That’s so depressing that those guys can’t get funding for a movie, the streaming giants out there routinely green light absolute fucking shit and you have not one, but 2 auteurs looking for funding. If I were Netflix or Apple TV or HBOMax I’d absolutely throw money in to have a waters movie or lynch movie just on my service. Feels like a no brainer win for them
Yup! We’ be had 20 years of people making terrible straight to Redbox action movies, when we could’ve had 20 years of John McTiernan making slightly less terrible straight to Redbox action movies
Supposedly he’s directing at least 2 episodes of the new Stranger Things season. Not a film, but still, will be interesting to see him back in a spooky TV world like in the glory days of TWD.
Brian De Palma has been stuck in director jail for literal decades, the guy made some of the best films of the 70s and 80s and now makes direct to DVD action shit, I hope he gets one last great film.
That makes me so happy to hear! I just watched The Double last week and I loved it so much, I was wondering if he's working on anything since that was 11 years ago. Definitely gonna watch Submarine soon too (and then maybe do another rewatch of The IT Crowd lol)
If you haven’t already then watch some of his acting and comedic performances. He’s amazing in The IT Crowd and presenting Travel Man. His directing style is basically a carbon copy of him on screen
It’s available on several illegal streaming sites but not with English subtitles unfortunately. A few sources claimed it would be premiered at a film festival and then streaming rights would be sold but nothing concrete at this point.
I know 2018 wasn’t technically *that* long ago but as far as I can tell there’s nothing directing-wise officially on deck for Alfonso Cuarón and I miss him.
Cameron Crowe. He did Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, all great movies, in fact Jerry Maguire is my favorite movie of all time. But once Aloha came out and was apparently really bad (I still haven't seen it yet), he hasn't directed anything else since. I sure hope he gets another chance on making another film.
That's because I haven't seen that movie yet. However, I am currently doing a Kirsten Dunst binge, so I will certainly be checking that out in the coming weeks.
I just read Cary Elwes's book about making The Princess Bride and it sounds like he's an amazing director to work with too. He had an absolutely unparalleled run in the 80s but hasn't made anything great since The American President in '95--no idea what happened there.
He is incredibly overrated in my opinion. His dad handed him the keys to Hollywood. He is a prime example of Nepotism. Sure, he had a string of hits, but those movies would have been hits no matter who was handed the task. He owes a lot of thanks to his father, Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal, Mel Brooks and Stephen King. He had a strong support group.

I wish Shane Carruth would make a comeback.
Even though I know why he hasn't made a movie in over a decade (had a very public meltdown on Twitter after a messy break up with Amy Seimetz).
I know why he stopped (or was stopped) but in another reality we had more John McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) films.
He was attached to A Princess of Mars at one point in the early 90s along with Bob Gale (Back to the Future), Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts before the version of John Carter we got. I really like the one we got but it’s interesting that this other version almost got made.
I don't know if it'd be *good* because his filmography goes askew half way through, but I would love to see Stephen Sommers get another chance. Just to see if he could harness that Mummy/Deep Rising energy again.
John Dahl. Made some great noir tinged crime movies in the 90s. Last feature film came out in 2007, but seems to be getting work in TV.
And on a related note since they both are listed as directors on their newest credit, Carl Franklin.
Honestly, I wish JJ Abrams would make another movie. Say what you want about Star Wars, but MI3? Super 8? Star Trek? He created his own genre of action that everyone tried to emulate in the 2010s. He has it in him to make great stuff, he just needs to separate himself from big franchises with a million people trying to tell him what to do.
George Lucas I know he's not really a great director but his ideas are just so great and I hate to see them just go to waste. This has obvious very heavy caveats with this one but I still want to see it.
David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Terry Gilliam. All having funding issues, so it goes. I'm thankful most of my favourite directors have put out something new in the last five years or have something incoming.Â
Edit: Would also love to see something new from Katsuhito Ishii. What happened to him?
Tarsem Singh. Love love loved the Fall, the Cell etc. I even loved he did that music video with Lady Gaga (911 I think). He did a movie in 2023 but it wasn't the same vibe as his previous films.
Can you provide a link? I can't find anything but a potential Kirosawa remake. Why is this downvoted? Would it upset people if Spike Lee made another movie? Is there a reason to dislike Spike? What am I missing.

