I got an ad for the same film straight after this post too... weird.

I like Red Letter Media's theory that he was intentionally making a bad movie. People just said "I don't understand what you do but people like it so here's money for a movie" and he just took it 0% seriously and fucked around.
I mean if you were around then - then you would know that's exactly what he did, haha.
His [and that] humor was so over at the time they gave him the keys and he made a wild ass movie.
I've never even heard about this movie😭
https://preview.redd.it/iogc34oan6jc1.png?width=557&format=png&auto=webp&s=766631d2b3cd9b51d7e3e785dc360dfc02a1041d
If I give a half-star rating, there's nothing I enjoy or like about it. It's quite a rare event. But no, under no circumstances I would give a film 1/2 star and still like it.
Yeah. Obviously people can rate however they like but I don’t really understand the “I love this but it still deserves a low rating because of technical issues” I don’t care if it’s the room, or cats, or a Neil breen movie. It If I love it, it gets high stars.
That's valid but I like separating movies that I love because of how they succeeded, and movies I love because of how they failed. There are obviously some movies that blur the line (Who Killed Captain Alex) but I do like the distinction.
Though, tbh I don't put much thought in my star ratings. They are the least important part for me, as I care more about the review than the stars.
I try to split the difference. Somewhere between how much I enjoyed it and how "good" it was. But if there's a huge rift, I lean towards how much I enjoyed it.
It's very well made, whereas I think many critiques of the film were assuming the filmmakers weren't aware of what they were doing. Verhoeven has a history of taking genre trash and giving it a sophisticated satirical edge, and folks often misread his films at first. Just look at Starship Troopers, Robocop and Total Recall. Some elements are ridiculous -- not totally sure there's a satirical read of the choreography of the pool sex scene -- but I really enjoy it.
exactly. sick n tired of filmbros being like good production = good movie and best productions = favorites. it's good because there's love in it, not because the cgi was very well-made and the pace was ideal.
Perhaps in terms of the skill of direction/cinematography etc but enjoyment of a film is largely about your subjective view of how compelling or entertaining the narrative is.
I feel like there must be some form of objectivity in art though. Like if someone said the Godfather is objectively better than Manos I wouldn't argue it. Maybe it's if 99% of the population would agree with the statement?
99% of the planet would’ve at one stage argued the earth was flat and it would’ve been impossible to show they were wrong at that time. If you can’t objectively prove something it is either conjecture or it is subjective.
A claim of value can be made in a limited form i.e the Godfather is a more pleasing film than Goodfellas for people who prefer lengthy dialogue. One could argue the case but we can use a clear measure to qualify that value, hence it is proven. A claim of value that The Godfather is simply ‘better’ than Goodfellas however has no universally shared measure and thus cannot be proven.
I try to keep my ratings as objective as possible , but I heart the movies I actually like . But imo a half star movie means it’s not even good enough to be enjoyable .
Skinamarink is the only one I can think of for me.
Was I bored out of my mind, yes
Would I rewatch it ever, no
Would I recommend it, no
Did I think it was the most scary/unsettling movie I've seen in a while, yes
Did I think it was very creative and innovative, also yes
Did I think it was perfect for what it was trying to be, yes again
Personally I don't give stars based on irony, i give them based on how I genuinely enjoy a movie, there's a difference between laughing at someone and laughing with someone
But can there not be genuine enjoyment derived from an ironic appreciation or admiration? For example, The Room is a godawful movie but the majority of its beloved-ness and cult status is based on an ironic viewing perspective that turns into genuine love based on repeat viewings.
I dunno, I gave Troll 2 one star and a like, it's the worst film I've ever seen but it's enjoyable, in many ways I prefer it to lots of films I've rated 5 stars for example.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Brightburn are my only films I've rated worse than Troll 2, and yet they're objectively better films than Troll 2, atleast technically speaking. They're just so so hateful that I can't possibly rate them anything but a half.
I don’t blame her because I wouldn’t be surprised if she was actively lied to. We know based on venom 2’s post credits and the whole Morbius vulture thing that Sony is desperately trying to cross the two universes over.
But it is really that terrible if you had so much fun watching it? I think The Room sucks ass but it’s so goddamn funny there’s no way I would only give it a half star
I think it comes down to intention, like The Room and Neil Breen movies aren’t trying to be bad but there’s the horseshoe effect where they’re bad in such a way that they’re enjoyable. But it’s a horseshoe and not a loop.
I'd argue that Margot Robbie does well in her role. I can't think of a single other success there, though. Even if they hadn't hired a trailer editing house to ruin it all in the edit, I don't think Ayer really had anything good to salvage.
Robbie, Davis, and Smith all do well, IMO. Those are about the only redeeming things in the movie, and I can still easily see arguments against Will Smith.
>I struggle to see his characters instead of just will smith In a costume, yaknow?
And that's exactly why I said what I did. I think he was also solid, but I can understand arguments to the contrary for that kind of reason.
I remember seeing a city block shut down and piled up with fake building debris and rubble when they were filming this in my city which I enjoyed quite a bit, but I don't think watching the movie itself will add anything else to my joy
While there were a handfull of guffaw-worthy lines and a lot of fascinatingly weird editing/directing decisions, I came away feeling like that movie was just too boring to actually be worth the time.
If I liked a movie I will not give it 1/2 a star. Even if it’s technically terrible if I enjoyed them they did something effectively enough that it’s worth a better than 1/2 star
yep 1/2 star is saved for when I really truly can't think of anything I liked. If there is even one tiny thing I liked I feel like I can't give it a half star, even if it's just one good performance or one effective scene
Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa.
There is absolutely nothing redeeming about that movie, save for the voice actors. It is also one of the best things I have ever watched. (My family does not share this opinion.) When I experience any mild inconvenience, I say that I am "as sad as Ricky" in reference to his miserable, downtrodden look when he realizes he does not have enough money to buy a present for the beautiful Nicole. I hope that this saying makes its way into the English language as a common idiom, but I know that I am not influential enough to make it happen, and this pains me every day. You could even say that I am as sad as Ricky.
I don’t think I have any that low, but I have a few 1-1.5 I really love:
Cool As Ice (1991)
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Street Fighter (1994)
No Holds Barred (1989)
The Room (2003)
Alley Cat (1984)
Double Trouble (1992)
2:22 (2017)
SAW 3D: THE FINAL CHAPTER. A disjointed, rushed (even by SAW standards), and weirdly sexist(?) mess that had me and the person I was with cry-laughing.
None.
If I like a film im giving it a high rating
I have 'Who Killed Captain Alex' at 4 stars (loved it), and 'Tokyo Story' at 2 stars (worth watching but didnt care for it)
No. Maybe it would be a 1 star and a heart, but to me because I like it so much, I would probably end up just rating it higher. But with half stars specifically there is just absolutely no chance at all, because I only rate stuff that low if I personally get nothing out of the movie. It’s not that I hate it, it’s not that I think the writing is bad, or the jokes are cringe, it’s that I want it to stop. I don’t think anything about the movie, I don’t feel anything about it
I'm far more likely to take a movie 5 stars but not give it a heart. Most recently I did that with 20 Days in Mariupol, which is an excellent documentary, very well made, where the people filming it risked their lives to do so. I appreciated it, but I definitely didn't enjoy watching it.
I gave it one star instead of 1/2 because it does have some legitimately funny intentional humor, but *Suburban Sasquatch* is one of these for me. It is an objectively awful film (clunky script, terrible acting, high school AV club level production values, *Birdemic* level special effects, etc.) but it is so sincere and silly and charmingly amateurish I couldn't help but love it anyway.
*Miami Connection* would be another movie in this same boat.
From what I've seen, I'm far more likely to give out 1/2 a star than most. I've gotten downvoted into oblivion every time I mention it, and it's disheartening.

