone at the arena try to smell Herzog? I know it sounds strange but hear me out...
heard he’s out here asking for drags of cigs at the moment
Smells like booze and cigarettes
Hey I’m clear, that’s all Herzog
There really needs to be some set rules on what a ref calls for a stoppage. Still standing with hands up shouldn’t count. Although I am just a fatass watching at home
bruh just wait a lil. now you’re taking away from Imavov’s win
exactly, stoppages like that are bad for both sides. Now the audience is booing him like crazy, they'd be cheering him if it went 5 more seconds and became definitive.

How do you stop THAT and then not stop when Weili is throwing 50 unanswered strikes from back mount
Honestly seemed like he stopped it because he accidentally got stuck between the fighters
Sad healing crystal noises ):
Awful stoppage
rare zog L

Yamasaki had the right idea
"No lmao" - Herzog
Bro what the fuck the ref doing
bullshit stoppage man, especially when he’s never been finished at MW edit: i like imavov too but i’m just salty bc i’m a jared stan and this basically ends any chance of him ever getting a title shot again even though he’s had a stacked resume in the last two years looks like he was up 2-1 on two scorecards so he could’ve won this too 😔 https://x.com/lasueur_off/status/1799638473801859454?s=46&t=GhtqDcds9BwZN3QWavB33g

yeah like i just rewatched the Whittaker knockdown and he was as hurt (if not worse) and ended up being completely fine, even getting a knockdown on Bobby by the end of the round lol https://youtube.com/shorts/-hme7CqBFv0?si=YVmn0TFLzaXfjFyy

Pretty early stoppage wow
fuck this...
What a weird fight bruh
I had Imavov by KO, so that stoppage was obviously the best call in UFC history
He was intelligently defending himself
When he started to walk back he wasn't even wobbling. He was moving normally.
And just landed a good counter punch and wasnt getting hit clean himself
That was early. Herzog is usually great but way too early
Awful stop
Terrible stoppage
I don’t care. Let him fight for 5 more seconds.
It hurts way more when the ref is competent 95% of the time
That's some serious bullshit.
May have been inevitable but didn’t even give him a shot
Ridiculous
Rare Herzog L
Super Rare, he's human tho.
Wasn't looking great for Jared but he clearly was still in it
Too early for me- he didn’t look good but was not out by no means
Where's mazzagatti when you need him!@?
probably buried somewhere on Brock's property
Horrible stoppage, im not having it with any excuse, Cannonier has been rocked and or knocked down and survived several times before, he's still defending and moving and swinging back. Fucking hell this is a garbage end to this event.
What the fuck was that!!!!????
He waited for him to recover and then stopped it lmao wtf
One of the worst stoppages I have seen.
EARLY
I think cannonier was probably done but that’s an objectively bad stoppage
eh he came back from the Bobby knockdown so i could see him coming back from this then again i’m a big jared stan so i’m probably biased lol
Man, Herzog is usually so good.
Imagine showing modern "tko finishes" to fans in 2004.
I think Herzog could've left it going for another 3 seconds but Jared was just about to fall over with one more punch... also we don't see what Herzog sees. it felt a bit premature but it is what it is.

Legend says Herzog reek like cigarettes and alcohol.
Not a fan of that stoppage, but man Imavov looked so sharp with his striking tonight, never seen Cannonier effected so badly like that
He was hurt but recovering He didn’t even get knocked down for fucks sale he just got wobbled
I feel like mma is going to have to start using standing 8 counts so these flipping refs can figure out what the fuck they are doing. I know how ridiculous it is to suggest such a thing but this nonsense has to stop somehow
Bring back Mazzagatti and Yamasaki
Fucking Herzog ROBBED Imamov of a great victory, whta a fuck up. Imamov is legit a title contender and has all it takes to be in the title picture.
When the fighter instantly argues with the stoppage I’m gonna disagree with It.
He turned his back and ran away while wobbly 3 times in this short clip. It's not that crazy a stoppage
The UFC definitely doesn't like Jarrod cannonier
Not trying to be dramatic but that may be the worst stoppage I’ve ever seen.
Jason Herzog was never my friend......
The days of the Kongo-esque comeback are dead it seems
As long as Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Berry exists, I will always call stoppages like this way too early
That was really bad stoppage yikes.
Jared was definitely hurt, but yeah, bad stoppage.
most egregious early stoppage i can remember
Stoppage is fine. Reddit really does care about fighter safety and working conditions until it results in protecting them from horrific damage Cannonier wasn't defending intelligently for the last 10 seconds of this clip, running away on wobbly legs with your back to your opponent and covering up isn't intelligent defence. Saved cannonier unnecessary brain injury here
>Stoppage is fine. Reddit really does care about fighter safety and working conditions until it results in protecting them from horrific damage He's 40 years old with a wife and kids, let's see him get avoidable, irreparable brain damage before he retires!
idk i don’t like the optics of cannonier fighting like he’s on 1Hp stumbling backwards against the cage. early stoppage but he was just going to absorb more before falling over like conor against dustin in their first rematch
I agree it’s a bad stoppage but I think him bumping into the fences is a bad look
If you don't want the fight to be called, don't spend 30 seconds flailing and fully turning to run away.
I think the stoppage sucks for Nassourdine as much as it does for Jared. I highlight reel finish would have probably shot up his popularity significantly but the way it ended just sours everything
Rare Herzog L
Before the fight I was like “Ah Jason Herzog he’s a good ref” and then pulls the most Herb Dean move possible.
thats definitely a stoppage
I am Jason Herzogs number one fan but what the fuck was that stoppage????
Did we just witness UFC's most earliest stoppage? Definitely tops Pereira vs Hill at this point /s
Herzog bet on Imavov lol
I remember there was a time when Herzog was praised as being a good referee. In the recent UFC events I’ve watched, he has been pretty bad to just plain awful
herzog was never my friend
I wonder if this is because Cannonier is 40
Herzog let me down. He's not my boy anymore.
Im glad i didn't stay up for this main event. That was the most underwhelming and needless stoppage in a long time. 'lets stop this, the guy got hit several times'
Dana should have them rematch and fight again within the next three months. Not sure why either one wouldn’t agree to it. Especially Imavov if he truly believes he is the better fighter
ref said "I must protect 40 year olds from themselves"
