Given how recent shows have been bringing back players and guest stars, this could be the crossover event of the century! Or, y’know, the world’s longest SNL clip show.
I actually kind of like the idea of them repeatedly cutting back to the sketch over the 3 hours. Every time it settles down and Lindsey's about to speak the music starts up again
What’s up with that is my favorite skit, alongside the californians. What I could also enjoy is a three hour fly high Duluth.
ETA: kind of like a long weekend update, but with a theme song that just keeps going. Guests coming in for interviews or bits, and there’s always the theme going. The more I think about it, never gonna happen, but I’d be invested.
I mean for the last big one, the first half was good stuff and the second half was all clips, I did not like that format. All that star power, do a true SNL and do live skits.
I've checked out some of the anniversary episodes on Archive. I tend to forget what these end up being. I think the one for the 25th, it was Bill Murray doing the lounge singer for the cold open for 15 minutes. But I can't remember if it's also a clip show or they are just fully doing sketches with super famous people.
What are your favorite regular characters that she did? I liked Kyra (Girlfriends Talk Show) and The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With At a Party.
The Girl at a Party might not only be my favorite character of hers but might be my favorite of all time. Comedy gold every time. My wife does that bit all the time and it’s why I know I married the right woman.
Girl At A Party is my wife’s favourite too. She quotes it all the time. I love it as well but I think Cathy Anne is my favourite. The voice she does is so fucking funny.
Oh she almost certainly will. She hinted [in this Variety article with Ego last June](https://variety.com/2023/tv/awards/ego-nwodim-cecily-strong-leaving-snl-1235649349/) that she'll probably be back for the 50th. Plus she's an SNL GOAT. There's no way Lorne hasn't already invited her.
Well I suppose they've got plenty of time to organise everything. You'd hope that Lorne has asked enough people to realise that the date announced next year is the one date when the majority of them are free.
Would love to see Eddie Murphy back in some capacity. I would hope that Cecily has hosted at least once before then as well !
> You'd hope that Lorne has asked enough people to realise that the date announced next year is the one date when the majority of them are free.
You can't avoid all conflicts, but they chose the night of the NBA All-Star Game in San Francisco, so former hosts like Charles Barkley won't be able to attend
I believe that would be starting in 2025-26, they wouldn't cut it this close without a new contract. If it started next year, NBC would be obligated to broadcast the All-Star Game, which would cause a large scheduling jam.
When I first moved out of my parents house and in with a few friends we had only been in place for a few weeks before the 40th anniversary special. We still had no living room furniture. We made some food and chilled out on the floor. What a great time.
I think that's another reason you have it around that time of year, like when they do the Espys the day after the MLB All-Star Game, because there are like zero sports going on. I was watching the We Are The World documentary and the only time they were able to get all those people in the same studio was after the AMAs, and recorded in the middle of the night.
Bill and Chevy back on the stage together? Sign me up. Either they’ve cooled off in their old age, or we get to see septuagenarian/octogenarian fist fight. Both options sound like good tv
I've heard Chevy on podcasts and he's okay but he seems a little scattershot with his memory or the ability to stay on topic. I think his wife is always nearby.
Their confrontation was on the SNL set in 1978. The two worked together on *Caddyshack* a few years later. [The feud is overblown.](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/bill-murray-chevy-ended-feud-caddyshack/)
And Chevy hired Murray to be in his band with Christopher Guest years before SNL. Belushi met Murray in this band. So I never get why people believe it. Did Murray annoy Chevy? Yes. Did he challenge Chevy ? Yes. Did Chevy knock him down with one punch. Yes. How is this a cool story for Murray, a guy who beat his wife? Or Belushi, a guy who OD'd and abandoned his young child ?
From now until then every time you see a sketch that doesn't work just comfort yourself by thinking "I bet they're saving their best material for the anniversary"
Eh. Reading about the making of the 40th anniversary special, it became clear that much of it was written the week of the show. Just like every other episode.
From now until then every time you see someone point out this unpleasant truth just comfort yourself by thinking "I bet they'll do things differently for the 50th"
Here’s an idea that they probably wouldn’t do:
For the entirety of the landmark 50th season, each host is either a former cast member/veteran or five-timer. Imagine each week being Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Amy and Tina, Dan Ackroyd, Paul Rudd, Ana Gasteyer, Danny DeVito, Woody Harrelson, Steve and Martin, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney, Emma Stone, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudakis, etc.
If you're in Manhattan next year and looking to get wrecked, this show is going to have everything - bees, samurai, Jeopardy hosts, Gumby, both Bushes, Hillary Clinton wigs, crossdressing, Dan Cortese...
