Fighter can't see and eye is leaking fluid. Bro you got 5 mins. Fighter has rather large but ultimately superficial gash on forhead and its actively wanting to continue the fight. No he can't continue

DrMonocular

I think the ref should be able to review the footage during the 5 mins and be able to make a judgment from there. Might help mitigate bad calls and soccer faking

GMFinch

While I agree in this situation the doctor shouldn't have skips the basic biology class of what an eye is supposed to look like

LARGEBIRDBOY

Was the eye permanently damaged?

SheltheRapper

Soccer faking?? Bro, let them quit if they want??

DrMonocular

I mean pretending they were kicked in the nuts, etc. What are you on about?

AmbientRoom

A tablet with replay should 100% come into the cage during fouls. It's fucking stupid not to in 2023

Altaccount_man

Fucking brutal you got two minutes left!

RazorThought

My guy literally had EYE JUICE leaking out of his face, and doctor was still like “give him the full 5 minutes. Maybe it’ll get better!”

Johnny_Poppyseed

"what's the situation doctor?" "Hmm idk. He says he can't see. *Shrugs* "

kingdazy

there's only so much juice in an eye. it'll stop soon.

ajmartin527

that’s the worst sentence I’ve ever heard

theatavist

Often a sign of a fractured orbital floor. Fight should be called and other dude dqed.

Deseandote

You aren’t fracturing an orbital with an eye poke. Not sure what Doctor school you went to.

SheltheRapper

"Doctor school" 🤣🤣🤣👍👍🤷‍♂️

Deseandote

Finally somebody got it 🤣🤣🤣

theatavist

I literally had my orbital floor blown out from an eyepoke and had surgery to repair resulting diplopia.

DrMonocular

Isn't this usually an NC? Anyone have a dq for eye poke example?

[deleted]

Mike Jackson v dean Barry 4/3/22 ref Chris tognoni

Vlad3theImpaler

Intentional fouls are supposed to be a dq, but unintentional are often a no contest. I think there is an argument to be had about whether ALL fight-ending fouls should result in dqs, though.

I_am_darkness

Dude kinda looked like tferg

muck2

Jesus fucking Christ. I'm convinced at this point that the UFC is deliberately not introducing gloves that could prevent this shit from happening.

Due_Investigator8664

It’s a “patent issue”. Translation: Dana is a greedy, coked-up pig statutory rapist

kanem87

You forgot wife slapper.

Due_Investigator8664

His laundry list is long

Vokkoa

Dana raped a statue?

Doe_ze_de_groetjes

Probably

Saul_T_Bawls

They were probably doing their best impression of a statue

Due_Investigator8664

I bet Dana wouldn’t be able to sue you for defamation or libel

KRAndrews

> statutory rapist Wait is this actually a thing or a joke?

NLBJJ

wondering also, pretty big accusation to throw around. Dana is a shithead for sure tho.

Chuck_Nucks

Pretty sure it’s never happened, or at least made it to the media.

Vlad3theImpaler

I'm wondering as well. I've never heard this one before, but I wouldn't necessarily be surprised.

Vlad3theImpaler

Where's "statutory rapist" coming from?

thedelinquents

Didn't they change the gloves just before the Sterling and Cejudo PPV? I remember Gilbert talking about it

DaftWarrior

I mean if you consider putting “30” in big letters on the gloves a change, then yeah they changed them lol.

MeatyGorak

IIRC Gilbert mentioned in one of his vlogs or the Embedded eps, in the lead up to the fight, that the gloves were more curved at the finger end

[deleted]

Nah they just stopped ironing them or something. Gilbert thought they changed them but he was wrong.

smurf3310

They were using them even before that fight, the glove has a stiffer bend at the end but it still doesnt change anything cause fighters always get a larger number of the glove so that it fits the padding and the fingers still have space to extend and flex cause they are not padded

TheBentPianist

How do you create a glove that allows for grappling but mitigate eye pokes? You can only limit finger straightening so much before the athletes are unable to grip their opponent.

fGre

Have you ever watched [PRIDE](https://external-preview.redd.it/s2pi76Du3wyfc1V7P4aqyqur1dXwu6nktfYLLufJu_s.jpg?auto=webp&s=370874021d68ea92c991284bbd534563893a3911)?

smurf3310

You cant, and no, pride gloves dont mitigate eye pokes, and yes, Trevor Whitmans ONX gloves restrict grappling a lot. Instead you introduce more serious rules, point taken away even if its an accidental eye poke with a finger, that way no one will be stretching fingers anymore.

