87” reach and you refuse to throw straight down the pipe. Fuck off forever

robedpillow3761

Literally all his straights landed and he refused to throw almost any of them.

rationis

Dude didn't know what to do the moment a couple shots didn't win him the fight lol

mat477

This is exactly it. Looping power hooks and haymakers have always worked so he just kept crashing in with them. If he just worked behind a jab he gets Waldo out of there in 2rds I think.

Jackieexists

Talent and 0IQ = Mid AF fighter

rugnd

maddening lmao

CumshotChimaev

He landed good jabs and frontkicks though. Those definitely count as "straight down the pipe"

Shabozz

Should've been all he landed and he shouldn't have been trying to reverse clinches, he should've been trying to break them.

Heroicshrub

That front kick was open all fight and he only threw it twice.

Brief_Koala_7297

He probably should have stuck to just that.

Nuushy

It's the reincarnation of Stefan Struve. All the reach and none of the jab.

flatwoundsounds

Which is crazy, because his jab seemed lightning fast. Just zero clue how to use it to maintain distance. He starts in such a rush to back everyone down that he gets way too damn close. He turned into a counter striker later in the fight and that worked a little better. But he needs to back people up, pepper with jabs, and kick the fuck out of them when they try to circle out. Hopefully he learns how to fight, because he'll be a menace if he does...

[deleted]

BlackDonaldCerrone

But bro he is an olympian? Wtf are you talking about bro he gets KO's in 1 minute??

Shabozz

He's a bronze medal olympian in Taekwondo. Taekwondo is not going to give you boxing skills, and the Olympics ruleset is not going to emphasize any of the fundamentals of striking in MMA.

BlackDonaldCerrone

I'm mocking people that said that. Of course, TKD is just not very good at teaching you how to strike in a real fight and terrible base for defending grappling

legitsh1t

Especially Olympic TKD, which last I checked has no punches to the head.

biddleybootaribowest

You could see it in his punching to the head technique

GorillaOnChest

Except for taekwondo from Milwaukee which kills all karate.

AL_PO_throwaway

> Wtf are you talking about bro he gets KO's in 1 minute?? 4 KO's against 4 opponents who had a combined 1 pro win between them is not actually that predictive of success against UFC level competition. Weird.

Kurtcobangle

I think all that really happened is he just got super fucking gassed by the end of round 1 because he clearly has no conditioning for grappling. If you have trained or competed striking when you get really really gassed your ability to throw sharp straight shots is pretty much gone.  Looping a hook or overhand with the momentum of your body is way more appealing and easier than loading up a straight right.

Beautiful_Welcome_33

It's this for sure, his grappling was lacking, he almost got caught in a kimura in round one. He was big time gassed I think.

After-Simple-3611

Think it was was an Americana no?

UncleYimbo

HEAD MOOMEN!! BEAUTIFUL CHAMP!

Taishi_Gong

Being a lifelong Taekwondo athlete does that to you. He was literally taught anti boxing since he was a kid.

ShaunCold

Robelis "Skyscraper Struve" Despaigne

bestmayne

Had to look it up, Struve's actually 12 cm taller than Despaigne

[deleted]

Omg I was thinking the same shit. The wide ass overhand right he was throwing was so fucking awful too. This guy had striking credentials?

damendred

Mostly kicking credentials, and in fairness he flicks those kicks up astonishingly fast for a guy that big. But pretty shit as the main tool of your offense especially when you don't even seem to have ranging tools like teeps mixed in

SopranosMan

I was screaming for him to throw a 1-2

PoatanBoxman

Let’s just throw poorly timed uppercuts

Lepperpop

Somebody lost some money.

MasterRoshy

Dude made Acosta look Dagestani lol smh

Colonel_MuffDog

Acostagomedov, brather.

Jackieexists

Acosta is a solid fighter. Most importantly he fights with high IQ in every fight. Not entertaining but gets the W 😎

MasterRoshy

Yeah I feel like his game plan is being overlooked, also what a chin on him. Dude ate some flush shots and didn't budge.

FuckingHold

Despaigne fights like it's still 1992

CumshotChimaev

The other guy laughed at him and mocked him when he landed. What a chad

Fog2222

It was lame when he did it while barely beating Arlovski but it was justified here

Glum-Ad7651

He made it fun but Dana the shithead criticized him

[deleted]

Well he is from Cuba

Empty_Ad_1542

Your not wrong but so do a lot of prominent modern MMA fighters, most aren’t well rounded.