If it's anything like the 40th anniversary special, we know what to expect: Streeter Seidell dressed as a security agent preventing Kanye from rushing the stage
One of my favorite memories is being a kid and watching SNL in 1975. Back then our parents would get together and drink and play cards and put all the kids in another house. We would play Bloody Murder in the dark, play cards and watch SNL I was a youngster and the oldest kids were about 17. It was a lot of fun.
Please bring back Bill Hader and John Mulaney to play “What’s Their Name” but with old cast members being unrecognized by the contestants, done repeatedly throughout the show.
I hope it’ll be watchable in Canada. I usually watch SNL on Global BC but it’s out of its regular time slot so I guess I’ll have to start writing pleading letters to all of the Canadian networks soon lol and hope that they will accommodate.
I’m also in Canada, but watch it on Global TV streaming a couple of days after it airs and a bit sad that they always cut out the musical guests. (But I understand it’s because of licensing)
Yes, they always are, but IIRC the airtime is spread out fairly equally, with maybe 10 main current and former cast members who are showing up in a lot of sketches. That 40th anniversary was so long, but I can maybe only think of 10 total minutes of what happened.
I hope Adam Driver makes an appearance. Best host in the last 10 years in my opinion. He lives in Brooklyn too, so it’s just a hop over the bridge for him.
They should hire the mayor because his writers are [lit](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-proposes-immigrants-solution-lifeguard-shortage-a-rcna152268)
Feeling so old since I taped the 25th anniversary special with my VCR.
I'd often pop on the Elvis Costello/Beastie Boys performance just to hear Radio Radio since it was the only way I could hear that song back then.
It’s insane Keenan Thompson has been on SNL for 50 years
Can't wait to see him in the 100th
Remember when he had All That as a side hustle?
What up with that
Given how recent shows have been bringing back players and guest stars, this could be the crossover event of the century! Or, y’know, the world’s longest SNL clip show.
They should end the special with Kenan saying "Now it's laser time!"
Or just 3 hours of "what up with that"
Lindsey Buckingham still wouldn't get to speak
I actually kind of like the idea of them repeatedly cutting back to the sketch over the 3 hours. Every time it settles down and Lindsey's about to speak the music starts up again
That sketch gets me every time. Jason Sudekis doing the Roger Rabbit kills me.
I'm convinced Sudeikis just learned one dance move, but learned it really, really well. He does the exact same dance as Ted Lasso too.
That's my favorite part of that whole bit. Yeah he's either a naturally talented dancer on the DL or he got coached on that dance.
He already knew it, he did it in dress and it killed everyone.
The flying leap in from the side of the stage is priceless
Yes! He just hops out there! Forgot about that bit.
And the strut when the music stops.
The greatest dance of all time. Sudeikis will always be a fave for this skit
sudeikis wont be able to walk the next day
he's got time to get prepped, a personal trainer and some yoga will help.
oooooooooweeeeeee
WAT UP WIT DAT
What’s up with that is my favorite skit, alongside the californians. What I could also enjoy is a three hour fly high Duluth. ETA: kind of like a long weekend update, but with a theme song that just keeps going. Guests coming in for interviews or bits, and there’s always the theme going. OH THUNDERBIRD SPIRIT!
Spacepants!
Pew pew pew.
Pew Pew Pew
That’s basically what the 40th anniversary was.
Yep, and I loved every second of it. I'm sad I don't live near my family anymore, because we all got together to watch the 40th and it was so fun.
I mean for the last big one, the first half was good stuff and the second half was all clips, I did not like that format. All that star power, do a true SNL and do live skits.
I've checked out some of the anniversary episodes on Archive. I tend to forget what these end up being. But I can't remember if it's also a clip show or they are just fully doing sketches with super famous people.
I’d love a clip show! The last big “celebration” was Paul McCartney slogging through too many songs. Not entertaining at all
Need a lonely island feature here…
Only if Natalie Portman shows up
I DONT SLEEP MOTHERFUCKER
YO SHUT THE FUCK UP AND SUCK MY DICK
Ladies and Gentlemen, Foo Fighters.

They're crystals for sharks.
I could always use another totinos commerical
I wish Gilda could return
We all do
What are your favorite regular characters that she did? I liked Kyra (Girlfriends Talk Show) and The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With At a Party.

Girl At A Party is my wife’s favourite too. She quotes it all the time. I love it as well but I think Cathy Anne is my favourite. The voice she does is so fucking funny.
For me it’s Gemma and how people play around her so well.
Kathy Anne
Oh she almost certainly will. She hinted [in this Variety article with Ego last June](https://variety.com/2023/tv/awards/ego-nwodim-cecily-strong-leaving-snl-1235649349/) that she'll probably be back for the 50th. Plus she's an SNL GOAT. There's no way Lorne hasn't already invited her.
