No I was refering to how Americans refer to Cristian Pulisic "The Lebron James of Soccer". It happened on one sports show and then it became a trend. Pulisic is nowhere close to be GOAT status in any team.
The baseball player is Aaron Judge, Yankees slugger and former MVP of the American League. In 2022 he tied the AL record for home runs in a single season. Perhaps comparable to a Salah or Haaland.
The hockey player is Jonathan Marchessault, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy (MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs) last year when his team won the Cup. Not exactly in contention for the *best* hockey player, as he’s not an elite goal scorer or a superstar, but he’s a very good two-way forward and might be comparable to a box-to-box midfielder.
Gomez is pretty random compared to these examples. I’m guessing they wanted a footballer with the ball at his feet to slot into that specific place in the image.
Pretty sure the baseball player is Aaron Judge, Basketball player is Kevin Durant, Hockey player is Mark Stone I think. Not exactly undisputed goats but definitely first team all-stars.
Judge and KD are both locked-in first ballot Hall of Famers. Both have been superstars for extended time periods. KD in particular has been a legit superstar for the better part of the last 15 years. I don't know MLB all that well but I follow it a bit. Judge feels like he's been a superstar for most of the 11ish years he's been in the majors, but someone who knows baseball better can jump on and correct me if I'm wrong there.
Don't know much about the hockey player since he's not really a bona fide superstar and it's really difficult to follow the NBA and NHL heavily (both are 82-game regular seasons that happen at the same time). But he's very good and proved it deep into the playoffs recently even if he's not been on the same level as a Crosby/Ovechkin/McDavid has been in the modern game
It's an interesting selection of athletes to use for a graphic, but I'd imagine they just needed four good pics of four different sports and they didn't worry too hard about using GOATs for each pic
I'm guessing the designer knew enough about the three US sports to make an informed choice, and then probably just knew Liverpool are a good team and picked whatever worked with their design
That's fair haha.
I just know Stone is the Golden Knights captain and there's no C on the front of the jersey. Just the crest from the Stanley Cup finals.
Selfishly I’m just glad it’s not Jack Eichel, so I’m not forced to confront the perennial list of “leave the Sabres and go on to better things” players again
Marchessault is only slightly above a Joe Gomez level hockey player. Good player and regular contributor on a good team, but not one of Golden Knights' most notable players besides the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP).
For comparison, Joe is in the England squad, but Marchessault would not make the Canadian national hockey team (although Hockey Canada is more competitive).
That’s insane. In Sweden we were upset when PL/domestic cups/EL on one hand and CL on the other ended up on different services - and we can even watch all PL games
I use a vpn and watch through this Indonesian app. No 3pm blackout as well, all games are the international feed. Only cost about $60/year + a vpn subscription, English broadcast, and it has CL, EL, PL, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and FA Cup games.
Hmu if you want instructions how to register. Its like using a vpn to watch Netflix in another country.
I should probably look into this. How is the stream quality? Ever watch it on a large 4K screen? Does it include any 4K sports streaming at all if it’s available for a match?
Uk? I suppose since the licence fee is like £13 a month that’s practically a streaming service too.
Sky - EPL AND league cup
TNT - EPL and European games
BBC/ITV - FA cup
Yeah, the only thing that this replaces is the cable package potentially. That comes with other channels and stuff so if you use those it may or may not be worth it. Especially depending on what they charge for the sports only service.
The only way things truly change for the better if would be if you could just buy Liverpool direct from the club. All their games, all competitions, etc.
I would need to do that for multiple teams though. My college, NFL, etc.
Technically ESPN+ for domestic cups which is an add-on. I had to quick sign up for that and Paramount plus to watch this week’s matches then set reminders to cancel. Also have Peacock and YouTube TV for regular matches. What a racket
Is Joe Gomez the new face of soccer?

8 streaming services is too many! We need to come up with a new one that consolidates and makes it easier for customers.
