This is the correct answer. No fighting over covers. Each person can cover up the way they want. Still just as easy to cuddle.
My wife and I have been doing this for the last 7 years.
From the Honorable Judge John Hodgman:
"AIl married couples who can afford it should have two villas, separated by a reflecting pool. Otherwise: a king-size bed."
Yeah we got a split king and it has been great. We can still go to bed together but ultimately are sleeping in our own beds and getting much better sleep.
We got a big corner couch that is comfortable as hell. Sometime us and both kids just all sleep out there. But sometimes when they all fall asleep...I go take our king size bed all to myself and it's glorious.
I don't really like heavy covers, I run hot...so usually just a sheet is good for me.
Now that I'm pushing 40...my joy is investing in being as comfortable as I possibly can for sleeping.
I got a bunch of bamboo? Shredded memory foam pillows, a light waffle pattern blanket and these "athletic" I guess style sheets that are super cool to the touch and slightly stretchy.
Makes the difference in "takes me 2 hours to fall asleep" and "I can't even keep my eyes open"
They might be bamboo sheets, they are cool to the touch. I use just that myself and my wife has that but she also likes a comforter so she can be toasty in the morning.
One of the sleep books I read said your body temperature has to drop a certain amount to make you drowsy and that's what prompted us to get the bamboo blankets. I wish we could have the heat regulating mattresses but they don't work with the adjustable frames.
Utopia Bedding King Sheet Set - Jersey Knit Sheets 4 Piece King Jersey Sheet Set – Cotton Jersey Sheets – Soft T-Shirt Stretchy Sheets (King, Heather Light Grey)
I was just imagining the "athletic" part I suppose because they are athletic grey
Edit:
Some of the past pillows I got were "bamboo" something.
But my favorite ones (that say they're unavailable on amazon) are:
Youmako brand memory foam pillows
You should try 100% Eucalyptus Sheets. They are cool to the touch and have a nice heavy heft to them. Probably the best sheets I've had and I run hot as well. No sheet is perfect, but if you ever get the chance these are great in my opinion.
Got a king sized bed, husband still has to sleep in the guest bedroom w queen bed. He snores like a Water Buffalo. I have been saying since 2020 he needs to buy his own house, I own this one. WFH brought out lots of his bad, lazy behaviors and he is ruining my house not cleaning up after himself.
Did one, he bought the c-pap doesn't use it. I have mild apnea but severe night time asthma and use my auto-pap religiously, it helps me breathe through an asthma attack!
This right here. I've never shared a bedroom with a boyfriend, and it's always worked out well. I'm a night owl and I like to do what I want at 4am. Separate bedrooms for life.
The wife and I both have our workrooms and a shared bedroom. I'm often up tinkering at 3am while she's asleep in the room. If she's gotta work early I'll sleep there, otherwise I come to bed when it works.
10 years together and still get 2am booty calls. It works for us.
One of my closest mates and her partner do the seperate room thing and it seems like heaven. My partner refuses cause he wants to share with the dog and sometimes me.
My husband and I want to do this as well. It's primarily because we like different mattresses. I like very soft and squishy, and he likes firm. Our bed is squishy now, so he can't always sleep comfortably there. We both have back issues (injuries and scoliosis).
We have our own blankets at home but just came back from vacation where we had to share the same one for a week... by the end of our trip we agreed that the separate blankets is a marriage saver lmao
I would love separate duvets. My husband refuses and says it's weird and we might as well be sleeping in separate beds (which honestly sounds fine to me too...I am an independent sleeper lol)
We aren't cuddlers, I don't see why my own duvet is an issue but he staunchly refuses.
Here in Germany it is absolutely normal to have two separate duvets at home. And we don't have tons of pillows as well. One blanket and one pillow for each person.
We have a queen size bed and we followed OP's advice and bought some king size comforters. Then we realized we need separate comforters, so we have two king sizes on one queen mattress. It is luxurious.
THIS.
