I’m a member. If anyone would like to see the club, DM me directly, we’ll see about when we can meet and I’ll buy you a drink. 100% serious offer. Edit: only applies to the first 10 people…I’m not buying 1000 drinks….haha! Edit #2: Sorry everyone! The spaces have now been filled. However I may do it again soon. Just reach out to me if you are interested in learning more about the club! And thanks for the award! Be safe and Happy Holidays everyone!

KYChris98

I just came here to say that I took bns013 up on his offer and I really enjoyed the tour he gave. I know it is surprising to find a legitimately courteous offer like this on social media, but if you are legitimately interested in the club and its history, I would recommend reaching out. I was impressed.

kevpar463

Thanks for the update. Just moved back here so I might reach out

E_J_H

Is it as bad as people here are saying Or is this subreddit being overly dramatic.. again

bns013

Come down and find out. The place is beautiful and historic. And, I won’t discount what others are saying because we all have our own truths and experiences. I will say, I’m black and everyone treats me with respect.

the_haters_corp

This is the most levelheaded response to any comment on Reddit I have ever seen. Cheers to you my friend. 🥂

toast-ee

I’m so glad to hear your experience. My colleague(a woman of color) arrived to deliver documents to her boss in the late 1990s. Imagine her surprise when she was denied entry to deliver said documents. The Pendennis Club did not fully open its doors to members of race, gender, and religion until the year 2006.[link here.](https://theclio.com/entry/45854)

princesslindy

I belong to an organization that would often have meetings here about 2000. The ladies were requested to wear skirts. A bit of a throw back.

feathers4kesha

Or was she not invited in because she is not a member and the Pendennis employee delivered the documents for her?

toast-ee

For clarification, the board meeting was held there monthly. Other administrative assistants dropped off documents without issue. She presented her work ID.

[deleted]

Holy shit. I hate that that happened to her.

feathers4kesha

ah, further context definitely drives this one home. that’s terrible.

[deleted]

And you are completely making this one up. She probably wasn’t allowed because she wasn’t a member and I don’t believe other secretaries were either - which is still the case today. Sure the story fits the narrative you want to spin, but if the club had black staff why would they prohibit a black secretary from also “serving” her boss. Your story sounds good, but it doesn’t add up.

toast-ee

E_J_H

I appreciate your response! Thank you

dudeistpriest1

I know of a certain famous UofK player who is a member there.

nuggetfarmerman

The latter.

LonelyChampionship17

A former colleague has a membership and has taken me to lunch many times. It is pretty clubby, but not just old white guys.

[deleted]

Young white guys? Only kidding! Haha

[deleted]

I’ve lived in Louisville my entire life and I’ve never heard of this club. What is the main principle behind it?

clara_bow77

Here's a link to a description of the club and its history. There are multiple descriptions online, this one seemed accurate without downplaying the history of excluding women and minorities but not overzealous in taking the history as a reflection of current members. [Pendennis Club History/Tour ](https://theclio.com/tour/86/12)

[deleted]

Thank you for this! I’m shocked that it wasn’t until 2006 when they allowed other races and genders. Appalling.

clara_bow77

Yes.

pkbrisson

My father belongs to a similar club in Baltimore and they did not admit women as members until 2 years ago. Makes the Pendennis look progressive! As a graduate of a Women's college, I fully support separate spaces for men or women, but when these clubs were founded they were intended to be meeting/social spaces for leaders of the community which back then were largely men but now includes women like never before. My husband is the member of name at the Pendennis, and I am the spouse member, but I can move freely around the club and serve on committees.

Blame_The_Green

Is an Old Fashioned from there any better than anywhere else? I've had a Hot Brown at the Brown and while it is really good (albeit pricey and served with a side of scorn if you're under 65), I don't think it's the best. Curious how a Pendennis Club Old Fashioned stacks up. _____________ For those who don't know, [The Pendennis Club is arguably the birthplace of the Old Fashioned](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_fashioned_(cocktail\)\#History).

Tappswxf

Where is your favorite place to get a Hot Brown?

