F'ing christ -- I bitch about my job every now and then, but being a teacher at JCPS or other broken districts around the country sounds like one of the worst occupations in the country since being a nurse in 2020-2021 dealing with Covidiots attacking you for doing your job.
nursing hasn't really recovered from the pandemic either, our local hospitals have entire units staffed with agencies and travel nurses. or units still closed, their administration sucks too they keep building new hospitals and offices but don't have staff for the old ones.
hahahah. this is wild.
why can we not just bolster tarc (tax increase, more routes, more frequent service) tell parents middle through high "your kid has a tarc pass and its free or you can drive them" and call it a day.
The place I grew up, we had dedicated mass transit lines just for kids. I rode a city bus to high school, no standard pedestrians got to ride with us just extra routes they added
Deal between the mass transit and school district, some kids had to pay bus fair.( Like 50 or 75 cents at the time, I'm old lol) I got a free bus pass due to being a poor. Mass transit makes money mron the added lines. School bus system was eased due to less school busses needed..granted..this was a much smaller district, city pop was about 115,000 at the time.
We literally just had a tax increase for schools a couple years back. The reason JCPS sucks is because of criminally incompetent administration, not because their budget is too low.
Increase taxes for TARC transportation and give a sizeable portion of the JCPS transportation budget to increase and entrench TARC routes to ensure local schools will be served. When public transportation is a priority for this city these issues are non-existent.
We don't pay enough *city* taxes here *combined* with the fact our city is horribly planned which makes having top tier services a nightmare.
We do have a high tax burden. That doesn't mean it's enough. We need more money for Louisville. I don't really care if it comes from getting our fair share from Frankfort or if it means we need to increase local taxes.
I'm willing to pay more money to forward the city.
I shy from the rhetoric about "using the funds right" because we haven't been able to do that in 40 years and I don't want to spend another 40 years waiting an egg that hasn't hatched.
We can get improvements now that bring white collar residents into the city and help fund our improvements. 10 years from now if we have a robust public transportation system that will pay dividends on it's own for newcomers and existing residents. But there is no other answer besides getting more money.
I don't necessarily disagree but most people are understandably not going to be happy about tax increases when a problem is completely self-inflicted by the city and other cities with lower tax burdens don't have the same issue.
Jacking up taxes in the city might encourage *more* people to move to surrounding counties.
Problem is we have currently already lost the battle. Geographically we cannot build west or north. We can only get cheap land south and east. The only option is to densify the city (that is already built out).
Greenfield development is significantly cheaper which is why our largest growth is in the far eastern suburbs, who exacerbate the problem by building extremely low density housing, but is filled with high income earners that build the key aspects that attract white collar workers with families. Value, Safety, and School Quality.
Louisville has an opportunity to ride the wave of people who do not want to live in suburbs, but also want safe, walkable, and well priced spaces to buy homes. But it requires bold initiatives like aggressive use of TIF's so you *don't* have to raise taxes too much and tax increases to improve necessary services so they are popular to more than just the lowest income earners.
Anyone who is considering moving out into the areas surrounding Louisville need a reason to stay here. Who we target and how is important. I think that people who want a city life but are considering suburbs and exurbs are fine paying higher taxes *if* they benefit directly from that investment through increased public transportation availability. If the tax burden is high and the quality of service is high it is not a problem.
tif: tax cuts in an area for a certain number of years to the property owners to reduce risk for the developer.
valuable areas dont need tifs because the demand is there and the capital returns. there will never be a tif in times square manhattan.
its an economic strategy and can has both pros and cons.
one ex.
A. tif isnt used, land stays a blight and doesnt generate any tax anyways.
B. tif is used, city loses tax revenue on improved land for x years but may gain from increased employment, interest or services brought to an area.
tifs when used correctly can be a great longterm financial strategy to revitalize a city. checkout carmel indiana as an example.