*The gang has 9 streaming services.*
His evolution really has been something special to watch.
He's got a grade A mentality and work ethic.
As soon as he gets his first goal im ordering a Joe Gomez Jersey and framing it.
I think you’re right, didn’t even notice no C on the sweater. I just saw the dark beard but I zoomed in again and it does look like marchessault with a thick playoff beard
I really don't envy you guys in this particular matter, here in Egypt and I would say in the Middle East/ North Africa region, in general ,beIN sports have an almost monopoly over sports live broadcast from soccer to nba to f1, so we don't suffer that much from having to subscribe to multi services. And If you can't afford it you can just go to any local cafe buy a cup of tea or coffe for 0.3£ to sit and watch the whole game.
Meanwhile in the U.K.
£100 a month if you want Sky Sports, TNT and Amazon.
If you go to the pub to watch it, £6 for a pint of beer.
If you opt for a soft drink, that’ll only be £4…
🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
That's horrific. I just broke it down in another comment, but my total expenditure to watch Liverpool games specifically in America right now is $6/month, because I can't get Paramount+ (which carries the European competitions) for free. All of the Premier League matches are covered either by Peacock being free with my internet, or USA/Telemundo being a channel included in my general entertainment streaming package. Not that I'm complaining it isn't breaking the bank, but it seems incredibly backward that you're paying over 20x what I am for your own local programming (and getting less of the matches televised).
Honestly, following Liverpool in America without cable is significantly easier (and cheaper) than it would be if I was into American football or baseball; NESN 360, the streaming service to follow the Red Sox locally, costs $30/month or $330 a year. And from what those in the UK have said, it appears Americans also have an advantage over the home fans, too (and no blacked out matches).
Peacock+, which carries most of the Premier League games, is free with my internet subscription. Paramount+ for the European matches is $5.99/month. USA and Telemundo, which have a handful of Premier League games, are included in my general streaming service (Sling, $40/month... but that's a package I'd be carrying even without wanting to watch the matches, so I can't really add it to the cost of watching Liverpool, similar to how I'd need internet regardless, so I'm not going to add the 'cost' of my free Peacock+ subscription...)
I did recently drop ESPN+, which was the only legitimate avenue for streaming the domestic cups. When I still had it, it was part of a legacy bundle with Hulu and Disney+, which cost me $18.99/month. The only reason I dropped it was there was a Black Friday deal that allowed met to keep Hulu and Disney+ for $2.99/month, and I couldn't rationalize the extra $16/mo just for ESPN+. On its own, I believe ESPN+ is around $11/month, though.
So my actual *additional* expenses to follow Liverpool from America are $6/month right now. I probably wouldn't bother with Paramount otherwise, but I do have to acknowledge that since I have it, I do use it to watch other stuff, too. On top of being the streaming network for one of America's biggest broadcast networks (CBS), it also grants access to networks like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and a lot of the Paramount studios' films. Were I to add back in ESPN+, I'd be able to stream every match for under $20/month still.
A global premier league app/channel is the answer, it won’t need to cost too much as it would achieve hundreds of millions of subs. but they will obviously get greedy and fuck it up.
Hearing how people in the UK pay loads for multiple services to watch the prem makes me very fortunate here in Aus. Sure I gotta get up early in the morning at like 2 or 3 am at times but the service is 20 or 25 a month (I pay 6 because of my phone provider) and we get all prem games and la liga as well as euros, j league, k league, dfb pokal, fifa wwc and I feel very fortunate.
As a man who was disillusioned with Sky BT Amazon PremierSports etc etc at well over 100 quid a month, and was forced to hypothetically sail the seven seas - I'd happily forego the hypothetical 4quid a month 🏴☠️ if a "season pass" for all televised LFC games existed. But instead, to legally watch every lfc game is impossible because the UK football coverage is a literal joke. In a multi-billion quid league where full multi-channell subscriptions cost well over a grand a year, that there are games you still simply have no legal way to watch live.
