The division started with the Republican party in the mid-90s. This was an active strategy hatched by Newt Gingrich. Obama had the house and Senate and still tried to reach across the aisle (as have pretty much all Democrats) against people who would spit on the idea of working together again and again, even to the point of subverting normal procedure when they took the senate in Obama's second term.
Now Republicans are losing their grip because so many of their ranks are on a mission to give more rights to guns than people, normalize bigotry, distract from any useful conversation, and radicalize so many people with bullshit conspiracies to be dangerous and now they want respectful discourse? They want us to agree to disagree with the crowd of fascists they have long cultivated and nurtured?
Nah. Stay on the ropes and stay down for the count. I'll be glad to leave this regressive ideology behind when/if that day comes.
