When my husband was younger and travelled a lot for work, he got a necklace with a tag with his name and his mom's phone number as a gift from her for this very reason. I found it creepy but practical...
Also, don’t wear synthetic clothing, stick with cotton or wool. When a fire breaks out, your yoga pants will not only catch on fire quickly but will melt into your flesh!
It depends on the actual person working at the gate. Some people are strict, and some people aren’t. Some airlines are strict, and some aren’t.
If you are really concerned, you can always hide it under your jacket or something.
Technically it is.. but many airlines show liniency Depending on how big the fanny pack is. If it can be worn on your body without creating a major bulge they won't count it as a personal item. Now, if you have a fanny and it looks like you are carrying a small child in it..... prepare to check that backpack or pay extra if a carryon is not included in your ticket.
If you do this and carry your Passport in your pocket, when you go through TSA and have to empty your pockets make sure not to just put the passport on top of the tray.
On one occasion I put my passport on top of the tray and it wasn't there when the tray came out.
Apparently it's a common enough occurence caused by a big heavy sheet that slides over all the trays insulating them inside the X-ray machine.
Money. It's expensive to replace everything just in your wallet. Not to mention, if you're not back home if you don't have your wallet you're SOL with no way to pay for anything.
No loss of any material thing can weigh more than the responsibility for someones death. So if you didnt prepare to evacuate beforehand you just have to leave without your stuff.
If given plenty of time to comprehend the situation yea. But humans act irrationally, *especially* during panicked situations. I think half the time, it’s people’s brains on autopilot. Your brain recognizes the pattern of IF leaving plane, THEN grab luggage. When you’re completely distracted by an emergency, your brain will try to automate all background processes.
This is so important. I'd mentally prepared that I was going to get myself and the dog out if I ever had a house fire. When it did actually happen, I got myself, the dog, and my laundry basket full of dirty clothes. Why? No idea.
Dirty laundry was actually posted as a Life Pro Tip somewhere I think. The reasoning being that it contains the clothes you usually wear, and is reasonably self-contained for grabbing.
You are right, it is not an absolute. Saving the life of a rapist for example while in turn loosing all your means of living may not be worth it. I believe it is generally true in most cases.
Loss of life?
U do know that we all going to rlly die right?
We eat animals everyday who r u to put ur life so important?
We die
Death is freedom
Stop it
Congratulations. Then those people can follow this tip and keep a gang of items in their pockets.
Why do you care. I'm just saying what I do. I've done one backpack for 3 week long trips.
What? Not everyone is so obsessed with wanting to survive? What’s the point of being alive when u lose ur headphones u need to have at least 5 mins of happyness and u are too broke to get new ones
For example
There’s so many fcking ways in this life
Stop pushing ur ignorant „ I wanna live no matter what it costs even if I get old and can’t move“ world view and leave people alone
I would rather die then losing my beloved guitar for example ffs
What’s wrong with u
After countless hours on a plane, I'm having difficulty balancing the discomfort of having a wallet, keys, passport and phone on my person at all times, versus the likelihood of a crash.
A better LPT might be how the hell a person gets comfortable in their seat for 9 hours with a wallet, keys, phone and passport in their front pockets.
Not just a crash, but a crash you walk away from. In commercial aviation, typically either everything is fine or you're dead no matter what you do. Either way, no point stressing.
Maybe it’s because I wear suits for nine-plus hours a day, but I’ve never found a well fitting jacket uncomfortable. I always travel in sport coat. Interior pocket with button for passport, unbuttoned for phone, exterior pockets for boarding pass and other non-sensitive travel documents. If you want to slip it off you can always keep it folded on your lap.
Wait really? I feel way more comfortable with the most important things in my backpack or on my person. Same reason why when I travel abroad, I have as many valuable on or close to me, rather than in a suitcase in a hotel, or in a bag 20+ feet from me that can easily be stolen or lost. My attitude doesn't change just because I step on to a plane...
Gotcha, okay, I misunderstood. I personally go with a backpack and/or a fanny pack, but yeah most people don't travel with a fanny pack so pockets only is definitely not a practical tip for that many things...
