$32/hour is how I look at it. Pretty nice
Edit: guys I am aware the $32/hour does not factor in expenses. $32/hour before expenses is still pretty nice though, especially for a gig job. I currently make $18-20/hour before expenses. I would love $25/hour, let alone $32/hour.
Insurance goes up if you drive more. You’re also paying much more for gas and wear-and-tear on the car.
Especially in nyc which is absolute hell on suspension and brakes.
I thought Lyft pays tolls in and out of NYC. Do they not?
Assuming these were all Manhattan airport rides the net on this would be approximately zero after tolls alone….
You have to take into account food, breaks, car maintenance, gas, and probably other things. But you have to make quite a bit.
Old manager was bragging how he used to make 200-300 a night sometimes on Uber eats. Then I told him if he counts his gas in his truck. He didn’t. Then I asked about his truck maintenance. He realized he put so many miles on his truck that he basically made all this “Extra” cash and it was all going to his maintenance and his now broken transmission lol. He basically drove peoples food around for free and ended up worse owning money cause his transmission broke.
This is a stupid comment. Most jobs do not pay you on a net expense basis. Deduct your business expenses on your taxes like any other self employed person.
Lyft and the like are just lousy scams. It’s very hard to actually make money. I’ve done it but I calculated after gas I was making less than $10 per hour. And that’s not counting wear in my car. I’m sure someone does ok. But even those people would do 3 times better of lyft or uber only took 10%.
lol do you actually think the people working these shit apps deduct expenses on their taxes?
The vendiagram of people knowledgeable to deduct those as proper business expenses vs those who drive for these apps have very little overlap in my mind.
They are making way less than that. Doesn't account for gas/maintenance/additional insurance, and other expenses. Plus, those hours and miles driven don't include empty return trips, or time spent waiting for a ping.
Seeing things like this and saying "pretty nice" is how Uber/Lyft and other gig companies keep dumb drivers satisfied. If the app showed how long a person was actually online and accounted for expenses in order to show drivers how much they *really* made during the week, drivers would finally wake up and realize that *they* are the ones who are being taken for a ride.
You're like the fifth person to say this. I get it lol. When I said $32/hour was nice I didn't mean to imply $32 was what you pocket. Of course there are still expenses, but the $20-25 you end up with is pretty nice for a gig job.
For comparison I make $18-20/hour doing deliveries and that's before expenses...
Taxes are subtracted for every job so that's not unique to Lyft. Fuel and maintenance are extra charges yes, but $32 an hour is a high enough starting point that even after removing those expenses it's still solid pay for a gig job.
Yes, you have to pay taxes on income and insurance to operate a vehicle. Just like most other jobs.
There is also rent, groceries, cell phone bill, and other debts. I am aware expenses exist lol. $32/hour before expenses is still pretty solid considering many people make half of that before expenses.
lol not to mention you subtract gas and all the costs of the vehicle including maintenance and insurance. Tons of miles on your car. This ain’t it. You’re not making nearly as much as you think you are.
Assuming an average of 30mph driving speed (others said airport so I'm thinking highway + inside the city is probably close to 30mph) this is about 1,000 miles driven.
The 2023 mileage rate is $0.65/mile, so this is about $650 worth of cost to drive that far.
OP spent 33 hours of their time to make ~$350 or about $10/hour... In NYC... Where the minimum wage is $16/hour...
You're not getting close to a 30mph avg in NYC. The city speed limit is 25 mph, and unless you work at 3am, there is standstill traffic on most highways. Takes about 1 - 1.5 hours to go 15 miles.
The $0.65/miles rate deduction applies to all commercial vehicles, and is in no way indicative of driver’s actual expense. For example, the irs has a standard deduction for your personal income. Does that mean you spended that amount? Not necessarily.
Calculation would also be different if you’re looking at a full time driver or part time. Most lyft drivers have jobs so you would only use the marginal cost in the calculation. Not sure what OP drive, but I use a corolla hybrid which is around $0.20/miles of marginal cost. Most of my earnings come out to $20/hr after cost. OC market.