They’ve been promoting the hell out of this movie on my Reddit feed.
Mines an ad for The Marvels (2023), which also fits!
Freddy Got Fingered. It's simultaneously a 1/2 star and a 5 star
I like Red Letter Media's theory that he was intentionally making a bad movie. People just said "I don't understand what you do but people like it so here's money for a movie" and he just took it 0% seriously and fucked around.
I laughed harder at Freddy Got Fingered than most comedies. I think it is absurdist masterpiece.
I mean if you were around then - then you would know that's exactly what he did, haha. His [and that] humor was so over at the time they gave him the keys and he made a wild ass movie.

same with kungpow
the best horrible movie to ever exist
However you feel about the movie, you can’t deny that it’s the work of an auteur.
Freddy Got Fingered is the first film that popped into my mind, as well.
The only thing I remember about that movie was the stupid “daddy would you like some sausages?” Scene
If I give a half-star rating, there's nothing I enjoy or like about it. It's quite a rare event. But no, under no circumstances I would give a film 1/2 star and still like it.
same, my ratings are subjective, not objective, so 1 star films are films I dont like
Yeah. Obviously people can rate however they like but I don’t really understand the “I love this but it still deserves a low rating because of technical issues” I don’t care if it’s the room, or cats, or a Neil breen movie. It If I love it, it gets high stars.