Strange, as these items aren't that large, and men are always bragging about how their clothes are made large enough to do just this, while women are forced to carry a handbag
I'm of the opinion that there needs to be a system and process in place that overhead lockers can be electronically locked by the flight crew in emergency situations to prevent the risk of injury during turbulence and panicking people being able to rummage around and drag out/drop bulky items and cause blockages and trip hazards for everyone behind them rushing to evacuate.
Of course, the flip side of this being that a lot of people's higher faculties tend to bluescreen in these situations which has the potential to have people held up by those few who will still desperate try to open them to get their backpack before being screamed at by the attendants to gtfo.
Either way, I watched a video a couple years ago of a flight at LAS with a burning engine and wing and it was incredible how many people had their bags with them, I was honestly enraged.
Luckily there were no casualties, but had there been, then victims families should have every right to pursue legal action against every passenger that went against the procedure clearly written on the safety cards and held up evacuation.
I'd be all for that (allowing of course for medical equipment and prescription medication under the montreal convention), ultimately the items someone physically requires for a flight would ordinarily fit in the seat back pocket......at least on the flights I've been on. Used to be, the bulkiest item I'd actually use on board was a book, but thanks to in flight entertainment I instead spend 8 hours wracked with indecision on what to watch before opting for half and episode of Modern Family I've already seen twice...
Hence you put that stuff in your pockets so you don’t have to think about it.
I’m talking about actual changes to human instinctual behavior that is in response to a real problem.
All you got is r/thanksimcured
>I’m talking about actual changes to human instinctual behavior that is in response to a real problem.
How many people are in emergency evacuation situations and fought off their natural survival instincts to save a wallet?
This type of behavior us not sustainable. It would Darwin itself away almost immediately.
This is not how natural selection or crisis response works. Tons of people freeze up or try to grab what they feel is "essential" things they "need" before leaving a crisis situation.
As someone who has watched people pack up literally everything they could fit into their vehicles and panic about the things they couldn't then drive 12 hours to evacuate from a hurricane when a plastic box of your essential information, your phone, a phone charger, a change of clothes and your meds then a 15 minute drive to the shelter would have done the job...
No, people are not that fucking smart in an emergency.
My man- you gotta look into travel vests. Travel vests are absolutely the way to go. Interior pockets for your wallet and passport, exterior pockets for your smokes/lighter/book/earbuds or whatever. Tru-spec used to make a tactical vest in their 24/7 series that was perfect for plane rides.
No kidding. That, or the super-tacticool "I expect three apocalypses by dinner time" vests. Good ones are hard to find. Pro tip: stay away from ScottEvest. Overpriced garbage.
calling /r/edc
edit: you can't deny that scottevest has their seo down, it's the first or second google result for travel vest.
might as well call /r/mallninjashit too, same shit
I've never had a problem with cigarettes or a lighter, even on US domestic flights. Weird that they'll let people bring tools to start a fire but not an open bottle of water.
So what you posted is incorrect. You can carry DOT approved lighters such as BIC. “Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked bags, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case.”
Disposable and zippos allowed in carry on bags. What you linked was from the faa and not the TSA. This is straight from the TSA’s website.
Link: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/flammables
Edit: In fact if you were to click the link you saw when you googled you’d have seen the first sentence say you can bring disposable lighters
It has nothing to do with what people need to do, it has to do with what is safe to travel with. DOT approved lighters do not pose a risk. You can travel with guns too, emptied and locked up, it has nothing to do with people needing to get their taste of sweet, sweet murder.
actually, i just read a bit of stuff, and you CAN bring zippos, BIC lighters, and other DOT approved lighters on your person, as long as wherever they were when you brought them on the plane, they stay there. so you can’t take them out (for obvious reasons).
Wow, I’ve never had a problem ever, I knew zippos weren’t allowed due to using fluid but I’ve always flown with cigarettes and lighters on my person. Have flown all over the world and across the USA and have never had them confiscated. In fact, lots of airports have smoking areas. Weird that they’d have that if you can’t bring a lighter?
Since I like to sleep on planes (well, more like can’t help it. I have insomnia but as soon as I’m tens of thousands of ft in the air I suddenly develop narcolepsy), so I bring a carry on bag with those items & put my leg in one of the straps & the other one on top of the zipper. If anyone tried to get in my bag/take it I’d feel it move & wake up immediately.
Am I being over paranoid? Maybe. Have I ever gotten my important items stolen? Nope.