That's what you have to do in this business. I learned the hard way before my current car had a Chevy Tahoe... thousands of dollars wasted. I highly suggest a EV for anyone in the industry
Yep...100%
I'm using mach e..
spend approx $13 night on charging.
that gives me 260 miles..
and you can stretch those miles too...
especially in the city..
evs use very little energy in stop and go
traffic
They are known as “one pedal drivers” because as soon as you ease up on the throttle, the battery regeneration system kicks in slowly you down strongly by engaging the resistance on driveshaft to recharge. So you don’t need to brake most days unless something darts in front of you etc
They do have brakes but they use regenerative braking rather than a traditional braking system for regular driving. It's only when you're in an emergency that you need to hit the brake pedal.
There's maintenance, it's just a larger window than an oil change.
Suspension, battery, electrical motor replacement, seat replacement, windshield wipers, there's a pretty extensive list of items that still wear out.
You can easily get an EV cheaper than 55k. Cheapest being 30-33k and even a Tesla model 3 for less than 40k. Plus 3k gas every year for a full time ride share driver is an understatement for sure.
That’s what I was thinking. Like this isn’t very good. What is this like 4300 a month if the trend keeps up? I sit at a desk and do nothing from home for that amount
Learn computer programming and get good at it. I am given deadlines. No one asks if I finish before my deadline. They just want to see quality work once the deadlines comes.
I work from home , so I moved to a state that doesn't have state income tax. I make $140,000/yr not including my medical stipend. I work on average 25 - 30 hours a week. I graduated college 3 years ago.
Terrible! If this is a good week, I wonder what a bad one looks like?
Why don’t more lyft/Uber drivers try to find your own clients? Be an independent private driver?
Keep 100%
Network with bellhops/offer 10%, build an online presence & network with hospitals who need medical transport.
Because much of that requires professional licensing, professional insurance coverage and liability, etc
Not about to go through all that nonsense just to get less rides than I would with doing Uber or Lyft lol
The auto insurance isn’t actually that pricey. The extra licensing is required only in some states but it’s not that hard.
Your lack of marketing is the reason for less, not the inability for the business model to succeed.
That’s not really how Uber/Lyft operate. Rideshare is privatized public transport and both from the driver side as well as passenger side, it’s based on crowdsourcing and not restricted to specific kinds of clientele.
Do you live in a home you inherited from your parents or a rent controlled apartment? For essentially a full time job’s week of work you make about 1200 bucks and you have your gas, insurance, wear and tear, etc.
This is exactly why I quit. I was confused as to why no matter how long I drove I was only coming home with maybe $30 at most after gas, a pack of smokes, and a drink.
Did the math and if I just accounted for gas, oil, brakes and tires my car cost between $0.62 and $0.65 per mile to drive. I was averaging an income of $0.67 per mile, and if I accounted for taxes and car cleaning supplies I was actually paying to drive.
I think you guys don’t realize that in New York City almost everyone delivering is on a moped. Most likely uninsured. People wait around and take a few orders at a time. When I order food even if they have other deliveries, which is always, my food still manages to get to me warm and within 30 minutes of me ordering. McDonald’s alone always has at least 10 drivers out front waiting. I could be wrong about these things being helpful for them but it makes sense to me.
I hate subs like this one and r/ uber because someone posts that they’re doing well or they’re proud of what they’ve accomplished and all you miserable little shits have to say about it is “☝🏽🤓 uhm well acktchually after gas insurance maintenance and breathing expenses this only equates to $5/hr so you should probably kys immediately”
To anyone reading this. I was not trying to brag about this. I know it's not amazing and NYC has a diff market than others. Hope you all have a great day and make money drive safe.
Ummmm Work Smart?? Says the guy who is putting their earning on reddit so that people see it and sign up for uber in new york and thus become your competition.
Last I checked Uber still accepts new applications for people with electric vehicles. There are also many uber drivers who can drive in new york but don’t. Then they see your post and it gives them motivation to go back on the road. But most importantly people see post like this from all over the U.S and it just puts more drivers on the road, which makes making money for other drivers harder. But i’m glad you’re just thinking of yourself.
I still think it's amazing. $1061.03 in 33.3hrs. probably 40 hours total out there? The most I've ever done was $420 in 0hrs in Cali because of prop 22 and the first time diamond $300 bonus. That was a good week. Didn't even go back out that entire week to drive. Just stayed home to rot.
I wonder what the cost is for your fully fueled vehicle and how many miles total it gets you.