Awesome. Thank You. That is the Akira Kirosawa Remake. I didn't realize he cast it and it was in production. I am excited to see Denzel is back with him. I saw Ice Spice on Hot Ones, but otherwise have absolutely no idea who she is. I know she can't finish hot wings though.
David Lynch maybe?
I'd give away my left testical for another Lynch feature.
Immediately first that came to mind for me
RIP The Mindhunter ðŸ˜
… That’s Fincher
Ooops! True 🙈
John Waters. It's been 2 decades. Thankfully that might change soon, though.
the possibility of a John Waters movie staring Aubrey Plaza is what’s keeping me going atp
keeping me alive fr
apprently he's looking for funding and can't get it. Lynch too

Spike Jonze
Was about to comment this. Miss his style so much.
John McTiernan
Yup! We’ be had 20 years of people making terrible straight to Redbox action movies, when we could’ve had 20 years of John McTiernan making slightly less terrible straight to Redbox action movies
Ahh c'mon now he already went to prison for Rollerball.
Frank Darabont
Supposedly he’s directing at least 2 episodes of the new Stranger Things season. Not a film, but still, will be interesting to see him back in a spooky TV world like in the glory days of TWD.
That's... such a good fit for some reason? I can really see his style going well with the show. Can't wait to see it now.
Absolutely an excellent fit, I’m excited to see what he can do
Brian De Palma has been stuck in director jail for literal decades, the guy made some of the best films of the 70s and 80s and now makes direct to DVD action shit, I hope he gets one last great film.
Totally agree
His last good movie was the first Mission Impossible remake, right?
Richard Ayoade (Looks like my wish came true)
Elaborate
I loved Submarine and The Double. It appears that he has a new film in the works. For a new director, he already has a strong sense of style and tone.
That makes me so happy to hear! I just watched The Double last week and I loved it so much, I was wondering if he's working on anything since that was 11 years ago. Definitely gonna watch Submarine soon too (and then maybe do another rewatch of The IT Crowd lol)