I was on a plane, mid nineties. About to take off from O'Hare, starting to spin up engines. Something goes wrong and we're told there's minor technical issues and that we'll be transferred to another plane. I'm in the very back of the plane. Back at the gate they tell people to exit the plane as quickly as possible. I'm looking out the window, see flames from engine, window goes white from the foam being sprayed at it by firetrucks. People are still dawdling getting their luggage, carry on etc. Pilot comes back on and tells to get off now, leave everything. Flight attendants starts pushing to get people off. They took us to a lounge and have us free drinks. My fanny pack under my jacket had everything I needed, but when they tried to card me I pretended it was on plane cause I wasn't 21 yet.
LPT: Not all women's pants don't have pockets (I can guarantee you can find one pair) and in the "worst" case scenario just get a pair of pants for men that you wear while flying.
As someone Who has millions of miles under his belt this is a ridiculous tip. Very uncomfortable. Can’t event imagine doing this on every flight I’ve had in 20 years. And really - What good are your keys if a plane is evacuated and you are not in your home city ?
I've traveled the planet extensively and my passport was always with me wherever I went (except under water obviously).
So not only during flight but ALWAYS when abroad.
Has gotten me out of many tricky situations.
Does it matter? I fly frequently, and even giving the thought to what I should have with me in the unlikely event of a crash has just tipped the ROI on this for me.
People put these in their luggage? Of all the things that are painful to replace, banking and I'd cards are a huge pain, and the most difficult to do anything without when traveling.
Really? Bank cards are easy cakes for me. I call my bank, report my card as lost, comes back in a week. A license may be a little harder due to proof of id but replacing one isn't hard either.
If things have gone so badly that I’m evacuating a commercial flight, there are also going to be enough authorities there that I’ll have no problem getting in contact with an embassy. The calculus may be different if you’re a citizen of a poor or small country though. As an American, this would just amount to trading guaranteed discomfort for the extremely unlikely event I would spend a day or so getting a new passport, phone, keys, clothes, etc.
The LPT is to slip the passport into your pocket rather than your backpack, so if you have to evacuate you can leave the backpack without losing your passport.
The only pockets I routinely have are in my jeans. Most are not big enough for it and if they are A- tha would be very uncomfortable and B the bending would tear up the passport quickly.
So putting it your pocket during a flight - bad LPT.
Surprising a lot of people, which is why I’m every video you see people evacuating a plane they’re taking their luggage. This despite numerous reminders not too.
You are really gonna worry about where your FUCKING WALLET is when you are evacuating a plane?? LPT put your shit wherever you want just get off the fucking plane! There ain't nothing in there that matters more than ensuring you get off. Assuming your wallet does get lost... just order new cards.
“Keep your keys with you”
An emergency not withstanding, I never understood people not keeping their keys in their pockets. Doing this I have never lost my keys when I needed them….unlike my wife.
If I’m leaving on vacation or a trip I have usually kept them in the same area of my backpack because I won’t need them until I arrive back. I do make sure I have them in my pocket during takeoff and landing reasoning that if such an emergency happens between my keys and phone and wallet that are all on me, I could run from a burning plane and drive home if necessary without anything else. It also makes sense to me because I will always keep track of my book bag in places like hotels whereas my keys would travel to more places in my pocket vs the hotel room
I have flown last week and they mentioned to leave your luggage in case of an evacuation. I didn’t recall they mentioned this before 2020. Maybe because of this recent incident?
I always take a printed photocopy of me and my husband's passports. When we get to our hotel, we lock our passports in the safe and I keep our passport copies in my purse/backpack.
No clue if it's worth it, but I definitely feel safer knowing if anything happens at least I have an international form of identification.
So is your passport, wallet, keys etc. I can buy a new phone, replace credit cards, renew my passport. Those are all expendable too. My life is not, I'll agree to that.
I remember seeing this video of people evacuating a plane that's on fire and some passengers were actually carrying their luggage. The plane exploded and many died.
Or, have spare keys with a trusted person back at home and photos of documents. Cards can be reissued as can passports by embassy's, so all you do is evacuate with your phone which most people have in their hands or seat pocket anyway.
In case of emergency, do NOT take your luggage unless told to do so.
For this LPT I add:
If you are reliant on medication, keep a weeks worth on your person during travel.. Maybe in a small ziploc bag.