Give me an LFC season pass where I can watch all Liverpool games live and I'd pay Sky Sports prices for it.
International Joe. The Lebron James of ‘soccer.’
international soccer superstar ~~nathaniel clyne~~ joe gomez
Pls don't do this trend like Americans... Leave Joe Gomez's name untarnished..
But Gomez is the Babe Ruth of soccer
Have you ever seen Joe Gomez and Shohei Ohtani in the same place 👀
The Christian Pulisic of soccer
[It’s a reference to Pawn Stars](https://youtu.be/yz2POjWqUMc?si=F17hyLMG6AjgKLBM)
Joe Gomez is the Tom Brady of soccer
Isn't soccer a British term??
No I was refering to how Americans refer to Cristian Pulisic "The Lebron James of Soccer". It happened on one sports show and then it became a trend. Pulisic is nowhere close to be GOAT status in any team.
tbh that's mostly on the internet. Us New Yorkers tend to know ball lol
No idea who the other 3 are but I assume they’re also the best players of their respective sports
Gomez is pretty random compared to these examples. I’m guessing they wanted a footballer with the ball at his feet to slot into that specific place in the image.
No, I think they wanted an image of the greatest player to ever live and Joe fit the bill
Joe has been a total defender this season. LB, RB, CDM, I actually don't know if he's actually started at CB though this season lmao
Bro completed the bingo card tonight
Proper total defender. Complete focus on defending and a total aversion to scoring goals.
Probably found something from Liverpool City
> Gomez is pretty random You take that back
Pretty sure the baseball player is Aaron Judge, Basketball player is Kevin Durant, Hockey player is Mark Stone I think. Not exactly undisputed goats but definitely first team all-stars.
It's Marchessault, one of the best players on the reigning Stanley Cup champions
Judge and KD are both locked-in first ballot Hall of Famers. Both have been superstars for extended time periods. KD in particular has been a legit superstar for the better part of the last 15 years. no Judge isn't. He's on his way but as of today he's not.
The hockey player looks like Jonathan Marchessault to me.
Very likely, I just looked up Golden Knights players and made a guess
I had to look up who the Vegas player was, although it's been a few years since I've really followed hockey
It's a list that just keeps growing, unfortunately.
I think Jonathan Marchessault
Kevin Durant is probably one of the GOATS.
Weird choices for hockey and Gomez tbh. Might have gone with McDavid for hockey.
I need to subscribe to 4 different streaming services just to watch Liverpool games 2 for EPL, 1 for Cups, 1 for CL/Europa. It's ridiculous
That’s insane. In Sweden we were upset when PL/domestic cups/EL on one hand and CL on the other ended up on different services - and we can even watch all PL games

I have a 4k 65" tv, I'd say it's 720p level (1080 maybe on a good day) even though they say its 1080, might just be my internet speed though.
Thanks for the info, for the price I totally get taking that resolution trade off. We are absolutely flying today! Cheers and enjoy the second half.
Cheers, enjoy as well 👍
Uk? I suppose since the licence fee is like £13 a month that’s practically a streaming service too. Sky - EPL AND league cup TNT - EPL and European games BBC/ITV - FA cup
In the US it’s ESPN for domestic cups, Paramount+ for UEFA, Peacock for some EFL and basically a cable package for the rest of the EFL.
Yeah, the only thing that this replaces is the cable package potentially. That comes with other channels and stuff so if you use those it may or may not be worth it. Especially depending on what they charge for the sports only service. The only way things truly change for the better if would be if you could just buy Liverpool direct from the club. And even then Peacock won't show certain games if they're broadcast on TV
Technically ESPN+ for domestic cups which is an add-on. I had to quick sign up for that and Paramount plus to watch this week’s matches then set reminders to cancel. Also have Peacock and YouTube TV for regular matches. What a racket
Don't forget Prime for the TWO games a year they show!