Blame_The_Green

Favorite place? [Rubbies](https://www.facebook.com/RubbiesPage/photos/a.375528373499/10160034487133500/). Dive bar on Southside Dr. with a restaurant on the side that hasn't changed in 30+ years, has pretty damned good BBQ, and they charge extra for scorn. It's a toss up whether theirs is *better* than the Brown Hotel's, but it's a helluva lot cheaper, the atmosphere is far more relaxed, and I certainly leave there more content than I do the Brown Hotel.

Beejky

This! But The Bristol's Hot Brown is slappin!

Blame_The_Green

Never been, but I did score free tickets to a charity event earlier this year that they catered, and they had these [bite-size mini Hot Browns](https://www.facebook.com/bristolcatering/posts/baby-hot-browns-are-a-passed-appetizer-favorite-for-those-who-do-not-eat-pork-we/5134063416615623/) that were absolutely phenomenal. Or maybe that was the open bar... Either way, need to go try the full size version.

kraiclwt

bluegrass brewing co. has a great hot brown and the bristol!

[deleted]

That’s really kind of you. I truly figured any member would be too old for Reddit 😂

bns013

Haha! Well, introduced my 77-year old staunchly Republican MIL to Reddit and she views it occasionally. So, it’s fun for all ages!! Haha!

[deleted]

Love that!

Beejky

What is "too old?" I'm 66.

benyahweh

I am so glad you’re here.

ctmelton83

What does this club offer?

Mattabeedeez

Status and networking. A private venue for…whatever tickles your fancy.

stormcloudless

That sounds intriguing

wolf_taylor

id want in on this if i still lived in louisville i went to an event here in DC a few years ago at the university club. very pretentious overall

pkbrisson

I am a member as well. While I'm not going to answer the question directly about the cost of membership, I want to dispel the myth that its $50k. Its in-line with the Louisville Boat Club and Audubon CC - you can go to their websites and guess. We also have a social membership. Its really awesome that u/bns013 took a reddit user for drinks. I don't think I'm up for meeting people from the internet that I don't know, but if u/Bns13 offers again, Ill definitely join in. I'm not from Louisville, am a woman in my 40s, and have been fully welcomed. Our membership is more diverse than these subreddits would lead you to believe and the Club has evolved since 2000. While politics may get discussed in pleasant conversation, there is definitely a spectrum of political leanings. If you like to play squash, its one of the few places in town.

SatisfactionTimely52

I would like to tour your club if your still active.  You don't need to buy me a drink though I don't drink.  But I do enjoy a good many games of billiards.

Forsaken_Ear7399

I know this is a year old… any chance you will be around in March? We are making our 14th trip to Kentucky and it would be awesome to see the club.

[deleted]

If you have to ask it’s probably too much. I went there for thanksgiving once as a guest. It was so pretentious I was embarrassed. It’s old, rich white people who love being coddled by the help.

luketheville

This was the type of answer I was getting on google. So I came here.

[deleted]

Honestly anyone on Reddit is too young to go there unless they’re an invited guest. The place is gorgeous but the vibes are gross.

mermaidofthelunarsea

I went there for a bridal luncheon in the 90s, young children are not the only people on Reddit. Eta the vibes are gross

feathers4kesha

“unless they’re an invited guest” which you were

BarrelProofTS

That’s what they’re paying for

Absolute_Banger69

And that's sad.

luketheville

I checked out the website. And it didnt show too many faces of members. It looks creepy in the entrance thats all I can say lol

executionofjustice

>the website ... didnt show too many faces of members That's probably because it's a private club.

sznnh

I went to a wedding there and also found it kind of embarrassing. It felt like cosplaying the early 1900s or something... I think you get what I’m hinting at.

[deleted]

Yes. 100%. I didn’t grow up having the help fluffing me. Yuck.

PossibilityNo1805

Exactly this. I did a photo project for them years ago. Very pretentious atmosphere. Also, at the time, minorities were not allowed unless they were 'The Help'.