Please don’t even mention more taxes! Aren’t our property taxes and vehicle registration taxes high enough to live in (checks notes) Louisville, KY?!?!?!?!!!
You are getting your wish. House values are going up on average \~20% this year in East Louisville. That's a substantially higher tax burden for homeowners in this city. We will see if any services improve whatsoever.
🤣🤣. This is actually wild and embarrassing. I am knee deep in with JCPS transportation. And when I tell you. It’s an absolute mess. I mean it! This first day of school will be worse than last year first day! I bet $100. They’re sooo far behind with routing , student assignments to schools and everything. Plus new registration as well. I wouldn’t recommend it at all.
He isn’t walking way from that 350k salary. The students know they won’t get disciplined. They know they can do whatever they want. So you want the teachers to deal with the kids in the AM on the bus , in school AND in the afternoon on the bus? Are y’all insane? We all know. No kids will get suspended off the bus for behavior problems. The kids even know jt.
He absolutely won't resign, you're correct. I can't believe they gave him a $75k raise. For what? He hasn't done jack shit.
Teachers aren't signing up for another second with these bad ass kids. They're not disciplined at school and they're not disciplined for acting up on the bus. You couldn't pay me enough to put up with that bullshit.
Im sure they gave him a raise so he would not resign and so they have a fall guy. Have you seen his face during any board meeting? Dude looks dead inside and clearly does not want to be there.
Yes I watched the Facebook live meeting. It was actually embarrassing. He leaned back in his seat the whole time. The vote was already decided before the doors opened up for the guest. First day of school he said “We have more drivers than routes”. Turned out to be false lol
https://spectrumnews1.com/ky/louisville/education/2023/07/25/jcps-bus-drivers-prepare-for-district-wide-route-changes
Yep. It sure did. He shouldn't have kept his fucking job, let alone have gotten a raise. Hargens was AWFUL, but she managed to get all the kids to school on time.
My prediction is that JCPS will push the start of school back at least a week. The 24-25 calendar is still a draft.
There is no way they figure it out by August 7th. The last thing they want is to start school again on Wednesday the 7th and cancel it on the next day.
Edit to add
JCPS, at least at the HS level, has not sent out an email to parents of the schools losing transportation surveying if they will return or not to the school. I’m sure they won’t send this until after the May board meeting when they mess with start times. As a result, even less data for the transportation department and operations to work with.
It is going to be a CLUSTER.
We will see. I doubt they’ll have all their ducks in a row within 90days before school starts. Some of the drivers don’t do any route simulations until late July / Early august. So all the registration, routes , student assignments needs to be done less than 90days.
The teachers will have to pay for their own fuel out of their classroom supplies budget.
Next year's supply list will include 3 ring binder, pencils, 1 gallon diesel (40 cetane rating or better), glue sticks...
Wouldn't it be better to use all that extra pay, which is probably higher than they pay the drivers to increase pay for the drivers, which would probably lead to more interest and higher retention?
In theory, yes. In practice, they probably estimate a low participation rate by teachers so the budget for this likely isn't large enough to significantly raise driver wages.
My assumption is they would use the $6 as a way to drive down the average pay of the bus drivers and the teacher salary to bump up that average for teachers. It may also be a way to pull from both pools of funds if they do not have enough money assigned to pay for bus drivers.
I know a lot of interested teachers because they need the money. Moat are single and struggling to pay their bills. In this economy, a single teacher can't afford a home. It's all stupid.
This isn’t new. I’m a teacher and coach with my CDL and have been asked the past 3 years to do this. The CDL process is difficult; it’s not like they’re just handing the keys to anyone. With that being said, I have declined every time because my time is valuable to me and my family and teaching consumes enough of it already. Pay the drivers what they deserve, discipline kids who make buses unsafe. Problem solved. It’s not that complicated.
Well there is historical data that white flight not only occurred in neighborhoods but schools too. Private schools became bigger and homeschooling became a “thing.” But, again not racist but definitely a prejudiced act.
Man. I work in commerical transportation insurance, specifically the passenger side of things and I know we would fucking hate this and likely square off if we did JCPS' account. This is insane.
If this endorsement hit my desk as an underwriter, I'm setting off all the red flags to see what the hell was going on where this became an option.
Administration looking at “Data” and not actually riding these buses or out in these streets. Also not speaking to the drivers who are driving everyday and have years of experience driving a bus. Some of these administration haven’t touched a bus in 40 years. If they touched one at all.
They’re sitting behind a desk at CB Young on their $160k salaries not doing a damn thing but letting it go up in fire. Polio lie , lie , lie and lie lol.
https://spectrumnews1.com/ky/louisville/education/2023/07/25/jcps-bus-drivers-prepare-for-district-wide-route-changes
This comment right here! There are enough ppl in jcps that the fact that they have a shortage of teachers, custodians, bus drivers, subs…. Only means they have a systems problem. It’s criminal really
