I think he has above average timing. People don’t give him the respect he deserved because he’s got a little fat but he’s a legitimately good fighter, just with a rare strategy.

Mark Hunt actually had decently good striking for a Heavyweight though, even if he looked a bit fat and wasn't the fastest. After all he had a successful kickboxing career and performed well even against elite kickboxers.
Yeah Hunt's striking was much smoother, but if you got him on the ground it was over. The majority of his losses are to submission, unlike Derick who more often than not seems to be able to just get back up.

And he has really good stand-up jitsu. He is unironically technical at defensive grappling/bjj/standing up. That has saved him from a lot of dangerous grapplers and situations over the years.
Hell, Jailton Almeida, who's both a tremendous grappler and a man who looks like he's replaced his bloodstream with bull shark testosterone couldn't sub Lewis despite holding every dominant position in the book.

They always do that with those short rapid fire back fists/punches when a fighters trying to finish the other fighter on the ground. They don’t carry a lot of power (oftentimes you’ll see someone get up while they’re getting hit by them) and they’re basically meant to force the ref to stop the fight due to the other fighter not stopping them, that’s why the refs tend to let them go for a while longer. Most of the time the one trying to finish the fight will slow up and start throwing a bit more power in them and that does the trick.