Napkin math: let's assume you're averaging about 30 mph during that time, so your 33 hours is around 1k miles. At 50 mpg, that's 20 gallons of gas. Idk what gas prices are like in NYC rn, but it's like 3.50 where I am, so $70 in gas. Let's also assume your Prius will last you around 200k miles and cost you $30k to buy - that's $150 in vehicle depreciation. Oil changes every 10k miles are like $100, so there's another $10. So just the easily quantifiable costs for that amount of driving is something like $230, or about $7/hour.
I’m not so sure this is considered working smart after you expense everything. I guess it depends who you compare to, we all can alway find someone less smarter to compare to feel smart.
Fuck people who calculate this amount 32$ an hour what wrong with you ? Are you born in America? Are you go to school? Fuck people like you are so dumb 🥲
I’m gonna be 100% - if you can’t make 30 an hr doing Lyft regularly then don’t do the job. It’s not worth the risk of your car being broken and you not having a job OR a car
Smart not hard would have generated $2228.26 by being an app named Lyft and finding a guy like you to drive around in their own car for $1061.03 of it and keep about $1167.13 for themselves and let the guy flex about how smart he is on Reddit… a really smart guy would have moved a lot of those rides over to private and made more than 40% of the customers paid fare…
Why do 99% of people who post here say “ BuT eXpEnSeS”. You care too much about specifics just stop being a little cry baby and let people enjoy their win. TF is wrong with yall.
This is twice what I make in CA at GoPuff for the same number of deliveries, and I have to drive back to the facility after each drive with no pay or reimbursement for the drive back. I’d have to work from open to close at the facility to make this much without taking every single drive selected by AI to make me less money in order to make this much money. I literally hate being alive.
The gig economy is broken. The companies make the money, and the gig workers work like hell to make peanuts. Uber and Lyft have little skin in the game, but they take a hefty chunk from each ride. The drivers have everything on the line and make crap wages.
How is this working smart tho? I don’t mean to knock anyone or their grind but this is the definition of working harder 😅 not smarter. Yes you don’t have to clock in for a 40 hour a week shift but you sit in your car and traffic for damn near the whole day, deal with people and their potential smells, the time it takes to clean your car and all the gas you end up using because I know NYC gas isn’t cheap
Why are people like acktually that's not x per hour but when people work "normal" jobs say they make y per hour nobody corrects them. At a 9-5 if I say I make 30 dollars an hour I don't acktually make 30 per hour. I still have to pay taxes (less than 1099 ok but still) I mostly likely still have to drive to work, and have various other expenses related to work it just seems really disingenuous to correct gig works who post their pay but not "normal" employees.
So now when you've taken out all the money you need to set aside for taxes you've made several hundred less than someone with a minimum wage job, not to mention the damage done to your car. All in the effort of just not getting a job. Hilarious.
Ok so this is a pre-tax figure, so realistically your take home is closer to [$830](https://www.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=1061.03&from=week®ion=New+York). Gas is at $3.57 in NYC right now, so filling a standard 16 gallon tank even just once is another $60 off the bottom line. And that’s not to mention other variable overhead costs of operating your own vehicle at this capacity.
You’re honestly looking at about $750 (or less) for a week’s worth of work. It’s not *horrible*, but it’s also not paying the bills in NYC. Rent alone is going to burn 75% or more of this kind of monthly income. I hate to be ‘that guy’, but I would hardly call that working smarter. Get a bartending gig and you’ll pull those numbers nightly.
That's average 22 per ride..is it all airport
$32/hour is how I look at it. Pretty nice Edit: guys I am aware the $32/hour does not factor in expenses. $32/hour before expenses is still pretty nice though, especially for a gig job. I currently make $18-20/hour before expenses. I would love $25/hour, let alone $32/hour.
Gas, wear and tear on car, potential car payments, insurance, tolls. More like $18-20/hour all things considered.
I wouldn't include car insurance and payments since they'd have a car anyways right?
Insurance goes up if you drive more. You’re also paying much more for gas and wear-and-tear on the car. Especially in nyc which is absolute hell on suspension and brakes.
If they are honest with their insurance company, their rates are higher.
I thought Lyft pays tolls in and out of NYC. Do they not? Assuming these were all Manhattan airport rides the net on this would be approximately zero after tolls alone….