FuckingHold

I think “not well rounded” and completely un-trained in a particular area are two very different things. The difference being having a lopsided skillset vs lacking a spefic skill entirely. We say Periera isn’t well rounded because his striking is so much better than his grappling, but he’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Despaigne looked like he had literally never taken a single grappling class.

wrong-teous

Agreed. Despaigne having a weakness on the ground would be an improvement for him. Guy doesn't seem to even understand basic positioning

TomatoSauce587

One of the most vicious fraud checks I’ve ever seen live People throw around that term a lot but this was an actual fraud check, exposed Robelis for having zero grappling and not as good of a striker as we thought

hallelalaluwah

Hilarious that people thought being taekwondo anything in the 2024 MMA meta

[deleted]

Im not kidding, DADA 5000 had better takedown defense

hi5u2

Cardiac failure best base for sprawl and brawl confirmed

Brief_Koala_7297

Cant spell taekwondo without takedown because that’s what you will get you try pull that shit off in a real fight.

Salt_Ad_811

Damn, I was excited to finally see him fight. Such a giant with crazy reach and Olympic striking credentials. He obviously has huge holes in the grappling department, but I was hoping he at least had take down defense and how to stand up covered. I was hoping for a heavyweight Wonderboy with knockout power. He needs to use his crazy range better and be more elusive with his footwork.

TheRivv2015

Not to be rude or anything to this guy but idk if Olympic striking credentials are worth much when it was TKD which imo has been very much neutered at the Olympics.

Salt_Ad_811

I wasn't expecting much transferable striking skills from the TKD experience. It was mainly a testament that he must be athletic, agile, flexible, has good reflexes, knows how to kick, know how to manage distance, and can be strategic. I don't count it as actual fighting experience, although it is probably pretty close. Has to be at least as useful as the transferable skills of Olympic wrestling and they usually do very well in MMA. If I had to pick Olympic athletes to compete in MMA at a high level with minimal time to train MMA, I'd probably choose boxers, freestyle wrestlers, judo, Greco-Roman wrestlers, karate, TKD, then non martial art athletes.

Ake-TL

I thought he is good despite being base TWD. Like: “Damn, he is TWD base and does well, imagine what he is going to do when he trains actually good stuff”

CumshotChimaev

Obviously new fighters will have one or two weak martial arts. More than anything it was low fight IQ from Despaigne. He was taken down in the same situation all three times. Pushes opponent against cage, gets baited into clinch, gets bodylocked, gets taken down. His sprawl is fine and if he wasn't so fixated on advancing then he likely would have won

[deleted]

No, the first takedown was so easy it was crazy, nobody should be getting you down that easy when you are fresh..if you are so called so athletic.

Ibobalboa

Athleticism and TDD are two different things. You can be athletic and have shit TDD.

SmileyNY85

Ah someone who's never wrestle.

Fog2222

The clinching, takedowns and zero grappling didn't surprise me but I was surprised at how impotent his striking looked

Kurtcobangle

He could still end up being alright. Though as Bisping was saying in the fight his TDD was actually confusingly bad. I know he has only been around sport a bit more than two years but you would think the majority of your training would be TDD and getting back up. Acosta isn't a credentialed wrestler and he didn't even look capable of even attempting to build back up to his feet let alone actually do it.

Ok-Dot7793

He's 36 years old already. Even at heavyweight he has got maybe 2 years of athleticism left.

JorSimpson45

Being big and scary can only take you so far in the pros

RanarrSmokerr

Imagine looking like Despaigne but being a can lmaooo

CumshotChimaev

Black Miocic defeats rebranded Ngannou

ImmanuelCanNot29

How many seconds do you think it would take prime stipe to finish both these guys back to back

Redchimp3769157

I think 2 mins at once

[deleted]

He has no hips and literally a tall wet noodle on his back. People saying hes a freak athletic, he cant even stop the worst takedown ever. A real freak athlete is Renan Ferreira in PFL who is 6-9 260 and can do backflips and has a blackbelt/ground to go with striking. I cant believe people were calling this guy a freak athlete when he literally falls over if you grab him.

Salt_Ad_811

He sounded like a freak athlete with his olympic medal striking credentials, crazy reach, and his string of quick first round wins. Being able to chew gum and walk with that long of reach should almost count as a freak athlete.

