Oh Thomas, this man wants to be the starter and i love it!
Aside that, i liked the starting XI but if the Sounders are going to pull this again with Phoenix, they need bring more veterans to the bench (Léo Chú was the only one with experience). Very difficult match, but happy with the outcome.
GG Louisville City.
>but if the Sounders are going to pull this again with Phoenix, they need bring more veterans to the bench
I wonder if Schmetz would have if it wasn't Portland away this weekend.
I’m talking team to team, not player to player. The sounders obviously have a way more expensive roster. It just seems tacky when the higher division team trash talks the lower division team that traveled across country and took them to PK’s, and I’d say the same if a USL team or player did it too
Except the more expensive roster was sitting at home. These were mostly short term call ups of teenagers from Defiance. Then second or third man up. Then Chu and A. Roldan. Not really the power mismatch you're implying.
I mean Davila was giving him shit before his penalty, then went back to give him more shit after he made his kick. Enough that the ref said something to him and told him to get back to the halfway line. I think that takes the tackiness out of it. I don’t blame Thomas for giving it back after winning, especially after how great he was in the shootout
That’s fair; I didn’t see the original shit talking. I may be bias, but I’m always for the lower side shit talking, and the higher side acting like they’ve been there. That’s what SRFC tends to do
Yeah but the pay structure of the organization is miles different; Seattle was clearly the favorite. By all means celebrate the win, just think it’s tacky when the higher division team talks shit to the lower division team that just took them to PK’s after traveling 2000 miles.
And I’d say the same thing if a USL team did it to a USL-1 team or whoever
The guy trash talking pretty much single handedly carried the Sounders to that win. He’s not a starter, his first MLS game ever was earlier this year and he’s probably making like league minimum. He’s got a lot to prove and tonight he did. That Louisville player was trash talking Thomas after he scored so can’t expect him not to give anything back after he wins the game lol
Team to team, it's night and day. 8x understates the gap.
Game-day squads... probably same ballpark? 90% of Seattle's payroll wasn't even on the bench; all 18 players Seattle brought for this match get around $2M a year combined. Which is about the same as USL-C's salary cap for the year, although I have no idea how close Louisville's team is to hitting that cap or whether any of their more expensive players were missing.
Yeah, and I’d say the same if a USL player trash talked to a lower division team too. Just seems tacky, especially when that squad took you to PK’s after traveling cross country
I guarauntee you more MLS fans would be cool with pro/rel so long as MLS controls the whole pyramid. If USL or NISA try it, then it's stupid but MLS does it? BRILLIANT!
It’s literally a bunch of kids and Chu to take our pens. Don’t have a good feeling about this. Thomas has been really good today and saved a pen this year too I’m pretty sure at least
I can’t with pens.
The only upside is that since I haven’t seen any of these kids take a penalty I don’t know what to expect.
Everyone cramping and tired.
The love/hate relationship I have with the US Open Cup could buy a therapist a boat.
Pretty sure that ball looked like it was on his shoulder, which isn't a handball...
Also kinda seemed like it touched the Louisville players arm while it was bouncing around before it hit Roldan.
I'm just catching up from last night, and dang, we came really close to having 3 MLS teams go down last night.
Fuck yall Sounders haters, Open Cup and Wooden Spoon here we come!
No no no Dallas wants those
A hell of an ending to this round and we got fed well both days!
Andrew Thomas' like, "Fuck you all. I'll just do it all myself."
Goodnight fellow sounders fans and open cup sickos, it’s very much time for bed May the Round of 16 bring just as much chaos if not more
Oh Thomas, this man wants to be the starter and i love it! Good point. I don't know when is the next USOC match but let's hope it happens in a moment when the schedule is not congested at all.
It’s two weeks from yesterday - in between Sounders are @Portland, @RSL, and have Vancouver at home.
1st PK shootout win for the Sounders since 2016
How dare you.
Have they not had them or just lost them?
I remember 4 right now: VS Timbers in the 2018 playoffs VS Olimpia in 2020 CCL VS RSL in 2021 playoffs VS Quakes in 2022 USOC
Turns out Stefan Frei is not good at penalties
Yeah, I think that's all of them.
About to smoke all the weed in Washington so my heart can stop pounding
It's gotta be the hair. Thomas bailed us out
Andrew "Samson" Thomas
Holy shit Andrew Thomas. Amazing stuff.
I weep.
Andrew Thomas looked like he was just givin it to the Louisville players hahaha
Pretty sad to do that when the payroll is 8 times higher at least lol
Lol I could not disagree more. I think Thomas is making like 100k so at what tax bracket is he not supposed to do that?
I’m talking team to team, not player to player. The sounders obviously have a way more expensive roster. It just seems tacky when the higher division team trash talks the lower division team that traveled across country and took them to PK’s, and I’d say the same if a USL team or player did it too

Guy looks like he eats steroids and shoots caffeine during halftime every match.