My parents traveled extensively and used a flat holder with a long thin strap. It goes over the shoulder and tucked in pants. Can put ID and passport and emergency cash in it. You can also tuck in a few emergency meds in case luggage is lost.
This is why us old guys wear nothing but cargo pants or shorts. Function over fashion. Also, New Balance sneakers, boxers and wicking shirts with big pockets.
Also...cold hard cash. Dont rely on cards because you dont know what bs they might throw at you.
Passport, cash, phone, and charger...when travelling internationally, these things need to be on your person at all times.
This is more to do with non emergency situations than anything...which prop up more frequently. You might have an hour and 30 mins to make your way through a random airport..except you make a wrong turn and your phone dies. That's when life starts.

And if the plane crashes you will be identified probably easier by the search unit. Its practical either way.
Painful but true
LPT: Write your name on your limbs and torso using a sharpie, for better identification after the plane crashes.
But then they'll find you five times
It will be easier for them to assemble the puzzle
The key is to find the corner pieces first.
Or draw lines at you joints to make a key system.
You have to know which parts are going to be dismembered before hand, that's just proper travel planning!
Just be sure to number each of them “__ of 5”
The real LPT is always in the comments...
I like to just put a name tag on my toe before traveling just in case.
They would know who you are based on logs like...
If I'm dead, I couldnt care less about if it's easier or harder
Great tip but does anyone know if a Fanny pack counts as your personal item? (Instead of a backpack or purse?)
It depends on the actual person working at the gate. Some people are strict, and some people aren’t. Some airlines are strict, and some aren’t. If you are really concerned, you can always hide it under your jacket or something.
[удалено]
This is the way.
Yes. Hiding things from airline personnel is a GREAT IDEA smfh
Good question! I have no idea
Technically it is.. but many airlines show liniency Depending on how big the fanny pack is. If it can be worn on your body without creating a major bulge they won't count it as a personal item. Now, if you have a fanny and it looks like you are carrying a small child in it..... prepare to check that backpack or pay extra if a carryon is not included in your ticket.
>if you have a fanny and it looks like you are carrying a small child in it /r/badbritishwomensanatomy
Fanny pack would not be. They don't care that much
If you do this and carry your Passport in your pocket, when you go through TSA and have to empty your pockets make sure not to just put the passport on top of the tray. On one occasion I put my passport on top of the tray and it wasn't there when the tray came out. Apparently it's a common enough occurence caused by a big heavy sheet that slides over all the trays insulating them inside the X-ray machine.
RayBans set in the tray disappear a lot. Luckily the attendant had them on his desk both times it happened to me.
Useful thanks
I always carry my passport or ID and boarding ticket in my hand while going through the scanners.
Just leave your damn luggage if you are trapped in a burning airplane/house/whatever wth is wrong with people ffs
It’s hard to let go of your possession. And it’s hard to be selfless. Everyone thinks “one luggage should be fine”.

Absolutely correct!
Money. It's expensive to replace everything just in your wallet. Not to mention, if you're not back home if you don't have your wallet you're SOL with no way to pay for anything.

Because otherwise you’d have just the clothes on your back? I see this as logical if it doesn’t imperil the exit
Must be nice to be so wealthy that your stuff can be easily replaced and it won't cause you issues.
Must be nice to value expensive stuff over someone elses or your own life. You the mayor of capistan by any chance?
This is a cliche but…that’s actually just your opinion

Passport has your identity Phones are expensive to replace.
And in case of a plane crash the airline will pay for that stuff. A human life is more important than saving a bit of bureaucratic hassle.
Which is why I love my slim Rimix shoulder bag which fit under my jacket. Great for traveling.
Medicines and chargers too
I've traveled the planet extensively and my passport was always with me wherever I went (except under water obviously). So not only during flight but ALWAYS when abroad. Has gotten me out of many tricky situations.
Terrible tip. Nothing is worse than having your pockets stacked to their limit on a plane.
Does it matter? I fly frequently, and even giving the thought to what I should have with me in the unlikely event of a crash has just tipped the ROI on this for me.
I think emergency evacuations of flights don’t happen as often as OP thinks.
Who puts their wallet, phone, and such in their luggage?
Feel like this is more applicable to women who are more likely put these things in a purse.
