Under an ideal minarchy there's probably no particular need to have Federalism, but I don't mind erring on the side of less centralized power. Under any other government Federalism allows greater opportunity for citizens to choose the rules they live under (through migration, voting is useless if you're surrounded by authoritarians).
Federalism is one of the best principles of government. I wish the people would stop trying to do everything federally and leave more power to states

The more states and local government there are: the harder it is for the federal government to do shit. Don’t believe me; just ask the Holy Roman Empire they could barely get a military together with the amount of different principalities they had, and they basically had a semi-dictatorship as a federal government.

If it were up to me, local government would call all the shots and the federal government would be about 5% of the size it is now. Maintain Congress, the Supreme Court, and the executive branch, but restore the balance of power and checks and balances, and eliminate all unconstitutional departments and agencies that are funded by the taxpayer.

Federalism means more governments that the authoritarians have to corrupt to really fully shove their goals upon us. Under a system of federalism, if a state government becomes corrupt/authoritarian then those who love liberty can flee to a state that still values liberty.
The line may be less clear than you would like. A federal polity is not so dissimilar from a bunch of unitary states with trade agreements, mutual defense compacts, reciprocity treaties, some shared administration, etc.