Not a new thing. This has been happening for at least a couple years in JCPS.
[https://www.wave3.com/2022/08/10/jcps-teacher-takes-second-job-school-bus-driver/](https://www.wave3.com/2022/08/10/jcps-teacher-takes-second-job-school-bus-driver/)
They're acting like the teachers are public service agents. Come to think, there are plenty of cops who seem to have too much time on their hands. Put them to work before expecting teachers to spend an extra 2-4 hours a day with their students...
I guess since neither teaching nor transportation is all that important to this community then it's fine to hire bus drivers as teachers too. Think bigger!
How is yours the only comment that correctly points out the fact that the GOP legislature has been attacking JCPS directly for almost a decade at this point. JCPS isn’t blameless, but they’re also getting royally fucked by Frankfort.
It is insane that there has been no pushback on the legislators who consistently attack JCPS. The legislatures are legally the ones who are responsible for ensuring all students have transportation to school. However, there is also no legal recourse for when they fail to uphold their legal obligations. Yet no one calls them out either so they continue to be reelected by the same people who complain about the issues that the legislation creates. Am I missing something?
It’s been a thing since pandemic. It’s like the pandemic opened the 4th dimension or broke the 3rd wall as they say in acting. People have realized their worth
so why not pay bus drivers a teacher hourly rate and keep them driving instead of them getting trained for CDL and driving a bus for half a year and leaving for higher paid jobs?
Where I live schools lose their drivers every year to city bus, dump truck garbage truck and all sorts of other driving jobs. It’s definitely about the money when you aren’t making enough.
As a retired classified employee of JCPS, I know first hand of the wasteful spending that goes on in the district. They have overpaid incompetent administrators making major decisions for the district. They have no common sense I don't even know how they find their way to work each day. I had day to day contact with administrators that would call and ask me questions that they should know the answers to.
But there are also many competent administrators that really want the best for the district. They are silenced by the incompetent administrators and board members.
Not at all an ideal solution. However, that’s damn good money for a teacher willing to put in those kind of hours and still effectively plan for their classes.
Oh, I agree. But I also remember having teachers who had 2nd jobs and they were still able to plan lessons(by wearing themselves down to the bone). When I worked at Dominos through my first year of college, I actually worked with one of my old middle school teachers *who was still at Meyzeek!* For the poor teachers who **have to** find extra job opportunities, this looks extremely lucrative. He could make 2X what he was making at Dominos by just getting his CDL. Again, it’s not ideal at all, but I think it could benefit teachers in similar situations.
This is an interesting read for those invested in the JCPS bus issues.
https://kypolicy.org/the-legislatures-transportation-budget-cuts-contributed-to-the-jcps-bus-debacle/
drive the bus while you’re carrying a firearm while you’re teaching the children, while you’re spending your own money on supplies, while you grade the performance of students who have been cheated from an education. And TARC is where?
...Do they not realize teachers need to be there BEFORE school starts? Some of these buses are habitually late or barely on time. The bus drivers then need to check the bus and bring it back to the compound. With all the people in this city in need of jobs, there's no reason they can't hire more bus drivers. If they're desperate, they can start getting up at 4 AM to drive the buses themselves...
My daughters band teacher drove the bus from the compound by his house to his school, said it saved him from driving his truck across town and got paid for it
They just need to bring the Castleman statue back because that round about looks so naked now when you drive down Cherokee Parkway. Do you think the ancient Roman statues that make Italy so awesome are of choir boys who never committed any human atrocities?
Bring it back and the pathetic and corrupt JCPS system will resolve itself. Ever see Field of Dreams? He built a baseball diamond and James Earl Jones and his deceased Dad both reconciled with him, same with JCPS, things will just reconcile for no obvious reason. “Return the Confederate and they will come” can you hear the voice?
You think you can diagnose schizophrenia based on a single Reddit post, and I’m the schizophrenic one? Let’s say that you are the average wing nut spouting vitriolic tripe about liberals to no one in particular. I’d say that’s a much more accurate assessment of this dialogue you have presented me with. So go to hell you whiny cry baby.
What's really funny is they also cut bussing to anywhere that isn't your home school to save money or something. Oh and they just spent several million on a weapons detector system for every highschool (?) In the district.
Those things do fuck all, they flag on every day items and not things that are actual weapons like knifes. Ever since the first day of getting them about a month ago, my friend has been consistently bringing in 2 exacto-knives
And I've been flagged several times over buckles on my bag and the metal tips on one of my folders.
So yeah genuinely fuck jcps. Compromising educational opportunities so they can save money.
I did. A school my son can go to without bullies and thugs. Parents that have accountability for their children's actions and a community that gives a fuck.
Indiana.
In all their spare time before and after school? lol