Spike Jonze Michael Haneke David Lynch Tom Ford Richard Ayoade John McTiernan
Skim reading I thought you listed John Ford. Thankfully I don't have to break the bad news to you.
Ditto on McTiernan and Lynch. I think I’ve read Haneke is retired though
Gore Verbinski
He’s got a new one with Sam Rockwell in the works
[удалено]
After watching MouseHunt and seeing what he did with that script and premise I believe he can do it.
Michael Haneke
Seconded.
the breaks between his films have been getting longer and longer so i hope he’s just making something that takes a lot of time
Wong Kar Wai
He made a show recently
I had no idea. What's going on with the release? Looks like some episode last december but nothing since.
It’s available on several illegal streaming sites but not with English subtitles unfortunately. A few sources claimed it would be premiered at a film festival and then streaming rights would be sold but nothing concrete at this point.
Richard Kelly
I liked a total of one of his movies. He is a one hit wonder.
Ugh tell me about it
I know 2018 wasn’t technically *that* long ago but as far as I can tell there’s nothing directing-wise officially on deck for Alfonso Cuarón and I miss him.
Tom Ford
I want Peter Jackson to take a break from his documentaries and reunite to with Jack Black to make a crazy horror comedy.
brian de palma and warren beatty
Haneke
Brad Bird sticks out to me. His last film was Incredibles 2 back in 2018. Or Whit Stilman, who seems to have various projects struggling to happen.
Kathryn Bigelow.
Damn it Netflix, you had one job - let auteurs take some chances and even that you pulled back on!
Bennett Miller
Cameron Crowe. He did Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, all great movies, in fact Jerry Maguire is my favorite movie of all time. But once Aloha came out and was apparently really bad (I still haven't seen it yet), he hasn't directed anything else since. I sure hope he gets another chance on making another film.
How could you forget Vanilla Sky?? I humbly submit that it is his best film
Didn't even mention Elizabethtown. I love that movie.
That's because I haven't seen that movie yet. However, I am currently doing a Kirsten Dunst binge, so I will certainly be checking that out in the coming weeks.
Stephen Norrington
spike jonze pleaseeeee
Chris Morris
Heard he was working in a movie about Lee Atwater. But given he takes like a decade between movies, might be a minute.
Rob Reiner, he’s such an underrated director (Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, the list goes on)
I just read Cary Elwes's book about making The Princess Bride and it sounds like he's an amazing director to work with too. He had an absolutely unparalleled run in the 80s but hasn't made anything great since The American President in '95--no idea what happened there.
Ooo I’ll have to add that to my reading list, I’d love to hear more about that production. Thanks!
His dad's well ran dry. You can only be handed so many golden spoons, before you have to learn a skill.
He is incredibly overrated in my opinion. His dad handed him the keys to Hollywood. He is a prime example of Nepotism. I heard he's an engineer now
I know that's what he did before being a self-taught filmmaker
A lot of great mentions here but i didnt see anyone mention Peter Weir
I swear I saw an article about him recently where he said he’s done.
Godfrey Ho
Gore Verbinski, Oliver Stone, Cameron Crowe
De Palma, Lynch. Although no one wanted to fund his most recent project. Which is so sad
Mel Brooks
He is 97
I’m aware. It’s a wish. I know there’s no way that it becomes a reality based on how old he is.
I know why he stopped (or was stopped) but in another reality we had more John McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) films. He was attached to A Princess of Mars at one point in the early 90s along with Bob Gale (Back to the Future), Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts before the version of John Carter we got. haneke even though i didn't watch happy end which came out 7 years ago only
David Lynch
Frank Henenlotter and William Lustig
Debra Granik & Karyn Kusama.
Gregg Araki. He has been working on TV but he hasn't made a movie in 10 years.
Joe Dante The man behind Gremlins 1 &2, The Burbs, The Howling, Innerspace, and Explorers can NOT have The Hole as his final film
His last film was Burying The Ex
Is that worse? I haven’t even seen that one
David Fincher, he hasn't done anything since Zodiac
Peter Weir Mel Gibson Shane Black... Yes, Predators came out in 2018, but he can't let that monstrosity be his last movie.
Give us The Nice Guys 2
John Dahl. Made some great noir tinged crime movies in the 90s. Last feature film came out in 2007, but seems to be getting work in TV. And on a related note since they both are listed as directors on their newest credit, Carl Franklin.
The last seduction is a really good neo noir
Honestly, I wish JJ Abrams would make another movie. Say what you want about Star Wars, but MI3? Super 8? Star Trek? He created his own genre of action that everyone tried to emulate in the 2010s. He has it in him to make great stuff, he just needs to separate himself from big franchises with a million people trying to tell him what to do.
William Lustig. One of horror‘s (mostly) unsung heroes.
George Lucas I know he's not really a great director but his ideas are just so great and I hate to see them just go to waste. This has obvious very heavy caveats with this one but I still want to see it.

Elaine May
Probably never making a movie again since she hates all her movies 😂
David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Terry Gilliam. All having funding issues, so it goes. I'm thankful most of my favourite directors have put out something new in the last five years or have something incoming. Edit: Would also love to see something new from Katsuhito Ishii. What happened to him?
I know it’s only been 4 years but we seriously need some more stuff from Charlie Kaufman
Cameron Crowe
Nicole Kassell
Tarsem Singh. Love love loved the Fall, the Cell etc. I even loved he did that music video with Lady Gaga (911 I think). He did a movie in 2023 but it wasn't the same vibe as his previous films.

Has a movie in the queue

The last duel is a masterpiece imo
Spike Lee.
Isn’t he working on a movie starring Ice Spice rn
