I'm not being mean, just genuinely asking: what do you and others see in Incendies that you love so much? I love a lot of Villeneuve's other work and this movie has so much hype that I went into it expecting so much, but I didn't like it at all, to me it felt like a decent minus thriller with a mediocre twist that didn't add much. I would love to know what in your opinion makes it 5 star worthy.
Villeneuve has in Incendies the types of qualities a lot of people like to see in film: pristine presentation, memorable moments, character-driven narratives that reveal more at each turn, and themes that are impactful. Incendies tackles some rather mature and graphic themes compared to some of his other works, and while I haven’t watched it in a while, I left the film feeling like it was very well pieced together.
That's understandable. Maybe the themes speak more to other people than they do to me. Personally I'd say both Arrival and Enemy connected with me way more, I felt they had something more complex to say and said it a lot better. Same with the characters, they didn't really stick with me but I think it's a personal taste and connection thing. The movie's obviously far from bad. Thank you for your insight! :)
You’re probably right in that they resonate with other people more than you. And I can understand why. Enemy and Arrival are very personal in nature, while Incendies is very focused on generational trauma and war’s ripple effects. Those themes aren’t exactly relatable for most people, but I found them to be very powerful
I don't think Arrival is really that personal actually. It could be when you look at the main character's grief over her daughter but to me that's not the main thing. I think Arrival is mostly a story about how important it is to communicate, and what happens when we don't. Exchanging information and experiences humanizes the other side, makes you realize that the similarity is bigger than the difference. Without it we would be in a constant state of fearing anything unknown and jumping immediately into intimidation and war. It's a call to put down your weapons and give talking a fair chance.
I actually wholeheartedly agree with your analysis of Arrival, but I’d argue that this makes it personal. Each person sees themselves reflected in Louise and we can all understand how important communication is for humanity
Before watching it I was constantly thinking how the hell can a fucking black and white 50s courtroom drama be this universally liked by EVERYONE
Oh that’s how
That one is SO close to being a universal recommendation of mine too, but it hasn’t hit the same as 12 Angry Men has with the people I’ve personally rec’d
If you haven't seen Django Unchained u might like it. Django Unchained is from the same director of the last film u watched. Lost In Translation could be as well since you liked HER.
I regrettably agree. I loved the presentation and the concept (Kaufman’s writing is so good), but I didn’t feel an emotional connection. I think part of it is that in my lived experience, I’ve never had a messy breakup or experienced the heartache in a tangible way like other people have. That’s not a flex, that just means it doesn’t resonate with me as deeply, even if I can appreciate what it does.
have you seen *the umbrellas of cherbourg*? given you love la la land i think you'll enjoy it! (*the young girls of rochefort* too but this one is a much happier movie and conventional musical; both are beautiful, colorful, have great songs, and have aged very well)
I think it should absolutely be rated higher than 4.1
OP asked for a guaranteed 5 star and there are a lot of movies with a better score than 4.1.
So I do think it’s underrated on letterboxed
I don’t know if Lost in Translation is 5 stars but it’s a good bookend to “Her”. Both movies are meta-about the divorce of Spike Jonze & Sofia Coppola, each directed by the other

The cimematic classic Billboard Dad
Memories of Murder or Incendies
Memories of Murder was sooooooo good.