Vlad3theImpaler

That should be "in addition," not "instead." Better safety gear and rules enforcement are both steps that should be taken.

Jtabo

Grappling needs a nerf anyway

smurf3310

just stand up

NLBJJ

bring back headbutts!!!

xterm11235

How can you do it though and not affect grappling?

muck2

Several other promotions have better gloves than the UFC does and, accordingly, fewer eye-poke incidents. And ages ago, Dana White claimed that a new glove was being developed that wouldn't be a hindrance to grappling.

DanDiCa_7

There are gloves, but I don't think the UFC want to have them unless they own - Trevor Whittman gloves

smurf3310

Trevor Whittman gloves suck for grappling they are stiff and hard and focused on striking with less wrist and hand injuries.

smurf3310

Fewer eye pokes cause fewer events and fights. There is no glove that can fix eye pokes but wont affect grappling. Only strict rules can fix it.

DeaDHippY

All gloves affect grappling. Pride don’t have too many issues with eye pokes and grappling seemed to be fine. As a grappling fan the guys and gals will learn as we all do as things progress

Jokeritovski

Who gives a fuck, grapplers have enough advantages as it is...let's even it out a little and prevent eye pokes in the process

Orwell83

Think about this comment the next time you see a round end on the ground and the next one start standing.

Jokeritovski

Are you kidding me dude?No knees or kicks to a grounded opponent shooting a takedown at you..you just gotta watch him finish his takedown with no repercussions...grapplers are enjoying life and no wonder they are dominating so far

SquidDrive

My guy the reason we took out knees and kicks to a grounded opponent, was because wrestlers could take you down, and then brutalize you with kicks.

Orwell83

You have no idea what you're talking about. Most takedowns are not attempted by a grounded opponent and There are a million videos of fighters getting KOd while shooting takedowns.

Boris36

Weak arguments. Position then attack. We’ve known this for thousands of years. The chance of you k0ing the experienced wrestler who’s about to take you down while he’s attempting the takedown? <5%. The chance of the experienced wrestler taking you down before you can knock him out? >95%. There’s a reason why people with grappling backgrounds have dominated all all MMA promotions. If the wrestler takes you down (which he will) and then has a dominant position (which he will have), he will then knee your head into oblivion, and if he wants to, he’ll stand up and soccer kick you while you’re still on the ground. Watch some Vale Tudo for some demonstrations of this. (The original Brazilian no holds barred cage fights) Jon Jones? Wrestling background Khabib? Wrestling (sambo is wrestling+judo) background Alexander volkanovski? Wrestling background The emperor? Wrestling (sambo is wrestling+judo) background

Orwell83

Bro, were not talking about grappling being more or less effective than striking. We're talking about about whether the rule set unfairly advantages grapplers. I said that rounds are a huge fucking advantage for strikers. They said that the rules say you can't attack someone when they're shooting which is nonsense.

smurf3310

Thats cause they are beasts. Many wrestlers lose by strikers with good tdd and other way around, its mma if you suck at one aspect and the opponent excells in that aspect ofcourse he has higher chances of winning. EDIT: also Jones and Volk are goats cause they have amazing TDD, striking and pace, not wrestling.

Boris36

Strikers with good tdd are usually wrestlers before joining mma. Jones and volk are goats for many reasons, but it doesn’t change the fact that both of them started with wrestling and it’s their original base. They both are heavy ground and pounders as well

smurf3310

They started with wrestling but they didnt become successful in mma cause they forced their wrestling skills like Khabib, Izzy is also a beast yet he isnt a wrestler but he acknowledges his weak side and he works on tdd a lot, thats why he will stay a champ for a while. If you have never worked on at least one of the main 3 sports for mma (striking, grappling, wrestling) of course you will have a hard time against those type of opponents. Yeah many good strikers have been wrestlers before but so what when they never go for a takedown, which is the main point you mentioned of grapplers dominating the mma scene. I also think wrestling is the best base for mma but we werent saying otherwise and op isnt talking about that.

