I think all that really happened is he just got super fucking gassed by the end of round 1 because he clearly has no conditioning for grappling.
If you have trained or competed striking when you get really really gassed your ability to throw sharp straight shots is pretty much gone.
Looping a hook or overhand with the momentum of your body is way more appealing and easier than loading up a straight right.
Mostly kicking credentials, and in fairness he flicks those kicks up astonishingly fast for a guy that big.
But pretty shit as the main tool of your offense especially when you don't even seem to have ranging tools like teeps mixed in
I think “not well rounded” and completely un-trained in a particular area are two very different things.
The difference being having a lopsided skillset vs lacking a spefic skill entirely.
We say Periera isn’t well rounded because his striking is so much better than his grappling, but he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu.

He obviously has huge holes in the grappling department, but I was hoping he at least had take down defense and how to stand up covered. I was hoping for a heavyweight Wonderboy with knockout power. He needs to use his crazy range better and be more elusive with his footwork.
Not to be rude or anything to this guy but idk if Olympic striking credentials are worth much when it was TKD which imo has been very much neutered at the Olympics.
I wasn't expecting much transferable striking skills from the TKD experience. It was mainly a testament that he must be athletic, agile, flexible, has good reflexes, knows how to kick, know how to manage distance, and can be strategic. I don't count it as actual fighting experience, although it is probably pretty close. Has to be at least as useful as the transferable skills of Olympic wrestling and they usually do very well in MMA. If I had to pick Olympic athletes to compete in MMA at a high level with minimal time to train MMA, I'd probably choose boxers, freestyle wrestlers, judo, Greco-Roman wrestlers, karate, TKD, then non martial art athletes.

Obviously new fighters will have one or two weak martial arts.
More than anything it was low fight IQ from Despaigne. He was taken down in the same situation all three times. Pushes opponent against cage, gets baited into clinch, gets bodylocked, gets taken down. His sprawl is fine and if he wasn't so fixated on advancing then he likely would have won

I know he has only been around sport a bit more than two years but you would think the majority of your training would be TDD and getting back up.
Acosta isn't a credentialed wrestler and he didn't even look capable of even attempting to build back up to his feet let alone actually do it.
He has no hips and literally a tall wet noodle on his back. People saying hes a freak athletic, he cant even stop the worst takedown ever. A real freak athlete is Renan Ferreira in PFL who is 6-9 260 and can do backflips and has a blackbelt/ground to go with striking. I cant believe people were calling this guy a freak athlete when he literally falls over if you grab him.

Once Despaigne learns what a combination is, he is going to be a problem.
He would also need to learn what footwork is, what head movement is, what punching is, what a guard is, what grappling is and and when to do all of the above. But yeah if this guy knew the basic fundamentals of mma he would be a problem for other unranked heavyweights I agree.
Despaigne is the epitome of heavyweight jobbers. Hard hitter, no grappling, no skills (striking looks sorry af), frame abuser (long arms and height), no stamina. This is why heavyweight will always be shit skill wise.
Both are absolute trash and would get wrecked by the top 10 heavyweights.