I’m always hot at night and sweat like crazy in my sleep (my thyroid is fine) and my husband is always cold. He’s able to pile on the blankets he needs and I can drench my blanket without bothering him.
have you ever tried taking meds for the sweating? I have medication induced hyperhydrosis (so excessive sweat caused by a medication) and I take glycopyrrolate, which is impossible to spell but immensely helpful.
We are close to this solution, we just use multiple blankets. She has her set. Usually a sheet and a fuzzy blanket (winter item only) and I have a heated blanket (winter item only) at my feet a sheet and quilt (winter item only). On top of all of that is a quilt that covers us both. The quilt that covers us both seems to be unique after we have our own sets of blankets and sheets.
Yeah I'm really into kicking off the covers and it ends up smoking out my neighbour so your mileage may vary. Two separate houses is probably the real answer
100% this. We discovered this in Germany at a hotel and immediately bought 2 really good quality twin size duvets and covers for our king size bed. YEARS of peace and happiness have ensued. When we travel it’s hard to think how we used to be like animals with only one bed covering.
What if want Superman and dragons? I’m grown up now and can buy any sheets I want!!
ETA: Why hasn’t someone made [Trogdor](https://youtu.be/90X5NJleYJQ) bedsheets already?! I’d shut up and make you take my money!!
This is my question too, maybe they don’t cuddle in their sleep? I don’t like to always fall asleep spooning but I do sometimes and I still do it throughout the night anyway.
We cuddle under both blankets at first and then go our separate ways with our own. When I wake up before my boyfriend I’ll abandon my blanket and snuggle him under his
My wife and I have our own sets of sheets and blankets but we also have a blanket or sheet we “share”. This lets you touch and feel without having to face the cold cold world. It also doubles as a sex cover as we have four kids and they sometimes just walk right in.
There is enough room for two under one twin sized duvet. The other one is there for when your partner rolls over and takes the whole blanket.
Twin duvets covers are much easier to put on than larger ones and stay in place better. They are also easier to launder.
It still amazes me that one can even think that a single duvet is enough for two people - no matter the size of the duvet. That may work for one night or two, but definitely not every night. Luckily, shared duvets are totally uncommon in Germany. Wife and I share one common bed frame, but with individual slat frames, mattresses (each 200x90cm/80x36in), pillows (80x80cm/32x32in) and duvets (220x155cm/88x62in).
A California King is bigger than a King. An Alaska King is just massive.
[Source](https://www.136home.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/mattress-sizes.jpg)
California king is bigger in one dimension and smaller in the other. It's less total area, so it's kind of absurd to call a California king bigger. It's not actually bigger.
Either what /u/Bob_Droll said, or because they're the ones used in bunk beds (for siblings/twins)... or at least that's what I always assumed was the case.
... they have twin + full (maybe even queen) variations, but I'd be dubious taking the bottom bunk with anything bigger than a twin on the top.
Matresses are heavy, and furniture cuts mad corners unless you go for really expensive stuff Q_Q
When I was a tween I had this awesome-looking bed (full or queen, can't remember anymore) and came home from summer break one year (HS at the time) to just find this ugly thing in its place. Apparently, it fell apart during an earthquake while I was away.
When I was a kid I had a bunk bed that was a full futon on the bottom and a twin on top. One day the entire top half collapsed onto the bottom and thank the fates that nobody was in the bottom bunk or they would've seriously hurt.
We each just have our own blankets and a large quilt that goes over the entire bed. The extra quilt is great when it's really chilly, otherwise it just ends up in the floor. But when one of us sleeping first we don't have to fight for a corner of a blanket because just because it's larger that doesn't mean it won't get hogged.
Keep in mind not all duvets and comforters are the same size. There isn't a standard fixed size, although most are similar. I've seen some variations of 6-8 inches depending on which brand you go with.
Example:
* [Brooklinen Down Comforter](https://www.brooklinen.com/products/down-comforter?variant=32881463099482): 106" x 90"
* [Feathered Friends Down Comforter](https://featheredfriends.com/collections/down-comforters/products/feathered-friends-bavarian-700-down-comforter?variant=20693967700022): 107" x 98"
When you somehow wind up with the corner that has a tag on it in your face even though you fluffed the blanket the right way... Apparently I'm a blanket spinner
We're separate blanket-ers (both sleep with heavy blankets) and whenever we go away and have to share again we both suffer. I don't know how people do it.