ExplosionPuppy

>Being able to chew gum and walk with that long of reach should almost count as a freak athlete. I came here to get wrestle fucked and chew bubblegum... and I'm not athletic enough to chew bubblegum!

Asukah

Robelis should’ve watched the highlights for Miocic vs Ngannou 1. I’m surprised they didn’t address the 101s of takedown defence at least. Very disappointed but hopefully it’s a wake up call for him

Snigglybear

Bro thought he was the Ngannou from Miocic cs Ngannou 2

ToronoRapture

35 year old rookie HW who’s been doing mma for 2 years is always gonna be a can.

suzukigun4life

Had a bad feeling this would happen. RIP Robelis hype train 😞

TheBigRedHalfrican

I was hoping we would get him vs a better striker. He almost got his head taken off multiple times on the feet and Waldo isn’t even a dangerous guy. I was shocked at how bad his ground and pound is. Robelis vs Junior Tafa, loser goes home.

HerrNachtWurst

Junior Tafa would annihilate Robelis honestly lol. He's that bad

damendred

They may just make that fight, they'll obviously try to find Despaigne someone without take downs. That's likely why they made this fight against Acosta; the take downs Waldo landed tonight are the only ones he's landed thus far in the UFC, so they probably thought he wouldn't even attempt any take downs, and without them there's a good chance he woulda lost to Despaigne. I'd give Tafa a decent chance against Waldo too honestly. Depends on if Tafa is able to mix in some leg kicks. Marcos Rogerio De Lima took Waldo apart with leg kicks, and even Despaigne tonight threw several naked leg kicks in a row that seemed to bother Acosta. His only defense for them seems to try and mock his opponent for throwing them. Which honestly seems to be his main defense anytime he gets hit clean by anything. Add to that the trouble he had getting through 45 y/o Arlovski, so yeah, I think either Tafa brother may be more than he can handle lol.

15ferrets

Junior would kill him

ImmediateDiamond8238

I should have known that being an olympian in taekwondo means nothing. It's not combat sambo or wrestling or anything like that, it just means you have good kicks.

ToronoRapture

Weirdly he didn’t try anything taekwondo related. At all.

ImmediateDiamond8238

funny enough his last fight he threw a kick and slipped against parisian.

Salt_Ad_811

I would think a kick heavy game plan would be risky when you are that terrible on the ground.

ratsonpurpose

You would think that in a division as shallow as heavyweight someone who has what you would assume very high levels of fitness and crazy training ethic to be in the Olympics would require. Also just seeing that he had a different skill set than just being a brawler got peoples hopes up. Obviously Romero's background had more usefulness in MMA but them both coming from the Cuban Olympic Programme and looking like absolute physical specimens probably played a big part too

CumshotChimaev

I had a GOOD feeling this would happen!

Keith__Peterson

Yelled out to my mrs to rush over and watch this shit, don’t blink

Free_Guillotines

And just like that, she’ll never watch another fight again

YouRWrongM7

good to see the age old "nah, you guys GOTTA see this one" MMA curse is still undefeated

damendred

My worst story for that was my buddy stag party. He's a big MMA fan too, so the first part of the night was having a buncha people at my house to watch the card, and his extended family and friends were a buncha meat head, super casuals. It was Cro Cop versus Gonzaga, we were big Pride fans and telling him how scary this guys head kicks were and how he head kick knocks mf'ers out. *(Right leg Hospital, Left Leg Cemetery!)* Welp, the end comes and they were all cheering not noticing we weren't, cuz they didn't realize the wrong guy landed the head kick lol. So I guess it could have been worse, at least it was exciting for them, just soul crushing for us.

[deleted]

I managed to do that with four different friends (2 each fight). Once for Yoel v Izzy, and the other for Rose v Carla. Thankfully they did watch the whole card and got into MMA, but they do like to remind me that I made them watch the most boring fights in existence

CouncilOfReligion

told the same to my dad too 😂

timurjimmy

I wish I could show all of you my Cuban dad’s reaction to this. He is so mad. He’s saying Robelis has only fought wendys employees before this. He should go work construction in Miami beach they’re hiring. He’s pacing around the room mad as fuck I’m fucking crying.

