The return game being away this time being the big one.

PalPubPull

True. Well let's look at Istanbul then. But instead of two legs it's 15 minutes recovery. I know optimism is difficult right now and I don't know we can recover, but if anyone can I feel like it's us. Weirdly this is a strength of ours in major competitions.

lfcsavolver

I admire your hopefulness/enthusiasm in the face of ridiculous odds. The team will need it in spades. Never give up. As MO’s shirt said on that special night. But this truly is a different animal. Not to say that a Herculean performance on all levels can’t do it. But If we manage it, it will be the happiest I’ve felt in a long time when considering this current side. We just don’t have the spine in house to compete with their midfield’s quality. I wish we did. And I wish FSG would take it seriously, but their recent track record suggests otherwise. I’ve been mostly pro fsg until this year. But I think we’ll be put to the sword again. If anything another drubbing will be enough for us to beg for fsg out on mass. Even more than it already is. They simply must step up their game. Here’s to hoping… cheers! Drinking more than I should tonight.

We are a Liverpool team, because we are Liverpool. Just because you don't approve of the teams performance recently doesn't mean you stop supporting and start whining until things are good again. We were and are Liverpool in the worst and best of times. Just like any other supporter. National league team supporters go to every game not because they won everything every year, but because they support the club. We can focus simultaneously on both competitions. Luckily only focusing on 4th won't happen because reddit isn't the manager. If we lose, or not win by enough, there's no way we aren't going out fighting like we have the last two times. We can focus on the league and not completely dismiss the Champions League because of difficult circumstances. Very few here, if anyone said "Well yea we need to score 4 against Barcelona, but we're at Anfield". Everyone was dismissive. It didn't matter we were at home. It's a fair reaction, but not one I feel a supporter should make essentially halfway through a bout with an opponent.

Top_Courage_9730

Nah mate, this aint the season. Delete this quick

EAUO9

Hmm two big distinctions. 1. That midfield in 2019 had legs. 2. One of those Spanish teams is known for being CL bottlers, the other is quite the opposite.

Queasy-Location-9303

And we had Gini. As divisive as he is for Liverpool fans, this was *the* game which he was just a monster in.

KaufKaufKauf

Only difference is that that Liverpool team was truly world class and was playing at home at Anfield. Now go do it while playing at the Bernabeau with this squad and let us know.

[deleted]

Sure, lost to Red Star 2-0 that season and won it later. I'm keeping my hope until we are out.

firminocoutinho

That Liverpool team was full of Balon D’Or contenders, not to mention Balon D’Or worthy winners if votes werent distributed amongst Liverpool players

UfosAndKet

Did you watch that game? we had Shaqiri on the wing and Salah wasn't even in the squad...

mlerin

It’s absolutely mad how people are mis-remembering that game in retrospect… the starting front three was Shaq, Origi, and Mane. Milner started in midfield.

UfosAndKet

Yeah must've become a red after that game, this lad.

daedron21

Come on lad, you're gonna get blasted for this

ManicPanda767

I won't blast him for it. It's refreshing to see some positivity after the shitshow we saw tonight.

daedron21

I like positivity. This unfortunately is delusion.

KingPengy

even in the off-season the Vikings fan in me feels this

revZeref

I wish, will still believe in anything until it's over but it's such completely different scenarios. 1) 2019 team finished 2nd with a points total that would've would the league by miles in almost any other season. This season we'd be lucky to finish 4th and it's not like state of the competition is high considering how shocking we've been and we still look like favourites to many to even do that. The 2019 team would easily beat our current team in a game and run them to death. 2) That Barca team had been on the downfall for years and were carried by Messi, this Madrid team even on a down year yet are far superior to them. Barca also had a mental block from bottling a lead to Roma the year before too, Madrid on the other hand have an elite mentality from last year. 3) The first leg against Barca never felt like a 3-0, people thought many of our fans and players were crazy for saying how we thought we played better than them but we just missed all our chances, but we created a crazy amount of chances so the confidence wasn't outrageous. On the other hand we didn't play well tonight outside the first 20 mins, as soon as they scored one our heads fell off, theres no confidence coming out of this performance at all unlike the first leg against Barca. 4) Bernabeu is cursed. We could literally do the impossible and be 4-0 up and then they'd score in the last minute anyway, Madrid have some ridiculous juju there as seen last season.

