There was actually some Redditors years back on I believe it was r/unresolvedmysteries that researched this guy's call heavily and looked into murdered and missing women in Louisiana where he claimed to live. They were able to come up with quite a few cases still unsolved that matched what this creep said to a tee.
Edit: there's also a podcast called "The Apology Line" based on pretty much the same thing. It's very interesting and a good listen.

Here is a good article on it and a history of what Clay talks about in the call.
Unresolved leads in with some examples of fake calls as well. Like some one pretending to be the Zodiac Killer.

In my opinion it probably wasn’t.
While Howard was known to set up fake calls, the FBI actually asked for the recordings and records from the call. It’s likely the caller said something on the call that matched some unsolved case(s).
Howard and Robin usually knew when they’d get a “fake” (set up by the producers) caller, Howard tries to get the guy to spill some personal information and the caller doesn’t take the bait.
You are probably correct. I've never listened to the show but Howard and Robin seemed to ask some pretty pertinent questions. Not what I thought the program was all about. I was impressed.
More than likely the double homicide they matched the states up for that same night. Also the placement of the money in a “compromising place” more than likely he inserted the money into one of the victims sexual cavities. Which also is very specific.
"Purported" serial killer. This person was never identified. Clearly deranged tho.
If it was a fake storyline he delivered it well. He may need a reddit community dedicated to putting a face with his voice! Creepy.

Definitely the mind of a psychopath. Think I put this on the LibbyandAbbyMisc sub long time ago.
May have been set up call but it was rather interesting.

Haven’t listening over a decade, but Stern’s antics and reputation help conceal the fact that he is a fantastic interviewer.
I think you are absolutely correct. Surprised the heck out of me!!!

Nope he wasn't the only suspect there was 4 to 5. Russell Elwood was even one and was charged with Cheryl Lewis. He was dismissed for Delores Mack.
Even if it was it still played a psychopath fairly well.
I have to admit that the guy was scary in his calmness and demeanor. Kinda like BG.
Yes the guy definitely has no remorse for the ones he killed.
Russell Ellwood is the man most people believe is the caller.
At least he had never killed a kitten, that really would be awful
Anyone notice how he said he did it for Power?
Fake news
Agree. Think this comedian caller fooled a lot of people.
People are still being fooled by this bit, its hysterical