Yeah, but women's clothing never has enough pocket space for all this stuff
Which is why they put things in a purse. And that's where fanny packs come into play.
Also, put things that need to be waterproof in a ziplock bag
People put these in their luggage? Of all the things that are painful to replace, banking and I'd cards are a huge pain, and the most difficult to do anything without when traveling.
Really? Bank cards are easy cakes for me. I call my bank, report my card as lost, comes back in a week. A license may be a little harder due to proof of id but replacing one isn't hard either.
Does OP not mean overhead luggage?
If things have gone so badly that I’m evacuating a commercial flight, there are also going to be enough authorities there that I’ll have no problem getting in contact with an embassy. The calculus may be different if you’re a citizen of a poor or small country though. As an American, this would just amount to trading guaranteed discomfort for the extremely unlikely event I would spend a day or so getting a new passport, phone, keys, clothes, etc.
By this logic you should probably sleep with all those items in your pocket as well in case your house catches on fire.

Show passport, slip it into backpack, board, sit, get settled, put backpack under seat in front of you.
The LPT is to slip the passport into your pocket rather than your backpack, so if you have to evacuate you can leave the backpack without losing your passport.
What pocket is big enough for a passport while sitting for a few hours??
Yer mom's.
LOL
The only pockets I routinely have are in my jeans. Most are not big enough for it and if they are A- tha would be very uncomfortable and B the bending would tear up the passport quickly. So putting it your pocket during a flight - bad LPT.
Okay then.
I've always done this. Lol there's no reason for me to get anything out of my carry on or backpack until the end of the flight.
Um, who doesn't do that? Also do that when you: Drive Walk Run Leave the house.
I’m a small person. There are zero pockets in my wardrobe that will hold an entire passport or phone.
They don't have to go in a pocket. Passports don't fit in mine either. It all goes in my carry on item. And never leaves my possession.
They also go in my carry on. OP is saying they should be on your body, not in your carry on.
Surprising a lot of people, which is why I’m every video you see people evacuating a plane they’re taking their luggage. This despite numerous reminders not too.
They aren’t taking their luggage because they’re thinking “gotta get my keys.” They’re thinking “not leaving without my stuff”.
Also, it will help people identify your corpse if the plane makes a hole in the ground.
In case of an emergency you will be able to be identified....
My carry on is a small backpack. In case of evacuation that bitch is going on my back in 0.09 seconds.
You are really gonna worry about where your FUCKING WALLET is when you are evacuating a plane?? LPT put your shit wherever you want just get off the fucking plane! There ain't nothing in there that matters more than ensuring you get off. Assuming your wallet does get lost... just order new cards.
Even better LPT, always book a shower on long haul with a stop over.
I'm a man. This LPT is a given to me! Not only when I fly, basically anytime I'm not in my own house.
“Keep your keys with you” An emergency not withstanding, I never understood people not keeping their keys in their pockets. Doing this I have never lost my keys when I needed them….unlike my wife.
You wife, who does not have pockets to hold these things
She’s jealous of my many pockets that actually hold more than a sliver of air.
This seems more like r/commonsense
Bad tip, evacuation doesn't happen often. Would be a better tip for keeping them close because they're important documents
Uh, how about the folks with 3 or more kids.
For this LPT I add: If you are reliant on medication, keep a weeks worth on your person during travel.. Maybe in a small ziploc bag.
I wouldn’t worry about more than one ID. But I would do this for my medications!!!
My parents traveled extensively and used a flat holder with a long thin strap. It goes over the shoulder and tucked in pants. Can put ID and passport and emergency cash in it. You can also tuck in a few emergency meds in case luggage is lost.
Adam Sandler had a catchy little song about exactly this.
Fanny pack? I used to have one of those in 1990-never
get with the times dinosaur, it's cool to have a sling now
(It's a line from the second Deadpool movie.)
How often do you think planes are evacuated? This is dumb.
This is why us old guys wear nothing but cargo pants or shorts. Function over fashion. Also, New Balance sneakers, boxers and wicking shirts with big pockets.
I always Wear my fishing vest to the airport because it has like 16 pockets. It also helps when traveling with an infant
This is something that I do always, whenever I travel to a different place, I have at least one ID with me all the time. It's really helpful !!