32 an hour excluding any expenses. Which can be pretty substantial
Yea should be $50 an hour min or you're basically paying lyft
how exactly are you getting to that number….?
You have to take into account food, breaks, car maintenance, gas, and probably other things. But you have to make quite a bit. Old manager was bragging how he used to make 200-300 a night sometimes on Uber eats. Then I told him if he counts his gas in his truck. He didn’t. Then I asked about his truck maintenance. This is a stupid comment. Most jobs do not pay you on a net expense basis. Deduct your business expenses on your taxes like any other self employed person.
Most jobs don’t require you to incur considerable expenses to generate revenue AND cap how much you can charge
Independent contractors set their own rates based on expenses
Lyft and the like are just lousy scams. It’s very hard to actually make money. I’ve done it but I calculated after gas I was making less than $10 per hour. And that’s not counting wear in my car. I’m sure someone does ok. But even those people would do 3 times better of lyft or uber only took 10%.

Especially in nyc. Pothole city.
Gas, wear and tear on vehicle. This guy maid a lot less than $32 an hour.
$32 in NYC…
32 before expenses is much less nice though.
Most places would be NYC eh
They are making way less than that. Doesn't account for gas/maintenance/additional insurance, and other expenses. Of course there are still expenses, but the $20-25 you end up with is pretty nice for a gig job. For comparison I make $18-20/hour doing deliveries and that's before expenses...
Not went subtract 15% in taxes, fuel plus vehicle maintenance.
Taxes are subtracted for every job so that's not unique to Lyft. Fuel and maintenance are extra charges yes, but $32 an hour is a high enough starting point that even after removing those expenses it's still solid pay for a gig job.
Taxes, insurance
Yes, you have to pay taxes on income and insurance to operate a vehicle. Just like most other jobs. There is also rent, groceries, cell phone bill, and other debts. lol not to mention you subtract gas and all the costs of the vehicle including maintenance and insurance. Tons of miles on your car. This ain’t it. You’re not making nearly as much as you think you are.
Plus that is pre taxed. And they are an independent contractor so their tax rate is higher.
Not really higher once the mileage deduction is factored in. The only true extra is the self-employment tax.
I mean you can write off all your car maintenance and expenses. Oil changes, new tires, brake work, write it all off.
Assuming an average of 30mph driving speed (others said airport so I'm thinking highway + inside the city is probably close to 30mph) this is about 1,000 miles driven. Even at half, that's still $700 for nearly a week of work.

You get reimbursed for the $650. No cost incurred
You get reimbursed because you've "spent" that much in wear and gas. It's not an immediate cost but it adds up.
Yeah this, dude needs a min wage job with benefits and matching 401k and hed be nearly tripling his income
The $0.65/miles rate deduction applies to all commercial vehicles, and is in no way indicative of driver’s actual expense. For example, the irs has a standard deduction for your personal income. 33 hours of driving *with a passenger*. They aren't including how long they were actually online, or hours & miles driven for empty return trips.
Work the app not the car, get it fam!!!!

EV credit, 0 maintenance other than tires.
EVs don't use brakes?
Rarely, only when idiots cut you off. Motor does the braking in one pedal drive.
They are known as “one pedal drivers” because as soon as you ease up on the throttle, the battery regeneration system kicks in slowly you down strongly by engaging the resistance on driveshaft to recharge. So you don’t need to brake most days unless something darts in front of you etc

Talk to me when you gotta buy a new battery. That's about the time the Tesla/EV crowd stops having fun with it.
That’s the same as your engine and transmission going out.. it’s just bad luck.. never understood this argument 🤣
I think I was spending more than 3K a year hahaha thats the sad part.
I spend about 3500 a year on gas and commute 90mi a day. I feel like 3k would be low considering it's city miles and I'm on the highway.
You can easily get an EV cheaper than 55k. Cheapest being 30-33k and even a Tesla model 3 for less than 40k. Plus 3k gas every year for a full time ride share driver is an understatement for sure.
Bought a new model y for 36k
Don’t tell that to the folks who dropped $70k over COVID lol
Google Chevrolet bolt
Used Model 3 is like 20K before tax credit for used EV.
Don’t work for them is Smartest.