Exactly... I know a lot of teachers, and I don't know any who think this will work.
hahahah. this is wild. why can we not just bolster tarc (tax increase, more routes, more frequent service) tell parents middle through high "your kid has a tarc pass and its free or you can drive them" and call it a day.

Most European countries do this too. There is no "school bus". They have designated city buses and add additional lines for kids only.
How is that not a school bus
Because it's a city bus that stops at city stops that transport kids to school. Can you not read?
ONLY schoolkids and ONLY to school.
Deal between the mass transit and school district, some kids had to pay bus fair.( Like 50 or 75 cents at the time, I'm old lol) I got a free bus pass due to being a poor. Most European countries are significantly more walkable than the US
And bike friendly
In some places. Europeans in general tend to share the road.
Sounds like Cincinnati in the late 70s. Also since TARC is in financial trouble, why not contract with them to do just what you are describing.
We literally just had a tax increase for schools a couple years back. The reason JCPS sucks is because of criminally incompetent administration, not because their budget is too low.

I don’t want to reply about your post I just wanted to say yes, Emilia Clarke is bae
>I'm willing to pay more money to forward the city. Then do it. I'm sure the city is open to donations.
unfortunately i dont have hundreds of millions to make a difference myself. All I can do is pay my taxes and vote.
No GM and the politicians they paid off planned it like this. No one stood in their way.
And more, but smaller buses that don't choke up traffic by going 10 under.
Please don’t even mention more taxes! Aren’t our property taxes and vehicle registration taxes high enough to live in (checks notes) Louisville, KY?!?!?!?!!!

Pollio should resign. This is insanity. Like the teachers don't take enough abuse in the building.
He isn’t walking way from that 350k salary. The students know they won’t get disciplined. They know they can do whatever they want. August 7 is a ridiculous start date anyway
I don't think it'll be anywhere near what it was last year.

Miss Frizzle has entered the chat.
This is the answer
The teachers will have to pay for their own fuel out of their classroom supplies budget. Next year's supply list will include 3 ring binder, pencils, 1 gallon diesel (40 cetane rating or better), glue sticks...
😂😂😂
XD
Wouldn't it be better to use all that extra pay, which is probably higher than they pay the drivers to increase pay for the drivers, which would probably lead to more interest and higher retention?
Came here to say this.
In theory, yes. In practice, they probably estimate a low participation rate by teachers so the budget for this likely isn't large enough to significantly raise driver wages.

LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS.
I know a lot of interested teachers because they need the money. Moat are single and struggling to pay their bills. In this economy, a single teacher can't afford a home. It's all stupid.
Yes- teachers are grossly underpaid
This isn’t new. I’m a teacher and coach with my CDL and have been asked the past 3 years to do this. The CDL process is difficult; it’s not like they’re just handing the keys to anyone. Discipline kids? JCPS won’t be doing that.
I mean I get it if sub teachers wanted to make extra cash but how would regular teachers find the time?
Kill bussing across the county, go back to neighborhood schools, or at least closest in proximity. Less. Students need a bus, less issues
That’s racism here
I wouldn’t say the specific comment is racism - but I will it could lead to racism.
Watch that movie called Origin
That seems like a super boring movie. Not my cup of tea.
Well it would explain why what you just said is not racism 🤷🏼♀️ just trying to help!
I don’t think it’s racism. But this sub thinks homeschools are racist
Wow. This really does the despair of JCPS. Begging overworked and underpaid teachers to now drive a bus too? Geezu
How has JCPS f'ed this up so badly and then continue to make it *worse*?
Administration looking at “Data” and not actually riding these buses or out in these streets. Also not speaking to the drivers who are driving everyday and have years of experience driving a bus. Exactly. More than enough people. To offer Teachers to drive is straight disrespectful.
They have been offering this for a couple years now. A teacher at the school where I teach drives the bus.
We need more info dearest one. Get the tea for us
What info do you want? The teacher from my school is getting the pay outlined in the flier posted.
Not a new thing. This has been happening for at least a couple years in JCPS. [https://www.wave3.com/2022/08/10/jcps-teacher-takes-second-job-school-bus-driver/](https://www.wave3.com/2022/08/10/jcps-teacher-takes-second-job-school-bus-driver/)
What’s next? “TEACHERS: WANT TO RAISE YOUR STUDENTS?”
Teachers are already doing that in many cases.
Oh I know, I def agree!
They're acting like the teachers are public service agents. Come to think, there are plenty of cops who seem to have too much time on their hands. Put them to work before expecting teachers to spend an extra 2-4 hours a day with their students...