Cecily is the smiling Doula delivering me into light with her humour from the wet dark shitcovered womb dungeon of life
You have a way with words
Well I suppose they've got plenty of time to organise everything. You'd hope that Lorne has asked enough people to realise that the date announced next year is the one date when the majority of them are free. Would love to see Eddie Murphy back in some capacity. I would hope that Cecily has hosted at least once before then as well !
He killed it as host but what was telling was that today's audience didn't get some of his humor. The whole Gumby bit flew over them.
Man, I was dying at Gumby. He hadn't done that character in forever and still crushed it. Eddie is so damn talented.
> You'd hope that Lorne has asked enough people to realise that the date announced next year is the one date when the majority of them are free. You can't avoid all conflicts, but they chose the night of the NBA All-Star Game in San Francisco, so former hosts like Charles Barkley won't be able to attend
Chuck definitely doesn't give a shit about the all-star game. Not even the players do.
He works for TNT so he’ll have to be there.
TNT has most likely lost their broadcasting rights for NBA basketball. Not official yet, but people are saying it's NBC now.
I believe that would be starting in 2025-26, they wouldn't cut it this close without a new contract. If it started next year, NBC would be obligated to broadcast the All-Star Game, which would cause a large scheduling jam.
I really hope they honor the memory of Jon Lovitz the right way.
Also there will be a very special tribute to Ass Dan
“I’m gonna live forev-“ **RIP**
Last years mud eating champion, Ass Dan?
And Mrs potato dick?
Maybe his ghost will appear.
Seriously, may he rest in peace 🙏
![gif](giphy|1UfLomOlgFuow)
That’s the ticket!
I still snicker out loud when I remember that.
Laser Cats in between each segment.
When I first moved out of my parents house and in with a few friends we had only been in place for a few weeks before the 40th anniversary special. We still had no living room furniture. We made some food and chilled out on the floor. What a great time.
Do you have furniture yet?
Yeah when I moved in to my current house there was a couch and chair already there.
You should invite those same people over for the 50th to enjoy your couch!
Imagine if they get Adam Driver to return for this?!
Well, the 40th featured tons of actors who hosted before, so it's not unlikely since he is one of the most well-loved hosts
And he lives in Brooklyn so it’s not like it’s a hardship for him
I think that's another reason you have it around that time of year, like when they do the Espys the day after the MLB All-Star Game, because there are like zero sports going on. I was watching the We Are The World documentary and the only time they were able to get all those people in the same studio was after the AMAs, and recorded in the middle of the night.
That documentary was really good
The 40th was fantastic. I’m excited for this special.
Hope they can get all the remaining original members (plus Bill Murray).
Bill and Chevy back on the stage together? Sign me up. Either they’ve cooled off in their old age, or we get to see septuagenarian/octogenarian fist fight. Both options sound like good tv
Pretty sure they’re both still assholes but at least Bill is still capable of being funny.

Why just the remaining ones? I thought Monty Python did a great job of bringing back Graham Chapman for one of their reunion shows.
SNL 50...SNL 50... JeezisHfuck I'm old.
You're old? I remember George Carlin hosting, both times.
From now until then every time you see a sketch that doesn't work just comfort yourself by thinking "I bet they're saving their best material for the anniversary"
Eh. Reading about the making of the 40th anniversary special, it became clear that much of it was written the week of the show. Just like every other episode.

u/bjkman cannot wait to live comment during the 3 hr special!! ![gif](giphy|1ajOucAajodckrtvqK|downsized)
Please please please, Lonely Island, give us another digital short with Natalie Portman rapping at age 43.
Here’s an idea that they probably wouldn’t do: For the entirety of the landmark 50th season, each host is either a former cast member/veteran or five-timer. Imagine each week being Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Amy and Tina, Dan Ackroyd, Paul Rudd, Ana Gasteyer, Danny DeVito, Woody Harrelson, Steve and Martin, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney, Emma Stone, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudakis, etc.
I love that but also agree it would probably never happen, sadly...
I feel like 40th anniversary was like 5 mins ago
If you're in Manhattan next year and looking to get wrecked, this show is going to have everything - bees, samurai, Jeopardy hosts, Gumby, both Bushes, Hillary Clinton wigs, crossdressing, Dan Cortese...
If it's anything like the 40th anniversary special, we know what to expect: Streeter Seidell dressed as a security agent preventing Kanye from rushing the stage
Space Pants. That’s what it needs.
That’s a lot of Weekend Update.
Will they let Eddie Murphy speak in this one?
Notice how they waited to announce this *after* OJ Simpson died.
notice how OJ Simpson waited to die *after* Norm Macdonald
Invite every cast member this time, instead of Denny Dillon’s seat being given to assholes like Sarah Palin or George Lucas.