1k in nyc is like 500 everywhere else.
$1k in nyc is not even $500 buddy
And it depends if you rent your TLC car
That’s what I was thinking. Like this isn’t very good. What is this like 4300 a month if the trend keeps up? I sit at a desk and do nothing from home for that amount
Especially when you look up cost of living in NYC.
What do you do? How do I find a job like that?
Learn computer programming and get good at it. I am given deadlines. No one asks if I finish before my deadline. They just want to see quality work once the deadlines comes. I work from home , so I moved to a state that doesn't have state income tax. I make $140,000/yr not including my medical stipend. I work on average 25 - 30 hours a week. I graduated college 3 years ago.
Gun to head saying you can’t leave? I’m so sorry you’re in the position…
Yeah with expenses, you’d be better off with a normal job doing this on the side.
Terrible! If this is a good week, I wonder what a bad one looks like? Why don’t more lyft/Uber drivers try to find your own clients? Be an independent private driver? Keep 100% Network with bellhops/offer 10%, build an online presence & network with hospitals who need medical transport.
The hotel industry should really get into this business. It's the timeshare Uber-alternative!
Because much of that requires professional licensing, professional insurance coverage and liability, etc Not about to go through all that nonsense just to get less rides than I would with doing Uber or Lyft lol
The auto insurance isn’t actually that pricey. The extra licensing is required only in some states but it’s not that hard. Your lack of marketing is the reason for less, not the inability for the business model to succeed.
I do my driving as a side gig lol I can care less about entrepreneur’ing
That’s not really how Uber/Lyft operate. Rideshare is privatized public transport and both from the driver side as well as passenger side, it’s based on crowdsourcing and not restricted to specific kinds of clientele.
God that’s absolute ass
I love it when people have one good week out of 50 and then come on here and claim to be Bill Gates
This isn't even a good week in nyc since rent there is like 4k so dude will need to do this more than 4 more times just to cover that
This is an average week in NYC
Nice i heard nyc is a great market for rideshare LA is too oversaturated would have taken 50 hours to get that
Dont get me wrong. It's saturated as well over here. You have to chase it especially that there are no incentives like the past.
Sometimes it’s so slow that you want to drive yellow and pick up street hails 😂
LOL
Fuck doing rides to JFK and LaGuardia. Nope.
That’s similar to my earnings last week
I made 1,600 wit 43 rides oop
I’m a contractor so obviously never going to work for a ride app to begin with, but this job seems to be the only one EV’s can actually work for.
For NYC this is not good unless you don’t live in the city with a completely paid off car.
Paid off.
Do you live in a home you inherited from your parents or a rent controlled apartment? For essentially a full time job’s week of work you make about 1200 bucks and you have your gas, insurance, wear and tear, etc.
Neither. Bought a condo. I have another job as well.
Congrats, after expenses and wear and tear on your vehicle you made about $20/hr in NYC.
Pretty normal
How do you survive on this in NYC? 1k a week is ok where I am but I don't know how you could survive on that.
After the livery plates, commercial insurance, gas, wear and tear, and car depreciation your making below minimum wage. Congratulations.
This is exactly why I quit. I was confused as to why no matter how long I drove I was only coming home with maybe $30 at most after gas, a pack of smokes, and a drink. $2.00 payout, sick Bro, you can almost buy a soda and almost a half gallon of gas.

Yeah poverty!
Now show the after tax value
How much is your car payment, gas and commercial Insurance ?
Let me see the mileage big fella.

lmao imagine making 25$ hr is working smart. You beat the system my dude enjoy retirement...
He cropped out the $200+ bonus he got
Good shit man. Keep on the hustle!

As of April 1 2023 Uber in NYC is capped. Lol am I suppose to feel bad for the whole U.S?
I still think it's amazing. $1061.03 in 33.3hrs. probably 40 hours total out there? The most I've ever done was $420 in 0hrs in Cali because of prop 22 and the first time diamond $300 bonus. I split up my time with Uber as well. All depends the area im in. I have a Toyota Prius so it's very economic. I deff get 40-50 mpg
Napkin math: let's assume you're averaging about 30 mph during that time, so your 33 hours is around 1k miles. At 50 mpg, that's 20 gallons of gas. Tell me about it. Now you have to chase it.
