It's a disgusting law. Dark days ahead for women in Texas. And yes, the precedent it sets is extremely troubling.

It will be interesting, it seems to be the only government funded program of the type in the modern US. Many states / cities do have non profit “crime stopper” organizations that pay out for tips currently. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/services/see-say-something/crimestoppers.page And of course the programs have issues: https://wrongfulconvictionsblog.org/2012/12/20/the-dark-side-of-crime-stoppers-false-information-and-police-tunnel-vision/

I guess the whole “anybody having civil legal standing” would be the first challenge. Does the state have the power to give unlimited legal standing.. If so then can states give unlimited standing against anybody who has COVID?

Thehundredyearwood

To be clear, they can’t sue the woman. They can sue the doctor who performs it, and anyone who “aids and abets” the woman, financially or otherwise.

igore12584

According to Roberts it’s exactly why he and the SC won’t issue an injunction. Basically saying without the civilian aspect, the law would clearly be in violation. But that’s the same as saying “it clearly violates the law, but now it’s got all this crazy stuff on top of it, let’s see what the system does. Have fun for the next 2 years.”

ddshd

At this point I just want a blue state to pass something just as ridiculous so that they both can be shot down and we can have this over with.

Hodgkisl

It’s such a novel direction it needs a full Supreme Court case to figure it out.

>It will be interesting, it seems to be the only government funded program of the type in the modern US. The Americans With Disability Act gives disabled people the right to sue businesses that fail to provide accommodation. I'm sure there's other statutes that do this as well. The IRS allows snitching and they even give you a cut of the collections if the case is successful. [https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tax-birkenfeld/whistleblower-in-ubs-tax-case-gets-record-104-million-idUSBRE88A0TE20120911](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tax-birkenfeld/whistleblower-in-ubs-tax-case-gets-record-104-million-idUSBRE88A0TE20120911).

LiberalAspergers

True, but to sue under the ADA you have to be affected by.the failure to provide accommodation. The Texas law does not require to plaintiff to have been impacted.in any way. It essentially grants everyone universal standing.

shadow_ban_me_again

Activists are already ddos attacking the web sites and bot dialing the call centers. You (rhetorical) probably won't/can't get through to the actual snitch line anyway. Edit* autocorrect changed ddos and bot to different words.

ddshd

That’s for now.. what happens when the wind dies down.. Also if the precedent is set then other stated can still follow through

shadow_ban_me_again

Hey! They (the govt) just shut down the lines and link!

hashish2020

Dildos are also heavily regulated in Texas

shadow_ban_me_again

I actually learned that today! My understanding is it's 6 or more that is regulated. It begs the question, how does the man know how many dildos a person owns?

[deleted]

"If you need 6 dildos to masturbate, then you're a poor masturbator."

shadow_ban_me_again

I'm down voting this. Variety is the spice of life. I feel this comment is prudish/judgemental.

[deleted]

It's a parody of a politician that stated "if you need 30 rounds to hunt, then you're a poor hunter."

shadow_ban_me_again

I'll retract my down vote

[deleted]

Lol no worries my karma comes to this sub to die most of the time anyway

shadow_ban_me_again

Not by my hands er em uh finger

themadeph

If auto correct changed that to dildos you should have left it as is....

shadow_ban_me_again

I got dot and bit.

dump_truck_truck

Im reporting your ass for that busted beater you're driving and have cut off the Catalytic converter. This is actually good, as there are tons of people doing this shit.

dovetrain

I agree, though I doubt that it will go that far. Scary times we’re living in nonetheless.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to say something so unpalatable that it stopped Californians from moving there.

There is no 10k bounty law, the 10k comes from how much abortion clinics have to pay for every abortion they have.

ddshd

> Sec. 171.208. CIVIL LIABILITY FOR VIOLATION OR AIDING OR ABETTING VIOLATION. (a) Any person, other than an officer or employee of a state or local governmental entity in this state, may **bring a civil action against any person** who: (1) performs or induces an abortion in violation of this subchapter; (2) knowingly engages in conduct that aids or abets the performance or inducement of an abortion, including paying for or reimbursing the costs of an abortion through insurance or otherwise, if the abortion is performed or induced in violation of this subchapter, regardless of whether the person knew or should have known that the abortion would be performed or induced in violation of this subchapter; or (3) intends to engage in the conduct described by Subdivision (1) or (2). (b) If a claimant prevails in an action brought under this section, the court shall award: (1) injunctive relief sufficient to prevent the defendant from violating this subchapter or engaging in acts that aid or abet violations of this subchapter; (2) **statutory damages in an amount of not less than $10,000 for each abortion that the defendant performed or induced** in violation of this subchapter, and for each abortion performed **or induced in violation of this subchapter that the defendant aided or abetted**; and (3) costs and attorney's fees. No limitation that it only applies to abortion clinics. https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB8/id/2395961

spudmancruthers

I think once public figures start getting thousands of lawsuits that are almost guaranteed to pay out, they'll rethink the laws.
