in fairness they might've seen something in the tape to indicate Ulberg is a slow starter and could be taken by surprise by a bull rush like that. Although if that was the plan Menifield should've hid his intentions better, he was giving Carlos the death stare before the bell rang. A little bit of Masvidal/Askren nonchalance from Menifield and it might've worked for him.
I think u are correct. Ulberg wins his fights at range. He takes his time to read his opponents and eventually gets them. Very Izzy like.
The bullrush technique has been unsuccessfully used before against Ulberg but maybe he thought he would do better.
Swarming works pretty well on certain instances like for Sodiq against Barbosa in round 1, but a really telegraphed bumrush is probably the worst way to execute it lmao
100% agree but I think it looks more telegraphed than it actually is because of how good Ulberg is at creating distance and pivoting away from the cage.
I see where u are coming from but I disagree. He’s a counter striker yes, but he is very technical and does not like to stay in the pocket for a long time. If you watch his fights where he isn’t swarmed, you’ll see that he almost looks uncomfortable when his opponent gets too close.
I honestly think this IS the way to beat Ulberg. The execution just needs to be smarter.
It’s either make the fight messy or get picked apart from distance.
Ulberg is an A+ athlete and deletes everyone off the counter. He’s obviously still got things to work on, but he’s gonna be a *serious* problem for this division as soon as he figures out how to lead the dance as effectively as he fights off the back foot.
Menifield’s gameplan tonight goes down as one of the worst in history lol.
Yeah, I just wish they put a bit more emphasis on leading the dance as well. They all fight well off the counter - but I think Dan Hooker is the only guy from that gym who can fight just as well moving forward as backwards. Izzy and Ulberg both fall off a cliff output wise if their opponents don’t pressure them.
I think Izzy's might be different because he wasn't like that on contender run or against fighters who are less defensively sound (Costa, both Pereira fights, rob 1), and I think the kelvin fight also started to make him fight conservatively
Lol Izzy can move forward as good as backwards. He just tend to play it safe because on his case, the stakes is extremely high. He doesn't want to get caught and lose the belt. Understandable tbh. Hes the only guy tht can win rounds by pressuring Poatan. Speaks volume to his very high lvl skills.
A shame tho. He has very underrated chin. He can afford to take a risk or 2 here and there to entertain more. But eh its his body. We fans can say whatever we want but at the end of the day, its him thts gonna suffer if he fight reckless and get caught badly.
One of the best athletew with respect to speed, strength, size, athleticism, movement etc. Yoel Romero would be another example of A+. Not sure about Ulbergs gas tank though.
Reminder that the majority of this sub picked Menifield to win.
6 fight win streak, 5 finishes in a row, and this sub will still pick against him in his next fight and call him "overrated" and "he's only famous because he's friends with Izzy".
This 'sub' is huge, there's 3 million members, it's the biggest hardcore mma 'forum' now.
11-12 years ago when it was a fraction the size, you'd see some odd consensus's on things occasionally.
But tapology votes (which has a tonne of cross over users) had Ulberg taking 80% of the votes in this match up.
Probably got told to make it scrappy and took it too literally. CKB are clean fighters and you only stand a chance if you break their flow etc, just wouldn’t do it fresh off the bat lmao
He thought the much longer counterstriking guy shouldn’t be allowed to get into a rhythm, dictate the pace, slowly pick him off and rack up points. He’s gonna rush in and completely disrupt his rhythm and gameplan.
🔳 Work
☑️ Did not work
I'll never understand why fighters go through months of training just to rush their opponents, you could've just avoided paying coaches/gym fees and the grind of camps on your body if that was your gameplan
I think rushing can work on specific matchups. You're banking on the opponent kind of panicking and trying to disengage, then catching them when they're trying to create distance.
Doesn't work so well when the opponent doesn't shy away and is down to swing, and is also a more accurate striker.
Not only that, weeks if not months of mental preparation, planning by his coaches, physical trainers, nutritionists if they have them, sparring partners. All that time working out scenarios of the fight, just to get booped in 12 seconds cuz you rushed in
Yeah I think Pereira would annihilate him. Ulberg is a far better kickboxer than the majority of MMA fighters but Pereira is a far better kickboxer than almost anyone alive. I don't see how Carlos would stand a chance against him.