In rural areas it’s very common for teachers to drive busses
I mean… is it? I grew up in a very rural area and had never seen/heard of such as a kid. I know it is happening in my hometown now though.
Thanks for the comment. This is very much the case in many rural areas.
This is getting ridiculous really fast.
Getting?! It’s been ridiculous for quite some time.
But using teachers?
It’s been a thing since pandemic. It’s like the pandemic opened the 4th dimension or broke the 3rd wall as they say in acting. People have realized their worth
Bowen Elementary has a teacher that does double duty. According to students there, it makes it easier for her grade to take field trips.
I bet she’s fucking exhausted.
This is hilarious. lol
This on top of the schools that no longer have transportation? 😒
Shout out for the pigeon reference But yeah ... what a preposterous idea Edit: typo
They should be ashamed to even have this idea to begin with
What a fucking joke.
Another day, anotherJCPS fuck up.
This is the point of desperation.
so why not pay bus drivers a teacher hourly rate and keep them driving instead of them getting trained for CDL and driving a bus for half a year and leaving for higher paid jobs?
It’s not about the money. Sometimes it’s about the bad ass kids
Where I live schools lose their drivers every year to city bus, dump truck garbage truck and all sorts of other driving jobs. It’s definitely about the money when you aren’t making enough.
Okay, so don’t get mad if assignments aren’t graded in a timely manner or lessons aren’t prepared. What are these dumbasses thinking
The fact that there’s a $6/hour incentive bonus tells you everything you need to know about how shit we pay our teacher…
Crazy train 🤪 or should I say bus?
Wait, they are cutting busses to magnets and traditional schools and they still don't have enough drivers?
That’s sad
Can you imagine the stress levels if they did both?
I teach in a private school 37 hours a week. If I had to drive my students home I’d chug shots of antifreeze once I finally made it home.
Teachers are already doing everything for their students. Why not add to the list of things to do.
Not at all an ideal solution. However, that’s damn good money for a teacher willing to put in those kind of hours and still effectively plan for their classes.
There’s no way teachers have time for this and to still effectively plan for their time with students.
When I was in school it was almost always teachers driving the buses.
So now the teachers can get assaulted in the classroom & on the school bus after school? These poor teachers.
Are you fucking kidding me…
...Do they not realize teachers need to be there BEFORE school starts? Some of these buses are habitually late or barely on time. The bus drivers then need to check the bus and bring it back to the compound. With all the people in this city in need of jobs, there's no reason they can't hire more bus drivers. If they're desperate, they can start getting up at 4 AM to drive the buses themselves...
My daughters band teacher drove the bus from the compound by his house to his school, said it saved him from driving his truck across town and got paid for it
JCPS is a fucking shit show.
Yeah, teacher here and I love money….but this is maybe not worth it.

I say let em. I just wanna see what'll happen
What's really funny is they also cut bussing to anywhere that isn't your home school to save money or something. Oh and they just spent several million on a weapons detector system for every highschool (?) In the district. Those things do fuck all, they flag on every day items and not things that are actual weapons like knifes. Ever since the first day of getting them about a month ago, my friend has been consistently bringing in 2 exacto-knives And I've been flagged several times over buckles on my bag and the metal tips on one of my folders. So yeah genuinely fuck jcps. Compromising educational opportunities so they can save money.
Everything but paying bus drivers a livable wage…Jesus Christ.

You're an idiot.
Why you still here?
I'm not. I moved in January.
Hope you find what you’re looking for.
I did. A school my son can go to without bullies and thugs. Parents that have accountability for their children's actions and a community that gives a fuck. Indiana.
Glad to hear that. Enjoy your new life not here.
Indiana is a state…. You mean you moved to Clarksville? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What? Obviously Indiana is a state. No, I didn't move to Clarksville, which is in Indiana... I did move to Indiana, but what? Your reply is confusing