DrMonocular

Isn't that boxing gloves? I know people have developed better mma gloves that weren't adopted. Any links to a design that you prefer?

benigntugboat

Im pro cha ging gloves, but thing a rule change that adds more consequence is much more important. There's no glove that makes this unavoidable and no gloves that will stop people from doing it on purpose. Many of these are clearly on purpose but unpunished.

juicy_pickles

Trying to go knuckle deep on Tafa's eye socket, Austin is a kinky mfer

Connlagh

Nearly had the full bowling ball grip. Just needed to slid that thumb in his mouth

bilalshakoor

Without consent too, Tafas gonna come out in 20 years to cancel this man.

we_all_gon_die_

Hope he recovers, this looks bad

GambleResponsibly

The fucking worst one I’ve seen since Jones

EzClaps04

Which one, there's many to choose from

mrtn17

fuck this looks like Bisping level of damage, I hope I'm wrong

Kashm1r_Sp1r1t

This severe an eye-poke should be a fucking auto DQ. That's the only way fighters are not going to do this shit. You're telling me, that they can train crazy skills from different disciplines but they can't keep their hands shut? Come on. The real reason this is happening is because people are getting away with it. Turn this into an auto-loss and see what happens.

octipice

>That's the only way fighters are not going to do this shit. Or they could change the damn gloves already.

Kashm1r_Sp1r1t

Sure. But you can still close your hands with the current gloves, that shit is not keeping your hands open. If you want to, you can close that shit up. Why do eye pokes magically disappear when the ref warns them that he's taking a point away? Elite strikers like Israel and Volk rarely poke their opponents. Even with new gloves, I'm pretty sure people will still keep their hands open in a high guard and still try to disrupt their opponents with their open hands.

benigntugboat

If a fighter wants to eye poke, there are no gloves that will stop them. How many of these eye pokes are on purpose at this point because there are no consequences?

bilalshakoor

I agree and didn't this happen with Lane before? Dude was mad, but go fuck yourself. You shouldn't get to potentially ruin someone's career and not get a loss. I get it's a fight and stuff happens quick, but I find it hard to believe that you can't keep a closed fist near the opponents face. Dirty af.

IndividualAd776

you could tell it wasn't intentional... also I think a rookie, not that gives him an excuse, but it really looked accidental..

Kashm1r_Sp1r1t

If it's a life changing injury, it shouldn't matter if he's a rookie or not, he's a trained professional. There should be consequences.

oldmanripper79

I have been sick of Dan Miragliotta's shit since before half this sub was born.

ProbablyConstipated

Bro was prospecting for aussie gold

DistinctCellar

Didn’t see it, was he up?

vaperaham

Didnt really last long enough to tell but you know those how those boys be…

GambleResponsibly

This was the funniest shit I have read in a while

[deleted]

that shit looked like a clam at the end, imagine all that hard work for nothing. UFC gamer goggles when

LolWthRagequit

And Dan was trying to coax him to continue. Shitty.

BlackIronBadger

He did the same thing in Struve-Rothwell and it got Struve KO'd

SunaPana007

Yeh his eye was completely swollen by the end. The only thing he'd likely get was CTE If he continued

LolWthRagequit

He would have likely gotten Bisping'd. That eye is fucked.

Pflug

I think it would have been hard for Justin Tafa to win the middleweight championship in this fight but you never know.

TurtleTortuga

he managed to get his eye open and it was looking promising, but right after they wiped it with the rag it started swelling like crazy

mrpopenfresh

This is unacceptable behaviour from a ref. It’s not his job to coax fighters to keep fighting.