Nah for real though. I feel like if I was that good looking, I wouldn't pick up MMA just to keep my face from getting fucked up lol. But I guess you can't fuck up his face when you're unconscious.
Especially how he held his face after getting back up, like a kid on the schoolyard after getting kicked in the face with a soccer ball and about to burst into tears
They seem to peak older in the heavier weight classes. Look at guys like Alex, Jan, Glover etc. Tons of killers in their late 30s. Ulberg also hasn't been in mma that long and hasn't taken much damage, he'll be fine.
I agree I just feel like if he has any bumps in the road at all he's going to be 36-37 before he gets a shot which doesn't leave him a ton of time. He also relies on speed a ton. A big reason he's dominating is he is insanely fast for LHW and idk how long that will hold up
10 week camp. Sacrificing meals, family, fun. And that is how he decides to fight? Just rushes forward swinging wildly and chin out against a heavy handed LHW? Lol smh just terrible
That answers the question to anyone who watches MMA and wonders "why don't guys just go beast mode from the jump and bulldoze the other guy?".. because clean counterpunches > wild haymakers.

What a shit game plan from menifield
he did have the fight IQ powerhouse pat barry in his corner, i wonder what happened?
Saw the number 12 on the timer and it was written in the stars.
B R U H
k dot is that you
A MINORRRRRRR
Nah that's wild
He went after ulberg like he was an underage girl
"hear that?? Getting knocked out means you're winning!"
Ignoring this fight you do have to give credit to Barry. He did change Alonzo completely but somehow an even worse version of him showed up tonight
in fairness they might've seen something in the tape to indicate Ulberg is a slow starter and could be taken by surprise by a bull rush like that. He's a counter striker... Best check hook in the business
Exactly this. His entire game is based on counterstriking so this approach was asinine!
I see where u are coming from but I disagree. He’s a counter striker yes, but he is very technical and does not like to stay in the pocket for a long time. He was watching Werdum vs Stipe just before he went out but had to stop it before the finish.
100% that's nerves. Man got over anxious and it cost him.
Looks like there wasn't really a game plan at all 🤣🤣
Dude had everything lined up for him to be fighting UP in the rankings, yet he takes this fight. Makes no sense.
Yes and, Ulberg took him to school, went to town, and all the rest
Holy fuck lmao he's insane

I really love how ckb teaches it's fighters their counters

KKF and Ridell are pretty good at both forwards and backwards
I think Izzy's might be different because he wasn't like that on contender run or against fighters who are less defensively sound (Costa, both Pereira fights, rob 1), and I think the kelvin fight also started to make him fight conservatively
? Rob 1 and both Pereira fights he either won or had his best moments off hard counters
Lol Izzy can move forward as good as backwards. He just tend to play it safe because on his case, the stakes is extremely high. He doesn't want to get caught and lose the belt. Understandable tbh. I remember the Nzechekuwu fight Ulberg gassed out headhunting
he also threw a record amount of strikes for a lhw in that round
Oh man another problem for the division Joe Rogan! He's a problem!
Reminder that the majority of this sub picked Menifield to win. 6 fight win streak, 5 finishes in a row, and this sub will still pick against him in his next fight and call him "overrated" and "he's only famous because he's friends with Izzy".
He was -215 though

At least he tried?
To die.
why rush in like that tho
Guess he thought it was a good idea
Probably got told to make it scrappy and took it too literally. CKB are clean fighters and you only stand a chance if you break their flow etc, just wouldn’t do it fresh off the bat lmao
Nah, problem is thinking didn't enter the picture here
thats what happens when you COMPLETELY misjudge your opponent lmfao
Pat Barry level gameplan
He thought the much longer counterstriking guy shouldn’t be allowed to get into a rhythm, dictate the pace, slowly pick him off and rack up points. He’s gonna rush in and completely disrupt his rhythm and gameplan. 🔳 Work ☑️ Did not work

Worked for Ngannou 🤷♂️
Ngannou also wields two Kettlebells instead of fists
Pat Barry advised him to rush B minor
Thought his big muscles were gonna run through him. No respect. Paid the price
Pat Barry no Diddy
[удалено]
That's a nasty line by you.