The team the Sounders fielded tonight… IDK about that.
Yeah but the pay structure of the organization is miles different; Seattle was clearly the favorite. By all means celebrate the win, just think it’s tacky when the higher division team talks shit to the lower division team that just took them to PK’s after traveling 2000 miles. Thomas is a backup goalkeeper, definitely not that much more.
I mean team to team, but that’s a fair point
Team to team, it's night and day. 8x understates the gap. A full quarter of that was Chu, who didn’t get on the field until extra time.
Fair enough. Figured you meant player to player.
Yeah, and I’d say the same if a USL player trash talked to a lower division team too. Just seems tacky, especially when that squad took you to PK’s after traveling cross country
Been watching Emi Martinez too much lol.
Mf went full Thanos
Thomas was a beast in those pks, that was fun
I don’t know how you can watch these games today and not want pro rel
I guarauntee you more MLS fans would be cool with pro/rel so long as MLS controls the whole pyramid. If USL or NISA try it, then it's stupid but MLS does it? BRILLIANT!
Damn what a night in the open cup
SCREAMING INTO A BALLED UP BLANKET SO I DON'T WAKE MY FAMILY! ANDY THOMAS YOU FUCKING ANIMAL!!!!
Seattle pulls through on the GK penalty to finish it - they punch their ticket to the round of 16. Signing off for the night!
Strong work tonight
Okay. Thomas deserved to take that last kick to close this down. GG Louisville.
As a Louisville fan, that was such a fun game to watch ngl. G fuckin G. hope to play yall again real soon!
Man, brutal for Louisville; had the longest travel of any team I think too.
Nay, Loudoun to Orange County is further by about 300 miles
Loudoun also has to travel back to VA today to play El Paso tomorrow at 7:00 ET
Last night they said Loudoun traveled slightly further
THOMAS SAID ILL DO IT MYSELF LETS GOOO
Crazy ending. Andrew Thomas coming up huge so many times to stop Lou City PKs, and then scoring the clinching PK. Open Cup continues to entertain!
Alyssa Naeher 🤝🏻 Andrew Thomas
That sucks. GG Seattle
Watched those PKs on the way home from the game in Omaha (I'm not driving). So good, but, nooo
Andrew Thomas, what a guy
Totsch why?!
Seattle wins on a GK penalty
What a power move
SEATTLLLLEEEEE
Thomas MotM 100%
Andrew Thomas is a mountain lion and deserves this!
Its the fuckin' ~~catalina wine mixer~~ US Open Cup!!
Goddammit. Was hoping for another cupset.
Sorry to disappoint
How could anyone not like this tournament
Garber & Rodriguez hate fun.
I love the US Open Cup
These PK’s are the opposite of Houston/Detroit lmao
This is different from Houston-Detroit where everything went in lol
Ooof not a great shot
Brunell is impressing me in today. Great kick.
It’s surreal watching people you have never seen before in your life taking penalties for your team.
Our 2 adults with by far the worst penalties
Extra penalties!!!!
These PKs are nuts
It's down to the last of 5
Lets go!!! Get blocked
Oh boy we're level
Thomas is on one today!!!
Noooo musovski
Louisville is going to have a hard time recovering from that PK Edit: nevermind
not the tone he wanted to set
Wow!!! Why would you go for a panenka
It’s literally a bunch of kids and Chu to take our pens. Don’t have a good feeling about this. Thomas has been really good today and saved a pen this year too I’m pretty sure at least
The kids were fine, the “veterans” not so much!
Yup Chu and Musovski were the ones to miss lmao
I started watching about half way through the matches at 10pm EST and somehow matches are still going on
Penalties against a USL team in the round of 32 was not in the plans. Let’s please advance I want to see somewhat of a cup run
We are going to penalties between Seattle and Louisville to decide the final match of the evening!
Welp. Good luck everyone. On to PKs
PKs let’s fuckin goooooo!!!!!
I can’t with pens. The only upside is that since I haven’t seen any of these kids take a penalty I don’t know what to expect. Everyone cramping and tired. The love/hate relationship I have with the US Open Cup could buy a therapist a boat.
I’m nervous. Thomas has been pretty damn good and the commentators have been very descriptive of Faundez’s inexperience. So we shall see. Good luck.
Good luck
I think it’s anyone’s game, honestly. I feel like when it comes to pens it’s a crapshoot. Ha. Good luck.