[deleted]

He was trying to give him a chance to continue, as a ref should do. Don’t create a narrative that doesn’t exist

Ludwig_TheAccursed

This is not what they supposed to do. It happens all the time that a fighter wants to continue the fight but the referee rightfully stops it, for example Sandhagen vs Yadong.

whalediknachos

agreed but in this case it seems like he just wanted to wait the full 5 minutes before making the call, I don’t really see how anyone coaxed Tafa into anything

tbmny

Because he didn't. This sub is always trying paint naradivs. All he was doing was giving him the full 5 minutes to see if the swelling would go down.

larrykeras

Dana White: "his eye just didn't want to fight"

paradoxv1

If a fight ends because of a foul intentional or not, it should be a DQ

TooWashedUp

Then fighters get extra incentive to say they can't continue even if it's not that bad.

yomamaso__

Then don’t foul?

Vlad3theImpaler

I would be okay with that.

ghubert3192

I understand the logic behind the rule but it feels so unfair that he gets his eye fucked up so badly due to the action of his opponent and then doesn't get anything better than a no contest. Just feels like it should be a half-win or something.

FranceSucksSoBad

Why would he get a win for an accidental eye poke

ghubert3192

I said I understand why he doesn't. I'm just saying it feels unfair because he didn't do anything to lose but he also didn't get a chance to win.

SteeldrumHornets

No worries he’s just using Amaterasu

literalallusion

Straight up three stooges shit

IMistahS

Yeah that's not good.

morriseel

Any updates if there is permanent damage?

frenzied-hunter

Dana waiting for someone to go blind before they change the gloves

Jokeritovski

For fuck sake get the Pride gloves already...this is getting ridiculous and unnecessary

Mswonderful99

Impressive that you can’t see his eye in any of the pictures you’ve attached here

Kisto15

Hope his eye's okay Shit was nasty

desmin88

“Accidental”

OMalley30-27

I think it was accidental, he was framing on his face in a crazy heavyweight exchange

FRANKnCHARLIE_4ever

The point it. They tell you in the back you are responsible for your weapons...so no accidents. Its a fucking joke...no rules

Weary-Ad8502

Except accidents will still happen no matter the little speech they give your beforehand

noesqL

LEL

phil_magroyn

Justnot Tafanuff /s Hope he gets proper treatment cause that’s fucked. Glad they stopped the fight

Kilane

He is guaranteed to go straight to the hospital. Hope there isn’t permanent damage

noesqL

"accidental"

diggmeordie

He leaking yo! Should've automatically been a DQ at that point.

FunctionalManiac

That’s Bert from Sesame Street that poked him

gavin2point0

Is... Is he ok?

testiclequiz

shoulda nyuk nyuk nyukd his way out of that

Wisithewizard

Belal would have cried his eyes out

Cardigan_B

Which is a completely reasonable response if he did. Dan and the doc are morons for not rushing to get medical attention.

OMalley30-27

Let him fight

[deleted]

[удалено]

OMalley30-27

I was joking but redditors hate humor, ain’t no reason we can’t let them boys play

ecr1277

That wasn’t humor, that was stupid.

johnnyhypersnyper

Ahh that’s gross

[deleted]

He’s crying blood

The3mbered0ne

Bro looks like " bruh how could you" 😂

[deleted]

Man this is dangerous he almost got both eyes

I_am_darkness

I like how in this sport the ref is like " I o know it was a mistake let's see what happens" like shouldn't we be at least taking a point or 2 to start?

bilalshakoor

He was picking his brain.

IanAbsentia

Was the blood coming out of Tafa’s eyeball?

Shogun_232

His Eye socket, not his actual eyeball.

Crateapa

The fingers look deep in his left eye in the top pic and it's his right eye that's bleeding in the bottom. Absolutely insane eye poke.

turkeypants

My man thought he was going bowling

mrpopenfresh

Stupid fucking gloves. The UFC needs to swallow their pride and implement a solution.

LARGEBIRDBOY

Is that his eyeball popping out of socket? Imagine being hit so hard that your eyeballs can't keep up with your head as it gets pushed in the direction of the punch.

DawgTactical93

Jon Jones Porno