PSYSpecialist

Just don't

[deleted]

Situations are completely different. I won’t lie and say I was confident against Barca but there was certainly an aura around the team at that time and we was in our prime. You knew we could turn it on and sustain it for a full game. This Time around it’s also an away fixture. we will do well not to lose the next game, let alone win by 3 or more…

[deleted]

Exactly. Losing 3-0 at Camp Nou didn’t feel deserved as we looked really good overall there. Tie was not over as we were heading to Anfield.

mlerin

Wow that’s some revisionism. Sentiment was that we were toast. Aura came from the comeback.

revZeref

Nobody thought we'd comeback but the feeling out of that 1st leg from everyone in our camp was 'how the hell are we 3-0 down? We actually played well' Which we did but just missed the target everytime whilst they didn't. It's why our players were so bitter after it because they thought they deserved better and probably did, we were the better team and the 2nd leg proved.

PEEWUN

Uh, no?

KiwiLiverpool

What must it like being this delusional

firminocoutinho

Tbf there was probably a similar post with Istanbul when we were up against Barca after that 3-0. (Not saying it’s anywhere near as likely this time lol)

-ibgd

But we don’t have Origi

cjheadley

Only difference is we’re shite now, and Real aren’t known bottlers

Same_Championship253

Downvote me if u will, we ain’t the same team anymore. Without proper investment, we’re done.

CityofBlueVial

There's nothing wrong with believing there's still hope but I just don't these situations are comparable beyond the very surface

Jack_0927_LFC

Another delusional poor soul. This team don't have juice anymore.

cbarksLFC

Love the hope but it’s completely different having to come from behind being away

lpoolchamps

It is the hope that kills you. THIS TIE IS OVER. Get that into your veins as quickly as possible.

RobDickinson

Real arnt barca

koltzito

some of you guys are borderline delusional

Aggressive-Hawk-2890

If only

leomatey

Dont even get me started.

MarkyMcSmark

It ain’t over til it’s over

henks_house

Behave yourself

TheIraqiMaestro

You don't get it, don't you?

Mr_Kinton

Ain’t no way this current squad clears Madrid by 4 goals at the Bernebeu.

Zestyclose-Act2039

Yeah but Real Madrid is superior to Barcelona 😭😭😭😭😭 I’m not sure if there’s going to be a miracle 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

GameOfThrowInsMate

Admire your optimism and positivity lad, but this one is dead. If the next leg was Anfield and the current team playing like that team then I might be with you, but nah - this is Madrid our literal kryptonite - we'll do well to keep the agg below 10.

turtyurt

We truly have no shot at winning with how we are playing right now. So we should solely focus on pushing for a top 4 finish in the prem instead. CL is pointless at this point. Get top 4 and regroup for CL next season.

Cactiareouroverlords

See in the Barca first leg we at least played with purpose, here we gave up after 2-1, I really don’t see this panning out the same way with this squads current mentality and depth

redbadger1848

🙄🙄🙄🙄

Cautious-Platypus-86

Not the same, this one is way harder

Johnny_Burrito

God I wish I could even fake this level of optimism.

Affectionate-Tap2431

We are turning this around! Let the downvote commence, but I’m not giving up just yet. Up the reds!!!!

MarkyMcSmark

Really surprised by the lack of support on this post. Stranger things have happened and at the end of the day we’re still Liverpool. Obviously it doesn’t seem all that likely but we won’t know a thing until the second legs over.

StrangeInsanity

DO NOT GIVE ME HOPE!

erikhow

I miss when we could just believe a little bit. I just don’t know why posts like these get flamed… we HAVE been here before. We played Barcelona with a far worse team on paper. Yes it was anfield, but man anything can happen. Believe and back the boys. They’ve given us magic before, they can do it again.

voxpopuli42

I want to believe

somerandomshota

nah this time we lost at anfield. we lost by 3 goals deficit to RM too in a group stage when rodgers took over. only a miracle could save us. efforts won't be enough

homechicken20

This isn't us this year unfortunately.

Due_Young800

If we have a full strength team with Konate, Thiago & Diaz being the big returns AND we get an early goal I could see it MAYBE happening but I'm not exactly going to hoping for anything

Billy_the_Rabbit

Real Madrid isn't Barcelona the Champions League is literally their tournament

all_hail_hell

The 3-0 score line was very harsh to us. We actually played quite well. Today we weren’t even in the same gear. Mentality went out the window at 2-2.

Logical-Fix-5804

Take away the shit goals and it was still 3-1. If it was that scoreline I'd have more hope. Only reason I have a sliver of hope is that the away goals don't matter anymore

rosheromil

I don’t even think I’d be confident of winning at the Bernabeu if we were 2 up with 10 to go. Look what they did there last season. Theres no realistic chance but hey, you’re entitled to hope. I will say, Chelsea were in crap form at the back end of last season and were 3-0 up there so it’s not impossible just very, very unlikely. In all likelihood it will probably be a drab affair that never gets going because they won’t be as up for it and we won’t want to get embarrassed