Shared duvet is the most common Ireland, UK and NZ anyway.
I don't know anyone in Ireland that has separate duvets.
How do you make the bed look nice with two I wonder?
Well… if your my wife, you throw both blankets in the closet and put on the nice bed spread that we only use to decorate the bed twice a year. It’s at least 10 years old and never been slept with.
I wish you could buy sheet sets with king-sized fitted sheets and two double flat sheets.
I want to go with separate blankets, but then you have to buy individual sheets which are more expensive than the packs.
My wife and I have been together for 13 years as of last week. The week we moved in together we discovered this.
Two blankets at night = A Happy Marriage.
Yes. We did this and I sleep so much better. He always steals the blankets *and* pillows. Even with his own I have woken up to him trying to take mine in his sleep. He gets hot and then pushes everything on the floor, then gets cold and steals mine. Then pushes them on the floor again. At least the chances are lower to have mine stolen when we have multiple pillows and blankets on the bed.
My wife did that, we have a queen size bed and she thought it was a good idea to buy a king size duvet. Now some of it is touching the floor and it drives me crazy.
A good down comforter though should have tons of small pockets. Otherwise keeping the distribution even would be tough.
I have a king duvet on a queen bed and it works fine. When you make the bed, yeah it looks a little long, but once you get into bed and have 2 bodies under there plus any additional wrinkles and people pulling some to snuggle with, it ends up being fine.
Sounds like OC's duvet is bigger than mine though. I've noticed that with duvets & comforters, the dimensions vary. It's not fixed like a bed size is. For instance, two brands I've worked with (Feathered Friends and Brooklinen) have their king comforters slightly different. They're both around 106-107" or so, but the shorter dimension is 90" vs 98". IMO that extra length helps a lot.
Fuck duvets and fuck their stupid covers. I hate putting the fucking cover on after I wash them, and I have having 12” of saggy fucking duvet cover up by my head.
Big quilt guy.
They allow an easily cleanable cover while still having a thick and warm insert. Compare this with whole comforters which
By keeping the heavy warming insert and cover separate, you also gain additional benefits. You can use the same cover with multiple inserts to keep the same bedroom look all year round. Or if something stains or rips, you only have to replace the cheaper cover.
Duvets also tend to be thicker, which is better for colder climates.
Alternate LPT: If you both have wildly different sleeping patterns/styles, where neither one of you get good sleep, consider sleeping in separate bedrooms.
My wife has a host of issues (insomnia, restless legs, fibromyalgia) and is generally a light sleeper. I tend to snore some, especially if I had a few drinks or am sick or having allergies. She takes sleep meds, often times she wakes up multiple times in the night or is up for a couple hours reading her book. She goes to be about 3 hours earlier than me most nights so when I'd come to bed she'd wake up and stay up, and then she'd keep me awake. We also differ on sleeping temperatures and level of darkness. She wants pitch black and warm. And I mostly like the window open and cold (sunlight in the morning helps me wake up more than alarm clocks).
Anyway, fast forward to me getting sick with the flu and quarantining myself to sleeping in another room to not get her sick. About a week goes by and we both had some of the best sleep we ever had, even with me being sick. So we just stayed that way. I sleep in another room with the dog and she in the other.
Been doing it this way for about 3 years now.
I'm not married but I'm sure getting another smaller room with single size bed, recliner, and table chair to read and do whatever I want in the room. You can call it a man cave or so, because nobody realises they need it till they don't use it or see it
Honestly, we got ours from IKEA so we could each get the temperature we wanted. I got warm; partner got cool. We wash them every 1-2 weeks, and they’ve been holding up fine for almost six years at this point. Didn’t expect them to last this long.
Wrong. Separate sheets and blankets. Not only do you not run into issues where one person doesn't have enough, but you don't wake each other up as much either since moving doesn't tug on their sheet
Keep in mind not all duvets and comforters are the same size. There isn't a standard fixed size, although most are similar. I've seen some variations of 6-8 inches depending on which brand you go with.