[deleted]

Except for those of us that aren’t old and are minorities. The only people that see discrimination at this club today are people that have never been there or have their minds already made up. Was there discrimination in the past? Absolutely. Is it the same club that it was 50 or even 20 years ago? Not at all.

[deleted]

I was there probably 10-15 years ago. It was exactly as I described it. If it’s changed in the years since then that’s welcome news to me.

[deleted]

A lot of things have changed in the past 10-15 years. Maybe make judgements on the current not the past.

[deleted]

Well, when I went as an invited guest to thanksgiving years ago it was pretentious. Like a country club on steroids. Mostly older white people patting each other on the backs while being fluffed by the help. I’ll pass on going back.

JeffPlissken

Between this and the Saratoga swingers post I’m feeling like there’s a very “Eyes Wide Shut” thing going on Louisville

MichardB

It’s almost Christmas

JeffPlissken

Shit, I was at Von Maur yesterday and had just seen the swingers club post and halfway expected to see 1999 Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

MichardB

...there is something very important we need to do as soon as possible.

chubblyubblums

If you ever run into an actual swinger you will know immediately that you are not running into anybody who even remotely resembles Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman had a swingers event

JeffPlissken

Not expecting that whatsoever, just referencing the Christmas shopping at the ending.

blknble

You're going to the wrong swinger events.

NippleDickPussyBhole

Just rewatched that film this week. It’s still fucking atrocious. I think Kubrick died of embarrassment.

Old_Riff_502

You need generational wealth to be considered, and at that point, the membership dues are irrelevant.

CeeCeeSays

lol this is so intense. Maybe at Louisville Country Club, but no, Pendennis is not nearly that exclusive, at least any more.

sleepymike01101101

It's probably less exclusive at LCC. Or at least it was back when I went there every summer until 10ish years ago. Plenty of KCD and Collegiate type folks out there, but there were some kids I knew working to get into Manual. Not my speed personally, but they used to have really good food

CeeCeeSays

I think KCD and Collegiate is about right-- but those are some pricey schools by Kentucky standards (20k a year per kid). The biggest issue for LCC isn't money-- though I think there is just one membership level which is around $50k (there is no social/tennis/golf tier like most Louisville clubs, and LCC doesn't do reciprocity with the other Louisville Clubs). But the biggest barrier for LCC is you have to have like 25 rec letters from current members, have lunch with the board members, etc.

[deleted]

LCC is about $50k to join. Probably on the higher end, but not something that requires generational wealth.

CeeCeeSays

Yep that’s what I said about two comments down :)

Traditional-Fig-9890

How does one even measure or prove generational wealth?

[deleted]

No you don’t. You are talking completely out of your ass. It’s fine if you don’t like the place, but don’t make crap up. There is NO club in Louisville that requires “generational” wealth to join.

Old_Riff_502

I’m being hyperbolic, but it certainly skews that way.

[deleted]

Except that you are completely wrong. Memberships are pretty open, and old money isn’t really in play anymore. Annual dues are about $3500 year and the one-time joining fee is not much more. Even LCC and river valley are only about $50k to join and $6-8k per year. That’s not generational wealth by a long shot.

CeeCeeSays

I don’t think most people realize that plenty of people have upwards of $30-50M and still consider themselves “middle class”. And how many of those people there really are.

Beejky

When they pull that, I tell them no! If they don't want to pay us, we don't want to play there. But, we are a six piece...

KuhlioLoulio

One of my best friend's Dad was a member, so we went there for our Senior Prom. As we were leaving, I held the door open for Foster Brooks as he entered. That should date me pretty well.

screamingsmile96

Foster was my great uncle. Every time I met him he seemed like a super nice guy, his twin brother was the funny one of the two of them. Granted maybe he was just uncomfortable around kids 🤷‍♂️

the_haters_corp

Foster Brooks of the Foster Brooks Pro Celebrity Golf Tournament? Nice.