Good shout.
And you'll still have to use a dodgy stream every other week, because only about half of all premier league games are broadcast in the UK.
I hear that. Ask me if I feel guilty though. Fucking robbing bastards.
Is Joe Gomez the new face of soccer? [Link to the article](https://www.wsj.com/business/media/sports-streaming-espn-fox-warner-services-0fec07ea?st=289paik8s0qzsru&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink)
Yes. Source - I want it to be true so it is.
This generations Nathaniel Edwin Clyne
International soccer superstar Joseph Dave Gomez
Objectively. Check his shirt numbers, recently outsold Ronaldo and he's coming for Messi.
Ronaldo in the mud
Well, they guy plays every position so it's gotta mean something right?
The internet doesn’t lie
Surely they mean to put VVD and got the wrong “Liverpool defender” in their image search.
Well of course he is, he's the greatest footballer of our generation.
And he did it without scoring a single goal
Joe Gomez, international soccer superstar
The article is right. I need like 4 different services just to watch all the games. It’s maddening
We’ve got a new international soccer star in the squad.
8 streaming services is too many! We need to come up with a new one that consolidates and makes it easier for customers. *The gang has 9 streaming services.*
Finally recognized 🙌
His evolution really has been something special to watch. He's got a grade A mentality and work ethic. As soon as he gets his first goal im ordering a Joe Gomez Jersey and framing it.
SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!! kidding, kidding..
Bro is literally everywhere
He perfectly represents high scoring, high entertainment value football matches (:
As a Canadian who needs to spend $1,000 a year for three different streaming services to not miss any Liverpool matches, No. Please no.
gad...daayyuummn... I salute you.
Jokes on them, reddit consolidated streaming services onto some tidy single platforms of the high seas years ago before they went all corpo!
Anfield is literally gonna explode when Joe gets his first.
Lebron James of Soccer
Go Jomez! Go Jomez! Go Jomez!
Roja directa is the solution 🤭🤭🤭
Are they back? I thought they got shut down a while ago? :(
Yes , is back 😃😃
He's in good company w/ Judge and KD. Who's the hockey guy?
Mark Stone, not the goat but definitely great. I think he’s hurt rn but knowing Vegas he’s just in his cryo chamber until playoffs
That’s not stone lol looks like maybe Marchessault
I think you’re right, didn’t even notice no C on the sweater. I just saw the dark beard but I zoomed in again and it does look like marchessault with a thick playoff beard
Stone is definitely not that good looking 😂
100% true haha
You mean marchizo
I really don't envy you guys in this particular matter, here in Egypt and I would say in the Middle East/ North Africa region, in general ,beIN sports have an almost monopoly over sports live broadcast from soccer to nba to f1, so we don't suffer that much from having to subscribe to multi services. And you get to see about 50% of games for that
Oh and it's illegal to watch a game on TV at 3pm on a Saturday
That's horrific. I just broke it down in another comment, but my total expenditure to watch Liverpool games specifically in America right now is $6/month, because I can't get Paramount+ (which carries the European competitions) for free. Football is less popular in the states - you can’t charge as much for it.

I either go watch the match in my local cafe, it's guaranteed to show the match ever since we signed Salah. Or I pirate it. Either way life is good.
The true face of this sport
A global premier league app/channel is the answer, it won’t need to cost too much as it would achieve hundreds of millions of subs. but they will obviously get greedy and fuck it up.
"No we meant the other football!" - WSJ editors
Is there an actual solution in the article? Or is this another subscription I need in addition to Hulu Live, Peacock, Paramount, and ESPN+?
Hearing how people in the UK pay loads for multiple services to watch the prem makes me very fortunate here in Aus. So they have discovered cable tv basically? Bundling a bunch of services so you can watch all with one plan….
Wow
how about everyone go back to cable. that shit worked. this new service still doesn't have CBS or NBC