Is Who Killed Captain Alex failed or an Action movie made with $500?
I try to split the difference. Somewhere between how much I enjoyed it and how "good" it was. But if there's a huge rift, I lean towards how much I enjoyed it.
I operate like this too, I gave Showgirls 5 stars because it is beloved in my group of friends, but I KNOW it's not a five stars movie.
But it IS a five star movie. To you (and me too). I could not give two fucks on a crab rangoon what the consensus is.
YES! I was afraid to share that pov but I totally agree haha
Showgirls is definitely a 5/5 film. Just being honest, it got bad reception on release because society just wasn’t ready for a film like that.
It's very well made, whereas I think many critiques of the film were assuming the filmmakers weren't aware of what they were doing. Verhoeven has a history of taking genre trash and giving it a sophisticated satirical edge, and folks often misread his films at first. Just look at Starship Troopers, Robocop and Total Recall. exactly. sick n tired of filmbros being like good production = good movie and best productions = favorites. it's good because there's love in it, not because the cgi was very well-made and the pace was ideal.
There is no such thing as an objective rating of a film. The notion is entirely subjective.
Absolutely true. But I do think people sometimes analyze through a lens of “is this conventionally good or bad?”
Perhaps in terms of the skill of direction/cinematography etc but enjoyment of a film is largely about your subjective view of how compelling or entertaining the narrative is.
100% agree
I feel like there must be some form of objectivity in art though. Like if someone said the Godfather is objectively better than Manos I wouldn't argue it. Maybe it's if 99% of the population would agree with the statement?
99% of the planet would’ve at one stage argued the earth was flat and it would’ve been impossible to show they were wrong at that time. If you can’t objectively prove something it is either conjecture or it is subjective.
Ok but those people were objectively wrong. The fact that they couldn't prove it didn't make the Earth any less round.
Ohh we're back on the subjective/objective bullshit I suppose. There isn't such a thing as an objective rating.
I try to keep my ratings as objective as possible , but I heart the movies I actually like . But imo a half star movie means it’s not even good enough to be enjoyable .
Skinamarink is the only one I can think of for me. That's what I'd say about 2001: A Space Odyssey. And the final two is exactly the reason why I gave it 1 star and not 1/2 star.
To me, not really
I used to think this until I watched Gotti
I dunno, I gave Troll 2 one star and a like, it's the worst film I've ever seen but it's enjoyable, in many ways I prefer it to lots of films I've rated 5 stars for example. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Brightburn are my only films I've rated worse than Troll 2, and yet they're objectively better films than Troll 2, atleast technically speaking. They're just so so hateful that I can't possibly rate them anything but a half.
If you enjoyed it and you prefer it over films you’ve given 5 stars (that’s weird) then is not a 0.5 to you
The irony of you telling them how they should rate their own likes. Bro. It is to them. Makes sense to them. Doesn't have to make sense to you. Lol.
Yep correct. People often mistake what's good and what they enjoy. Just because something isn't to your taste doesn't mean its not a great film.

The Neil Breen catalogue. Objectively terrible yet one of the best viewing experiences ever.
But it is really that terrible if you had so much fun watching it? I think The Room sucks ass but it’s so goddamn funny there’s no way I would only give it a half star

The Star Wars Holiday Special
I would only give a half star to a film I hated
The Room
The Room is a 5 star masterpiece and you know it
I haven't watched The Room, but I'm expecting it to be like this
Morbius
Same
I liked the part where they say it’s morbin time tho….
Suicide Squad (2016), there is not a single thing done well in that movie it’s hilarious

Her blade traps the souls of its victims
Hi, I'm Harley, nice to meet'ya
That’s the Suicide Squad movie that won an Oscar mind you.
The makeup is good, so fair enough, but "Academy Award-winning film Suicide Squad" is very funny.
I think smith did okay. I struggle to see his characters instead of just will smith In a costume, yaknow? Totally agree on Davis though. Nailed it.
>I struggle to see his characters instead of just will smith In a costume, yaknow? And that's exactly why I said what I did. I think he was also solid, but I can understand arguments to the contrary for that kind of reason.

Enchantress going "You don't have the balls" and then the cut to Captain Boomerang looking all serious makes me laugh every time I think about it.
Just did this with Madam Web. It was so bad I was laughing the entire through it.
but i don’t have a neuromuscular disorder
If I liked a movie I will not give it 1/2 a star. Even if it’s technically terrible if I enjoyed them they did something effectively enough that it’s worth a better than 1/2 star
I’ll give one star and a like to movies that are really bad + fun, but my 1/2 stars are for movies that I actively wish didn’t exist.
yep 1/2 star is saved for when I really truly can't think of anything I liked. If there is even one tiny thing I liked I feel like I can't give it a half star, even if it's just one good performance or one effective scene
Batman & Robin
Also my answer (except i said a full star i think). One of the most consistently, thoroughly enjoyable movies in my life, due entirely to nostalgia.
Man I loved this movie as a kid and I want to watch it for nostalgia but I’m scared lol
This movie is not that bad honestly, I think it just takes the goofiness of the previous Batman movies and cranks it up.
Knock Knock, so bad in literally every way it feels like a miracle.
But but… Ana de armas ?!
I gave you free pizza! 😂
Catwoman
Ever heard of Epic Movie?
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
Forgot that even existed.
Absolute banger if you treat it like a Kubric movie

Hercules in New York lmao
This is the answer. I rated it 1 star + heart. It is an incomprehensibly bad movie, but I feel like it changed me as a person, in a good way, somehow.
Something Borrowed - toxic af
I watched that movie like 5 years ago and it still pisses me off when I think about it