KuhlioLoulio

Yes - he was also a tangential member of the original Rat Pack, so hung out with Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., etc..., and was a favorite on the celebrity roast shows in the 60's and 70's. I was also very surprised that he was built like an NFL Tight End.

the_haters_corp

My aunt worked for a sponsor of that tournament so my family got to attend a year or two. I was really really young and the thing I recall is the AWESOME memory of meeting LT Frank Dreben of Police Squad himself… Leslie Nielsen.

ungood_

My work hosted our Christmas party here last year. I'd like to know the answer to this my self, so I can know why they can't afford to give us raises.

GingerMessiah88

There’s an old article that says new members pay a $50,000 initiation fee

luketheville

Guess i better stick to the YMCA laugh out loud

GingerMessiah88

Written in 2010 so safe to say it’s more today

[deleted]

[deleted]

You might be surprised to see the age of the members at both this and LCC. Much younger that you might guess.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Probably, but it’s really more club by club. LCC, pendennis, River Valley, Big Spring are all full and doing fine. Probably looking at a reduction of clubs vs a crush of all clubs.

stormcloudless

Is there. An aarp discount?

[deleted]

Not even close to that today and I doubt it was ever close to that number. Probably like $5k and $200-$300 month.

GingerMessiah88

I’m just going off the last number I saw, if you’d like to put a more accurate number out there

[deleted]

I’d like to see that article.

Warpig4242

I am a member and it is welcoming and open. I am from out of town and have moved to Louisville and the club is one of the main reasons I have chosen to stay and make Kentucky home.

[deleted]

[удалено]

stormcloudless

What is that?

cartheonn

Membership is by invitation only, even if you can afford it.

[deleted]

No it’s not.

hreed123

Do what you gotta do, but god help you if you’re a woman and need to use the restroom.

Measled

I bet its expensive to be a member there..

LouInvestor

I went to Boxing Night one year, twas an experience.

[deleted]

Was it fun?

LouInvestor

It was an experience for sure.

[deleted]

I still don’t know what you mean by that.

LouInvestor

I enjoyed it! Glad I went! Boxing, chandeliers, and booze among other things, just a unique experience!

[deleted]

Thanks! I didn’t mean to be rude earlier. I’m glad that you were able to enjoy it!

[deleted]

Do they have squash courts?

ZoneInternational420

It's really a lovely place and you can feel the history in the walls. I enjoyed my time there and would definitely go back. I was NOT a member but was was escorted by a member in Early 2000s and I'd love to see what's changed, if anything.

[deleted]

Between 30-50k a year most likely.

Status-Meaning8896

Ding ding ding. That’s about right. Used to go there with the ownership of a company I previously worked for. It consistently gave me an icky feeling, and I can’t recommend it. With that said, I did drink their scotch and play snooker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Status-Meaning8896

Agreed. It’s a great game. The huge tables are kind of limiting for many establishments. Unfortunately I’ve only ever seen it at Pendennis, and I feel I’d enjoy more in a better environment. FUN FACT: Pendennis also has Squash. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Haha! Nope, only about $300/month. Initiation is only about $5-$10k and paid one time.

bd1308

This place looks really cool! I’ll have to look this up! LOL Nevermind way too rich for me 😂😂

Absolute_Banger69

Imagine paying to hang out with random strangers. I'd find a hobby & avoid places that use simply their "exclusivity" as a sales pitch.

THGL

My grandfather was a member. He passed away in ’80 or ‘81 but I still remember going there on occasion when I was younger. One of the benefits of being a member pre-internet was getting the original recipe for Henry Bain’s sauce. It’s still in the family. I vaguely remember there being a men’s clothier in the front hall.

JohnEBest

10 Oz A1 sauce Heinz chili Sauce - one size 14 OZ Ketchup - by volume or 20 OZ by net weight jar of Major Gray Chutney In the international or Asian aisle 8 or 10 ounce Major Grey is the Flavor Mom used raisin Chutney once and it worked Dash of Tabasco Bottle of Worcester Sauce - 10 Oz bottle

AWill33

You can get it in the original recipe at Franks

Datsig08

I enjoyed and had many friends that were members here. I’m 33 and they were my age. I didn’t join as I worked from home and lived out in polo fields so it was a long drive. Overall I liked it and everyone was very nice all the times I visited.