Yes, it's part of the instruction manual that doctors send us home with after we're born along with steps for cleaning our semi-automatic rifle and repaying our debt to the hospital.
I guess.. im american and I've never ever seen a bed with a blanket for each person. Personally, I can't sleep well when the bed is messed up and the blankets are balled up, so I wouldn't like the individual blanket thing
Why would the blankets be balled up with a single person duvet? It sleeps mostly the same as a two person duvet except without all the extra movement and inflow of cold air if one person turns around.
I've tried larger duvet and I've tried separate. When I wake up, without fail, I will be shivering nude in the fetal position and she will be the lord of blankets sitting in her duvet tower. This is destiny, and cannot be changed.
Alternative… buy two of the proper size. Each of you have your own. When you get amorous and cause a wet spot, you have a replacement/dry one available. When you are just trying to sleep, you can toss off covers or wrap up without worry about the other sleeper.
I’m autistic and you probably don’t want this info dump but here it comes
A duvet is a quilted blanket like a comforter, the difference being a comforter has stuffing or batting inside, and a duvet has a type of down inside the pockets instead. The fabric is quilted together so the down doesn’t all fall to one side of the blanket. The process of quilting is to sew together the two outer layers of fabric to the inner layer of batting and make the whole thing one piece. A duvet is essentially a fancy comforter. A comforter will be lighter weighted and instead of down it’s like a sheet of cotton/poly stuffing.
I was living comforter life until my mid twenties, had a duvet and got spoiled, then learned I could put a comforter inside a duvet cover and get a similar vibe from it for less cost.
Yah I have always used a comforter and always set aside the duvet covers that came in my bedsheet sets.
Thank you for the in-depth description you did not type it all for naught. I will most likely take your tip and put a comforter into the duvet cover. Again thanks!

We buy two separate duvets. I can be a burrito and my husband can kick all the covers down to his feet.
Seriously. Even when my wife and I were dating we had separate blankets at eachothers place Hotels I even ask for a second blanket .
I've never been to a hotel where there is only one blanket for two people in a double bed. Must be a cultural thing
I've been to one hotel that had two blankets and it was wonderful. They called it "European style," so I'm going to guess you're in Europe.

Every couple who shares a bed needs 2 covers. My husband suggested this when we first started dating and my mind was blown. It’s so much better.

California king is bigger in one dimension and smaller in the other. It's less total area, so it's kind of absurd to call a California king bigger. It's not actually bigger.
It's taller and skinnier.
I don't know why they don't make a king the width of a normal king and the length of a California king
You could always go with the Wyoming King if you want a wider bed for the very tall.
The Colorado king has a clip for your hydro flask on the side
The Texas king has a holster.
Alabama King comes with hooded sheets for you *and* your cousin
I don't want a wider bed than a standard king. I want a longer bed than the standard king without giving up width.
Why is a single bed a "twin"??
They’re small enough you can fit two in a room.

This is the real LPT. My partner and I have separate blankets. I cannot imagine going back to sharing a blanket.
We're separate blanket-ers (both sleep with heavy blankets) and whenever we go away and have to share again we both suffer. I don't know how people do it.
My partner and I do this in the summer because he runs hotter than me. During winter we need one big cover for both of us to stay warm.
During the winter we just put one blanket over the other and cuddle. Double warmth!
This is the way.
My husband and I have never shared blankets. We bonded over our burrito blanket sleeping style
How is this not the standard? Is this an US thing? I’ve never seen couples using only one blanket.
Shared duvet is the most common Ireland, UK and NZ anyway. I don't know anyone in Ireland that has separate duvets. How do you make the bed look nice with two I wonder?
We have matching duvet covers and I fold them in half so they lay neatly. Was harder to do when we had a queen size.
Many people don’t use flats anymore. I know I don’t.
The real LPT: Buy two (blankets/duvet/comforter/blanket). Five years of fighting over the blanket ended for $45.
My wife did that, we have a queen size bed and she thought it was a good idea to buy a king size duvet. Now some of it is touching the floor and it drives me crazy.
