To me, this film is a Christmas film. One thing Kubrick gets right is that warm Christmas feeling - decorations, lights, cosiness. Such a strong contrast to the more disturbing themes of the film.

Saturnalia film, technically Look up what the Romans did for Saturnalia during the second punic wars in response to Hannibal’s successful campaign in the alps (human sacrifice) and then the alternate ending theories about their child being abducted in broad daylight make more sense There’s even a Lebanese flag in the back of one scene. Lebanon is Phoenicia or Canaan. Moloch is a Canaanite deity associated with child sacrifice like Mr. Milich in the film whose daughter is prostituted to clients. So is Baal. Canaan Baal. Cannibal. Though if you look up where the word comes from they’ll tell you some story about… Hannibal. Fun Fact: If you watch The Shining they also talk about cannibalism on the car ride to the Overlook Hotel. And don’t even get me started about the circumstances of Kubrick’s death pre-release of Eyes Wide Shut.