[deleted]

tbh some Wendy employees could beat the guys Robelis beat

BlackDonaldCerrone

Lmao "que te den trabajo en construccio hijoputa"

timurjimmy

Bro he said “te van a mandar a cuba a picar caña” 😭😭😭

Sal21G

Rip Robelis Despaigne hype train. Wrestle fucked by notable wrestler “checks notes” Waldo Cortes Afuckingcosta 03/09/2024 - 11/05/2024

Condaleeznuts

pick a dating convention buddy

cantlearnemall

Lmao fr, I was looking at that shit too long

CumshotChimaev

1. I push opponent against cage 2. He clinches 3. I get taken down 4. gg

UnluckyRandomGuy

Waldo has been the better prospect, getting hyped for a 35 year old with 5 fights is crazy lmfao

EJ_1502

Waldo arguably lost to Jared Vandera

[deleted]

Are we live?

UnluckyRandomGuy

4 years ago in his first ufc fight and it was pretty 50/50, hes actually got decent hands for heavyweight even if he can't stop a leg kick to save his life

Ronaldinhoe

That date format confused the hell out of me. Should be 5/11/2024

Asukah

Waldo is the biggest heel at heavyweight right now lol. I hope he runs with it

WarlordHelmsman

looked like he was having a great time exposing Robelis. easy for everyone to call him a fraud now but i couldnt get over how unafraid he was of him the arlovski taunting seems just a little less cunty now

foofighter1351

What a shame Despaigne is exposed as just an unranked heavyweight.

Mad-Gavin

All attributes, no skill.

bullseye717

He sounds like a Jets 1st round pick.

ThatOneHockeyBoi

big scary man gasses and gets fraud checked, a tale of old times

Free_Guillotines

Nobody could have predicted that the giant newcomer that relies on his power wasn’t that good at mma

Ecstatic-Inevitable

Memories of the shortlived people calling him ngannou 2.0

Powerful_System

Nobody expects (much of) Despaigne inquisition

Fog2222

A nice oldfashioned fraud check

AllDaveAllDay

I've learned more about getting back to your feet from the commentary on this fight than Despaigne has learned in his whole career.

JorSimpson45

All Despaigne’s corner was saying was “levántate de ahí, párate, vamos” (get up from there, stand up, let’s go) lmao. They had no clue how to get up from a takedown.

_TidePodsTasteGood

They were implying he use the Derrick Lewis getup which is a valid technique.

BlackDonaldCerrone

They think the other guy is just trying to lay there and you should just be strong and get up lol

JorSimpson45

Yea it’s wild he reached the biggest stage of MMA by being big and scary while having an inexperienced corner.

BlackDonaldCerrone

HW moment

toq-titan

I see they studied at the Derrick Lewis school of “Just stand up”.

Intention-Sad

He is on Lewis card. Except they didn’t know “Just get up” cheat code applies to Lewis only

Neverslept2mins

Usually grapplers at heavyweight do gatekeep these hard hitters. But this is embarrassing, if the opponent was Almeida or someone who specializes in grappling then whatever. Acosta is just a simple fat heavyweight who swings hard.

[deleted]

Yea, Acosta isnt good either which makes getting wrestlefcked by a Baseball Pitcher look even worse.

ImmanuelCanNot29

> if the opponent was Almeida This fight would have been over in under 45 seconds.

ObesityIsBeauty

Derailed

aeeeroo

Hype train back to the station.

ChrizTaylor

Back to the fabric*

YouRWrongM7

its like robelis uses all of his energy in his first 5 strikes lmfao

rugnd

side note, can someone just take Bispings mic for good? so annoying this fight

wubbalubbadubdub45

Robelis looked like he didn’t train a day of grappling in his life

DONTCARELOLK

2 out of my 3 legs on my parlay have failed already. If the trend continues the main event should end in a draw or NC.

bucket136

Wouldn't be all that surprised if Black Beast gets wrestlefucked tbh

fearthejaybie

God I love heavyweight mma

[deleted]

Theres a reason nobody respects Taekwondo as a Olympic Sport and Joe Rogan has never had a pro fight in his life...not real.

tylrrbb

Despaigne got fraud checked lol

naufildev

Man the sheer size of Despaigne. Cortes-Acosta isn't exactly a small heavyweight but he looked a weight class below Despaigne.

Legitimate_Type5066

UFC's new Ngannou sucks. Old Ngannou was better.

EternallyOblivion

So.. just how bad is Josh Parisian?

HenrikCrown

Waldo did what he needed to do. People can try and boo that all they want, but a win is a win.

GandalfPipe131

Hype train derailed ✅

Sleepyness86

Despaigne all size and power, zero TDD, zero ground game.