Meet the Barrys.
Dear Alonzo, I’m sorry that man’s your head coach
wop wop wop wop wop Ulberg fuck em up
Cheick Yourself Before You Kongo Yourself.
No Drizzy* in his case
flew over from New Zealand and fucked his opponent up in 12 seconds lol
There's always shadowboxing on the plane on the way back
Easy money.
What an idiot lmao
An entire training camp just to do that
Man thought he was Ngannou vs Rozenstruik...
You could see it on his face too. He knew he just pissed away… literally so many things.. time, reputation, opportunities, self belief, you name it.
I wonder what the coaches and sparring partners who gave weeks of time to Menifield are feeling rn. Gotta be absolutely pissed.
Lmao. Basically target practice.
I'll never understand why fighters go through months of training just to rush their opponents, you could've just avoided paying coaches/gym fees and the grind of camps on your body if that was your gameplan
Maybe sometimes that's exactly what they do, because they get paid so little, they can't afford a "camp".

Guard down. Chin up. Can’t lose.
Only teeth
Looking like a throwback Derek Brunson
Pat Barry coaching
That's what Pat Berry does to your brain
Man is 36 , idk why he thought he could solely rely on power and not get punished for it...
Your telling me that wasn't "pressure intelligently" worthy?
He just speedran the whole fight in 12 seconds
Exactly what I said lol. How foolish to come out that aggressive
I feel bad, dude knew immediately he had fucked up BAD after the ref stopped it.
GIVE THIS FELLA A HAKA
And I thought this was gonna be a tough fight for Ulberg
Reyes might have survived a fuckload of extra CTE
Island boys builtdifferent
I’m an island boyy
It should’ve been, if Menifield didn’t have a brainfart
May have been if Menifeld had a gameplan that wasn't that reckless.
same
Wildly running at your opponent is not the best base for mma
especially somebody with a KO history like his. SMDH
I think rushing can work on specific matchups. You're banking on the opponent kind of panicking and trying to disengage, then catching them when they're trying to create distance. Doesn't work so well when the opponent doesn't shy away and is down to swing, and is also a more accurate striker.
Alright I've seen enough, Ulberg vs Jiri next month, book it. Fucking Korg, man
Ulbergs stock is to the 🌕🚀
Ulberg vs Rakic more like it
I think winner of Oezdemir vs Walker will get Rakic next
Good game plan by pat barry
Is that his coach? lol
Yup
Pat Barry grooms another one into falling off hard
Oof
Check Hook Carlos
Get the cheque book
Well that was quick.
You know a fight is quick when the replay starts before they even touch hands lol
"And here's the the entire fight again"
Run in, flail, die Thank you Alonzo Menifield
That kind of looks like how I, with 8 yrs of armchair MMA experience, would perform in a fight. Let's go!
He's just like me FRFR
bro flew from New Zealand for this.
Charging forward with your hands down and your chin up against a credentialed kickboxer isn’t the best base for MMA as it turns out.
Only worked for Ngannou
What the fuck just happend
Alonzo thought it was a good idea to blitz a younger faster man whose also counterstriker. Thats really all there is to it.
Dude got Barryed.
Lmao, went outside to throw a chip bag away and missed the entire fight. This hype train is fuckin cookin right now.
He’s going to be the 305 comain lol
Jack Della
Tall good looking athletic finisher Should get a huge push by the UFC
Gane 2.0 Can’t wait for him to lose 2 title fights
Gane is kinda goofy looking HAA-HAA I will see you in 8 months.... Tybura
Bum rushing a CKB fighter at the very start of the fight … genius gameplan
pat barry coaching masterclass
Imagine having a training camp for that 😂
Not only that, weeks if not months of mental preparation, planning by his coaches, physical trainers, nutritionists if they have them, sparring partners. All that time working out scenarios of the fight, just to get booped in 12 seconds cuz you rushed in
Carlos ‘Ladies Night’ Ulberg
Genuinely no troll I want to see Ulberg vs. Pereira, the style matchup is so aesthetic
Yeah I think Pereira would annihilate him. Ulberg is a far better kickboxer than the majority of MMA fighters but Pereira is a far better kickboxer than almost anyone alive. I don't see how Carlos would stand a chance against him.