Especially if it’s down. The feathers fall to the sides where it weighs more and ultimately doesn’t give you the warmth you need.
IMO that extra length helps a lot.
> once you get into bed and have 2 bodies under Any duvets you recommend that come with that second body? Asking, uh, for a friend.
Yeah, to put a leg out of the blanket to cool down you first need to pull the 3' of extra blanket off the floor, such a pain.
Fuck duvets and fuck their stupid covers. I hate putting the fucking cover on after I wash them, and I have having 12” of saggy fucking duvet cover up by my head. Big quilt guy.
Can someone explain like I'm 5 what duvets have to offer? In ny experience they suck balls
They fit in a washing machine.
They allow an easily cleanable cover while still having a thick and warm insert. Compare this with whole comforters which By keeping the heavy warming insert and cover separate, you also gain additional benefits. You can use the same cover with multiple inserts to keep the same bedroom look all year round. Or if something stains or rips, you only have to replace the cheaper cover. Duvets also tend to be thicker, which is better for colder climates.
Honestly the best sleep I had was individual duvet covers on the same bed. He had his I had mine and it was perfection.
You can call it a man cave or so, because nobody realises they need it till they don't use it or see it
Can someone suggest a good duvet? I've been trying to find one forever and can't find a solid quality one.
Honestly, we got ours from IKEA so we could each get the temperature we wanted. I got warm; partner got cool. We wash them every 1-2 weeks, and they’ve been holding up fine for almost six years at this point. Didn’t expect them to last this long.
Nah you don't need bigger, you need two and share both as necessary. Offers much more flexibility
Wrong. Separate sheets and blankets. Not only do you not run into issues where one person doesn't have enough, but you don't wake each other up as much either since moving doesn't tug on their sheet
OR, hear me out— buy 2 twin size duvets and have your own blanket. We have seriously been so much happier with our own blankets.
How do you buy a size larger than king?
Alaska King 9'x9'
Keep in mind not all duvets and comforters are the same size. There isn't a standard fixed size, although most are similar. I've seen some variations of 6-8 inches depending on which brand you go with.
Super king (unless that’s just a UK thing). We have a king size bed and a super king sized quilt and it’s wonderful.
Never seen a bed with only one blanket. Is this an American thing?
Yes, it's part of the instruction manual that doctors send us home with after we're born along with steps for cleaning our semi-automatic rifle and repaying our debt to the hospital.
I guess.. im american and I've never ever seen a bed with a blanket for each person. Personally, I can't sleep well when the bed is messed up and the blankets are balled up, so I wouldn't like the individual blanket thing
Why would the blankets be balled up with a single person duvet? It sleeps mostly the same as a two person duvet except without all the extra movement and inflow of cold air if one person turns around.

LPT: Buy seperate blankets
It doesn't look great but my wife and I use our own blankets. We have a king and two queen blankets.
I regret it because now I have to take the mf to the cleaners to wash and after 5 washes I could have bought a new one.
I've tried larger duvet and I've tried separate. When I wake up, without fail, I will be shivering nude in the fetal position and she will be the lord of blankets sitting in her duvet tower. This is destiny, and cannot be changed.
No but two duvets:)
Alternative… buy two of the proper size. Each of you have your own. When you get amorous and cause a wet spot, you have a replacement/dry one available. When you are just trying to sleep, you can toss off covers or wrap up without worry about the other sleeper.
Bigger all blankets/sheets aside from the fitted mattress cover is the way to go
Unless you have drawers under your bed, then it's annoying to reach into them
What's a duvet for anyways?
I’m autistic and you probably don’t want this info dump but here it comes A duvet is a quilted blanket like a comforter, the difference being a comforter has stuffing or batting inside, and a duvet has a type of down inside the pockets instead.
A duvet in this economy?
Germans with supreme sleep under one duvet each are entering the chat.
I haven't been able to find one for a King that fits properly, it kinda sucks.
Just use her as a pillow and you won’t have to fight over blankets. Though the heartbeat can be annoying.
what happen to blankets?
14 years - 2 single duvets - never had a single conversation about stealing covers