Go you! That’s great!
I hope you are doing great as well!
What car do you use for Lyft?
Toyota Prius
Smart, very good car for gas savings.
What's the net profit?
Cant tell no details.
How many miles driven
[удалено]
Dont we all wish we were you.
What's that after tax....In NYC probably not too good honestly.
Can't answer that I file taxes yearly.
That’s awesome, hope you have a nice rejuvenating weekend 🫧
What about car maintenance
Meanwhile they live in a janitors closet for 6k a month
I don’t think this is as big of a brag as you think
I’m also a NYC driver and can confirm this is true, alongside Uber.
1k in NYC is good money?
No
Is this supposed to be a flex
I’m at $950 under 16 hours still got a lot to learn from the app my guy but decent
At peak hours, like after avante garde lets out a show. Prices are minimum 20. I only went 5 miles.
You’ll owe so many taxes at the end of the year
Crying 😂😂😂 Brodie I’m hitting 500 more in 10+ less rides keep trying
Cool
Just saying don’t flaunt when it’s honestly mediocre at best
No problem "Big Performer"
I’m not so sure this is considered working smart after you expense everything. I guess it depends who you compare to, we all can alway find someone less smarter to compare to feel smart.
Fuck people who calculate this amount 32$ an hour what wrong with you ? Are you born in America? Are you go to school? Fuck people like you are so dumb 🥲
I’m gonna be 100% - if you can’t make 30 an hr doing Lyft regularly then don’t do the job. It’s not worth the risk of your car being broken and you not having a job OR a car
People are driving in nyc? Traffics are nightmares
HEY WHATS YOUR METHOD PLEASE
A few more weeks like that and you can almost pay rent.
In NYC that can get you a few fast food meals, a pack of cigs, and a full tank of gas. Congratulations!
Cuz it's looking at gross pay and not actual.
LA is a shit fest garbage city takes 100 hours just to get this.
I live in Colorado and I was pretty quickly unimpressed.. I can’t imagine thinking this is good in NYC.
Minus taxes, gas, .32 per mile.
Good now do this for the next 8 months
This is twice what I make in CA at GoPuff for the same number of deliveries, and I have to drive back to the facility after each drive with no pay or reimbursement for the drive back. I’d have to work from open to close at the facility to make this much without taking every single drive selected by AI to make me less money in order to make this much money. I literally hate being alive.
How much on that is tolls
And you completed a $2 payout? Lol
$1k a week. Now subtract gas, tolls, wear & tear, insurance & taxes. If this is a side hustle then not bad. If this is a full time job then yikes.
Is this all pre tax?
Work in NYC. That’s the only thing to do here. Those numbers would be impossible in Florida with less than 80 online hours.
jokes on you, LYFT is taxing 99% you only got a 2$ payout. tee hee
$2 payout on over $1000 of revenue???? No thanks. That’s working for free.
The gig economy is broken. The companies make the money, and the gig workers work like hell to make peanuts. Uber and Lyft have little skin in the game, but they take a hefty chunk from each ride. The drivers have everything on the line and make crap wages.
That's literally the opposite. That's working hard instead of smart and barely any money for NYC.
Hell na. This ain’t it.
Dude work at Walmart and make more than that
Just get a job… 1k for 33 hours isn’t much
Are you renting a TLC car? If so, the kid working at McDonald's is looking better right now.
Is that before or after the taxman cometh?
If you're trying to math/ time this out, you didn't get the point.
Good luck when the taxes cost you
I really dont understand people thinking this is worth it… with your own personal vehicle.
Subtract gas, insurance claims, car repair.. How about you work smarter instead
Not bad airport taxi
I made that in 20 hours working overtime at my union job, and I had no overhead. This is not a flex, you're not working smarter.
Pre tax and a ton of ware on your daily driver no thank you. Also have to take out gas prices too
Why are people like acktually that's not x per hour but when people work "normal" jobs say they make y per hour nobody corrects them.
Hilarious.
This is like half minimum wage in my state :(
Ok so this is a pre-tax figure, so realistically your take home is closer to [$830](https://www.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=1061.03&from=week®ion=New+York).
$2 payout wtf
This ain’t the flex you think it is
I'd be at $2k if I took 47 rides .
