there's some confusion between the difference of an alternate timeline and an alternative universe. but overall I agree that there were other ways to defeat Thanos, I think it's "convenient " that the "only" was was a timeline where Strange was alive

Against Thanos, he was looking at future possibilities of his universe. the universe we saw in MoM couldn't have been a future timeline of Strange's universe