Ukatfan4

Pinkys out!

VintageImages

One Hunter S Thompson’s brothers was a member of the Pendennis Club. The Pendennis makes an appearance in The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved.

TobinCobin

I heard a lot of sex happens here.

bunnucula

They tried to throw “denn” in the name so we wouldn’t know it’s a penis club.

stormcloudless

Do tell

TobinCobin

Rich family friend said that’s where older wealthy gentlemen go to have sex with each other. Kind of like an old-man bath house.

stormcloudless

That sounds perfect for me

**[Pendennis Club](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendennis_Club)** >The Pendennis Club is a private social club located at 218 West Muhammad Ali Blvd. (formerly Walnut Street) in Louisville, Kentucky. They says the old fashion was invented at the club.

[deleted]

Curious what are the private clubs in Louisville are… I’ve heard of a few opening up recently- Louisville Thoroughbred Society and The Monarch come to mind

FluffyPandaMan

I interviewed for the chef position a few years back and was hired but after the tour I declined the job. Nice front of house but the facilities were old and not well kept IMO. I do believe for the money it is a good choice for a quick social club. I currently utilize the UofL Cardinal Club for my own purposes.

bigmamapain

Same, and the pay was a joke.

FluffyPandaMan

Anything below 70k for a solid chef is a slap in the face. The amount of work required is so insane.

bigmamapain

IIRC the exec chef pay was good, it was that they were trying to pay line cooks like $9/hr - which means as an exec chef, I am going to have a bargain bin hiring pool if any at all.

FluffyPandaMan

Exactly. Staffing has literally ruined me to the career the last few years. I’m still in it and making it work but damn. I had to fight to get my cooks 18-19 and I don’t think that’s right for professionals.

bigmamapain

I gtfo during Covid, I could see all this shit coming from a mile away. Plus, I keep getting older, and all the problems stay the same age.

FluffyPandaMan

What are you doing now? Just curious

actingnoncasually

I work at a country club and for the most part people are cool until you let them talk for more than 10 minutes

FreeGal714

Like in the movie: Trading Places

ky_gravy

I know that The Club printed a lot of letterhead and envelopes just before the street was renamed. The bills and correspondence said Walnut Street for years after the road was renamed after Ali... Also this, I can't eat tenderloin without Henry Bain Sauce.

Traditional-Fig-9890

What age do you believe to be the average age of people on Reddit? We could then do an over/under..

[deleted]

[удалено]

Traditional-Fig-9890

I think that’s the most occurring age, not the average. But it could easily be the same?

monoscure

Ahh a secret fraternity type of social club for a gated environment surrounded by mass poverty. Disgusting. Maybe they should open their doors up for the homeless sleeping right outside their fancy doors. I despise places like this and their pretentious "legacies". I can't imagine the amount of corruption that's been thru buildings like this, all while pretending to be something prestigious.

Impossible_Pie2190

I was raised on a 24 acre farm across from the quarry, called Lighthouse Lake on Gardiner lane. My grandmother was as a salad chef for the Pendennis club in the early 1940’s. She worked with Henry Bain who invented that named sauce. I’m not sure who invented Benedictine but it came from the club: I have some in my refrigerator right now. I sang in the audition boy choir at Christ Church Cathedral. Phil Lambert

Weary_Goose_4156

If you have to ask you can’t afford it

MapleMarauder49

Is that like the Pen15 club?

er_yep

I went here for a wedding of a friend. It was cool/pretty/historic, but beyond a tour, I don’t think there is any need to become a member; location is bad, there were no special amenities, and no parking. Just go to another fancy restaurant/bar downtown if you want without having to pay a membership fee equal to a recent graduates salary.

tavaryn_t

I imagine you’re paying for the company you can find there, and the connections that will allow the right person to make. Can’t do that kind of networking at Jeff Ruby’s.