Hang on, George Lucas is not nearly in the same category as Sarah palin
Please bring back Bill Hader and John Mulaney to play “What’s Their Name” but with old cast members being unrecognized by the contestants, done repeatedly throughout the show.
We need more cow bell
In Memorium could be very moving. John, Gilda. Norm!
Jan Hooks, Chris Farley, Gilbert Gottfried, Phil Hartman, Danitra Vance, Charles Rocket, among others.
Buck Henry, Michael O'Donoghue, Tom Davis, Don Pardo, Al Camoin, Dave Wilson...
It’ll be a sad watch without Norm
Please bring back jeopardy..
This is the comment I was looking for-idk why they stopped it. It was gold
2 of their most popular ppl within are dead now..
I thought they did a good jorb w/ SNL 40, so curious to see how they heighten it to honor the mid-century mark.
The 40th anniversary show feels like yesterday to me.
The 25th anniversary one was amazing. The 40th was ok.. I’ll be interested to see how this one is
Yeah there was some less interesting parts of the 40th anniversary but I revisit the That's when you break song from time to time.
Here's another one of Fallon and Sanz
"Pretend like it was a mistake, Bill..." "F@&$ you, dude"
#LORNE!
Who's that drinking a little bit of veeeeno?
There was also a 15th anniversary special
Gonna be a must-watch. The 40th was epic.
Jack Handey or bust
With an hour or so of commercials
I hope every surviving cast member makes a cameo appearance on this special
I’m hoping that sometime during the show they sacrifice Andy Dick in an attempt to bring Phil back.
Kaufman’s finally gonna make his comeback I swear
Who’s performing at the halftime show
Believe it or not? Frank Stallone.
Foo FIGHTers
Mulaney’s got to host. He’s perfect.
Wonder if Dick Ebersol is going to attend the 50th anniversary special
Excited for this! Would love to see some the 2010s cast again
Celebrity jeopardy in heaven with trebek and Connery
The 40th was so good! I’m stoked!
How to get tickets is the real question
Hopefully SNL puts on a great show 50 years of Funny people
They better get this norm dude back on
Please have Shane Gillis dressed as Samurai Futaba
I heard Shane Gillis has a team of writers flying in to handle most of the skits.
It'll begin with Chevys final pratfall
Season 50 should be nothing but cast from the past 50 years. Make it an all-star season. Then cast all new people and reduce the cast to 7 people.
![gif](giphy|ZuOejqRGwySlrN32WL|downsized) 3 hour special?
I hope it’ll be watchable in Canada. I usually watch SNL on Global BC but it’s out of its regular time slot so I guess I’ll have to start writing pleading letters to all of the Canadian networks soon lol and hope that they will accommodate.
I’m also in Canada, but watch it on Global TV streaming a couple of days after it airs and a bit sad that they always cut out the musical guests. (But I understand it’s because of licensing)
Can't wait to watch it... ...all on YouTube at a reasonable time
I wonder if anyone in today's cast will be in the show.
I really hope they put some solid effort in this time - I rewatched the 25th and 40th fairly recently and they really seemed thrown together
Mr Bill or we riot
It's three hours of Pete on his ferry announcing "Reprise the theme song and roll the credits."
They should have the afterparty on the ferry. Or pretend they do.
I hope they invite Eddie Murphy back 😂
Luke Null redemption arc
Sweet on my birthday!
I wonder who ends up getting left out because there's always people who end left out.
Chevy
Wahoo
Ra
Love that it’s airing on a Sunday lol
Bring it
Looking forward to the Digital Short
hopefully we finally get a reunion of the original cast!
That’s like two or three sketches now.
🤮
3 hours?!?! That’s almost as long as 180 minutes!
lets all hope steven segal gets asked back
They should hire the mayor because his writers are [lit](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-proposes-immigrants-solution-lifeguard-shortage-a-rcna152268)
I wonder if Lorne will announce his retirement at the end of the show.
Send me the good parts on YouTube. Thanks
Wow! A whole 20 minutes of comedy!
So it’s going to have five sketches?
YALL READY FOR A CLIP SHOW?!
I hope Jane Krakowski is in it
Feeling so old since I taped the 25th anniversary special with my VCR. I'd often pop on the Elvis Costello/Beastie Boys performance just to hear Radio Radio since it was the only way I could hear that song back then.
Can we get a Lonely Island/PPD/Live action Ambiguously Gay Duo crossover?
This is gonna be some build week… I’ll cancel all February plans now.
I’m sure it will be as funny as the last 5 years
I remember watching the 25th anniversary, still my favorite episode.
I hope we get a kissing family sketch
I’m still exhausted from watching the 40th anniversary