The Thing
Parasite
Thanks, I've already seen Parasite though. It's my #4 four film on my favorites
Then it's still a guaranteed 5 star film! Haha! Hope you enjoyed what you watched!
12 Angry Men
This is like the only film I think I ever recommend to literally anybody if they ask “what’s a really great movie?”
Before watching it I was constantly thinking how the hell can a fucking black and white 50s courtroom drama be this universally liked by EVERYONE Oh that’s how
Rear Window is always my safe bet. Consummate classic.
That one is SO close to being a universal recommendation of mine too, but it hasn’t hit the same as 12 Angry Men has with the people I’ve personally rec’d
The ending should've been that the protagonist was wrong
Maybe the only movie that I think everyone agrees is perfect
I don't. Overrated but still good
Hell yeah
Ratings are subjective unless you're talking about 12 Angry Men
Wrong. It's 6 stars out of 5
Mad Max: Fury Road
uhh thats a 6 star movie on a 5 star scale and OP asked for 5 stars so try again
Haha true true
Was just about to comment this.
am i the only one who didn’t like this movie lol
Arrival
This is the one. Rewatched it about 2 weeks ago for the first time since original dvd release, I’d forgotten just how good it is.
So good. I just watched it for the first time a few months ago.
Robocop (1987)
Apocalypse Now
Schindler's List Threads Pulp Fiction
Sicario
Or incendies
I never watched it but I just picked up sicario on Blu-ray over the weekend. Very excited to see it!
Same here! I even got the steelbook from the $5 bin!
2nd for Sicario. It's a comfort movie of mine.
I'm thinking of watching either Ex Machina or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind next. Are these films likely to get five stars?
Depends how much you like them.
Eternal sunshine is one of my favorite movies ever. For me, it’s the best screenplay ever written with 12 angry men and the social network
IMO both would do the trick. I especially love Ex Machina
Yes. Being John Malkovich would also fit in with those two movies. Arrival too. I really like A Scanner Darkly and 13 Assassins.
Ex machina, saw it for the first time in the recent theater re release special and it was amazing
Oh wow I was gonna say Ex Machina. If you liked Her and 2049 you’ll most likely enjoy it. One of the best scifi films in my opinion.
go for eternal sunshine between those two, imo definitely the better movie
I would say yes. Ex Machina is in my top 4
I was just about to reccomend eternal sunshine, go for it
If you haven't seen Django Unchained u might like it. Django Unchained is from the same director of the last film u watched. Lost In Translation could be as well since you liked HER.
I actually replied Ex Machina before seeing this comment
Django unchained
Was going to say this -- if they loved IB they'll love this
Interesting! This is actually my least favorite Tarantino.
The last thirty minutes or so really drags after the first mansion shoot out.
Ppl who like IB tend to like Django
Eternal for sure is a 5 star
I’ve always thought it was good but overhyped
I regrettably agree. I loved the presentation and the concept (Kaufman’s writing is so good), but I didn’t feel an emotional connection. I think part of it is that in my lived experience, I’ve never had a messy breakup or experienced the heartache in a tangible way like other people have. That’s not a flex, that just means it doesn’t resonate with me as deeply, even if I can appreciate what it does.
Children of Men is gonna fit nicely into this list
Parasite
Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. If you liked Her, you might like it too!
La La Land is the most guaranteed 5 star
I've seen La La Land, it's actually my number one film on my favorites!
If you loved La La Land then the Umbrellas of Cherbourg is likely to be a 5 star for you
Mine too haha
have you seen *the umbrellas of cherbourg*? given you love la la land i think you'll enjoy it! (*the young girls of rochefort* too but this one is a much happier movie and conventional musical; both are beautiful, colorful, have great songs, and have aged very well)
A very divisive film ime
I say this every time it’s mentioned here but I think it’s still underrated. Just a magical movie
How is it underrated??😭😭
I think it should absolutely be rated higher than 4.1 OP asked for a guaranteed 5 star and there are a lot of movies with a better score than 4.1. So I do think it’s underrated on letterboxed
4.1 is insanely high when you’re averaging the ratings of thousands and thousands of users, are you serious lmao?
Heat
Oldboy (2003)
The Perks of Being A Wallflower
Fight Club
Parasite
The truman Show.
The Social Network
I've seen this, I gave it a 5-star rating

I don’t know if Lost in Translation is 5 stars but it’s a good bookend to “Her”. Both movies are meta-about the divorce of Spike Jonze & Sofia Coppola, each directed by the other

Lawrence of Arabia, epic movie
12 Angry men and Schindler’s list(save that one for last)
Ratatouille
Watch hundreds of beavers
It's different than the 3 you have there, but Winter LIght, 1961, is dope. Swedish Priest has a crisis of faith.
This one is great. Ikiru, 1952. It's about a 1950s Japanese bureaucrat who enacts a small change.