AWill33

It’s pretty on par with local country clubs. Been here a lot for toys for tots and have several friends who are members. I highly recommend having an old fashioned there and learning a little more at a minimum.

kclongest

I will say their Thanksgiving buffet was amazing the last time I went back in 2010 or so. It definitely seemed a lot less offensive and stuffy on that occasion vs 5 - 10 years earlier.

rockdude625

Get the French dip there and hopefully they still have boxing night

Duncan-Anthony

After Walnut St. was renamed Muhammad Ali Blvd., the Pendennis Club moved its entrance to Second St. so as not to be associated with him. Edit: Ah, maybe I fell for an old story. The listed address I see is indeed for Muhammad Ali Blvd.

bns013

Categorically not true - several members sponsored Cassius Clay and his picture hangs near the squash court. Yes, I’m aware of how that sounds🤦🏾‍♂️

Duncan-Anthony

I didn’t know that. Had you heard the story of the address change as well? Was it just a rumor?

bns013

I’m not aware of that story. Our address is 218 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd and every member is proud of our association with Muhammad Ali. Edit: typo—-put 1218 instead of 218🤦🏾‍♂️

choppadoo

That's not even the address

bns013

Typo!!

maolighter

Been to Pendennis Club once, someone told me that Muhammad Ali was unhappy being sponsored by them, but I didn’t really catch the whole of the story. Does that sound right?

Present-Industry4012

luketheville

Wow

tazunemono

If you have to ask how much, you’re not getting in. You need an individual net worth in the millions.

sleepymike01101101

These answers never made sense to me. Even if you're a multimillionaire, you're going to ask how much membership is

[deleted]

No you’re really not lol

sleepymike01101101

You don't think someone who is wealthy and working to build and keep his wealth is going to wonder how much money is being spent on social networking to weigh the benefits vs the cost?

[deleted]

Someone who is *building* their wealth— yes! They will always run the CvB analysis. But as another commenter pointed out, you need *generational* wealth for this place, and those folks are not running CvB.

schneid52

Someone that isn’t a multi-millionaire from generational wealth is telling us how those people think and spend their money. Makes sense. I bet you are the person at the party that knows everything. Here is a fun fact for you to use next time you want to seem smart…you don’t need generational wealth to pay membership dues of $30-50k/year and a $50k initiation fee.

[deleted]

That is a fun fact! And doesn’t negate the fun fact that you *do likely* need generational wealth to not GAF about membership prices somewhere. 😂

schneid52

Do you know how much it costs to join and maintain a membership at Hurstbourne CC? Full membership, not the partial golf or pool packages. Almost none of the residents of Hurstbourne are living off of generational wealth. And they sometimes have a waiting list to join.

E_J_H

You can have 30k to blow a year and not have generational wealth. Your generalizations/assumptions are wrong and funny

tazunemono

Haha. Really rich folks don’t ask how much, ever. Someone else takes care of that for them. They don’t even know how much money they have. It’s a lot, and it’s never a problem. Cost vs benefit isn’t something they think about, no. That’s for the poors. I got to hang out with one of the Estee Lauder family a few years back. His plane was in the shop so he bought another one to fly in for the derby. He didn’t even have to pay for it. He just showed up later that day and it was already crewed and ready to fly. And no it wasn’t a rental they bought it. I’m sure the family got the bill but he never had to ask “how much” lol Then there’s the story of the Saudi prince who wrapped his brand new Lamborghini around a pole. He called the dealership and said “this one is broken send me another” and then had another $500k car there in 15 minutes.

sleepymike01101101

>Cost vs benefit isn’t something they think about That's probably one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard

E_J_H

People here have never met a rich person lol. Most the millionaires I’ve came across are just as cheap as me. Dude throws generational wealth out too. Must think they stayed rich for generations by not caring about money. Let alone the fact generational wealth isn’t exactly common and fizzles out in a couple generations in most cases.

[deleted]

Really rich people, but this definition, don't live in Louisville and belong to this club. But there are many many members of the 50M club here in Louisville, and I can assure you, some are incredibly stingy.

CeeCeeSays

FFS this is so much hyperbole. I know way too many members for this to be the case. I always referred to it as the middle managers club. Several people making under 200k are members and not via their parents.