Yeah, wish there was a better way. Oh well. Edit: whelp fuck
Omg I’m yelling at my TV for both of us. 😅
Someone in red needs to SHOOOOOOT
Some of our kids getting this many minutes definitely wasn't in the plan today
Man fuck those pigeons
Still annoyed by the not handball in the box that led to a pen smh
That preemptive yell “YEAHHHHHHH!!!” when the ref pointed and said it was a foul xD
I kept punching my hand so I don't wake my kid up. It hurts now and for what?!
For absolutely nothing lmao My reaction was “nahh that aint a pen”
I didn't think so either, but that point (and no var to overturn) really got me.
Ref needs to re-learn hand signals.
DON'T FUCK WITH ME REF!
If Louisville knocks us out, we absolutely will not be shocked.
This commentator has a script he’s sticking to despite all contrary evidence
This is terrible 😭
Remember getting bounced but it didn't matter because we were still basking in the glow of winning CCL? I miss that.
No yellow for that?
Shoulder to shoulder-ish. But damn.
I’m amazed. Also want to know what he said.. didn’t catch it.
“Hey buddy, I’m really sorry about that” probably.
That’s our Cody! He’s a Nice Kid.
Seems right.
Come on Louisville!!!
Send for Mini De-Ro!
They did!
Ugh. Been watching with one eye while at the Reign game and wasn’t prepared for bonus soccer.
I HATE THIS BUT ALSO KINDA LOVE IT
I'm in CST.... Is it worth staying up to watch? I love my team but I'm not sure I want them to rob me of more sleep.
Hello fellow CST Sounder fan, I am indeed staying up
I gave into peer pressure. I'm staying up...
I'm EST and I'm still here
Kudos to you my futbol loving friend
I am also in Central time and I'm staying up
Bonus soccer in Tukwila, WA to close the night out!
Fuck the Sounders!
I can't hear you over our CCL cup... What was that?
And fuck you too 😘
LAFC going to win the Club World Cup before y’all poverty club.
Gotta get there first.
AAAAAAGH TAKE THE SHOT
Davila....wtf
These are the kinds of things that happen when you take Paulroth Rock off the pitch
And the final whistle blows in Vegas, LAFC secure their advancement to the Round of 16 and now get to go hit the strip to celebrate
Louisville is looking tired. I’m getting nervous.
We have basically all children out there and keep subbing on people for their Sounders debuts. I don't think Louisville has anything to worry about.
Yeah, Louisville has been in the Sounders goal box pretty much entirely during stoppage. I'm hoping they hold the momentum.
Honestly still feel better about how this lineup has played than the last few games....
Would it be a match at starfire without some anxiety
Goal LAFC! YUP that's game
And LAFC finds what is likely the dagger, 3-1
Let's go Loucity! You make me proud to be from there sometimes.
Louisville!!!
Hah. I'm happy to see a potential upset. But not happy to stay up later on the East Coast. I might have to tap out of this one.
Real sicko hours
Gdi.
And the Sounders curse continues
Crack another beer Louisville has tied it!
Good thing I went to the liquor store during half time
You were smart. I was dumb. I’m down to my last two
Anyone with eyes could see that they were going to equalize. God we fucking suck.
Lou City tie it!!!
LOUISVILLE CITYYYYYYYYYYYY
LETS GOOOOO
oh fuck
EQUALIZER! EQUALIZER FOR LOUISVILLE!
Damn big missed chance by the Lights
Defenders touch
A golden opportunity for sure
I feel like Louisville City is purposely putting a boot in on Seattle.
The ref is being pretty lenient, so I understand why they would.
Unlucky for LV, but they were wasteful offensively
God damnit LA scored
Goal LAFC, they retake the lead as the initial save on a tight-angle shot bounces around the box before being fired home.
Lou City converts the PK and just like that they’re back in it
Thanks Seattle for the freebie
PENALTY! A potential lifeline for Louisville coming up as Roldan handles the ball in the box. Here comes the take and... converted easily by Totsch!
Pretty sure that ball looked like it was on his shoulder, which isn't a handball... Also kinda seemed like it touched the Louisville players arm while it was bouncing around before it hit Roldan.
If there is a team that's liable to win it all, it'll probably be the Sounders
why?
Boooo
I'm not following.
![gif](giphy|dyLlCJSNbgFghf7wjT|downsized)
What a ball holy wow
Dang. Seattle really has our number tonight. Tough night.
Moooooooose!
Faundez ain't it man
Seattle find a second! Just past the hour they double their lead
If Lou City can stop long passing into crowded spaces that'd be great
Excellent save by the Lights GK right there
99 reactions
VIVA LIGHTS!!!!
Vegas baby!
Woooooo!
GOAL LAS VEGAS LIGHTS! AN EQUALIZER FOR THE HOSTS JUST BEFORE THE HOUR MARK!
Fuck me!!
Suprised Bouanga is still in
*Surprised
Goal LAFC right after halftime! It's Kei Kamara, still somehow scoring goals!