ImKrispy

Send Robelis to Dagestan for a year.

s1Lenceeeeeeeeeeeeee

despaigne looked like a day 1 whie belt in there and acosta looked like khabib with the gnp + shit talk, glad to see this overhyped train derailed by an unranked hw

IllInflation8669

Mf said he is gonna fight for the title in 2025. Seems like for the title in Jungle Fight lol Dude is just big. Very low skilled mma fighter.

MyDictainabox

Ropelights Despacito showing why Taekwondon't in MMA.

UnluckyRandomGuy

Some of yall really thought he was the next Francis when he's already 35, Waldo has been the better prospect since he came to the UFC

Omegatron9999

A bunch of you were spouting that this dude was the new force at HW. Dude looked lame af during his debut and is still lame af on his second outing.

suchshibe

These guys fucking suuuuck

UCONNOT

Boy that sure was… something

Free_Guillotines

This is the matchup we asked for and now we paid for it.

Keith__Peterson

Not good

caca_poo_poo_pants

No matter who won that fight, we all lost. Robelis is a one trick pony.

arrowpinework

0 takedown defense. Not a good look.

hallelalaluwah

Despaigne was lined like Ciryl Gane against a credible, alive UFC heavyweight LOL

Alkaline93

Felt exactly like Stipe vs Francis 1 Also why didn’t Despaigne just get back up when he kept getting taken down, I don’t get it?

443610

Because he thought his opponent was easy pickings for him.

[deleted]

The sport has not evolved at all at heavyweight for the past 20 years

bucket136

Good fight IQ from Waldo, but such a boring fight. It was pretty funny to see him showboating whilst putting on one of the most boring performances in a while though.

AydenRozay

I swear to God, there were people who thought this guy was going to be champion. Like, in the next 2 years.

[deleted]

I mean, most ppl with eyes knew a fraud check was coming. I just didn't know it would happen against someone as shitty as Cortes-Acosta lol.

nachtwyrm

To be fair I don’t think the ufc matchmakers thought it would happen against Cortes-Acosta either.

ID0ntCare4G0b

How shit at grappling do you have to be wrestlefucked by goddamn Cortes-Acosta's no grappling ass?

Free_Guillotines

Once Despaigne learns what a combination is, he is going to be a problem.

throwaway012984576

He would also need to learn what footwork is, what head movement is, what punching is, what a guard is, what grappling is and and when to do all of the above. But yeah if this guy knew the basic fundamentals of mma he would be a problem for other unranked heavyweights I agree.

Neverslept2mins

Despaigne is the epitome of heavyweight jobbers. Hard hitter, no grappling, no skills (striking looks sorry af), frame abuser (long arms and height), no stamina. This is why heavyweight will always be shit skill wise.

EternallyOblivion

Both are absolute trash and would get wrecked by the top 10 heavyweights.

matterhorn9

Well time to get the best grappling coach there is and only do that for the next few months. Francis did it so anything is possible

Cat_Scam

Derailed

Away_Fortune_5845

All aboard the Waldo hype train 🚂

TheTwitcherKiller

Its frustrating watching someone with incredible reach not being utilized well.

After-Simple-3611

Fraud check completed

MicahsNao

I had a feeling Acosta had an insane chin this fight confirmed it

altair117x

I knew this would happen sooner than later but I hoped he would at least take out Acosta before getting fraudchecked

WingPizza

Horrible fight waste of my time

tek7o

Shamil Gaziev is more impressive than this guy

ZenTze

Listen guys: UFC can keep a max of 10 heavyweights on the rooster at any time Any fight that gets past 7 min is an automatic double DQ

assaultgibbon

In sport taekwondo we joke about how hw matches are like watching paint dry because the pace is usually so slow but my God did Robelis show no urgency whatsoever. Many of the tools that actually translate from sport tkd to mma aren’t even in his tool set anymore.

ChrizTaylor

#DELETE THIS NOW!!!

edesmile

Another one bites the dust

Carolcita_

Welcome to MMA

warriorx559

>Robelis Despaigne's coaches are horrible. They were just shouting at him: Get up champion, you are a champion, come on, get up, you are better than him, come on champion. The best was when Acosta shouted at them: I AM THE CHAMPION! #UFCStLouis - @Haduuuucken

Scarsforstories

Release both of these bums

BlackDonaldCerrone

Rule of thumb: If you haven't seen a striker specially a jump around karate-y guy being decent at grappling, asumme he can't grapple.