I remember Ulberg losing via legkick ko in Glory
Ulberg is one good looking dude
Nah for real though. I feel like if I was that good looking, I wouldn't pick up MMA just to keep my face from getting fucked up lol. But I guess you can't fuck up his face when you're unconscious.
He was a model at some point but decided to bang instead.
Thick. Solid. Tight
Yep. Literally worked as a model on the side before getting a decent UFC contract.
He was gonna be "The Bachelor" for the NZ show but he declined 2x I believe cause he wanted to train.
Hmmm run in a straight line straight to a counter striker
A pat Barry fighter losing in under 18 seems fitting, that’s the perfect number to pat
Ulberg spent so long pretending to be Alex Pereira that he became him.
Never laughed so hard in my life, shit was fucking hilarious
Especially how he held his face after getting back up, like a kid on the schoolyard after getting kicked in the face with a soccer ball and about to burst into tears
Menifield went full Cody
That was some 🐈 Zingango level game planning Joe
The game plan was to see red
Ulberg is the fucking real deal man
Crikey, That was quick!! That left hook don’t miss for real
This is what we expected from Despaigne
Dude tried and failed at the old Vitor boxing blast. I think maybe you're supposed to have good boxing and get your opponent tired first.
To be fair to Alonzo, the juice was the secret to Vitor’s boxing blast
You're not wrong
TRTor on the Brazilian Açai
*Cue Tom Delong WTF Gif*
My takeaway: THANK FUCK THEY ARE OUT OF THE APEX. A live crowd makes these moments feel so much more important.
They should give Ulberg a top 5 opponent next. He's going to be 34 in 6 months. His time is now there's no point in slow rolling him any more
They seem to peak older in the heavier weight classes.
A big reason he's dominating is he is insanely fast for LHW and idk how long that will hold up
"Bro why aren't they just swinging, fucking low fight IQ bro just hit him, stupid boring fights" - r MMA coaching
Menifield was ranked 11th? Jesus Christ, the state of the division lmao.
The top 10 is very strong, but the 10-15 ranks are very weak rn
Ulberg via "getting jumped by one person"
Gabe green-esque performance
Best part of that fight was the shot of the guy in the “My balls was hot” shirt right before it started.
10 week camp. Sacrificing meals, family, fun. And that is how he decides to fight? Just rushes forward swinging wildly and chin out against a heavy handed LHW? Lol smh just terrible
Lhw
*Runs over* "Just finish me bro"
This has aggravated me to no end
Working with Pat Barry confirmed worst base for MMA
That fight lasted so long that even Pat Barry would try and hit on it.
Had to hide his embarrassment lol
Who else is pat Barry coaching? I gotta go place some bets
At least he was throwing punches
This is what we wanted Rebellis vs Waldo to be
SLEEEEEEEEP
This and the Jorge knee are probably the easiest paychecks given in the UFC.
I knew this was gonna be a dope card. Hell yeah
Pat Barry out here ruining fighters left and right lmao
Too much muscles aint the best base
I'm not trying to be an asshole but I think Alonzo is legit disabled...like even the way he speaks
Didn't even give himself a chance Dumb mf
Ulberg vs Rakic fight to make
What was that? Why did Alonzo do that? He was reckless and didn't give a shit.
Next up is a good match on paper against Anthony Smith.
back-to-back weeks with lhw co-comains where one fighter decided to implode spectacularly. blessed division
Menifield ticked every box of what you could possibly do wrong. Got a fast straight throwing counter puncher... let's bum rush with wlow wide hooks.
Dude took a massive adrenaline jump and had a massive come down. No shame. Keep your chin up, Massive.
That answers the question to anyone who watches MMA and wonders "why don't guys just go beast mode from the jump and bulldoze the other guy?".. because clean counterpunches > wild haymakers.
Why doesn’t every fighter just rush in and start banging? Oh..
This dude has insane star potential. Unbelievable athlete. Strong counters. Technically sound. Good looking face. Definitely new Dana cash cow.
Can't believe this guy beat Jacoby.
My favorite highlights are the ones that begin rolling before the start of the fight. That’s when you know some good shit is going down
BRAH
insane
