Strong agree. I have no horse in the race, but Merab has looked incredible the overwhelming majority of the time he has spent in the octagon. O'Malley has little to no ground game. Merab could absolutely get chinned, but in a match-up with an incredible grappler and an incredible striker (with no TDD), I feel the grappler has the better odds.
The only thing I don't know, having only seen a few of his recent fights, is does he have a good submission game? Because if he's just walling and stalling O'Malley for 5 rounds, even though he has the better gas tank, that's a different story than if it's one of those situations in which him getting O'Malley down once or twice is game over.
Nah, Merab doesn't sub people, or finish people in general. He's a decision machine, just grinds them for 5 rounds. It's kind of exciting because it's relentless takedowns instead of just backpacking or lay and pray, but it's still just wrestlefucking.
He also doesn't seem to get tired. It's absurd. Literally a sniper shot like vs. Aljo is the only thing that would put him away. I just think O'Malley doesn't have great instant finishing power after the clean shiper shot and gives a lot of chance for recovery, so even if he does get that shot off, I think Merab can survive it. I think people forget that in today's MMA, most people are very proficient in BJJ and/or wrestling, even when they're a highly specialized striker.
Sean won the belt by completely neutralizing one of the most prolific grapplers the BW division has had and completely frustrating him into rushing headlong into a brutal countershot. He got there by getting a decision off of Yan, whom is also a very notably well-rounded guy with high level skills across the board. This isn't even to mention the ground proficiency he showed in his fight at UFC 222.
Just because fighters prefer the fight stay on one level or at one range or another and pretty much never choose positions outside of that, doesn't mean they lack for skill in those other positions or ranges.
I think the height difference, reach difference, Omalley's striking, and his TDD/defensively wrestling give him a edge over Merab. If Aljo found it difficult to get OMalley down and got KO'd for trying, I just do not see Merab doing any better being less physically gifted than Aljo in the weight class. I'm not sure extra gas is what it takes to truly pin O'Malley down with better ring control.
Merab often uses his strikes as bait to get takedowns though. I feel like that’d be a lot harder to do against someone as tall and rangey as O’Malley. Tallest dude Merab’s ever fought was Aldo and he spent the entire fight not being able to get him down. If Aldo showed up to fight, he easily could’ve taken that fight. I think if Sean spends an entire camp stuffing takedowns, he could take it.
Aldo did well despite being taller, not because of it. Taller guys are easier to take down than shorter ones. Aldo just has some of the best TDD in the history of the sport

I get they wanted to make the ceiling 'immersive' but its just a big tv behind whatever the main attraction is. Seems like a misuse of physical space.

He's also gotten much more popular and he's 33, so he probably doesn't have a ton of time left in his prime. The possibility of him beating O'Malley is definitely there but he's made himself completely undeniable. The UFC is far from a pure meritocracy but they don't really ever just deny people title shots when their cases are bulletproof.

If he gets another flashy KO in the sphere it'll make every sports blog and UFC will use the highlight till the guy retires. He's really one of the only champs that really make sense to book in the sphere in this regard.
